Abstract:

Youth participatory action research (YPAR) is a form of critical participatory action research that provides young people with opportunities to identify injustices in their current social realities, to gather and analyze data about these phenomena, and to determine actions that will begin to rectify their negative outcomes. A growing body of evidence suggests that YPAR projects improve outcomes for individual youth as well as the organizations/settings they act on. Despite this, the extent to which YPAR can and should be used in institutions that reproduce dominant cultural power dynamics remains a subject of debate. Building on recent studies that explore the tensions inherent in school-based YPAR projects, in this theoretical essay Gretchen Brion-Meisels and Zanny Alter put three fundamental tenets of YPAR—participation, purpose, and level of analysis—into conversation with each other. Illustrating their points using examples from an ongoing YPAR project that explores barriers to on-time graduation at an urban high school, they describe the ways in which these tenets are central to YPAR projects and identify several elements of schooling that complicate decision making around these fundamental ideas.

Abstract:

Sunni Islam recognizes four sources from and through which the laws governing its conduct are derived. These are the Qur'an, the Sunna of the Prophet, the consensus (ljmā') of the community and its scholars, and qiyās, the juridicological method of inference. The first two sources provide the jurist with the material from which he is to extract through qiyas and ijtihād (the disciplined exercise of mental faculty) the law which he believes to the best of his knowledge to be that decreed by God. Except for a relatively limited number of cases where the Qu'an and the Sunna offer already-formulated legal judgments, the great majority of furū' cases, which constitute the body of positive and substantive law, are derived by qiyas. Thus, qiyas may be used to “discover” the judgment of a new case provided that this case has not already been solved in the two primary sources. The process of legal reasoning which qiyas involves is charged with innumerable difficulties not the least of which is finding the circle of common similarity, the 'illa, between the original case in the texts and the new case which requires a legal judgment. Since finding the 'illa entails a certain amount of guesswork (zann) on the part of the jurist and since it is highly probable that the 'illa is extracted from a text which is not entirely reliable or a text capable of more than one interpretation, Sunni jurists deemed the results of qiyas to be probable (zannī). It is only at this point that consensus may enter into play in the legal process. Should Muslims, represented by their jurists, reach an agreement on the validity of a zanni legal judgment, such judgment is automatically transferred from the domain of juristic speculation to that of certainty (qat', yaqīn). Consensus then renders this judgment irrevocable, not to be challenged or reinterpreted by later generations. Furthermore, this judgment, being so irrevocable, acquires a validity tantamount to that of the Qur'an and the highly reliable traditions embodied in the Sunna of the Prophet. Thus, such a case with its established judgment becomes a precedent according to which another new legal question may be solved. It is only in this sense that consensus functions as a source of law, a source which is infallible.

Zanna robusticephalica sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Fulgoridae: Zanninae: Zannini), representing the third species of the planthopper genus Zanna Kirkaldy, 1902 from China, is described and illustrated from Yunnan in southwestern China. Scanning electron micrographs of the antennal sensilla, rostral apex, hind tarsal segments, gonoplac and wax glands of the new species are provided. The generic diagnostic characters of Zanna are redefined and the autapomorphies are proposed to support the monophyly of the genus. A check-list of the Oriental Zanna species is included.

Abstract:

Prejudice is one of the causes of horizontal conflict in the society today. Starting from prejudice giving rise to excessive suspicion which led to slander and disharmony between one another. Through this article, the author discusses prejudice in the Koran as a source of solutions to all diseases, including prejudice as a social disease. The author uses thematic interpretations as a method in constructing the Qur'anic insights related to verses examining prejudice by taking the keyword az-zannu. Through this word, it is elaborated in depth the nature of az-zannu and its characteristics in the Qur'an, and how it relates to the az-zannu with its own prejudices. Finally, the author also describes the influence of prejudice in modern society today.

Dalam penelitian kualitatif ini dilakukan studi deskriptif-analitis dengan metode penelitian pustaka (library research). Hasil temuan mengungkapkan bahwa para ulama uṣūl dan sebagian mufasir sepakat bahwa ketentuan qaṭ’iy al-thubūt/al-wurūd/al-naql teraplikasi pada nās Alquran dan Sunah mutawa>tirah. Ketentuan qaṭ’iy al-dalālah teraplikasi pada nās Alquran dan Sunah yang memenuhi al-iḥtimālāt al-‘ashrah, ijmā’ ṣarīḥ, qiyās mujma’ ‘alayh (konsensus bersama para mujtahid), dan uṣūl al-fiqh. Adapun ketentuan ẓanniy al-thubūt/al-wurūd/al-naql teraplikasi pada sunah ghayr mutawātirah. Sedangkan ketentuan ẓanniy al-dalālah teraplikasi pada nās Alquran, sunah, ijmā’ sukūtī, dan qiyās fardiy atau qiyās ghayr mujma’ ‘alayh.

Abstract:

Lapangan ijtihad sangat luas dalam fiqh. Para ulama sepakat tentang hal tersebut pada hal-hal yang tidak ada nash ataupun pada dalalah yang masih dhanni. Tetapi pada persoalan yang telah ada nash dan yang bersifat qathâ€™i al-dalalah urusan yang menjadi perbedaan para ulama. Hal ini dikarenakan adanya beberapa ijtihad, khususnya Umar, yang melakukan ijtihad terhadap hukum yang telah ada nashnya dan juga pada dalil yang telah qathâ€™i. Penelitian ini menggunakan dekriptif analisis dengan pendekatan historis normatif. Hasil Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Nash dari segi wurud dan tsubut adalah qathâ€™i, karena semua ayatnya sampai kepada kita dengan jalan mutawatir.Namun dari segi penunjukannya menjadi qathâ€™I ad-dalalah dan zanni ad-dalalah. Pembagian ini untuk menjelaskan bahwa ada hal-hal yang sudah terang disebutkan dalam al-Qurâ€™an dan hadis dan ada yang masih perlu diijtihadkan agar dapat diimplementasikan dan diamalkan. Nash qathâ€™i manurut para ulama ushuliun tidak boleh menjadi objek ijtihad karena sudah jelas dan terang disamping juga agar tidak terjadi kekacauan dan terlalu bebas dalam melakukan ijtihad, serta tidak memasukkan hal-hal seperti kewajiban shalat lima waktu, zakat dan hukum-hukum syaraâ€™ lainnya yang telah disepakati menjadi pembahasan ijtihad. Namun diantara ulama ushuliun sendiri masih berbeda dalam menentukan mana yang menjadi dali qathâ€™I dan mana yang menjadi dalil zanni. Persoalan yang menyangkut dengan dalil qathâ€™idan dalil zanni ini, tidak hanya terjadi perbedaan dalam pengkatagorian, akan tetapi adajuga yang membatasi dengan syarat-syarat tertentu, seperti yang dilakukan oleh Asy-Syatibi dan ada yang menolak sama sekali dikotomo qathâ€™i dan zanni,namun mereka tidak cukup kuat dalam mengemukakan alasan-alasan yang dapat kita terima.

ARGUING AGAINST CRITICAL MODELS of Céézanne's pictorial tech nique that posit a delimitable ''unit'' of manufacture as the basis for the composition of his pictures, and challenging certain idéées reççues of Greenbergian modernism that continue to frame our view of Céézanne's art, ''Céézanne and Lucretius at the Red Rock'' offers a new perspective from which to think about meaning and form in Céézanne's painting. The essay takes as its starting point evidence that during the last decade of his life Céézanne was reading Lucretius, the Roman poet whose De rerum natura espouses the ancient philosophy of atomistic materialism. From this connection ''Céézanne and Lucretius at the Red Rock'' does not propose Céézanne as a painter of an atomistic worldview - an argument that would yield for the formal analysis of Céézanne's pictorial technique little more than yet another version of what is frequently characterized as Céézanne's ''constructive stroke.'' Instead, this essay turns on a Lucretius who was a poet profoundly attuned to the complex ways metaphorical figuration functioned in his materialist imagination of the world. On the basis of a scrupulous analysis of one late landscape by Céézanne, ''The Red Rock'' of circa 1895, this essay advances ways that such a materialism - one, in other words, acutely self-aware of its own construction on the basis of metaphor - can be seen as deeply resonant with formal and thematic concerns of Céézanne's art. Using Lucretian materialism as its heuristic in this manner, ''Céézanne and Lucretius at the Red Rock'' also sets forth new proposals about Céézanne's revolutionary use of color, contributes to the long-standing critical effort to articulate more precisely the elusive meaning of one of Céézanne's key theoretical terms, ''realization,'' and concludes with a meditation on the deeper issues involved in the melancholic preoccupations of so many of Céézanne's last canvases.

Abstract:

This essay explores scenes of zany comedy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, across three sites: a television sketch about repeated electrical shock; the careers of freelance electricians known as vishoka; and encounters between residents and power utility inspectors. Drawing on the work of Sianne Ngai, as well as long-term ethnographic research, the essay argues that zaniness manifests the structural paradoxes of entrepreneurial populations that have alternately been described as the lumpen, the informal, or simply the urban poor. Specifically, it argues that such populations are often consigned to permanent improvisation and that this engenders a social freedom that, in some respects, remains indistinguishable from constraint. The zany can thus critically nuance portraits of livelihood and citizenship practices in urban Africa by bringing their freedoms and constraints into the same frame.

Abstract:

Carl Whitaker, MD, zany master of family therapy, has developed a therapy of the absurd, a tongue-in-cheek put on that inverts common therapeutic methods and produces dramatic results. Although sharing the same objectives as other experiential therapists, he uses sharply different approaches. He contends with his clients, confronts and cajoles them into change. Rather than eradicate the pathology in a family, he attempts to augment it until it “self-destructs.” He makes little attempt to be supportive, to adhere to a counseling theory, or to exhibit sympathy. Nevertheless, some of his work is exemplary for the pastoral counselor. His pattern challenges us to take a strong stand in our faith, to place direct responsibility upon the counselees themselves, and to avoid being overly active in helpfulness. Whitaker's zany methods could inspire our own in being aware and effective.

Abstract:

The commedia dell'arte is a type of improvised acting based around the masked stock characters of the merchant, lawyer and servant, whose earliest names were Magnifico, il Dottore and Zanni (Plate I). From 1571 onwards, it was spread throughout Europe by visiting troupes of professional Italian actors, whose members, activities and travels are, for the most part, well-documented. The way in which it reached Bavaria is less clear. Records, including three festival books, suggest that already as early as February 1568, when crown Prince Wilhelm married Princess Renée of Lorraine in Munich, the commedia dell'arte was an established and popular feature of Bavarian court festivities, to which it contributed in three contexts. Some of its costumes were used in masquerades; the Venetian Magnifico, or merchant, and his servant Zanni (the servant-master pair who became the central comic focus of the commedia dell'arte) appeared as masked clowns on several occasions, and on 8 March 1568 there was a full-length play whose description in Massimo Troiano's festival book is generally acknowledged as the earliest known comprehensive description of a complete commedia dell'arte performance.

Abstrak: Zakat fitrah yang dihukumi wajib menjadi salah satu penyebab rigiditas dalam pelaksanaannya sehingga pencapaian terhadap tujuan hakikidiperintahkannya zakat fitrah cenerung terkalahkan oleh persepsi keabsahan pelaksanaan zakat itu sendiri sesuai ketentuan formalnya. Dekonstruksiterhadap hukum wajib zakat fitrah merupakan salah satu upaya yang bisa dilakukan untuk memecah kekakuan tersebut. Penelitian terhadap golonganyang berpandangan tidak wajibnya zakat fitrah beserta argumentasinya ini menghasilkan kesimpulan besar bahwa secara teoritis pandangan tersebutdimungkinkan kemunculannya karena dalil syarak yang mendasarinya bernilai zanni, baik wurud ataupun dalalah-nya, didukung pula oleh teori al-jam’ wa altawfiq, istinbat bayani terhadap makna farada, dan teori nasakh. Di samping itu, dari perspektif maqasid al-syari’ah dengan berubahnya situasi sosial-ekonomiyang mengharuskan zakat fitrah, maka perubahan hukum tersebut, dari wajib menjadi sunnah, adalah sesuatu yang masuk akal. Hal ini didukung pula olehkajian kesejarahan (tarikh al-tasyri’) yang menyimpulkan bahwa lafaz farada pada hadis tentang zakat fitrah lebih logis dimaknai secara bahasa, yang berartimenentukan (qaddara), bukannya menurut pengertian syarak, yakni mewajibkan, karena konsep tentang ahkam al-khamsah belum dikenal pada saatitu. Rubino and Zanna (5) have responded to our comments (1) on their report (4) on the association of personality disorders with psoriasis and have presented data comparing the personality characteristics of psoriasis patients with those in urticaria patients. The problems that remain with their methodology are that dental controls may not be equivalent to dermatologic conditions, and in the urticaria study, no data on premorbid functioning were provided to differentiate state vs trait phenomena, and they did not control for duration of illness.

Abstract:

An annotated list of eighteen species of the family Fulgoridae from Khao Krachom Mountain, Ratchaburi Province of Thailand is given. Three species, Pyrops connectens (Atkinson, 1885), Pyrops spinolae (Westwood, 1842) and Zanna nobilis (Westwood, 1838), are recorded from Thailand for the first time and two species of the genus Dichoptera Spinola, 1839 represent a new country record or even a species new to science. Data on the preferred habitat and host plants of lanternflies are also provided and briefly discussed.

Abstract:

The objectives of this research are; (1) Identifying the form of illocutionary speech acts found in Gamal Al Ghitani's Zainy Barakat novel; (2) Determine the pragmatic function of illocutionary speech acts contained in the novel Zainy Barakat by Jamal Al Ghitani.This research is a qualitative research, the research design is in the form of a literature study (study research), the data collection technique is a note-taking technique, the research instrument uses data cards and data recapitulation sheets, while the data analysis method uses the extralingual equivalent method. In this study research, 155 speech acts were found which were divided into 5 forms of illocutionary speech acts and 4 speech act functions. Based on the analysis of the utterances, it can be detailed as follows; 43 forms of assertive illocutionary speech, 61 forms of directive illocutionary speech, 11 forms of speech illocutionary commissive, 38 forms of expressive illocutionary speech, and 2 forms of declarative illocutionary speech. Of the five forms of illocutionary speech, directive speech is the most common, and the form of declarative speech is the least used. Pragmatic functions are classified into four kinds of functions, namely competitive, conventional, collaborative and conflictual. In the novel Zayni Barakat found four kinds of functions which are detailed as follows: 58 competitive functions, 28 conventional functions, 47 collaborative functions and 22 conflictive functions. From these data, the most pragmatic function found is the competitive function, and the least is the conflictive function.

Abstract:

Theoretical models for the evaluation of fatigue on reinforced concrete structures most commonly fall into two major groups. The first and more widely used group of models is based on S-N curves and the static stress state. These models provide the final load cycle count until structural failure but do not consider redistribution of stresses within the structure or strain evolution over time. The second group accounts for deterioration of concrete over time. However, due to difficulties in application and high computational costs, these models are not fully evolved. A new simplified iterative method for reinforced concrete columns based on previous research by Zanuy et al. (2009) is presented in this paper. This model allows for estimation of stress redistribution and progressive degradation of concrete under high-cycle loading. Teoriniai modeliai, taikomi gelžbetoninių konstrukcijų nuovargio poveikiui vertinti, paprastai yra skirstomi į dvi pagrindines grupes. Pirmoji modelių grupė, kuri ir yra labiausiai paplitusi, remiasi S-N kreivėmis ir statiniu konstrukcijos įtempių būviu. Šie modeliai pateikia tik galutinį apkrovos ciklų skaičių iki konstrukcijos suirimo ir juos taikant neatsižvelgiama į betono įtempių persiskirstymą ar deformacijų kitimo raidą. Antroji grupė apima irimo teorijos modelius, kuriuose atsižvelgiama į laipsnišką betono silpnėjimą. Tačiau dėl pernelyg sudėtingo realaus konstrukcinio pritaikymo ir dėl per didelių skaičiavimo programų resursų poreikio praktinis šių modelių taikymas nėra išvystytas. Todėl, remiantis Zanuy et al. (2009) pasiūlytu modeliu, kuris leidžia įvertinti laipsnišką betono įtempių degradaciją ir jų perskirstymą, buvo sukurtas ir išplėtotas supaprastintas ir aiškus gelžbetoninių kolonų, veikiamų daugiacikle apkrova, iteracinis analizės metodas.

Sīr Banī Yās is an island in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi, off the coast from Jabal Dhanna (Zanna) (fig. 1). Much of the landscape of the island has been entirely changed in recent years through earthmoving and landfill although the pre-modern terrain still exists in a few areas. There has also been widespread tree planting, and vast areas of Ṣīr Banī Yas are fenced to protect the plantations from gazelle, great herds of which roam free on the island. Nevertheless, limited areas with significant archaeological remains survived the plantation and the associated trenching.

Com base nos limitados documentos restantes, registrou-se um verdadeiro e próprio mercado moderno do espetáculo com os novos cerretani-ciarlatani, charlatães da praça, que assumiram o papel de terapeutas populares através de diversos recursos cênicos como as máscaras dos zanni. Esses ciarlatani-espetáculos constituíam uma estrutura para propiciar e explorar as expectativas do divertimento de um público não mais elitista, com um fim cômico - espetáculos de máscaras. Os ciarlatani tornam-se comediantes e se servem da comédia como meio eficaz para atrair a venda de suas mercadorias e deixam um imenso legado na história dos espetáculos de lugares públicos.
