Although Lin Yutang had written five books which are in biographical literature form, previous researchers who had done studies or discussions on Chinese contemporary biographical literature or Lin’s work, did not give much focus to them. The purpose for Lin Yutang to write a famous character from Chinese history in English like “The Gay Genius: The Life and Times of Su Tungpo” and “Lady Wu” is to introduce Chinese culture to western readers. This is his speciality when compared to the other Chinese contemporary biographies. Since Lin Yutang had clarified his work as biography, he has no other choice but to follow to the rules set for biographical literatures. ‘Historical Authenticity’ and ‘Literature Art’ are important principles for this genre. My thesis is to examine the way he expresses Su Tungpo and Lady Wu's history, the characterization and the descriptive angle he had set for both. From these three basic aspects, we can determine the standard level he had achieved.

Among the writers in the thirties, Lin, Yutan is internationally famous. He encouraged himself to master the Chinese and the western culture and critic all the articles of the universe. With the knowledge of multi-culture, his style of writing is both humorous and light-hearted, and combining the western style essay earning him the fame of "The master of Humor". His name is inseparable with "Humor" in the history of modern Chinese literature. He made the best of the sense of humor and turned it into the most beautiful flower that put a smile on the face of everyone. Mr. Lin wrote in English for more than 30 years. Through his writing, the westerners understand more about the world of Chinese. His writing is filled with philosophy and wisdom. In the mean time, his extraordinary life story makes Mr. Lin''s writing even more fascinating. This thesis attempts to understand the literature world of Mr. Lin, in which reside both the "thought of Confucius" and his ideal to construct the world culture; therefore, it is necessary to go through all his work -- not only limited partially in any particular period. Only then, can one connect all the dots and show the entire picture of Mr. Lin''s spitritual world, so as to comprehend the true meaning of humor and to understand the art of living and the beauty of life. There are six chapters in this thesis, which are: Chapter 1, Introduction: the motivation of the thesis, the scope of literature, and the method of study. Chapter 2, Mr. Lin in the Modern Literature: Section 1: The current study of Mr. Lin in Taiwan and mainland China. Seciton 2: To justify Mr. Lin according to the evaluation he received in the modern literature history. Chapter 3, Mr. Lin''s background: Section 1: The son of the pastor, the influence of the family and where they lived. Section 2: The school year. Section 3: Love and marriage. Chapter 4, Mr. Lin''s work of humor. Section 1: The period of " Yu Si (Threads of Talk) ". Section 2: The period of journal publishing: " Analects Fortnightly ", "Renjian Shi(Human World)", " Yu Zhou Feng ". Section 3: The essays. Chapter 5, Mr. Lin''s Noveles Section 1: His life and time in overseas when writing noveles. Section 2: " Moment in Peking", " Leaf in the Storm", " The Vermilion Gate", the three most famous of Mr. Lin, and the essence of his thinking. Section 3: " Looking Beyond"and the utopia of Mr. Lin -- his love of the ancient history and his worries of the modern world of industry. Chapter 6, The Conclusion: The afterthought of Mr. Lin, the justification of his status as a writer, his contribution to communicating the western world and the Chinese culture. In this study, Mr. Lin''s thoughts are examined through out his entire work. His sense of humor reveals all through his work and his life. He is the image of Chinese humor. Through his humor and his work, he has brought the Chinese literature to a higher level, a place for the joy of heart and mind. Although he once made an announcement that he made himself as in a mass of contradiction, the essence of his world manifested in his work is both consistence and passionate to the life and the world. Through this study, we hope to help people to have a deeper appreciation to Mr. Lin Yutan.

Since the founding of Taoism in the Eastern Han Dynasty, the literature records that Taoist priests use Fushui (符水)to treat people. The process of using the spells is often used in conjunction with spells. It has become a "character" that most people are talking about, it’s a common impression of Taoism, taoists can draw charms and cast spells. However, Taoism developed extremely quickly during the Song Dynasty. This period is the renaissance era of Taoism, and all kinds of emerging Taoism come out, ex. Shen Xiao Sect(神霄派),Tianxin Sect(天心派), and Qingwei Sect(清微派). As a concrete example of religion and medical treatment, the Taoist study of "Wushangxuanyuan santianyutang dafa"[Great Rites of the Jade Hall, from the Three Celestial Realms of the Culminant, Sublime, and Primordial] (无上玄元三天玉堂大法)analyzes Taoist doctors not only to treat the living, but also to pay attention to the rescue of the dead. The ritual of treatment is an important part of Taoist medicine. This paper examines manifestations of the sacred and profane. This doctoral thesis is divided into three parts, showing the tradition of Taoist rituals in the Southern Song. First, I discuss the relationship between Taoist medical and the Chinese culture, highlighting the key position of religion medical culture in history. Secondly, study the background of the formation of the Yutang Dafa, the text author and the Healing Charm, especially used to treat plague. Finally, I analyzed the Yutang Dafa's transcending deliverance, and further pointed out the innovation of Taoist magic and the possibility of explaining the Tao. "身份的寻索: 林语堂与基督教关係研究." 2013. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b5549686.
The identity problem of Chinese Christians has always been a hot issue in the studies of Chinese Christianity. Chinese Christians are generally caught at the horn of a dilemma as how to unify their Chinese identity and Christian identity, and how to handle the tensions between Chinese culture and Christianity.
Lin Yutang (1895-1976), one of the most influential modern Chinese writers, was renowned for his extensive writings in both Chinese and English. His best-sellers in English, including My Country and My People and The Importance of Living, earned him highest international fame among modern Chinese writers. A less-known but momentous facet of him is his special encounter with Christianity. Lin Yutang was born into a Christian family in a poor mountain village in Southern China, his father being a Presbyterian minister in a local church. He received secondary education at Talmage College, and tertiary education at St.John’s University, both of which were missionary schools. However, Lin renounced Christianity in his twenties and claimed to be a pagan for over thirty years until declaring his return to Christianity in his sixties. Lin’s journey of faith witnessed his lifelong search for the identity as a Chinese Christian, which was constantly undergoing transformation and construction.
In addition to the general introduction and conclusion, this thesis consists of six main chapters, each of which elaborates Lin’s relationship to Christianity during the different stages of his life, focusing on the ways in which he encountered and solved the identity problem of being a Chinese Christian. This thesis adopts E.H. Erikson’s theory on identity as an overall framework, while also referring to theories on cultural identity proposed by some scholars of cultural studies like Stuart Hall. This research makes extensive use of primary materials including Lin’s letters, manuscripts, and other relevant archives apart from his published works.
According to the findings of this research, Lin renounced Christianity in the midst of his identity crisis when he was compelled to choose between being a Chinese and being a Christian. He had described himself a “pagan for more than thirty years, but it doesn’t mean that he forsook his Christian faith. Lin’s particular use of “pagan necessitates careful interpretation and scrutiny. Lin should not be regarded as an anti-Christian writer in spite of his open criticisms of Christianity. It can be seen that Christianity had always been a major contributing factor in shaping Lin’s values and morality since his childhood. In fact, Lin Yutang had never ceased in his faith in God, even though he deliberately kept some distance from Christianity until he found his own way of worshipping God. When he returned to Christianity, he personally merged Christianity and Chinese culture, and established his Christian thoughts characterized with Chinese humanism, and hence reconstructed his identity as a unique Chinese Christian.
