AbstractIn 2010, an Indonesian movie titled Merantau won Best Film Award at ACTIONFEST, a festival dedicated to action films from around the world. Directed by the American Gareth Evans, this film presented a storyline based on the travels and conflicts encountered by a Minangkabau youth in his journey away from his home village in West Sumatra. The action scenes in the film used movements from silat, the traditional martial arts of West Sumatra, Indonesia. The leading actor, Iko Uwais, then an Indonesian unknown, became a star and went on to earn lead roles in Raid I and Raid II, both films by the same director, that also used silat movements. The action scenes in Merantau that drew so much attention were the fighting sequences choreographed following the motifs of traditional Minangkabau silat harimau (“tiger-style” fighting) movements. This genre was as yet unknown outside the martial arts scene because most of the choreography of fighting scenes in the film is based on Chinese or Japanese martial arts styles. Breaking away from that convention, the choreographer for the scenes in Merantau was Edwel Yusri Datuk Rajo Gampo Alam, a master and teacher of traditional tiger-style silat (or silek harimau) originating in West Sumatra. In the Minangkabau language, harimau means “tiger.” The word is also used in Bahasa Indonesia.

This chapter introduces the reader to the ballets that George Balanchine created in Russian. It contains a literature review of both English-language primary sources by dancers Alexandra Danilova, Tamara Geva, and Yuri Slonimsky and Russian-language primary sources by Vera Kostrovitskaya and Yuri Slonimsky, as well as other primary and secondary sources. The idea of the possibility of reconstructing lost Balanchine works is addressed and the project, Envisioning Funeral March, is discussed. The steps for reconstructing a lost dance, including traditional archival research, studio research, and finally staging the completed dance in the context of Balanchine’s early choreography is discussed.

Abstract:
This paper explores the evolution of the terms ‘system' and ‘structure' as applied to literature and art by Russian formalists and some of subsequent structuralist theorists from the 1920s to the 1980s. Initially favoured by Petrograd formalists like Yuri Tynianov, the term ‘system' gradually shared space with ‘structure', introduced by Gustav Shpet in 1923 and embraced by Moscow (para)formalist phenomenologists including Grigorii Vinokur. In 1928, Roman Jakobson, collaborating with Tynianov in Prague, adopted both terms as synonyms. However, heralding the foundational concept of the emergent, post-romantic, and post-positivist field he termed ‘structuralism' in 1929, he eschewed ‘system' in his post-1929 works. These shifts paved the way for Yuri Lotman's dialectics of system and structure. According to Lotman, a structure (=text) birthed from a system (=language) metamorphoses into a system in itself, consequently giving rise to new structures (=texts).

Abstract:
In 1829–1830, people expected Pushkin to glorify the Russian victory in the Caucasian War that he had witnessed. The opening octaves of “The Little House in Kolomna” were a paradoxical reaction to the imposed theme. In poetry that glorifies war, the signifier is the poetic word, the signified is an event (a battle, a victory, etc.), and the denotation is the meaning attributed to the event (for example: “The victory of Russian arms gives peace and serenity to the peoples”). Pushkin defiantly swapped the signifier and signified. The denotation became the poetic word, while the signifier became war: military vocabulary was used as a language to describe the workings of the poetic word. The signifier was the assertion of the regal freedom of poetry. In the initial octaves of the poem, the self-creation and self-reflexivity of the poetic form present it as a power capable of inverting the relationship between the word and its object: what everyone sees as the signifier fulfils the auxiliary role of signifying the life of poetic speech. It is no accident that such a major semantic revolution was produced within the framework of a humorous poem.

Abstract:
This paper examines different forms of transgression, or border crossing, in the works of Lyudmila Ulitskaya. The anthropological aspects of transgression which were described and expounded by the twentieth-century French thinker, Georges Bataille, primarily manifest themselves in the actions and feelings of the characters and also in their artistic works. The latter, similarly to the author’s intertextual references, can be interpreted from a semiotic point of view as transgressions between distinct semiotic systems, as “translation” from one “language” into another, as conceptualized by Yuri Lotman in his theory of the semiosphere. With these two mutually complementary ideas in the background, it becomes clear that besides the realist tendencies of her oeuvre, Lyudmila Ulitskaya makes use of the postmodernist perception of the world and the artistic methods that stem from it.

Abstract Many different polynomials that produce primes are now known. They add little to our knowledge of prime numbers; instead, they demonstrate that polynomials can have very strange properties. In his celebrated address to the 1900 International Congress of Mathematicians, David Hilbert posed 23 problems whose solution he felt would be of the highest importance to the advancement of mathematics. Hilbert’s tenth problem is to find out whether there exists a general method-what we would now call an algorithm-for testing whether a Diophantine equation has a solution. In 1970, following earlier work by Martin Davis, Hilary Putnam, and Julia Robinson, the Russian mathematician Yuri Matijasevic proved that no such “decision algorithm” exists. Because the method effectively uses polynomials as a rather cumbersome “programming language” in which to simulate computer algorithms, the polynomials produced are absolutely enormous. James Jones discovered an explicit system of polynomial equations for which no decision algorithm exists: it comprises 18 equations in 33 variables with maximum degree 560.
