Abstract:
Corporate groups have been very important in the economies of many developing countries, including prewar Japan, where zaibatsu controlled approximately one-third of the capital stock. Regression analysis of a new firm-level financial data set distinguishes the economic behavior of zaibatsu member firms from independent firms. The only significant difference between old-zaibatsu member firms and independent firms is that some measures of earnings of old zaibatsu were less stable. The earnings of new-zaibatsu firms were higher, faster-growing and less variable than those of independent firms. T

Abstract:
This paper examines the technical and institutional factors leading to the 'fail ure' of a zaibatsu — a pre-World War II Japanese form of conglomerate organ ization that combined market and hierarchical elements. It suggests that coor dination and legitimacy problems can be particular threats to the survival of some intermediate organizational forms. Drawing on historical and archival materials, the paper chronicles the collapse of the Suzuki zaibatsu, a business empire with sales that at one point equalled 10 percent of Japan's GNP. Abstract:
In the prewar Japanese economy, the most dominant business entity was the Mitsui zaibatsu. This diversified, multi-corporate conglomerate was successful in business terms and in influencing government decision-making. In March 1932, the head executive of Mitsui, Dan Takuma, was assassinated amidst the waves of anti-zaibatsu reactions and the rise of ultranationalism. The assassination gave rise to the Mitsui zaibatsu tenkō (conversion) of 1932-1936, a series of reforms conducted by Dan's successor, Ikeda Seihin, which were intended to fulfill the public relations, business and political needs

Abstract:
Abstract Until the end of the Second World War, the zaibatsu wielded enormous economic power within the Japanese economy. The ‘Big Three ‘ zaibatsu in particular, Mitsui, Mitsubishi, and Sumitomo, had assembled powerful firms in wide-ranging areas such as finance (banking, insurance, and trust operations), mining, machinery manufacture, and chemicals, with the Mitsui and Mitsubishi zaibatsu each including a global trading company (Mitsui Bussan Kaisha and Mitsubishi Shoji Kaisha, respectively). These zaibatsu were broken up in the economic reforms that followed the war, only to re-emerge later
