Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the power struggle between Mobutu's administration and the Catholic Church as it played out in the realm of education. In particular, it focuses on how state ideology, meaning authenticity and Mobutism, pervaded education through textbooks and teaching materials in 1970s Zaire and how the Catholic Church attempted to resist state ideology through education as well. Discourse analysis was used to determine how state dogma and Church opposition were disseminated to youth via educational materials. Furthermore, I examine how and why youth responded to this power struggle through the examination of painting, music and literature created by the 1970s cohort as they aged. Again, discourse analysis is used to understand the meanings conveyed through the art. Youth, I argue, have rejected Mobutu and his ideologies and remain uncertain, perhaps even suspicious, of the Catholic Church's role in Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo).

Abstract:
Le point de départ de cette thèse est le constat d'une crise matrimoniale actuelle chez l'ethnie mbala de la région du Kwango-Kwilu en République démocratique du Congo-ZaTre. L'institution du mariage mbala, fondée sur l'alliance des clans, des époux, des familles, revêtait autrefois un caractère religieux. Se retrouvant au cœur même de la société, elle assurait l'organisation sociale et religieuse et maintenait la cohésion et l'harmonie des rapports sociaux. Cette institution perd progressivement aujourd'hui sa signification religieuse au fur et à mesure que disparaît le caractère religieux de cette alliance lui-même effrité par l'éclatement des croyances traditionnelles. Nous avons voulu ici retracer quelques repères historiques de la vie traditionnelle du peuple mbala, en particulier ses us et coutumes liés à l'institution matrimoniale, puis quelques jalons de la colonisation et de l'évangélisation occidentales, jusqu'à l'indépendance de ce pays. Notre questionnement et nos analyses portent ensuite sur les changements liés à la crise socioreligieuse des Mbala et à ses répercussions sur les valeurs matrimoniales. Comment le peuple mbala tente-t-il d'interpréter cette crise ? Comment voit-il son passé, son présent, marqué depuis 1960 par des initiatives de modernité, comment envisage-t-il son avenir, plus particulièrement, le devenir du christianisme de même que le devenir du mariage mbala ? Quel sens religieux peut-il redonner ou entend-il redonner à celui-ci ? Pour répondre adéquatement à cette question théologique, nous ne pouvions faire l'économie d'une étude conceptuelle où se complètent les approches sociologique et théologique. Nous avons cerné des notions telles que culture, quête d'identité, acculturation, inculturation, et, surtout, dialogue interreligieux. Nous en arrivons à la conclusion que seul un dialogue interreligieux qui se développerait entre, d'une part, le christianisme tel que compris et vécu aujourd'hui et, d'autre part, ce qui reste des traditions mbala, permettrait de reconstruire et de redonner un sens religieux au mariage mbaia. Par notre thèse, nous faisons œuvre ici, pensons-nous, de théologie chrétienne africaine pastorale, et, par son orientation, nous pensons nous situer dans la théologie postérieure à la missiologie chrétienne occidentale, qui dépasse la perspective de la revendication et de la libération pour s'ancrer dans le courant avant-gardiste et prometteur de la théologie chrétienne africaine de la reconstruction.

Abstract:
Toute institution a ses règles de bonne gouvernance qui fixent son champ de compétence et définissent sa nature juridique. Il en est de meme de l'Église catholique et de ses institutions. Les institutions scolaires catholiques sont non seulement soumises aux exigences canoniques qui leur assurent leur catholicité, mais aussi aux lois civiles qui déterminent leur nature. Cette thèse présente les raisons, historiques et actuelles du dysfonctionnement du système scolaire congolais en général et de l'enseignement catholique en particulier. Elle propose aussi les voies qui ouvrent vers une école réellement catholique. Au Congo, l'école catholique est soit privée, soit publique confessionnelle. C'est sous ce dernier aspect que son étude devient intéressante. L'État et l'Église se sont engagés comme collaborateurs sur base de la Convention de gestion signée en 1977. Celle-ci définit le champ de compétence de chacun. Malheureusement, cette convention qui devrait garantir le bon fonctionnement des écoles est aussi source des conflits qui opposent les principaux signataires. Il ne peut en être autrement dans un régime dictatorial ou la volonté d'une seule personne ou d'un groupe de personnes a aussi force de loi. La loi-cadre de l'enseignement national promulguée en 1986, tout en fournissant les éléments valables pour la bonne gestion des écoles, connaît aussi le sort des autres textes juridique Congolais. Les enfants catholique comme tous les autres enfants, ont droit a une éducation saine et intégrale. L'Église comme "mère et éducatrice" se fait le devoir de fonder et de gérer ses propres écoles. Elle donne les éléments formels et substantiels qui déterminent l'identité d'une école qui se veut catholique. Ces éléments fixent les quatre champs de compétence de l'école catholique: qualité de l'enseignement général, qualité de l'enseignement religieux, qualité de l'éducation catholique, implication de l'école catholique dans la mission de l'Église. Comment concilier la législation civile et la législation canonique? L'étude du canon 803 du Code de droit canonique fournit des éléments valables pour un nouveau débat sur la nature juridique des écoles au Congo. C'est le travail que nous avons réalisé dans cette thèse pour l'interêt de tous, parents, élèves, Église et État.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the phenomenon of emigrant Zairo-Congolese musicians in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania and their attempts to integrate into these societies through a variety of strategies that overtly and covertly employ political elements. Remmy Ongala, Samba Mapangala, and the members of Orchestra Maquis all spent time in one of these countries and shaped their sound and messages in these settings, politics being a significant part of their work. While political communication studies focus on structures, institutions, and the media, it is the case that in numerous African contexts music is an integral part of political understanding and participation. Drawing upon the works of scholars such as Michael Urban, Mark Mattern, and Uche Onyebadi, this chapter combines varied fields such as ethnomusicology, political communication, and cultural studies to provide a close understanding of these musical emigrants as well as an exploration of the social trajectories in their work over the course of the last half century.
