Type III secretion systems (T3SS) are a common feature of Gram-negative bacteria, allowing them to inject anti-host effectors into the interior of infected eukaryotic cells. By this mechanism, these virulence factors help the bacteria to modulate eukaryotic cell function in its favor and subvert host innate immunity. The cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells contains several membrane-delimited compartments of specific molecular compositions and functions. Kotzo shel yod by Y. L. Gordon (1832–1892) – one of the prominent intellectuals of the Jewish Enlightenment period – is a well-known Hebrew poem. My research has focused on developing an understanding of processes operating in and around the Xp/Yp telomere, combined with detailed analysis of the unusual properties seen immediately adjacent to it. To this end, 7 kb of telomere adjacent-sequence was analysed, revealing a SNP density, pi, of 1.73 x 10-3 across the first 3 kb, 2-fold above average genome level. Furthermore, the sequence analysis revealed a 1.9 kb tandem duplication in 86% of chromosomes. Malaria ist die Erkrankung, die durch Infektion eines Säugetiers mit dem eukaryotischen Parasiten Plasmodium entsteht. Die Symptome dieser Erkrankungen reichen von Fieber und Gelenkschmerzen bis zu schweren Organschäden in Hirn, Lunge, Niere und Leber bei einem geringen Teil der Erkrankten. Diese klinischen Symptome treten nur auf, während der Parasit sich asexuell in roten Blutzellen vermehrt. Praziquantel ist das Mittel der Wahl bei der Behandlung der Bilharziose. Für die Wirksamkeit des Medikaments spielt die Immunantwort des Wirts eine wichtige Rolle. Mikronährstoffe sind wichtig für die Funktion des Immunsystems. In Endemiegebieten der Bilharziose findet sich meist ein Mikronährstoffmangel. In dieser Studie wurde untersucht, ob ein Ausgleich des Mikronährstoffmangels das Behandlungsergebnis optimieren kann und Reinfektionen vermindert werden können. T3SSs can secrete protein cargo outside the bacterial cell and also target many of them into the eukaryotic cell interior. Bei 85 Patienten (61 % Männer, 39 % Frauen, Altersmedian: 49 Jahre) nach Leber- (38), Herz- (34) und Lungentransplantation (13) wurde die orale Besiedlung mit Candida-Spezies und deren Biotypen sowie klinische Manifestationen einer Candidiasis bestimmt. Eine orale Candidiasis wurde bei 21/85 Patienten (24,7 %) diagnostiziert (pseudomembranöse Form: 15,3 %; erythematöse Form: 9,4 %; Cheilitis angularis: 3,5 %). Bei 63/85 Patienten (74,1%) wurden Candida spp. nachgewiesen. Von allen gefundenen Candida-Isolaten war C. albicans die am häufigsten isolierte Spezies (73 %), gefolgt von C. glabrata,

Speichelglykane können einerseits spezifisch an bakterielle Lektine binden und damit deren Adhäsion an orale Oberflächen vermitteln, andererseits eine Antiadhäsion bedingen. Sie stellen ein Schutzsystem für orale Oberflächen dar. Bei vorhandener Karies bzw. Parodontitis ist die Konzentration bestimmter Glykokonjugate verändert.
