Abstract:
Starting from the concept of sustainability in fashion, the aim of our research is to analyse to what extent the Zara Join Life collection is sustainable, environmentally friendly (as advertised), and transparent, in terms of the information provided to the consumer, in order to offer Zara’s fashion consumers a set of aspects to take into account when intending to buy responsibly, such as the composition of the product, the percentage of recyclable materials used, its origin, etc. Our practical goal is to generate a gradual change in Zara consumers’ behaviour by creating a set of basic skills to transform one from a fast, superficial consumer into a slow, conscious customer with decision-making power. We analysed the Zara Join Life collection, which is advertised on the company’s website as supporting sustainability as a continuous project. The methodology consisted of a documentation-learning stage in order to reach the stages of data collection, data processing, and information organization—the methods used for the analysis of fashion consumers’ behaviours. The analysis was conducted on 40 Zara Join Life collection garments (10 women’s clothing items, 10 men’s clothing items, and 20 garments for kids, both girls and boys) sold online on Zara’s website. The collected research data were analysed and interpreted within the case study.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Hump-nosed vipers of the genus Hypnale are the most common cause of venomous snakebites in Sri Lanka. The genus includes three species: Hypnale hypnale, Hypnale zara and Hypnale nepa. Of them, H. hypnale bites are the most common and are the subject of many publications. The epidemiology and clinical features of bites by the other two species have been less investigated. Methods We conducted a prospective observational study of H. zara bites from January 2015 to June 2020 at the Teaching Hospital, Ratnapura, Sri Lanka. Data were collected for 5.5 years in the wet zone of the island, where the principal investigator did assessment of all patients and the data collection. Results H. zara envenoming was confirmed through identification of dead or live snake specimens brought with the patients. Of the 480 patients with proven hump-nosed viper bites, H. zara bites accounted for 105 (22%), including dry bites (n=5 [5%]) and envenoming (n=100 [95%]), with gender distribution of 65 (62%) males and a mean age of 43.1 y. Most bites occurred on the lower limbs (n=71 [68%]) in the daytime (n=69 [66%]) in home gardens (n=45 [43%]). A total of 100 (95%) patients had local manifestations, including pain (n=100 [95%]), swelling (n=100 [95%]), bleeding (n=20 [19%]), bruising (n=11 [10%]), lymphadenopathy (n=10 [9%]), necrosis at the bite site (n=9 [9%]) and blistering (n=8 [8%]). Seven (6.7%) patients showed systemic effects, including acute kidney injury (n=2 [2%]), microangiopathic haemolysis (n=2 [2%]), sinus bradycardia (2 [2%]) and one (1%) each had coagulopathy, thrombotic microangiopathy, Kounis syndrome and ischaemic changes on electrocardiography. Eosinophilia was a significant haematological finding (n=26 [25%]) and 16 (15%) had leucocytosis and 15 (14%) had neutrophilia. Ninety six percent of patients (n=101) recovered. Antivenom is not available for hump-nosed viper bites in Sri Lanka and therefore patients were managed conservatively. Conclusions This study shows that H. zara bites mainly cause local envenoming and rarely systemic effects.

Abstract:
The hump-nosed vipers which compromise ‘ Hypnale hypnale’, ‘H. zara’ and ‘H. nepa’ have been highly venomous snakes and ‘H. zara’ and ‘H. nepa’ are indigenous to Sri Lanka and ‘H. hypnale’ is endemic to Sri Lanka and India. The clinical presentations range from local swelling, blistering and necrosis at the site of bite with distinct fang marks to systemic envenomations such as coagulopathy, thrombotic microangiopathy, acute kidney injury and death in severe cases. Here, we report a case of thrombotic microangiopathy following hump-nosed viper ‘ Hypnale’ bite.

Abstract:
Uniqlo has recently been challenging the paradigm behind the phenomenal success of Zara: while Zara has been all about fashion, Uniqlo claims to be all about functionality. Here I examine this corporate narrative within the context of a new paradigm in cultural sociology that brings to the fore the material and functional aspects of clothing consumption (as opposed to its fashion and identity-related aspects). This case study shows that we might be able to understand the contemporary consumer better, if we study the corporate narratives of our most popular retailers of fashion. After all, their survival depends upon a correct understanding of how exactly today’s consumers behave.

Abstract:

Abstract:
During his 75 years of life from the 9th of March 1942 until the 28th of September 2017 Nicholas Wilkinson was a very productive and hardworking individual. He grew up in the north east of England in Corbridge, a small rural town in Northumberland. He was the third child of Zara and Tom Wilkinson and grew up together with his brother Warwick, his sister Joanna. He told me that as a child he played a lot by the riverside, and in their large family house garden and that, amongst other things, his outdoor childhood promoted a deep love of nature in him. His mother Zara had artistic abilities and his father, Tom a very good sense of judgement; Nicholas inherited these talents and characteristics from them. He was educated at Corchester Preparatory School in Corbridge and then at Bryanston School in Blanford, Dorset.
