Abstract:
Diogenes of Babylon, or Diogenes of Seleucia (c. 240–150 BC) — a disciple of Chrysippus, a prominent representative of the last period of the Early Stoa, the head of the Stoic school after Zeno of Tarsus. In the writings of Diogenes, of which few fragments have been preserved, almost all the main and many auxiliary issues of stoic dogmatics were touched upon. Being more of a traditionalist than an innovator, Diogenes, nevertheless, specified and clarified school definitions, in some cases offered his own ones and sometimes deviated from stoic canons. He also paid attention to special topics, s

Abstract:
The Battle of Panion (or Panium; c. 200 B.C.), the decisive engagement of the 5th Syrian War, can be described as successful implementation of Combined Arms Warfare in Antiquity; different units of the Seleucid army (infantry, cavalry, war elephants) were used in concert, mutually assisting and protecting each other. Like Hannibal's famous victory at Cannae, this battle exemplifies complete encirclement and total destruction of an enemy army. Nevertheless, its reconstruction is hampered due to discrepancies in the texts of primary sources: the reports of Polybius and Zeno of Rhodes are in conf

The story of the encounter of Alexander Macedon with the Jewish nation, reported by Josephus and the Babylonian Talmud, was a favorite topic of many generations of Judaica scholars but fell in complete disrepute in the last century due to several inconsistencies. To account for some of them, Solomon Zeitlin (1924) suggested that the Greek king of the encounter was King Antiochus III, not Alexander, however his idea did not receive the recognition it deserves. Here I enrich Zeitlin’s idea with several new insights. As Antiochus was accompanied by a historian of note, Z

Abstract:
Zeno of Elea challenged pluralism with a series of puzzles, which included his small/large paradox and his place paradox. Evidence on how these two paradoxes were interpreted by the Peripatetic Eudemus of Rhodes points to Eudemus as the source or conduit of a heterodox tradition according to which Zeno, far from being either a pluralist or a Parmenidean monist, was in fact a nihilist. Working out how this interpretation was extracted, or corroborated, by a selective use of Zeno’s own text provides new clues to the precise content of that text, and thereby to Zeno’s own dialectical strategy.
