Full textQThe detection of trace pollutants is an important issue for monitoring air quality. Terahertz spectroscopy, used to probe spectral regions rich in molecular absorption, is an appropriate technique for measuring atmospheric pollution. This work of thesis consisted in developing and characterizing an ultrasensitive spectrometer to measure molecules of atmospheric interest. A terahertz spectrometer was mounted using a frequency multiplication chain emitting up to 900 GHz. The detection sensitivity has been optimized and characterized. In collaboration with the IEMN, a terahertz spectrometer using a vector network analyzer transmitting up to 500 GHz as a source, has been set up and characterized. The potential of terahertz spectroscopy has been demonstrated to monitor in real time the evolution of concentrations of gaseous pollutants during a chemical reaction and to deduce the kinetic rates. Following the rotational transitions of H2CO and CO of a photolysis reaction of formaldehyde, kinetic reaction rates were determined. Detection of radicals is a challenge because of their high reactivity. The configuration of our spectrometer was adapted to optimize sensitivity and to study the photolysis reaction of acetaldehyde using "Photosensitization" by mercury. Frequency modulation and Zeeman effect modulation were used to study HCO. The sensitivity was optimized, quantified HCO and measured over 200 absorption lines. A spectroscopy study of HCO is initiated in order to optimize the parameters of the international data bases

Full textThis thesis presents the study of coherent light interaction with a sub-wavelength atomic alkali vapor layer confined in a nano-cell and applications for the formation of narrow optical resonances. We develop a theoretical model describing the resonant interaction of the laser light with the thin alkali vapor layer in the presence of an external static magnetic field. We show that due to a transient regime of interaction, only slow atoms contribute to the signal and their transmission spectrum is essentially Doppler-free. The nature of the obtained spectra makes the transmission spectroscopy from a nano-cell a convenient technique to perform studies of closely-spaced atomic transitions and investigate their behavior in magnetic fields. Experimental realizations for magnetic field up to 7000~G show an excellent agreement between theory and experiment. We also explore the Faraday rotation of the plane polarization of light with the propagation through the thin atomic slab. We see that despite a small angle of rotation, Faraday rotation spectra exhibit resonances narrower than that for transmission. At last, we investigate new possibilities to form narrow optical resonances in nano-cells and show that second derivation processing of transmission spectra yields the strongest line narrowing among all methods studied in this thesis

Full textThis thesis describes experimental work on different techniques aiming to achieve control of the quantum state of atoms and molecules, envisaging applications in quantum computing, metrology and astrophysics.Successful coherent control requires careful design of operating conditions for a system where decoherence is minimized. The construction of a calcium atomic beam is presented as a necessary element in experiments with laser excitation schemes chosen to provide high-fidelity preparation of a quantum satate by means of composite pulses. The second section describes my contribution to the improvement of the relative frequency stability of the Cs fountain clock CSF2 at the German institute of metrology. A modified magneto-optical trap is employed to form a beam of slow cesium atoms. They are prepared in a specific dark state and subsequently are efficiently transferred to the optical molasses of the fountain. Increasing number of atoms participating in the clock cycle in this way improves the stability of the clock by a factor of 6.The third section is concerned with spectra of metal hydride molecules NiH and FeH. Several sources for production of these molecules in laboratories were developed and tested. A differential laser absorption experiment and a cavity-enhanced spectroscopy technique are applied on the w??kly absorbing NiH molecules, to obtain absorption coefficients for the red bands of NiH. The Zeeman response of the FeH molecule (a probe for magnetic fields in cool stars) in the near-IR is investigated by precision laser spectroscopy establishing Landé factors for 33 rovibrational levels of the F 4? electronic state

Full textIt has been investigated the D1 line transitions of 39K atoms in external magnetic fields using nanocells for the cases of sigma+ and pi polarizations of laser radiation. For the first time it is demonstrated the decoupling of electronic total angular momentum J and nuclear momentum I (complete hyperfine Paschen-Back regime) in external magnetic field. For 39K the decoupling takes place at B >> 165 G. In the case of linear polarization it is shown that for B > 400 G the transmission spectrum consists of 2 groups of transitions and each group contains of one so-called "Guiding transition" (GT). The GT indicates the asymptotic value of all transitions probabilities in the group and the frequency shifts derivatives value (frequency slopes) in magnetic field. For the first time it is demonstrated the absence of cross-over resonances in the spectrum of saturated absorption. For that Rb filled micro-cell has been used with atomic vapor thickness 30-40 µm. The use of micro cell allowed the investigation of individual atomic transitions in strong external magnetic fields 30 - 6000 G ) using the saturated absorption technique. It is experimentally and theoretically manifested that at certain values of the external magnetic fields (300 - 2000 G) the probabilities of the Cs D2 line Fg=3 --> Fe=5 atomic transitions experience huge increase. These probabilities, which are forbidden at zero magnetic field, exceed the probabilities of allowed atomic transitions

Full textWe investigate the anomalous Zeeman effect for the hydrogen atom in noncommutative quantum mechanics. By using of the Bopp's shift method the nonrelativistic regime is evaluated and the noncommutative Hamiltonian is determined. By means the first order perturbation theory, the energy correction is calculated for the case of weak external magnetic field. We obtained the orbital and spin Landé factors on noncommutative space. It is shown that the experimental value for the orbital and spin Landé factors put an upper bound on the magnitude of the parameter of noncommutativity of the order of 0 . (8GeV )-2and 0 . (0; 01GeV )-2, respectively. We use the same perturbation calculation for the null external magnetic eld case, showing that some energy shift appears, modifying the ne structure spectrum. Finally, we calculate the Lamb shift and comparing the result with the experimental value from spectroscopy, we got a new bound for the noncommutative parameter, 0 . (3GeV )-2.
(3GeV )-2.

Full textThis work focuses on the study and implementation of a new technique of deceleration of a supersonic beam of paramagnetic particles using a co-moving progressive wave of magnetic field. This technique relies on a method of slowing based on Stern-Gerlach forces acting on a paramagnetic system in motion in the presence of a co-propagating magnetic field. This highly innovative approach has the advantage of being applicable to a wide range of species and opens up new opportunities. A suitable theoretical approach is followed, that allows for a direct link between theory, programming of experimental parameters, and experimental results in a systematic, rational and predictive manner. This thesis is composed of three parts. The first concerns the calculation of the various Stern Gerlach forces used in our experiments to decelerate the paramagnetic particles. Formulas established in this section are essential for the interpretation of experimental results. The second part is devoted to the experimental device: the creation of the cooled supersonic beam, interaction zone and detection. A separate chapter is devoted to the detailed description of the different setups of coils used to create the magnetic fields necessary to guide and to decelerate the particles of the beam. The third part is devoted to the experimental results and their direct interpretation using the equations of motion in Stern Gerlach forces. Simulations are presented to embody the interpretations. We present results about the deceleration of metastable argon and neon atoms. These results validate the significance of the addition of a uniform magnetic field defining a global adiabatic quantization axis for all the particles in the beam. This realizes the decoupling between the precession of the magnetic moments and Stern Gerlach forces. The results demonstrate the polarization effect of the beam that depends on the direction of the added uniform magnetic field relative to the progressive wave of the magnetic field. Finally, the understanding and control of the dynamics of trapping at a given speed, acceleration and deceleration require decoupling between the transverse and longitudinal effects of the wave. These effects are clearly visible when the added uniform magnetic field limits the transverse effects of the progressive wave of magnetic field. The outlooks for the new Zeeman Stern Gerlach decelerator are numerous. A first result of trapping di-nitrogen metastable at 560m/s is presented and the road is open to decelerate paramagnetic molecules in pulsed supersonic jet. Deceleration free radicals and neutrons are also possible

Full textUnderstanding the properties of newly discovered strongly correlated electron compounds is a considerable challenge for both fundamental matters and long-term industrial impact. Experimental activity on heavy electron metals and superconductors has lead to highlighting effects that depart from current knowledge. The thesis is aimed at modelling effects that have been observed in response to magnetic field in the heavy electron superconductor CeCoIn$_5$. This consists of two parts. In the first time we deal with the vortex lattice state anomalous local magnetic field space variations as highlighted by small angle neutron scattering and muon spin rotation experiment. On the basis of the Ginzburg-Landau theory with account of spin effect, we analyse the local field inhomogeneity in the vortex lattice and derive expressions for the neutron scattering form factors and muon spin rotation static linewidth. The anomalous experimental data are shown to be result of spin driven supercurrents which circulate around the vortex cores and lead to an increase with external field in the internal field inhomogeneity on a distance of the order of the superconducting coherence length from the vortex axis. The importance of the effect is controlled by a single quantity (the Maki parameter). The second part is on nearly commensurate spin density wave transition in a quasi two-dimensional superconductor. It is motivated by observation of the confinement of spin density wave ordering inside the superconducting state of CeCoIn$_5$ in magnetic field. In the frame of the spin-fermion formulation we propose a mechanism for the ground state transition consisting in the field-induced slowing down of a collective spin density fluctuation mode (spin-exciton) to static ordering. This represents a scenario by which the transition to spin ordering is intrinsically related to superconductivity

Full textThis work presents the development and test of an experimental set-up which allows to produce a very strong slow motion atomic beam. We discuss the calculation and construction of the solenoid to compensate the Doppler effect arising during the deceleration process, vacuum chambers, the oven which produces the atomic beam and the optical system used. We have studied the Zeeman-tuned technique to slow an atomic beam of sodium atoms. A new technique to study the deceleration which Consist in monitoring the fluorescence along the deceleration path is used, which allow us a direct observation of the process.

Full textThis thesis brings theoretical results on spectroscopy of hydrogen and gives some applications to tokamak edge plasmas. Miscellaneous line broadening models are developed and applied in three ways: diagnostic of plasma parameters, diagnostic of turbulent fluctuations of the plasma, and opacity studies. A review is first made (Chap. 1) on physical mechanisms which contribute to line broadening, such as for example motion of the emitters (Doppler effect) or electric field of the plasma (Stark effect). An analytical model is developed (Chap. 2) for opacity of Lyman a line (transition 2 → 1); this model, which takes into account Doppler effect, Zeeman effect, Stark effect and fine structure, has been incorporated into a transport code for studies of radiative transfer in ITER edge plasma. A refinement of Stark broadening description is next made (Chap. 3), in order to take into account quadratic Stark effect induced by the Zeeman degeneracy removal of atomic levels. The model is validated by a numerical simulation method. Finally, a study is presented (Chap. 4) on line broadening in presence of turbulence. It is shown how a line profile is related to the probability density function (PDF) of fluid fields; an application of formalism is then made to describe Doppler broadening of Da line (transition 3 → 2 of deuterium) and Stark broadening of D10 line (transition 10 → 2). Consequences for diagnostic interpretation are discussed

Full textIn this thesis, we describe the early stages in setting up a new experiment which aims at producing sodium Bose-Einstein condensates. The final apparatus will integrate an atomchip, enabling us to study the non-equilibrium dynamics of low-dimensional quantum gases, as well as their relaxation dynamics. The experimental setup comprises a laser system locked to an iodine rovibronic transition, and an ultra-high vacuum chamber. The latter consists of an oven producing an effusive atomic beam, which is decelerated in a Zeeman slower made with permanent magnets. We thus obtain a flux of 2 x 108 atoms/s, allowing the efficient loading of a magneto-optical trap containing up to 109 atoms. During the slower optimization, we observed a redistribution of the atomic populations from the F = 2 state to the F = 1 state before the entrance of the Zeeman slower. This depumping mechanism, induced by the interaction of the atoms with the slowing beam, has been confirmed by the numerical resolution of the optical Bloch equations describing the system. To circumvent this effect, we now prepare the atoms before the entrance of the slower in the F = 2 mF = - 2 magnetic substate with a two-frequency light beam. Finally, we designed a magnetic transport system to transfer the atoms from the magnetooptical trap chamber to the condensate chamber. Based on the results of molecular dynamics simulations, we found a performing temporal sequence to move the magnetic trap, and we intend to efficiently transport the atoms over 65 cm in about 1 s
