With a superior transmittance in the mid-infrared, fluoride fibers such as ZBLAN fibers can be used to develop fiber-based components for that spectrum. In this thesis, we investigate the fusion splicing of ZBLAN fibers as well as the fabrication of long-period gratings and Mach-Zehnder interferometer structures. Average losses in the range of 0.23-0.31 dB are achieved for the fusion splicing among multi-mode and single-mode ZBLAN fibers. ZBLAN glass shows great potential in the application of long-haul telecommunication cables. However, during processing in the fibre-drawing temperature region, the material tends to crystallize, resulting in large transmission losses. In this study, ZBLAN glass was processed with different cooling rates to discern how the rate of cooling affects the process of crystallization. The results of this study revealed that by rapidly cooling ZBLAN test samples, it was possible to completely impede all crystallization phenomena and yield a fully amorphous glass suitable for use as an optical waveguide

L'analyse du solide residuel montre un melange d'une phase amorphe et des composes cristallises bazr#2f#1#0,2h#2o et nabazr#2f#1#1. La separation elements de la matrice du verre-traces est effectuee par complexation a l'apdc, puis extraction a la dibk. Les rendements de separation sont toujours de l'ordre de 100%. Foram estudados os processos de transferência de energia (TE) dos níveis 4I13/2 ; 4I11/2 do Er3+ e 5I7 ; 5I6 do Ho3+ no LiYF4 (YLF) e no ZBLAN, para os íons desativadores Nd3+, Tb3+ ou Eu3+. Os microparâmetros de interação dessas TE foram obtidos utilizandose o método da integral de sobreposição e os resultados indicaram que o íon de Eu3+ é o melhor desativador do primeiro estado excitado do Ho3+ no YLF e o Nd3+ é o mais eficiente desativador do Er3+ no YLF e ZBLAN. An investigation of small-signal amplification on the 3Po-3F2 transition in a praseodymium-doped fluorozirconate optical fibre at the 632.8 nm He-Ne wavelength, has been conducted. The optical gain is fundamentally related to the spectroscopic characteristics of praseodymium-doped in a fluorozirconate glass host together with optical fibre parameters, that determine the physical characteristics of the waveguide. These parameters have been experimentally determined independently of the gain and used to model the performance of the amplifier.
