Abstract:
After an introduction into the history of the research, this article reviews commentaries and studies written in the 1980s on Ezra-Nehemiah and Chronicles, focusing on 1 Esdras. It reviews the contributions dealing with 1 Esdras that were written in the 1990s, then offers some remarks on Qumran research and Ezra Studies. This article presents the author's perspective: that the author of the Vorlage of 1 Esdras compiled the story using 2 Chronicles 35-37, Ezra-Nehemiah, and 2 Kings 22 and its paral lels. The author of 1 Esdras inserted the Three Youths Story, reorganized the letters, added Nehemiah 8, and presented the authorial perspective in 1 Esd. 1.21-22, offering an alternative to the biblical Ezra-Nehemiah story.

Abstract:
AbstractFor Josephus 3 Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther are the main sources for the history of the Persian era. His description of the final phase of the Persian domination focuses on three major incidents: the fratricide in the temple and the intervention of Bagoses; the foundation of the Gerizim Temple, which originated in an inner-Judean conflict and Alexander's visit of Jerusalem. This material, as well as the account of the transition of the empire to the Macedonians, is structured on the basis of historical knowledge of the Persian period derived from Greek sources. The major themes of Josephus' account are: (1) a close political and religious relationship with the Persian kings; (2) conflicts with the surrounding nations (most prominently with the Samaritans), while maintaining a strong loyalty to the Persians; and (3) united political actions of the Judeans under the leadership of figures like Zerubbabel, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Mordecai. Only in the last phase of Persian rule does this unity break down. In many respects the epoch is a prototype of the behavior of Judeans and Jews in relation to the dominant world power in later periods.

Abstract:
The Message of book of Haggai Abstract of Diploma thesis This Diploma thesis deals with message of book of Haggai, uses two original Sources: hebrew text (Tanak) and Greek text (Septuagint). Each of the original text is translated into czech in the context of exegesis research. Both exegeses are constructed verse by verse. This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter one focuses on the message of book of Haggai in Tanach, chapter two in Septuagint. Chapter three compares results of both exegeses. The last chapter of this thesis tracks the history of interpretations, i. e. results of selected interpreters: Jan Calvin and others from 19th, 20th and 21st century in the Europe and the USA. Commentaries of book of Haggai do not reflect everything, Author of this thesis reacts on it in last chapter (on the basis of both exegeses). This is the benefit of this thesis. God's message to his people is the most important message of book of Haggai. Most theologians of the Old Testament claim, that God's intention was new Temple in Jerusalem (i.e. Second Temple). The results of this Diploma thesis coincide with the results of Czech theologian Jiří Beneš (2006): God's word about the Temple is the metaphor, the Temple is God's people. God's intention is repented of the heart. The message of book of Haggai coincide...

Abstract:
From as far back as we have texts about messiahs, many such texts attest a preoccupation with the ancestry of the messiah whereas others, conspicuously, do not. Beginning from this observation, this chapter examines the rhetoric of ancestry and of merit in ancient messiah texts about Zerubbabel ben Shealtiel, the Hasmoneans, Herod the Great, Jesus of Nazareth, Shimon bar Kosiba, and the rabbinic patriarch and exilarch. It argues that, because of the tension built into the biblical legend of the rise of David (and, mutatis mutandis, of the priests Melchizedek, Aaron, and Phinehas), all subsequent messiah language inherited and had to reckon with the twin ideological poles of ancestry and merit, rightful succession and divine inspiration. In actual practice, each messiah text navigates these poles in creative ways that suit its own rhetorical ends.
