Abstract:

Abstract:
Dihydrodinophysistoxin-1 (dihydro-DTX1, (M-H)−m/z 819.5), described previously from a marine sponge but never identified as to its biological source or described in shellfish, was detected in multiple species of commercial shellfish collected from the central coast of the Gulf of Maine, USA in 2016 and in 2018 during blooms of the dinoflagellate Dinophysis norvegica. Toxin screening by protein phosphatase inhibition (PPIA) first detected the presence of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning-like bioactivity; however, confirmatory analysis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) failed to detect okadaic acid (OA, (M-H)−m/z 803.5), dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1, (M-H)−m/z 817.5), or dinophysistoxin-2 (DTX2, (M-H)−m/z 803.5) in samples collected during the bloom. Bioactivity-guided fractionation followed by liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) tentatively identified dihydro-DTX1 in the PPIA active fraction. LC-MS/MS measurements showed an absence of OA, DTX1, and DTX2, but confirmed the presence of dihydro-DTX1 in shellfish during blooms of D. norvegica in both years, with results correlating well with PPIA testing. Two laboratory cultures of D. norvegica isolated from the 2018 bloom were found to produce dihydro-DTX1 as the sole DSP toxin, confirming the source of this compound in shellfish. Estimated concentrations of dihydro-DTX1 were >0.16 ppm in multiple shellfish species (max. 1.1 ppm) during the blooms in 2016 and 2018. Assuming an equivalent potency and molar response to DTX1, the authority initiated precautionary shellfish harvesting closures in both years. To date, no illnesses have been associated with the presence of dihydro-DTX1 in shellfish in the Gulf of Maine region and studies are underway to determine the potency of this new toxin relative to the currently regulated DSP toxins in order to develop appropriate management guidance.

Abstract:
AbstractThe crystal structure of perhamite, (Ca,Sr)3Al7.7Si3P4O23.5(OH)14.1 8H2O, from the Emmons mine, Maine, USA, has been determined using single crystal X-ray data. The average structure has trigonal symmetry, Pml, with cell parameters a=7.021(1) Å and c = 20.218(1) Å. It was refined to R1 = 0.044 for 618 observed reflections. The structure comprises ordered blocks of crandallite-type structure, centred at z = 0, intergrown parallel to (001) with disordered aluminosilicate structure blocks centred at z = 1/2 to form a microporous structure containing large channels along [100]. These channels are bounded by 8-member rings of 6 tetrahedra (2 SiO4, 2 A1O4 and 2 PO4) and 2 A1O6 octahedra. Calcium atoms and water molecules are distributed in the [100] channels. A model was developed for the local ordering of silicon into the fractionally occupied sites in the (001) layer at z = 1/2 and this model was refined in space group P321 to R1 = 0.041 for 933 observed reflections. The dominant contributors to the local order are Si3O9 rings of corner-shared tetrahedra, together with Si2O7 pairs of tetrahedra. These units corner-link to (Al,Si)O4 tetrahedra above and below the plane at z = 1/2 to form 4-member rings, which in turn corner-share to PO4 tetrahedra in the crandallite blocks to give the 8-member rings. The analysis suggests that 5-coordinated Si may also be present in the (001) plane at z = 1/2.

Abstract:
Tree roots of northern hardwoods are shallow rooted, winter active, and minimally frost hardened; dieback is a winter freezing injury to roots incited by frost penetration in the absence of adequate snow cover and exacerbated by drought in summer. High soil water content greatly increases conductivity of frost. We develop a model based on the sum of z-scores of soil frost (December–February) and drought in summer (May–September) that accurately predicts timing and severity of dieback on sugar maple ( Acer saccharum Marsh.), Betula spp., Fraxinus spp., and red spruce ( Picea rubens Sarg.) in Maine, USA, during 1920–1995. Discrepancies between predicted and actual dieback relate largely to tree population dynamics. Extraordinary levels of dieback on Betula during 1935–1950 occurred under low stress but in mature populations; under high climate stress during 1951–1975, younger surviving Betula proved resistant and showed little dieback. Severe dieback in Acer stands during 1975–1995 may relate to extensive partial cutting, leaving stands open to frost and high water tables. Widespread use of forwarder feller/buncher and wheeled skidders after 1960 commonly left hummocky, irregular surfaces subject to pooling and accelerated frost penetration. Silvicultural applications include modifying harvesting practices to minimize frost complications and use of the model to track and map climatic risk to avoid conditions and locales subject to dieback.

Brief statements are given on recent results in the following areas: 1) The derivation of a variational (maximum) principle for black hole entropy, and an outline of the physically reasonable properties of the related solution for the density of states in the microcanonical equilibrium ensemble (with Jeffrey Melmed, University of Maine). 2) Analysis of topological contributions to black hole entropy in Lovelock gravity, and the corresponding thermodynamic identity (with Jonathan Z. Simon, University of Maryland). 3) Stability analysis for a shell of matter surrounding a black hole in microcanonical (thermal) equilibrium (with Gerald Horwitz, Hebrew University, Jerusalem)—results from this work can be compared with an earlier analysis of the purely mechanical stability of the shell, and with known properties of both the dynamical and thermal stability for the black hole without a shell. 4) The study of a simple ‘singularity'-free model of gravitational collapse, and an examination of the relationship between the ensuing preservation of quantum coherence and the usual perception that mixed states should be associated with the late time emission of Hawking radiation from a classically formed black hole (with Gerard ’t Hooft and Chris Stephens, University of Utrecht).

Abstract:
AbstractZigrasite, ideally MgZr(PO4)2(H2O)4, is a new secondary phosphate mineral from the giant 1972 gem tourmaline-bearing pocket at the Dunton Quarry, Newry, Oxford County, Maine, USA. It occurs as subhedral blocky grains sometimes exceeding 1 mm in maximum dimension and perched on tourmaline. These grains are complex aggregates ofthree distinct phases, zigrasite and two unnamed phases: the Ca analogue of zigrasite, CaZr(PO4)2(H2O)4, and Zr(PO3OH)2(H2O)4. Zigrasite is associated with tourmaline, microcline, quartz, albite, beryl, amblygonite-montebrasite, childreniteeosphorite and apatite, and crystallized as one of the latest minerals during pocket formation. It is offwhite to pale yellow or light tan, translucent with a white streak and a vitreous lustre, and shows light blue to pale yellow cathodoluminescence. Mohs hardness is 3 and the measured and calculated densities are 2.76(4) and 2.66 g/cm3. The mineral has imperfect cleavage in two directions, parallel to (010) and (001), shows no parting, is brittle and has a hackly fracture. In transmitted light, it is colourless and non-pleochroic, biaxial negative with α 1.597(1), β 1.622 (1), γ 1.635 (1), with 2V(meas) = 65.5(4)º and 2V(calc.) = 71º. Zigrasite is triclinic, P , a 5.3049(2) Å, b 9.3372(4) Å, c 9.6282(5) Å, α 97.348(1)º, β 91.534(1)º, γ 90.512(4)º, V 472.79(5) Å3, Z = 2. The seven strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are as follows: d (Ê), I, (hkl): 9.550, 100, (001); 4.108, 70, ; 4.008, 50, (111); 4.589, 40, (110); 3.177, 40, (112); 3.569, 30, (0 2), 2.660, 30, (200),(11),(130); 3.273, 20, (12). Chemical analysis by electron microprobe gave P2O5 37.59, ZrO2 32.27, HfO2 0.34, FeO 0.20, MgO 10.37, ZnO 0.17, F 0.13, LOI 18.60, less O:F 0.05 = total 99.62 wt.%. The resulting empirical formula is (–)Σ=0.99(Zr0.99Hf0.01)Σ=1.00 P2.00O8(H2O)4 on the basis of12 O atoms with H2O = 4 per formula unit from crystal-structure analysis, and the end-member formula is MgZr(PO4)2(H2O)4.

There are two P sites, each of which is solely occupied by P with <P–O> distances of 1.532 and 1.533 Å, respectively. There are two Mg sites, both of which are occupied by Mg and are octahedrally coordinated two O anions and four (H2O) groups with <Mg–O> distances of 2.064 and 2.075 Å, respectively. There is one Zr site, occupied by Zr and octahedrally coordinated by six O anions with a <Zr–O> distance of 2.065 Å . The (ZrO6) octahedron shares corners with six (PO4) tetrahedra, forminga [Zr(PO4)2] sheet parallel to (001). These sheets are stacked in the c direction and linked by (MgO2(H2O)4) octahedra that share O atoms with the (PO4) groups. The structure is formally a heteropolyhedral framework structure, but the linkage is weaker in the c direction, accounting for the marked (001) cleavage.

AbstractThe crystal structure, H bonding and chemical composition of hydroxylherderite from the Bennett pegmatite, Buckfield, Oxford County, Maine, USA were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and neutron Laue diffraction, electron microprobe analysis in wavelength-dispersive mode, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and polarized Raman spectroscopy [Ca(Na0.01Ca1.01)∑1.02Be(Be0.98Li0.01)∑0.99P(Si0.03P0.98)∑1.01O4(OH0.67F0.33)∑1, Z = 4, a = 9.7856(5), b = 7.6607(5), c = 4.8025(3) Å, β = 90.02(3)°, V = 360.02(4) Å3, space group P21/a]. The neutron-structure refinement converged with fully anisotropic displacement parameters to give a final agreement index R1 = 0.0363 for 85 refined parameters and 1614 unique reflections with Fo >4σ(Fo). The structure refinement was used to determine the H position and geometry of H bonding in the structure. One H site was found on the O5 anion with an O–H interatomic distance, corrected for “riding motion”, of 0.996(2) Å. The H bond of hydroxylherderite is bifurcated with O2 and O4 acceptors forming H bonds with O5⋯O2 = 3.163(1) Å, H⋯O2 = 2.544(2) Åand O5–H⋯O2 = 121.8(1)°; O5⋯O4 = 3.081(1) Å, H⋯O4 = 2.428(2) Å and O5–H⋯O4 = 124.4(1)°. The highly non-linear O–H⋯O hydrogen bonds in hydroxylherderite and in the isotypic datolite [ideally CaBSiO4(OH)] are constrained by the tetrahedral network topology. Two main O–H stretching modes were observed in the Raman spectra at 3565 and 3620 cm–1, which are attributed to the bifurcated H bond. Two additional weak bands at 3575 and 3610 cm–1 are attributed to Si–P disorder in the tetrahedral sites. Results of this study will contribute to the correlation of H-bonding geometry and O–H stretching frequencies of highly non-linear H bonds.

Abstract:
Duchowość chrześcijańska i praktyki dalekowschodnie mają bowiem zupełnie inny punkt wyjścia i punkt dojścia. Dlatego rodzą się następujące postulaty wobec środowiska WCCM: wyraźne powiązanie medytacji z życiem sakramentalno-eklezjalnym; zaniechanie praktyk wspólnych medytacji z buddystami; oczyszczenie nauczania z treści sugerujących synkretyzm; zaniechanie czerpania z duchowości niechrześcijańskiej; głębsze osadzenie nauczania w doktrynie i życiu Kościoła.

Abstract:
A study was conducted on the effect of two single practices, including soil tillage and returning straw to soil, and their interaction on soil porosity of maize-wheat cropping system. Field experiments involved four tillage practices, including conventional tillage (C), zero-tillage (Z), harrow-tillage (H) and subsoil-tillage (S), with straw absent (A) or straw present (P). Total porosity, capillary porosity and non-capillary porosity of soil were investigated. The results showed that the soil total porosity of 0–10 soil layer was mostly affected; conventional tillage can increase the capillary porosity of soil, but the non-capillary porosity of S was the highest. Returning of straw can increase the porosity of soil. Through the analysis of affecting force, it can be concluded that interaction of soil tillage and straw is the most important factor to soil porosity, while the controlling factor to non-capillary porosity was soil tillage treatment.

Abstract:
Abstract This review describes some key accomplishments of Günter Herrmann such as the establishment of the TRIGA Mark II research reactor at Mainz University, the identification of a large number of very neutron-rich fission products by fast, automated chemical separations, the study of their nuclear structure by spectroscopy with modern detection techniques, and the measurement of fission yields. After getting the nuclear chemistry group, the target laboratory, and the mass separator group established at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt, a number of large international collaborations were organized exploring the mechanism of deeply inelastic multi-nucleon transfer reactions in collisions of Xe and U ions with U targets, Ca and U ions with Cm targets, and the search for superheavy elements with chemical separations after these bombardments. After the Chernobyl accident, together with members of the Institute of Physics, a powerful laser technique, the resonance ionization mass spectometry (RIMS) was established for the ultra-trace detection of actinides and long-lived fission products in environmental samples. RIMS was also applied to determine with high precision the first ionization potentials of actinides all the way up to einsteinium. In the late 1980ies, high interest arose in results obtained in fusion-evaporation reactions between light projectiles and heavy actinide targets investigating the chemical properties of transactinide elements (Z≥104). Remarkable was the observation, that their chemical properties deviated from those of their lighter homologs in the Periodic Table because their valence electrons are increasingly influenced by relativistic effects. These chemical results could be reproduced with relativistic quantum-chemical calculations. The present review is selecting and describing examples for fast chemical separations that were successful at the TRIGA Mainz and heavy-ion reaction studies at GSI Darmstadt.

Hassliebe. Jewish self-hatred as seen by Sander L. Gilman (part one: from Hermann of Mainz to Johannes Pfefferkorn)The present paper constitutes the first part of the analysis of Sander L. Gilman’s famous book Jewish Self-Hatred, and the pioneering interpretation of the concept of stereotype. According to Gilman, a stereotype emerges as a result of an active collaboration of the person who stereotypises and the outsider. The latter opposes the image imposed by the stereotype, and thus splits the stereotype into a positive and a negative part. By identifying himself with the positive part, the outsider delegates the purity of classification not only to the subgroup he does not feel any attachment to, but also involuntarily legitimises the stereotype, because without his authorisation, the stereotype would merely remain a racist insult. The article is based on the narrations of Jewish converts to Christianity from the Middle Ages to the 15th century. Hassliebe. Abstract:
Selected conducted electromagnetic interference issues in distributed power systemsThis paper addresses the specific issues associated with electromagnetic compatibility that should be taken into account at the developmental stage of distributed systems. The main aim is to establish how far conducted interferences can penetrate the electric grid and how the group of converters, which individually meet EMC standards, influence the mains supply. The measured results of the spread of electromagnetic interference (EMI) current over a typical local electric grid and the low and medium voltage side of the power transformer are presented. The commonly applied, in distributed power systems, four-quadrant converter has been used as a test interference source. The limitations in the applicability of standardized methods for evaluation of aggregated conducted interferences have been presented in a system consisting of a group of two-quadrant frequency converter drives.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper aims to answer the question how to engage the next generation (Z) students in physics. It examines the basic school student’s intrinsic physics motivation and interpersonal interaction in physics experimental activities. We deal with the problem which physics labs (real or virtual) better promote the motivation for learning physics of students. The theoretical basis of the article comes from the self-determination (Self-determination) theory which allows analyzing the intrinsic motivation in the aspect of interpersonal interaction. The mains conclusions are: 1. The technology develops very quickly in the creative society and the new technological solutions are increasingly adapted in practice activities. In the rapid technological progress an controversial situation is observed – the students’ interest in science decreases, fewer and fewer of them decide to study natural science subjects. Increasing of attractiveness of natural science subjects has become a big problem for policy makers and for educators of natural science subjects teachers. 2. Society is undergoing constant change of generations. New generation (Z) is currently learning at school. This generation is sometimes called “technology generation” however it’s interest in science is low and does not differ from previous generations. 3. Physics experimental activities play an important role in increasing motivation of learning physics. The students of new generation do not only perform the traditional physics experiments but also virtual ones. The students of new generation are engaged in the real physics labs with simple traditional devices. Such physics labs are interesting for students, helps to focus and sustain attention. 4. The students of new generation (Z) are also interested in modern physics labs performed in a virtual space with digital devices. The research discloses that the virtual physics labs were evaluated by lower grades compared to real physics labs for the following features: attractiveness, interest and enjoyment. However, the difference between evaluation of virtual and real physics labs by these features wasn’t statistically significant. 5. The experimental physics activity facilitates interpersonal interaction and communication. The students treats equally the interpersonal interaction in the activities of real and virtual physics labs by the following features: interpersonal distance (I feel really far from this person, I feel close to this person);interpersonal trust (I feel that I really trust this person, I do not feel that I could really trust this person); treatment of friendship (I really doubt that I and this person would be ever friends, If I and this person have the opportunity to interact more we become friends). The smaller interpersonal expectations in the future occurs in real physics labs (I would like to have the opportunity to interact with this person more often; I don’t want to communicate with this person in the future really). The statistically significant difference between the assessment of interpersonal interaction in the real and virtual physics labs wasn’t found.

Abstract:
Abstract This article investigates whether and to what extent unfavorable local environmental conditions furnish an important motivator for environmental protest. We do so using individual-level data on objective and subjectively perceived residential road traffic and aircraft noise pollution, pertaining to the cities of Mainz (Germany) and Zurich (Switzerland). By referring to fine-grained noise data, we are able to test the predictive power of grievances and self-interest in explaining protest participation more stringently than has been the case in most previous studies. Theoretically, our study is inspired by Klandermans’ socio-psychological framework of political protest, the pressure-response approach, the self-interest perspective, and the collective-interest model. Our empirical findings only partially confirm the grievances assumption that unfavorable local environmental conditions in the form of residential road traffic and aircraft noise stimulate environmental protest. Noise caused by airplanes seems to be more “protest-inducing” than that produced by road traffic. It is not so much the objectively measurable noise level as its subjective perception and evaluation that are deciding factors. However, in line with Klandermans’ protest framework and other theories of political protest, there are more influential drivers of environmental protest, such as environmental concerns and a left-wing political ideology. Thus, the effects of residential road traffic and aircraft noise turn out to be relatively moderate. Ultimately, this means that our tailored measures of grievances corroborate a relatively well-established finding of protest research.

Abstract:
The rodent fauna of the monsoonal tropics of the Northern Territory comprises 23 native species and two introduced species. Three species (Zyzomys maini, Z. palatalis and Pseudomys calabyi) are endemic to the area, and four species (Pseudomys hermannsburgensis, P. desertor, P. johnsoni and Notomys alexis) enter the area only on its southern (arid) fringe. The rodent fauna is closely related to that of the Kimberley, Western Australia. Distribution maps for all species are given. One species (Z. palatalis) has an extremely restricted range and is regarded as critically endangered. The lack of information on the distribution and abundance of rodents in general in this area is evident in the national classification of five of its species (Xeromys myoides, Mesembriomys macrurus, Notomys aquilo, Pseudomys desertor and Pseudomys johnsoni) as Insufficiently Known. The two introduced rodents (Mus domesticus and Rattus rattus) are virtually restricted to urban and highly modified areas, although R. rattus also occurs on one uninhabited island. In contrast to that of much of the rest of Australia, this rodent fauna has apparently retained its full complement of species since European colonisation. This enduring legacy is attributable largely to the relatively limited modification of its environments. However, three species (Mesembriomys macrurus, Rattus tunneyi and Conilurus penicillatus) appear to be declining. The pattern of decline in these species, and in the mammal fauna generally, is obscured by the very limited historical data. However, declines appear most pronounced in the cattle country of the Victoria River District and Gulf regions. Priorities for the management of this rodent fauna include survey of poorly known areas, survey for poorly known species, monitoring of rodent communities, and landscape-wide management of the three pervasive processes with probably greatest impacts – fire, grazing and feral predators.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose As men nowadays often attend the delivery of their own child, they also have to go through the labor period. In this study, the condition of the expectant fathers attending labor was evaluated. Methods In 2016, fathers who went through labor with their partners in the University medical center of Mainz were interviewed within the first days after delivery and 6 months later. They received a “Fathers questionnaire” concerning their motivation, the valuation of their attendance, their emotions during labor, and concerning the service in the labor ward. Six months later, they also received the validated Impact of Event Scale questionnaire (IES-R). In total, 318 participants answered the “Fathers’ Questionnaire”, 226 the IES-R. Results Father’s attendance during labor was considered to be beneficial for fathers themselves (254, 79.8%), for the mother (272, 85.5%), for the newborn child (187, 58.8%), for the relationship (234, 73.6%). Only four could not see a purpose in their attendance. 73 men (23%) felt helpless, 47 (14.8%) were overwhelmed by the situation, 116 (36.5%) felt fear, 299 (94%) were happy to be present at birth, 27 (8.5%) felt traumatized by experiencing their partners in labor. According to the IES-R, none of the 226 men surveyed showed all symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Conclusion Childbirth is related to positive and negative emotions. Positive emotions are predominant, but come along with negative feelings. In this survey, posttraumatic stress disorder did not occur among men after delivery. Nevertheless, fathers’ needs should be kept in view.

Abstract:
AbstractCyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) is a unique second messenger molecule formed in different cell types and tissues. cGMP targets a variety of downstream effector molecules and, thus, elicits a very broad variety of cellular effects. Its production is triggered by stimulation of either soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) or particulate guanylyl cyclase (pGC); both enzymes exist in different isoforms. cGMP-induced effects are regulated by endogenous receptor ligands such as nitric oxide (NO) and natriuretic peptides (NPs). Depending on the distribution of sGC and pGC and the formation of ligands, this pathway regulates not only the cardiovascular system but also the kidney, lung, liver, and brain function; in addition, the cGMP pathway is involved in the pathogenesis of fibrosis, inflammation, or neurodegeneration and may also play a role in infectious diseases such as malaria. Moreover, new pharmacological approaches are being developed which target sGC- and pGC-dependent pathways for the treatment of various diseases. Therefore, it is of key interest to understand this pathway from scratch, beginning with the molecular basis of cGMP generation, the structure and function of both guanylyl cyclases and cGMP downstream targets; research efforts also focus on the subsequent signaling cascades, their potential crosstalk, and also the translational and, ultimately, the clinical implications of cGMP modulation. This review tries to summarize the contributions to the “9th International cGMP Conference on cGMP Generators, Effectors and Therapeutic Implications” held in Mainz in 2019. Presented data will be discussed and extended also in light of recent landmark findings and ongoing activities in the field of preclinical and clinical cGMP research.

Abstract:
There has been marked recent decline in the terrestrial mammal fauna across much of northern Australia, with most documentation of such decline for lowland areas. Here we report changes in the assemblage of small mammals in a rugged sandstone environment (Nawurlandja, in Kakadu National Park) over intermittent sampling between 1977 and 2002. Four native mammal species were commonly recorded in the original sampling: sandstone antechinus (Pseudantechinus bilarni), northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus), Arnhem rock-rat (Zyzomys maini) and common rock-rat (Z. argurus). Trap success rates declined significantly for the northern quoll, Arnhem rock-rat and all species combined, but increased for the common rock-rat. Despite being recorded commonly in the initial (1977–79) study, no Arnhem rock-rats were recorded in the most recent (2002) sampling. Trap success rates for northern quoll declined by ~90% from 1977–79 to 2002. The reasons for change are not clear-cut. Notably, all sampling occurred before the arrival of cane toads (Rhinella marina), a factor that has caused severe decline in northern quoll numbers elsewhere. Fire was more frequent in the sampling area in the period preceding the 2002 sampling than it was in the period preceding the initial (1977–79) sampling, and this may have contributed to change in mammal abundance.
