ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF), considered as the most stable heavy metal fluoride glass and the excellent host for rare-earth ions, has been extensively used for efficient and compact ultraviolet, visible, and infrared fiber lasers due to its low intrinsic loss, wide transparency window, and small phonon energy. In this paper, the historical progress and the properties of fluoride glasses and the fabrication of ZBLAN fibers are briefly described. Advances of infrared, upconversion, and supercontinuum ZBLAN fiber lasers are addressed in detail. Finally, constraints on the power scaling of ZBL

A new family of modified ZBLAN glass compositions has been synthesized which provides better stability against crystallization. A preliminary study of the Hruby factor HR shows higher values as compared to a ZBLAN glass prepared under the same conditions, utilizing similar high purity starting materials. Large rods of clear glass with a 1.5 cm diameter and up to 17 cm in length were easily obtained. Results will be presented on the physical properties and crystallization behavior of these high stability glasses.

A diode-pumped Q-switched Er3+:ZBLAN double-clad, single-transverse mode fiber laser is practically realized. The Q-switched laser characteristics as a function of pump power, repetition rate, and fiber length are experimentally investigated. The results obtained show that the Q-switched operation with 46 µJ pulse energy, 56 ns long pulses, and 0.821 kW peak power is achieved at a pulse repetition rate of 10 kHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest-ever demonstrated peak power emitted from an actively Q-switched, single-transverse mode Er3+:ZBLAN fiber laser operating near 2.8 µm

We report on successful synthesis of ZBLAN glass. Different purity of zirconium tetrafluoride used for synthesis and fluorinating agents were analyzed to obtain high optical quality glass. The ionic conductivity and permittivity of glasses based on ZrF4, BaF2, LaF3, AlF3 and NaF (ZBLAN) or PbF2, InF3, BaF2, AlF3 and LaF3 (PIBAL) are studied. The influence of the glass composition on the glass transition temperature (Tg) and on the crystallization temperature (Tx) is reported. For all ZBLAN glasses the temperature dependencies of the ionic conductivity are close one to another (s500 = 8(2)·10-6 S/cm) and their conduction activation enthalpies are equal to 0.82(1)eV. With a superior transmittance in the mid-infrared, fluoride fibers such as ZBLAN fibers can be used to develop fiber-based components for that spectrum. In this thesis, we investigate the fusion splicing of ZBLAN fibers as well as the fabrication of long-period gratings and Mach-Zehnder interferometer structures. Average losses in the range of 0.23-0.31 dB are achieved for the fusion splicing among multi-mode and single-mode ZBLAN fibers. In the C- and O-bands, notches of depths ranging from 6-17 dB are obtained with mechanically induced long-periog gratings. All-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferome

ZBLAN glass shows great potential in the application of long-haul telecommunication cables. However, during processing in the fibre-drawing temperature region, the material tends to crystallize, resulting in large transmission losses. In this study, ZBLAN glass was processed with different cooling rates to discern how the rate of cooling affects the process of crystallization. The results of this study revealed that by rapidly cooling ZBLAN test samples, it was possible to completely impede all crystallization phenomena and yield a fully amorphous glass suitable for use as an optical waveguide

However, not until recently was net cooling actually observed experimentally in a solid. By pumping Yb3+ to the lower Stark levels of the 2F5/2 manifold, followed by population redistribution across this manifold and fluorescence to the ground state, removal of heat from a ZBLAN-derived fluoride host was achieved.
