Abstract:
The philosophical thought of Zen Buddhism is widely used in the work of Victor Pelevin, it becomes an integral element of his early works. The most important and typical feature of Zen Buddhism is the use of "koan" to understand the philosophical thought of Zen Buddhism. The original meaning of the word "koan" is a judicial document of the ancient Chinese government. Later, the term "koan" was borrowed by Zen Buddhism, and its content is usually a story about a Zen master, a dialogue between the master and his disciples, questions and hints from the master. Zen koans are statements or stories developed in China and Japan by Zen masters in order to help students transform their conscious awareness of the world. Eight participants including 3 females and 5 males from Southern California with 1 to 30 years of experience in Zen answered open-ended questions about koan practice in one tape-recorded session for each participant. Abstract:
Zen is a way of understanding our true self as human before any concept is produced by the thinking mind. This true self can be perceived, when we let go all of forms of concepts and abstractions, and move to the realm of intuition. In this sense, intuition is direct experience of reality without the mediation of any kind of concepts or abstractions. The Zen tradition offers two ways to help people achieve this state of mind, namely Zazen (sitting meditation) and Koan (interview with the Zen Master). The awareness of the true self, or intuition, can be seen also as the state of enlightenment.

And secondly, the series is replete with structural elements and literary motifs that are a homage to core Zen teachings and reinforce the ecological themes of the work. AbstractThis paper considers genetic engineering in the context of Buddhist ethics. Rather than considering a standard set of ethical approaches, this paper instead uses the “fox koan” of Zen Buddhism to explore the dynamics and consequences of the “genetic project”. Focussing particularly on the prospect of an unbounded and unlimited dissolution of hitherto assumed boundaries, it argues that current “disembedding” of genetic information is analogous to the denial of karma as presented in the fox koan. This provides a different entry into ethical evaluation from a Buddhist perspective,

Abstract The term kōan (C. kung-an, literally “public cases”) refers to enigmatic and often shocking spiritual expressions based on dialogical encounters between masters and disciples that were used as pedagogical tools for religious training in the Zen (C. Ch’an) Buddhist tradition. This innovative practice is one of the best-known and most distinctive elements of Zen Buddhism. Originating in Tang/Sung China, the use of koans spread to Vietnam, Korea, and Japan and now attracts international attention. What is unique about the koan is the way in which it is thought to embody the enlightenment
