Abstract:

Yan yu is a traditional fermented fish product produced by the Dong people of Guizhou Province in southwestern China. However, despite its widespread regional consumption, little is known about the chemical characteristics and bacterial community changes involved during yan yu fermentation. Therefore, the present work assessed the changes in both the chemical and microbiota composition of yan yu during its fermentation. Glucose levels gradually decreased after an initial increase at the beginning of fermentation, whereas increase in lactic acid levels continued after 10 d of fermentation. A rapid increase in free amino acid levels was observed at the beginning, but either remained constant or slowly decreased later in the fermentation. In contrast, biogenic amine (BA), TVB-N, and TBARS levels remained low throughout the fermentation. Bacterial community analyses revealed that Lactiplantibacillus and Tetragenococcus dominated the bacterial community. Moreover, O2PLS-based correlation analysis indicated that these two genera significantly affected the chemical composition of yan yu. Furthermore, lactic acid and free amino acid contents (i.e., two major quality parameters of fermented products) were highly correlated with the occurrence of Lactiplantibacillus and Tetragenococcus. These results are expected to establish a basis for the quality improvement of traditional fermentation of yan yu.

Abstract:

This essay examines what Yu Yan’s Zhouyi cantong qi fahui says about the suspension of breathing and pulse, as well as the extraordinary inner sensations and visions that accompany it. Yu Yan maintains that these things come about by simply bringing body and mind to the depths of stillness; they are not instigated through deliberate procedures such as holding of breath, visualization, incantation, gulping air, swallowing saliva, etc. Through sheer inner calm and single-minded concentration, breathing and pulse are suspended while an inner qi 氣 is generated that surges and circulates the body, bringing forth ravishing sensations and strange visions. Yu Yan explains why the inner qi and the visions come to be generated, and why one should and can disregard the visions. Yu Yan’s descriptions and explanations regarding inner calm and its wondrous effects help shed light on the Neidan (inner alchemy) methods of the major traditions of his time (especially Nanzong and Quanzhen), revealing details that tended to be obscured in abstruse metaphor or reserved for oral transmission.

Abstract:

In the article, the author justifies the necessity to work out the principles of the approach, which would underline the principles of the commented translation of the Lun Yu (The Analects) from Chinese into Russian. The prospective authors of this translations must take into consideration both the existent translations as well as the existing comments This approach would enable to select the relevant parts from the Lun Yu, which are difficult for understanding due to The Analects which are difficult to understand due to the use of polysemantic expressions and vocabulary. The article comprises a brief textual review of the earlier versions of Lun Yu and offers a new commented translation of the two well-known fragments of the text. They are fragment 6.22 (on self-sufficiency, guided by a sense of duty) and fragment 7.17 (“on adding years”). The author suggests a new understanding of the well-known expressions, such as yan zhi 遠之 (6.22) as “Keeping distance [from ghosts and spirits]”, and xue yi 學易 (7.17) as “Study the [book of] Changes”. Likely, in the first case, it suggests “not to depend depending on the ghosts and spirits because everyone should rely primarily on himself. In the second case, it implies the act of teaching as such. The author’s results are based upon the commentaries, viz. Lun yu ji jie yi shu and Lun yu ji zhu. The yan zhi 遠之 was interpreted as “do not disturb”. And the second one is based on the found in 1973 the earliest known commentary for Lun Yu, where “Changes” yi 易 is only a homophonic auxiliary expression with the attached word yi 亦. These examples show that even the well-known and thoroughly researched text can receive new interpretation by putting it into a new boarder textual context

A partir de la década de 1980, el autor de Cien años de soledad se convirtió en el gran ídolo y fuente de “angustia de las influencias” (en términos de Harold Bloom) para toda una generación de escritores chinos: Jia Pingwa, Yu Hua, Su Tong, Yan Lianke, Ma Yuan y Mo Yan, entre otros. En este artículo se propone una lectura paralela de Gabriel García Márquez y Mo Yan, el premio nobel chino, con el propósito de demostrar que el realismo mágico latinoamericano y su aventura en China ha formado parte de la historia de la literatura contemporánea del país asiático: a los escritores chinos no solo les avivó su memoria y les hizo adoptar otra actitud hacia su pasado; también les mostró el camino para escribir un nuevo tipo de novela (noveau roman).

Abstract:

Blood commodification in selected works of Chinese contemporary literature based on Chronicle of a Blood Merchant by Yu Hua and Dream of Ding Village by Yan Lianke Narratives that touch upon the topic of physical disease have had a long-standing presence in Chinese literature. In many examples, such narratives serve to present certain abnormal conditions in society. The AIDS epidemic, which erupted in rural China in the 1990s – an event both recorded and officially acknowledged – is an example of such a horrific real-life event depicted in literary works. Blood-selling, which is known to be the direct cause of the tragedy, also became the starting point for two Chinese novels, both translated into major languages: Chronicle of a Blood Merchant by Yu Hua and Dream of Ding Village by Yan Lianke. Even though both novels present clear links to the AIDS epidemic, their content and form elicited contrasting reactions in China. This article presents metaphorical interpretations of how blood-selling is depicted in the novels. The comparison of these two helps to better understand the near opposite reception of the works. Furthermore, the proposed notion of commodification reveals the impermanence of the traditional mindset once a chance to improve the economic situation appears.

Abstract:

The article gives a overview of translations of I.A. Krylov’s fables in China. The first of them appeared more than 120 years ago, but the real acquaintance of Chinese readers with his work took place in the 1950s because of the translations of Meng Hai and Wu Yan. From the late 1970s to the present, the number of translations and editions of Krylov’s fables has been constantly increasing. Now in China there are more than 300 separate editions of his selected fables and 33 complete collections. At various times, at least 64 translators worked on translations of Krylov’s fables into Chinese, and 15 of them translated all nine books of the collection of his fables (these are Wu Yan, He Shiying, Feng Jia, Gu Yu, Xin Weiai, Han Guiliang, He Maozheng, Pei Jiaqin, Qu Hong, Yue Yan, Shi Guoxiong, Ding Lu, Zhu Xiansheng, Qiu Jingjuan and Yang Jianfeng). Some translations are made in prose, but some in poetry. The article summarizes the history of translations of Krylov’s fables in China and provides information about the most important translations and translators.

In 1967, during a mutiny known as the Wuhan Incident, Zhou Enlai flexed his political muscles and pacified the insurgent commanders. Mao felt threatened. Yuan-tsung’s friend Courtier Yu, her direct link to Zhou, warned her that she had been caught in the crossfire of a huge power struggle between Zhou and Mao. Zhou wanted to reach an understanding with the West that would lead to the lifting of its trade sanctions against China. Mao, however, wanted to resuscitate the Great Leap Forward. Yuan-tsung’s best bet was Zhou. If Zhou prevailed, he would use Jack’s knowledge of English and Western culture to explain his open-door policy to the West. In return Jack and Yuan-tsung would get their exit visas. Courtier Yu arranged a meeting at a place near Badaling where Yuan-tsung could take her plea directly to Zhou.

Yuan-tsung reunited with two friends from her Chongqing days, Yu Dayin and her husband, Zeng Zhaolun, who took her to a meeting of the Political Consultative Conference, where she witnessed Mao’s withering attack on Liang Shumin, a Confucian scholar, who criticized Mao’s agricultural policy. This was followed by Mao’s purge of Hu Feng, a maverick literary critic, who had criticized Mao’s dictates on culture and had written a manifesto challenging them. The two incidents led Yuan-tsung to come to some painful political realizations—among them that writing under Mao’s reign was a life-and-death matter.

The Anti-Rightist Campaign continued, claiming more than half a million victims, and it was a close call for Yuan-tsung. She witnessed the fall of her immediate boss, Director Wang, at his heartbreaking last meeting with his little daughter, Oriole. She also witnessed the fall of Zeng Zhaolun and the destruction of the Democratic League, the influential “third-way” party of which Zeng was a founding member. Zeng’s wife Yu Dayin, Yuan-tsung’s best friend, was a collateral victim. It broke both her heart and her spirit to see her husband being taken away. The tragedies happening around Yuan-tsung made her think she would not be spared, but at this juncture she reunited with her ex-lover, Jack, who came back from a trip on the Silk Road.

Abstract:

This study attempts to clarify the tense systems in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea; particularly, the past tense and habitual past forms in the sample three languages in the area: Amele, Waskia, and Kobon. This study thus investigates past tense and habitual features, and discusses how the people in the area interpret past events. The study then discusses how these people map their temporal frames in their grammars (“anthropology of time”, Gell 1996). To aid analysis, I collected data through observing descriptive grammars and fieldwork, finding that Amele exhibits three types of past tense and habitual tense forms, as in (1). Kobon has two distinct simple and remote past tenses, as in (2). Kobon has habitual aspect with the help of the verb “to be.” Waskia, in contrast, has a distinction between realis and irrealis meanings, and the realis forms can indicate past and habitual meanings (two habitual forms: one is include in realis, another is with the help of the verb “stay”), as shown in (3). The observed habitual usages are different to each other. Nevertheless, the three languages have a grammatical viewpoint of habitual past mapping.

The joint NASA-Roscosmos Flame Design (Adamant) spaceflight experiment [1, 2] is one of six International Space Station (ISS) investigations which are currently part of the Advanced Combustion via Microgravity Experiments (ACME) project. Abstract:

The objective of the current work is to present a new correlation for predicting heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) for flow boiling in horizontal microfin tubes. Correlations to predict HTCs have been proposed by numerous authors such as Yu et al., Thome et al., Cavallini et al., Yun et al., Chamra and Mago, Wu et al., and other researchers. The correlations proposed are semi-empirical due to the difficulties associated with modeling the physics of flow boiling in microfin tubes. The above correlations are based on smooth tube flow boiling correlations which are modified to capture the effect of the inner grooves in the microfin tubes on the boiling process. In a previous work, it has been demonstrated that no single correlation can reasonably predict the flow boiling HTCs over a wide range of operating conditions and tube geometric parameters (Merchant and Mehendale). A new model has been proposed and validated using an experimental database of 1576 points from published literature. For the full dataset, the new correlation has X30% of 67.3%, compared to Cavallini et al. and Wu et al. with X30% of 44.2% and 40.6% respectively. The performance of the new model for tube diameters less than and greater than 5 mm has also been discussed for halogenated refrigerants and CO2.

Abstract:

The high flow boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) and comparatively low pressure drop of microfin tubes make them suited to meet the ever-increasing energy efficiencies and burgeoning raw material costs of HVAC & R systems. Since the late 1980s, many empirical or semi-empirical correlations have been proposed to predict the in-tube boiling HTC for microfin tubes. A vast number of experimental studies have also been published for microfin tubes under different operating conditions with different refrigerants. However, due to the complex behavior of two-phase flows, it has been observed that no single correlation can predict the flow boiling HTC reasonably for the entire spectrum of geometric and operating parameters. The objective of the current study is to develop and provide researchers and practicing engineers with a predictive tool that will help them select the most accurate flow boiling HTC correlation for any practical HVAC & R application. Six popular and widely used correlations have been selected for investigation, which include Yu et al. [1], Thome et al. (as cited in [2]), Cavallini et al. [3], Yun et al. [4], and Chamra and Mago [5] and Wu et al. [6]. Each correlation has been carefully and critically assessed to discover its strengths, weaknesses and applicability to practical situations. In general, for tubes with root diameters greater than 5 mm, Thome et al. [2] and Cavallini et al. [3] predict the flow boiling HTC very well for CO2 and halogenated refrigerants respectively. For tubes with root diameters less than 5 mm, Wu et al. [6] is recommended. However, these recommendations can and do change with an alteration in flow or geometric parameters. Hence a tool is needed to measure the applicability of these correlations. The extensive experimental database collected for this research includes 1636 data points taken from 22 published articles. This wide-ranging database contains experimental points that incorporate all of the geometric and operating conditions that are used in the air-conditioning industry today. Traditionally, experimentation has been the principal means of ascertaining the HTC of microfin tubes. However, such testing is very costly and time consuming. The innovative numerical methodology developed in this work provides the practitioner with a tool to quantify the performance of a correlation for a specific application. This approach has been tested by the authors for several experimental points that span the entire range of real-world geometric and operating parameters. The use of this novel numerical procedure will save the HVAC & R industry significant experimental time and cost.
