Abstract:
Recent aggressions and geopolitical insecurities in the Baltic region have made it necessary for the Swedish armed forces to change their focus from an international defense policy to a territorial defense strategy. This change focuses mainly on strengthening the defensive capabilities of the Swedish armed Forces by reshaping the brigade structures with a focus on combined arms warfare in conjunction to maneuver warfare. Current doctrine and manuals show a lack in combined arms concerning its contribution to tactical success as well as its origin. As such a question whether tactical success can be explained with combined arms has been raised. This thesis aims to examine if Robert R Leonhard’s theory on combined arms can explain success at a tactical level during Operation Desert Storm and the Yom Kippur war and the analysis focuses on Robert Leonhards three principles of combined arms. The result of the study shows that the theory can partly explain success at a tactical level in both cases. But further studies must be conducted on the subject in order to increase the theories explanatory power.

Abstract:
A trend in modern warfare is to conduct war both conventionally and unconventionally. This modern era sets high demands on conventional forces to face the contemporary threat. Most of the modern conventional forces conduct war through maneuver warfare and uses the practice of combined arms to organize and fight, but is the method of combined arms still a valid method? This study examines Robert Leonhard’s theory of combined arms in the Yom Kippur war 1973 and during the American Thunder Runs in Baghdad 2003. The research question that this study is trying to answer is how the combined arms theory can explain the tactical success in the two cases. Previous studies about the theory explains how it could be understood, not how it is used. The theory encompasses three principles which is applied to the two cases to allow a structured analysis. The results show that both the Israelis and the Americans use the combined arms theory to achieve tactical success. What the analysis also shows is that the theory is not the only element that achieved success, but also technical advantage, moral and experience made an impact on the outcome of the cases.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how the use of combined arms according to Robert Leonhards theory can explain the military success on the tactical level of war in two historical cases. Previous studies focus mainly on how combined arms shall be understood and how it shall be used and not how combined arms has contributed to military success. This thesis uses a theory testing case study to examine how combined arms contributed to the military success of the Israeli forces in the Yom Kippur-war and to that of American forces in  Operation Desert Storm.   The analysis is based on Robert Leonhards three principles of combined arms. The result of the analysis shows that both the Israeli forces and the American forces used the different principles of combined arms. The analysis also showed that the use of combined arms created military success at the tactical level of the different wars, but combined arms cannot by itself explain the military success as the technical advantages, moral and educational level also had a significant impact on the outcome.

Ogden, Melinda Anne. "Aktis Island houses and households : an ethno-archaeological study of the Ka:'yu:'k't'h home-base." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/52679.

Full text
Abstract:
This community-based project combined ethnography, history and archaeology to chronicle the life history of the houses and households at Aktis village, the historical home-base of the Ka:'yu:'k't'h (Kyuquot) confederacy on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island. Though there are connections between the material house and the social household, they are not synonymous. Despite changes in architecture at Aktis village, there is continuity in social form. A diachronic perspective extending from the deep past to the present-day was used to examine this transformation. Archaeological mapping and percussion-coring were used to explore the distant past of the site. This revealed deep house depressions, suggesting that the locations of house sites at Aktis village were preserved through time. Core samples indicated shell midden deposits as deep as 3.5 metres, and almost uninterrupted occupation since 1686±126 BP (calibrated radiocarbon years before present), with a possible break between 1627±118 BP and 1384±107 BP. Interviews and historical documents suggest that the big houses and the lineage properties on which they stood acted as powerful symbols for extended family households. Though nuclear families moved out of the big houses, they continued to live in family groups, building smaller homes on their lineage properties. The centrepiece of the lineage properties were the externally-ornate dance houses, which, though vacant, represented family prestige and solidarity. The dance houses were torn down around 1930. However, lineage properties (and the family ties they represented) were maintained. The move away from Aktis village in the 1970s eliminated the community’s daily encounter with the lineage properties, a tangible symbol of household groups. Even so, the traditional ideology of kinship that bound together members of a house persists: Ka:'yu:'k't'h extended families continue to exhibit considerable social solidarity at key moments in the lives of their members.

Abstract:
This thesis is aimed at analyzing dyslexic students’ features of written texts in Hong Kong using systemic functional linguistics. Text analytic method was adopted in comparing the texts written by dyslexic students with those written by normal students based on the systems of transitivity, theme, mood and modality. The study has further developed the concept of word density within the framework of systemic functional linguistics, putting forward the proposition of using “functional word density”, i.e. transitivity density, theme density and mood density, to analyze the language features of students with dyslexia, in the hope of shedding some light on teaching writing skills to these students. Research findings indicate that dyslexic students generally display strong capabilities in presenting specific concepts while their emotional concepts, however, are relatively weak. These students’ density of lexicon regarding material, behavioral and existential processes is higher than that of normal students but their word density of psychological and relationship processes is comparatively lower. When writing descriptive essays, narrative essays and argumentative essays, dyslexic students’ lexical density of psychological process indicates less variation than normal students. This shows that students with dyslexia are generally less flexible in expressing emotions and always fail to adapt to different genres by adjusting remarkably their use of psychological words. As a matter of fact, dyslexic students tend to be insufficient in expressing emotions. When it comes to essay writing, this “low-level of emotionality” reduces their lexical density of psychological words which will in turn undermines students’ performance in descriptive essays. Nevertheless, when doing narrative or commentary writing, these students’ proven word density is somewhat higher than that of normal students. The findings may pave the way for further research on alternative approaches in teaching writing skills to the students. It is also noteworthy that dyslexic students display similar tendency to normal students in terms of theme, mood and modality density. However, these students are good at using conjunctions while weak in connectives and modal adjunct. From the perspective of education, remedial and alternative approaches may be considered for the sake of dyslexic students. It is proposed that these students, in order to compensate for their lack of emotional lexicon, may express feelings by narrating daily occurrences and teachers may support by providing them with lexicon of relevant genres to strengthen their data bank on emotional lexicon.

Yun-song Yang’s theory, also known as "The Mountain Peak Method" or "The Jiangxi Method”, is used to evaluate the Feng-shui of an area based on its mountain topography. The theory implements four tools to determine the ideal location: dragon's finding, sand's observation, river direction and geomancy. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the major works of Yun-song Yang, “HAN-LOONG JING”, “YI-LOONG JING”, “ZANG FA DAO ZHANG”. These three Kan-Yu will then be analyzed and applied to the mountain peak principle to attempt to solve the basic issues of the theory. “HAN-LOONG JING” is a method by which mountain topography can be evaluated. The method requires the identification of the dragon vein and the open direction of the river. By tracking from the Dragon’s Head, looking at the front and back sides of the mountain and observing the shape of the hole, the Dragon’s Nest can be found. The coffin can then be burrowed vertically into the underground hole. In other words, “HAN LOONG JING”, “YI-LOONG JING” and “ZANG FA DAO ZHANG” ,are a complete process to find a vein in which to put a coffin. This thesis is based on the "Literature analysis" from historiography. This paper probes into the meaning of the three original classics and gives meaning to the four chapters. Under the thinking of these four chapters, it restates and explains the knowledge of Kan-Yu. The main idea of “ZANG FA DAO ZHANG” is collecting Yin and Yang. In such consideration, we shall learn from the Chinese philosophy of Yi Jing and the theory of Qi for further discussion. In such re-statement of “HAN LOONG JING”, “YI-LOONG JING”, “ZANG FA DAO ZHANG”, it is concluded that: As noted in “HAN LOONG JING”, stars above the mountain outline the silhouette. Two words lead to the range: Dragon and God. Dragon is energy. God is spirit. According to this theory, it created and presented the nine stars of Mountain dragons on the ground. Mt. Kunlun is the original mine for nice star of mountain dragon, all the way from the plateau of Northwest China, and spread over the east like open branches of scattered leaves. The mountain dragon was divided into nine stars based on the momentum of each vein or canyon and gorge or river's open-way. Each star possessed a unique momentum and essence, which brought further change to the shape. Some of the mountain's shape is said to be filled with strong momentum but after encounters with the canyon or the open-exit of the river, its strong momentum weakened and split into smaller veins. For instance, the Wicked Star Lian Zhen turned into the Gloomy Star Ju Men and the branches combined into a true hole. Some mountain shapes have weaker momentums, such as Ruinous Star Po Jun and Abundance Star Lu Cun. These constellations were combined to make a new vein. Due to peeling and weakening momentum, mountains failing to build its true holes will require other starts to protect and reinforce (such as Zuo Fu and You Bi assists Intelligence Star Wen Qu). Thus, whether or not the nine-star mountain shape can build the true hole, it is not observed and judged by its outlook but instead by its stripping conversion, or with other stars’ blending dragons. Let the stars from sky see the Dragon's vein is the Qi of the mountains. This is the spirit of the mountains referred to in the previous theoretical concept. " The stars in the sky are shining down on the mountains, the God and Dragon find the Mountain range. God is the Spirit, the Dragon is Energy.” “YI-LOONG JING” contains a total of three parts: The first part, the middle part and the final part. The subject is studied for the identification of holes from the dragon's vein and mentioned the need to gather all the conditions of mountain-facing, river-facing and mountain-adjacent hole. However, its main theoretical basis is to find a place to gather Qi and the aforementioned conditions can collect all the Qi surrounded without leakage. Therefore, the turning point, swing point and a river clip from the Dragon vein would be the major location to gather Qi. The previously mentioned article teaches us how to find dragons at Guanxia and the two river's clips which track a dragon vein with many twists and turns. These are the big patterns of dragon vein for gathering Qi in conjunction with mountain-facing, river-facing and mountain-adjacent hole. Being wide and not dangerous, it is an all-around ideal place to gather Qi. The middle part is only a continuation of the first, but puts forward a more detailed method of differentiation. For instance, looking for the back of the mountain vein and entangled the river and mountain, searching the dragon’s head and tracking its back, and identifying male and female to evaluate the landscape. This is important as it all emphasize on finding the main vein in such complicated mountain veins. The next article, although we mention the true hole, the false hole and the strange hole, we still give examples of two parts, one is the big hole and the other is the big pattern. The dragon’s twists and turns around the looping point can knot the big wall bureau as seen in the capital Changan. The other part is the small pattern which pays attention to the leakage of Qi. Therefore it is said that the nipple hole is afraid of the wind blowing. If wind blows into it, people will be extinct. If the position of the hole is not right, it is like a malfunction of an acupuncture machine. Locating the position and settling down in the hole serves to preserve the right cavity of Qi, and is the same concept as the first part and the middle part which is to find a place for collecting Qi. From this theory we learn that YI-LOONG JING is a source of knowledge on collecting Qi. In order to invoke the concept of Qi in ZANG SHU, it probes into the theory of ZANG FA DAO ZHANG and is divided into two parts for studying. The first part involves finding and settling down in a hole with Qi which has alternation on both yin and yang present. The second part is the settling of the coffin. It must be taken from one of the four emblematic symbols “Si-Xiang” (Mai, Xi, Ku, Tu) and use a method from its four selections to have Qi from all sides. When all has come to the end, it is necessary to go through six stages to obtain a suitable burial place based on the previous concepts. This confirms that the knowledge system of ZANG FA DAO ZHANG is constructed under the alternation and Qi of Yin and Yang. From the above knowledge theory, “HAN-LOONG JING”, stars above the mountain outline the silhouette. Two words lead to the range: Dragon and God. Dragon is energy. God is spirit. The range of nine mountains require Qi to peel. This is the spirit of the mountain's vein. “YI-LOONG JING” locates the hole from the range to gather Qi. “ZANG FA DAO ZHANG” finds and settles the hole with Qi, which has alternation on both yin and yang present for the coffin. Therefore, the dragon vein runs with Qi and collects it for having Yin and Yang. Through the scope of Qi, this is the theoretical basis of the knowledge and study by Yun-song Yang. This thesis aims to clearly express the theory of Yun-song Yang and the original three classics. It also clarifies the knowledge of the theory of justice by exploring the content of righteousness and begin a discussion of other sectarian theories.

Knowledge and ideas were often under severe restraint in Asia-Pacific area during Cold War. Them were forced to circulate in some obscure underground ways. Since 1980s, two bookstores, Tosan and Gerakbudaya, separately developed in Taiwan and Malaysia but similarly break through the restrains by publishing and book selling. They provided many books of critical thinking and plural values to intellectuals, connected different groups, became the “armories of ideas” in their society. In order to understand their practice in different cultures, histories, ideas and actions, this article describes the making of two short documentaries and an exhibition of these two bookstores through field research, interviews and filmmaking.

This paper records the creation of the graduate school and the work is divided into two ranges:(1)Moving the landscape, through persistence of vision and dynamic relationship to change the landscape structure(2)Becoming the shape of the form, this subject at the research stage has continued to progress, while making use of creation to show the will and during the process of continuous reflection of the author's life experience and through random picking of materials such as wood, gypsum plate, rubble stone etc... and these items have their own inevitable factors and cannot be chosen selectively as unique modeling ingredients. So as to enable the author to have more creative experience, trying to deconstruct and then reconstruct the material into a three-dimensional shape. Finally, after re-building it into a three-dimensional tangible state, attempt to explore the possibility of exchange between the material structure and space. " Shape as Formality ", in this series of works, these materials will retain their damaged states, with unstable factors and in an unfinished state, which suggest a possible openness of the works and these obvious shapes give the viewers a stimulating vision. The painting works will be placed on the ground or presented independently at the exhibition, allowing the viewers to change the inertia of the paintings. This research topic is divided into five chapters for discussion: Chapter One starts with the introduction; Chapter Two discusses the creation of the academic foundation and takes Rosenberg and other artists' depicting styles as illustration examples to discuss the differences and extension of the creative methods; Chapter Three explores my own creative context; Chapter Four is about the appreciation of the introduction of the work; Chapter Five is about the conclusion, reviews and future prospects of the creation and discussion. Keywords: Form, organic shapes, sketch.

What is “curatorial”? Is this term that frequently appears in books on curatorial studies mean the same as “curatorial”? The trendiness of using the term “curatorial” is the motivation behind this study, which attempts to explore the original meaning and context of the concept. Throughout the development of art, artworks have broken free from canvases, exhibition booths, and physical frameworks. From handheld pens, cameras, to integrating different subjects of knowledge, various methods of representation continue to expand, while displays have transformed from their original still modes to being more dynamic, changing from being in one place at one time to more extended periods and in multiple locations. In addition, as curatorial methods become increasingly comprehensive, more works have the possibility of being included in exhibitions. If current cognitions can no longer sufficiently satisfy the appetite of professional art audiences, only avant-garde works and displays that are more experimental, challenging, innovative, and have alternative qualities, are capable of attracting attention, is there a method that exists amid the gray area that can explain works such as these? Inspections of “curatorial” should certainly focus on exhibitions. However, this study is more interested in a more strategic, creative way of inspecting this “alternative creative method,” which led to the idea of “adopting curatorial as a creative method for artists.” Should this proposition be established, what does it entail?

Benjamin Britten’s idea of creating an opera for children in “The Little Sweep” stemmed from his belief in the potential of children. The Little Sweep is a masterpiece of artistry, singing, and education. This opera is a wonderfully appropriate vehicle for both entertaining and educating young people in communities and schools. The purpose of this study is to explore “The Little Sweep” through an inquiry of its context and Britten’s compositional techniques. The first chapter is an introduction. The second chapter is a brief survey of Britten’s life, including a list of his works for children and, the examination of these works to address Britten’s purpose of musical education. The third chapter surveys the process of creating “The Little Sweep” and theatrical analyses. The fourth chapter presents four types of songs that Britten utilized in children chorales, audience participating songs, arias and, duets in the opera. Throughout all these four types of songs, we examine Britten’s consistent and unique techniques in composition. The fifth chapter is the conclusion of previous discussions, and a performance example of “The Little Sweep” by the researcher, which is brought to confirm the artistry and educational goal of the work once again. ***********************************************************Renaissance Vecchie letrose.....................A. The Conversation Between The Mountains and The Town of Jinguashi -The Interpretation of The Art Work created by YU, Kai-Ming in June 2011 Abstract The painting art tends to be diversified as times change. After the Chinese traditional painting art was spread to Taiwan, the typical local style of the Taiwanese ink painting was resulted from the difference of customs, species and geography. When I was a student, I used to travel around to experience the beauty of the nature as well as to investigate the change of things and objects, especially for the clouds, mountains, water and stones. I feel more interested in the observation of them. From the observation, I learnt how to respect the nature and realize the spiritual of the ink painting starts from the thought of aesthetics and mix with the art behaviors that originated from elements of the nature. In love with the beauty of the Jinguashi landscape, I tried to explore many historical features and the landscape of the Jinguashi, such as the mountains range into dramatic valleys and peaks, the scenes of old houses and geography, the streets of the vertical and horizontal style, the strength of waterfalls, and the scenes of desolate mining area. By exploring the landscape, it would be much helpful to capture the real spiritual of ink paintings. After reflection by the inner spirit of modern ink painting, ink painting is not only the drawing of the real scene but also the interpretation of the inner spiritual by the mixture of western and oriental painting techniques and the evolution of drawing. It leads to the more space of creative arts and oriental-oriented ink painting. The context will be the reflection of theory and creative arts. By further research of the ink painting, the importance of real scenes and scenarios from the Jinquashi artworks express the beauty of the nature and the spiritual scenarios of the paintings, and the ink painting itself still has plenty rooms for exploration of future creative goal. keywords ink paiting artworks scenes, landscape scenes and scenarios chinkuashih
