Culture is commonly viewed as the most significant factor that distinguishes one ethic group from another. Writing is primarily defined as the carrier of culture. Religion is generally conceded to be the important way to convey culture, while culture is primly manifested by religion. All that is attributed to the Oracle Bone Inscriptions unearthed. Hence, Oracle Bone Inscriptions is associated with the culture study of Shang Dynasty. Central to the culture of Shang Dynasty is the religion culture in the sense that Oracle Bone Inscriptions articulates a great deal of records related to religion. Oracle Bone Inscriptions, accordingly, manages to provide abundant and genuine documents and evidences for the purpose of studying the culture of Shang Dynasty. The research aims to focus on the Oracle Bone Inscriptions as a main object of analysis, with the combination of the study of Oracle Bone, history of Shang Dynasty together with anthropology, which intends to explore the characteristics of China’s religion and develop a new definition. The Shang Dynasty is regarded as a period of strengthening religious belief and rituals. The degree of China’s religion ceremony represents itself in a statement of full popularity and development in Shang Dynasty which is implicated by the Oracle Bone Inscriptions, and the worship ceremony is embodied in China’s religion. Through the research, it is concluded that the core belief of China’s religion mainly revolves around ancestor worship and its consciousness; particular religious sites, such as ancestor temples; worship ancestor of genetic connection as well as ancestor of social groups; and belief of ethics and morality. Religion is closely concerned in society construction and nation building; moreover, it exerts a significant influence on Chinese cultures in many aspects.

Wang, Jihui. Paris 3, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA030100.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines some thoughts on translation theory in China at the beginning of the 20th century, when Chinese translators constructed different kinds of translation methods that they tried to justify at a theoretical level on the basis of both their practice and conventional ideas. Our research is divided into three parts. The first part reassesses the three criteria put forward by Yan Fu. The second studies three translators representing different schools in that period : Lin Shu, Lu Xun and Fu Lei. It analyzes and compares their practices and viewpoints in social and cultural terms. During the transition from the 19th to 20th century, wen yan ( classical Chinese) and bai hua (popular Chinese) coexisted at first and then the latter began to predominate, a change that has lead to many discussions on translation. That is why in the third part of the thesis the focus is put on the impact of translation on the Chinese language. By this objective review of the extensive interaction between texts and research in the field of translation and on the basis of the interpretive theory of translation, it is hoped that we can partly clarify the succession, confrontation, mutation and the natural trend that many Chinese translation methods and thoughts have experienced

Abstract:
The Taoist tradition of Highest Clarity, or Shangqing, was born in the the fourth century from a series of revelations. It rapidly became an independent school on the Maoshan with its own community and corpus. Its spiritual and scriptural heritage inspired the religious life of many scholars of medieval China. As regards this tradition’s situation in the eighth century, a period during which the imperial patronage reached its peak, there are two positions among historians: for some, Shangqing was an independent school which was also able to influence the powers that be; for the others, it did no longer exist per se because it had been absorbed into the Church of the Heavenly Master which controlled investitures and ritual. This dissertation attempts to demonstrate that although Highest Clarity no longer existed in an independent way at that time, it nevertheless remained a tangible reality, both in politics and spirituality

Lu, Chu Yi. "The Development of Christianity in Contemporary China." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4349.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to study the development of Christianity in contemporary China. It adds to the limited literature that explores how Christianity has developed as the fastest growing religion in China post the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The data derive from semi-structured and focus group interviews with Chinese Christians and field observation notes collected at both official and non-official Christian churches in Beijing. I found an ambivalent attitude toward the development of Christianity across different social levels in China. At the state level, the Chinese government expects Christianity to provide a much-needed stabilizing influence in an increasingly self-centered and materialistic society. At the same time, the government fears that Christianity's increasing power may pose a threat to the Communist regime. Correspondingly, at the community level, Chinese Christians wish to see an increasing Christian influence throughout Chinese society to improve people's quality of life, but many Chinese traditionalists oppose the increased Christian influence that seems to be supplanting traditional Chinese culture. These disagreements do not seem to have seriously impeded the development of Christianity in China today. Applying a pervasive cultural perspective – the lens of Yin-Yang interaction – to the current situation of the Christian churches in China, I find that the Yin traits within Christianity and the Yang traits embedded in the Chinese political ideology are coexisting paradoxical values whose interaction facilitates an acceptance, or at least sanction, of oppositions that have reshaped the social and political landscape of Chinese society and fostered the continuing growth of Christianity in China.

Full text
Abstract:
Cheng Minzheng程敏政(1446-1499), widely regarded as one of the most prolific scholars in Ming dynasty, had accomplished hundreds of volume in history, philosophy and literature. His works had long shined new light on different spheres of academic research during the past centuries. Song Yi Min Lu《宋遺民錄》, a book compiled by Cheng Minzheng in the reign of Emperor Xianzong憲宗(1447-1487, r.1464—1487), has been respected as the pioneer to name a work as “Yi Min Lu” in Chinese History. It has long been regarded as a monograph of “Song Yi Min宋遺民” (loyalists of the Song Dynasty) that provided valuable information for those aimed at re-writing or re-illustrating the history of the Song Dynasty. Actions taken by these “Yi Min” against the invaded Mongolian troops, and even Mongolian rule after the fall of the Dynasty were highly appreciated. This thesis will take a detail research on the life and works of Cheng Minzheng. It will be followed by an in-depth study on the book Song Yi Min Lu. The background and process of its compilation will be examined and the“Yi Min” named in the book will be investigated. The patterns of historical development in the transitional period of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, as well as that of the reigns of the Emperor Yingzong英宗(1421-1464, r. 1435-1449, 1457-1464)and Emperor Jingdi景帝(1428-1457, r. 1449-1457)will all be studied in detail. Readerwillfind thatSong Yi Min Luwas compiled by Cheng Minzheng as a mirror to reflect his views on the unjust execution of Yu Qian于謙(1398-1457),a scholar-official who led the campaign against the invaded Mongolian troops in 1449 and sentenced to death by Emperor Yingzong in 1457. This showed that he actually respected those existing supporters of Emperor Jingdi after the restoration of Emperor Yingzong as another type of “Yi Min”.

陳偉基 and Wai-kei Chan. "Romance of the stone: cultural interpretationof Yan Yuen Shek (Lover's rock)." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2011. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B47584038.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation sheds light on the cultural significance of Yan Yuen Shek, a non man-made feature, and its relationship with the folk worship culture. Under the influence of prevailing legends probably fabricated after war, Yan Yuen Shek is often misunderstood as a contemporary cultural highlight. Actually, its cultural history could be traced back to the early colonial period as possible. Like other temples in the neighborhood, it had passed through different stages of temple development before it is incorporated into the present Lover’s Stone Garden. Based on the above, the author has some observations. First, folk worship could be manifested in various forms under different circumstances. The evolution from primitive, simple forms to extensive, elaborated forms would not be a linear path but with drawbacks at intervals. Conservationists should look beyond temples and pay equal attention to other less apparent objects. Second, the Lover’s Stone Garden is quite successful to upkeep the setting of Yan Yuen Shek as it was in 1970s but the regulations and planning intention behind the garden is not beneficial to sustain the intangible elements of Yan Yuen Shek, setting some possible constraints to its further enhancement.

Liu, Fengxiang. Littoral, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004DUNK0107.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis of doctorate proposes to study the processes of co-operation by developing the diversity of the local practices. While highlighting the insufficiencies even antagonisms of the standardization by the economic one, it develops a glance of long duration on the history of the associationism and solidarism. By doing this, the author describes the social theories and movements which animated reformism and the social economy in Europe since the first half of the XIXème century. It is with passing that it approaches the development co-operation in favour of the country of the South and particularly China. This assessment, it draws the failures from the dominant practices of the development and the economic globalisation. Vis-a-vis with these anomalies whose essential source is the imposition of a single model, synonymous with a domination by the economic one, it mobilizes an interdisciplinary approach while opening its diagnosis with the cultures of the actors and the territories. It is in the theory of the sites that it finds the bases of its demonstration. From the Chinese experiment approached, it tries to associate this step the Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang. What enables him to better consolidate the principles of diversity, tolerance and pluralism of the economic philosophy of the sites. By doing this, in the empirical plan, while underlining the macroeconomic performances of China, it identifies of them the risks and contradictions potentials for better supporting the relevance of the modes of decentralized co-operation ensuring a greater proximity with the men, the inheritances, the cultures, solidarity, the ecosystems. In the support of a concrete socio-economic analysis of the coastal zone and city of Dalianin the North-East of China, this thesis pre-empts the need for a renewal of the practices of the economic development. This prospect finds all its direction in the philosophy of the taoism and the confucianism whose principles rest on balance, the interdependence, the interaction, the reciprocal transformation, the opposition and, finally, the harmony with our world. Thus, this thesis launches the bases of the "economy of the yin and the yang", synonym in imaginary Chinese of a nonviolent economy with the respect to the man and of nature. For this reason, it is registered start against reductionnism and excessive materialism
