Nanoparticles are increasingly used for biomedical purposes. In the past decades, much attention has been paid to toxicity assessment of nanoparticles prior to clinical and biological applications. Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are being introduced into the consumer market significantly. Effects and accumulation patterns of IONPs were studied using zebrafish embryos. Nanoparticles of iron were synthesized by biological reduction of spinach, using 0.1 M Ferric Chloride. These nanoparticles were characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR and AAS were found to have the size range of 100 to 250 nm. Fi

Stanniocalcin (STC) formerly called hypocalcin or teleocalcin, is a 50-kDa disulfide-linked homodimeric glycoprotein that was originally identified in fish and secreted from the corpuscles of Stannius (CS). One of the main functions of STC-1 is Ca2+ uptake inhibition; however, the mechanisms remain unknown. In the present study, we provide molecular evidence to elucidate how zebrafish STC-1 regulates Ca2+ uptake in zebrafish embryos. In a wide variety of tissues including the kidney, brain, gill, muscle, and skin, zstc-1 was expressed. Incubating zebrafish embryos in low-Ca2+ (0.02 mM) freshwa

Abstract:
Although the majority of adult teleosts excrete most of their nitrogenous wastes as ammonia, several fish species are capable of producing urea early in development. In zebrafish, it is unclear whether this results from a functional ornithine-urea cycle (O-UC) and, if so, how it might be regulated. This study examined the spatiotemporal patterns of gene expression of four major O-UC enzymes: carbamoyl phosphate synthase III (CPSIII), ornithine transcarboxylase, arginosuccinate synthetase, and arginosuccinate lyase, using real-time PCR and whole mount in situ hybridization. The development of spinal circuits underlying motor behaviors was examined in zebrafish. Zebrafish embryos showed three sequential, stereotyped behaviors: a transient period of spontaneous coiling contractions, followed by touch-evoked rapid coils, and swimming. Lesioning the hindbrain eliminated swimming and touch responses, but not the spontaneous contractions.<br>The first (spontaneous) behavior was chosen for further analysis in order to characterize the underlying circuit. In vivo patch clamp recordings were obtained from identified spinal neurons. These neurons showed periodic depolariza

Cardiac, metabolic and growth response of early-stage chicken embryos to perturbations in yolk environment was investigated. Also, effects of parental hypoxia exposure on hypoxia resistance, thermal tolerance and body length of zebrafish larvae were investigated. In the first study, thyroxine, triiodothyronine and testosterone produced differential effects on heart rate and development rate of chicken embryos during the first 4 days of development. Triiodothyronine caused a dose-dependent increase in heart rate when applied at 40 or 70 hours of age, while thyroxine caused a dose-dependent in
