Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay focuses on Bruno Zevi’s working period immediately after Second World War, coming back to Italy after his stay in London and in the USA. He starts right away his impressive attempt of popularizing contemporary architecture through “Metron”, the first magazine to be printed in Italy after the war, from 1945 to 1954. In this crucial phase he founded the APAO (Association for Organic Architecture), he contributed to the editing of the Manuale dell'Architetto (an handbook with all the new construction and ready-assembly techniques), he published Verso un'architettura organica (1945), Saper vedere l'architettura (1948) and Storia dell'architettura moderna (1950), he curated the first Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit in Italy and he greatly contributed to the spreading of modern architecture and urbanism all around the country. Zevi also paying special attention to social issues, raised the question of inner spaces where man lives and where the collective theme is expressed, and stressed the need of shaping the building in the name of human use and enjoyment.

Abstract:
This study aimed to develop a model to estimate the impacts of zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) adoption on CO2 emissions and to evaluate efficacy of ZEV deployment strategies in achieving greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction goals. We proposed a modeling scheme to represent ZEVs in four-step trip-based travel demand models. We then tested six ZEV scenarios that were a cross-combination of three ZEV ownership levels and two ZEV operating cost levels. The proposed modeling scheme and scenarios were implemented on the Maryland Statewide Transportation Model (MSTM) to analyze the impacts of different ZEV ownership and cost combinations on travel patterns and on CO2 emissions. The main findings were the following: (1) A high-ZEV ownership scenario (43.14% of households with ZEVs) could achieve about a 16% reduction in statewide carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2Eq) emissions from 2015 base year levels; and (2) CO2Eq emissions at a future year baseline (2030) (the Constrained Long-Range Plan) level dropped by approximately 11% in low-ZEV ownership scenarios, 17% in medium-ZEV ownership scenarios, and 32% in high-ZEV ownership scenarios. The high-ZEV ownership results also indicated a more balanced distribution of emissions per unit area or per vehicle mile traveled among different counties.

Abstract:
Under worldwide environmental stress, zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) are rapidly coming to market. However, it is not clear how such vehicles reduce vehicular emissions at a spatially explicit level, which is crucial for developing specific policies. This study proposed a quantitative approach to estimate the effectiveness of ZEVs in reducing emissions to support investment decisions promoting the use of ZEVs. The approach uses existing statewide travel demand and mobile emission models in an integrated framework. Scenarios are designed to measure the emissions reduction effects of ZEVs at different spatial scales (statewide, county, and roadway) and characteristics (densely and sparsely populated counties) and with various levels of market penetration and driving range limits. Results show significant spatial differentiation of the impact of ZEV deployment from county to roadway levels. Offering greater spatial detail and new insights on decision-making processes, this study described an integrated tool for identifying effective strategies for ZEV implementation.

Abstract:
- The crisis of architectural schools in Italy and the profound uncertainty running through practices and the teaching of architectural and planning disciplines has roots which date back a long time. If we re-read today some of the texts and public actions of some of the greatest Italian architects or critics of architecture such as Giovanni Michelucci, Giancarlo De Carlo, Leonardo Benevolo and Bruno Zevi, in dissent with the scientific and academic communities to which they belonged, it is hard not to grasp, with the benefit of hindsight, the lucidity of their intellectual positions and the urgency of their arguments. Four episodes are presented which allow us to return to the issue of training architects in their relationship with the professional dimension and also with society and to consider more generally the crisis of inherited models of university education, which no longer seem able to meet the challenges of today.

AbstractBetween 1965 and 1975 there was a very intense debate in Italy about the theatrical architecture, the theatre building and its urban, social and political role. It was articulated around three terms that assume three ways of relation between the theatrical building and the city: the temple, the machine and the caravan. That debate, of an unusual wealth, was completely absent from the official historiography of Italian and European architecture, despite its intensity and the importance of all its protagonists for the architectural culture of the twentieth century. Many of the most prominent architects, critics and historians intervened in this debate with unbuilt competition proposals, opinions or rigorous analysis. One of the most active was Guido Canella, with a broad career as theatre architect and a scholar of theater culture himself. He organized a design studio at the Politecnico di Milano in 1965, accompanied by lectures, panel discussions and group performances by international avant-garde artists. All this material was gathered in a publication edited by Guido Canella that inaugurated this debate, called The Theatrical System in Milan, and to which all protagonists referred at some point of their respective interventions. Abstract:
Abstract Jean-Claude Milner’s Le sage trompeur (2013), a controversial recent piece of French Spinoza literature, remains regrettably understudied in the English-speaking world. Adopting Leo Strauss’ esoteric reading method, Milner alleges that Spinoza dissimulates his genuine analysis of the causes of the persecution and survival of the Jewish people within a brief “manifesto” found at the end of the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus (TTP), Chapter 3. According to Milner, Spinoza holds that the Jewish people themselves are responsible for the hatred of the Jewish people, and that the engine of their longevity is the hatred they engender. Additionally, claims Milner, Spinoza covertly insinuates that the solution to this persistent state of hatred consists in the mass apostasy of the Jewish people under the leadership of a Sabbatai Zevi-like figure. This article presents the Milner–Spinoza controversy to the English-speaking public along with the larger context of French-language scholarship on Spinoza’s relation to Judaism. While refuting Milner’s reading of Spinoza, I simultaneously clarify relevant elements of Spinoza’s discussions of Judaism in the TTP, such as Spinoza’s examination of Jewish identity and the nature of divine election, Spinoza’s understanding of the causes of national hatred, and Spinoza’s appeals to Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, and Turkish political history.

Abstract:
Abstract According to Bruno Zevi, the Italian Memorial housed at Block 21 of the Auschwitz concentration camp is among the most significant works of contemporary architecture. Recently, it has become the focus of a political and cultural conflict that is itself worthy of study. The memorial was designed as a post-war symbol of the anti-Fascist movement. It is thus heavily influenced by the politics of the Resistance, which characterized the First Republic and influenced the Italian Constitution. However, this sort of politics is incompatible with the post-Berlin-Wall narrative that the Museum of Auschwitz on the international level, along with various Italian governments on the national level, have decided to promote in the twenty-first century. Yet the Italian Memorial is an integral part of the World Heritage UNESCO site at Auschwitz, and its removal or transfer elsewhere, besides constituting a loss for Italian cultural identity, would also vitiate and downgrade the history of Auschwitz. This study looks at the memorial in terms of the discipline of conservation, applying principles elaborated by the Vienna School (Alois Riegl and Max Dvořák) to show how new exhibitions for the pavilions threaten to transform Auschwitz from a monument and historical document into a museum-style fairground, and to reveal the political motivation behind claims of the Memorial’s contemporary irrelevance.

Abstract:
The article presents examples of the emphasised ethnical factor in works belonging to the European organ literature of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries, found in pieces written by British, Italian and Jewish composers. In case of British composers, significant were the proposals of Ralph Vaughan Williams, who primarily saw folk songs as the tool for expressing a national style. Among the composers who wrote music inspired by traditional songs or quoting them directly (which was an important novelty in the British organ literature) were: Cecil Armstrong Gibbs, Percy Whitlock, Cyril Bradley Rootham, Geoffrey Turton Shaw, Harold Carpenter Lumb Stocks, and more. The influence of national elements on Italian organ literature is not as strong but it seems justified to assume that some composers might have been influenced by the romanità myth which identified the features of the Italian nation with the ideas allegedly drawn from the traditions of ancient Rome. These composers were Giuseppe Corsi and Alfredo Casella. It is worth paying attention to the phenomenon of writing organ masses which preceded the popularisation of that myth. In this context, composers of Jewish organ music attempted to emphasise the ethnical factor in their works in the clearest, most consequent and most comprehensive ways possible. Abraham Zevi Idelsohn summed up their ideological programme, indicating that music meant for being performed in synagogues, including Jewish organ music, should be based on traditional melodies and scales, at the same time using tonal harmonic systems, which was supposed to allow for introducing prayerful atmosphere and concentration of the audience as well as understanding it properly. This group of composers included Louis Lewandowski, David Nowakowski, Arno Nadel, and others.

Abstract:
Aspectos generales.

Let's start at the very beginning: that is, at the beginning of the history of Rome. This latest volume of the Oxford Readings in Classical Studies makes a clear case for the virtue of reprinting old articles even in an age of supposedly wide digital availability. An obvious virtue here is the fact this collection includes no fewer than seven articles that have been translated into English for the first time. In making this collection, the editors hope to show the continuing lively debate on the nature of the ancient historiographical tradition. Rather than taking a particular editorial line, the collection includes scholars with differing views as to the reliability of this tradition when it comes to early Roman history. That being said, it is not surprising that scholarship that aims wholeheartedly to uphold the historicity of the traditional accounts is definitely outnumbered by studies demonstrating instead the construction of historiographical tradition(s). Nonetheless, Andrea Carandini begins the collection by arguing once more for the congruence of the archaeological evidence and the literary tradition. The articles that follow vary somewhat in approach and in degrees of scepticism – for instance, Fausto Zevi admits a historical core to stories about Demoratus and the Tarquins, whereas Michael Crawford is forthright in his rejection of historicity in the earliest list of Roman colonies. The editors have taken the helpful decision to focus rather more on ‘stories’ than individual authors and this certainly helps shape a thought-provoking collection that can be read with profit rather than just put on the shelf for future reference. In particular, the editors’ suggestion that this volume could profitably be given to students in place of a single ‘authoritative’ version of the history of early Rome, so that they can see that there are indeed different ways of ‘doing’ ancient history, is persuasive. Finally, any selection of papers is, of course, subjective but an article focusing rather more particularly on non-literary historical traditions might have rounded out the picture more fully.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTNontypeableHaemophilus influenzae(NTHI) is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen that causes upper and lower respiratory infections. Factors required for pulmonary infection by NTHI are not well understood. Previously, using high-throughput insertion tracking by deep sequencing (HITS), putative lung colonization factors were identified. Also, previous research indicates that secreted disulfide-dependent factors are important for virulence ofH. influenzae. In the present study, HITS data were compared with an informatics-based list of putative substrates of the periplasmic oxidoreductase DsbA to find and characterize secreted virulence factors. This analysis resulted in identification of the “zinc bindingessential forvirulence” (zev) locus consisting ofzevA(HI1249) andzevB(HI1248). NTHI mutants ofzevAandzevBgrew normally in rich medium but were defective for colonization in a mouse lung model. Mutants also exhibited severe growth defects in medium containing EDTA and were rescued by supplementation with zinc. Additionally, purified recombinant ZevA was found to bind to zinc with high affinity. Together, these data demonstrate thatzevABis a novel virulence factor important for zinc utilization ofH. influenzaeunder conditions where zinc is limiting. Furthermore, evidence presented here suggests that zinc limitation is likely an important mechanism for host defense against pathogens during lung infection.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper scrutinizes anxieties of national identity in Turkey through the image of Zeki Müren in three films, Beklenen Şarkı, Kırık Plak, and Son Beste. In these films the image of Zeki Müren is articulated as the ridiculous sublime. His image always tells two stories simultaneously: construction and collapse of national identity. Through an analysis of Müren's early films, the paper shows, how anxieties about the formation of Turkish citizenship and about modernity are substantiated in his image. This analysis is carried out in the following steps: I, first, explain how the films chosen here construct the feeling of we-ness and national imaginary by virtue of Classical Turkish music and the voice of Zeki Müren. I show that the image of Zeki Müren in these films tells the story of the national subject being interpellated or hailed by Turkishness and argue that Zeki Müren's image exposes the “speculary” structure of Turkishness. Examining the construction, completeness, and integrity of Turkish national identity the paper continues to explore its collapse, incompleteness, and disintegration–that is, the dimension of “beyond interpellation.” Put differently, I analyze how the feeling of we-ness collapses and explore the pleasure and torment produced through the relationship between social power and the subject. With the help of these two axes of exploration, I show how the torment as well as the pleasure of subjection, the desire to be recognized as well as the fear of not being recognized is the text of Zeki Müren's image in these films.

Abstract:

There has been important differences in gender structure, musical and socio-cultural structure in shifting from Ottoman period towards republican years with the effect of modernization. While heterosexual gender structure is strengthened with Turkish modernization, existence of both female and made soloist caused people of third gender to be forgotten both in the sense of voice and as appearance. People of third gender, forgotten due to modern life were recalled by the ‘nostalgic’ connotations of postmodernism. Zeki Müren was considered through postmodern case due to his sociological characteristic and analyzed as a postmodern subject. The study is based on the life of Zeki Müren during 1931-1996 and findings which evaluate his art and stage life as the actor of Post-republican modernization movements in Turkey and process of social and musical change and indicator intersexual postmodern compounds. Zeki Müren is an important example in tradition to become popular with his pioneering behaviors in performance stage and show elements through mass media in 1950-80 during transformation of Turkish maqam music. Zeki Müren who combines tradition with contemporary succeeded in being a phenomenon with his eclectic performance set up in his repertory, costume and stage exercises. Gender readings in which Zeki Müren is related with köçek and tavşan which are the figures of Ottoman period entertainment life characterize the postmodern case.

When the artistic life of Zeki Müren – as the subject of postmodern case- is analyzed, the element of difference comes into prominence generally. His movies, gender discourses, media relations can be regarded over the concept of irony. His appearance/image being androgenous, his gender being ambiguous, his pluralist representation with soloist, composer, film actor, poet, designer sides and homosexual identity, his eclectic structure with his repertory and costumes were related with postmodern status. Historical period evaluated in the study in which qualitative methods are applied were regarded in two main sections in artistic life of Müren, being periods of 1950-60 and 1970-80. In this sense, postmodern concepts and gender theories were referred within Zeki Müren biography prepared by using historical methodology, his stage life, costumes, repertory and movies and recounted on musical and socio-cultural basis of Turkey. Apart from written (literature study, periodical and newspaper surveys), visual (photographs which have media coverage and found in Zeki Müren Museum) and audio (published records and CD) resource inspections; interviews and repertory detections were also made in the study.

Postmodern durumun öznesi olarak Zeki Müren’in sanat yaşamı incelendiğinde genel anlamda farklılık unsuru ön plana çıkmaktadır.

Abstract:
Ibrahim Zeki Burdurlu and Arif Nihat Asya, who worked as teachers in Cyprus, expressed their impressions of Cyprus and shared the problems faced by the Turkish Cypriots. Ibrahim Zeki Burdurlu has a very soft expression. When history and Cyprus come together, the values of a literature teacher extending from Namık Kemal to Gazi Kemal are expressed. Arif Nihat Asya was a teacher in Cyprus and wrote poems similar to that of İbrahim Zeki Burdurlu. Probably the indifference of the measure and the occasional immeasurability, which are among the elements of Burdurlu's poetry, have aroused influence in Turkish Cypriot poetry. In the meantime, although the understanding of populist poetry nurtured the understanding of easy-to-write poetry, it was effective in Burdurlu's poems. In this study, Cyprus, Ibrahim Zeki Burdurlu and Arif Nihat Asya's poems in post-Republic Turkish poetry will be examined comparatively with example poems by completing them especially in terms of using language. Abstract:
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCVs) are zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and their widespread adoption may help to mitigate some of the issues arising from fossil-fuel usage in the transportation sector. Only in recent years have these vehicles become available for purchase or lease in the United States, and only within the State of California. In 2018, nearly 5,500 HFCVs had been sold or leased in California, supported by a developing refueling infrastructure there. This population represents a unique opportunity, as previous studies on HFCV adoption have largely employed hypothetical stated preference surveys distributed to likely adopters. Seeking to investigate the real experiences of actual adopters from their own perspectives, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 early adopters of HFCVs in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Thematic content analysis of these interviews was conducted to identify the prevalence of factors deductively derived from published literature. All respondents considered lifetime cost of vehicle ownership, engaged in comparison shopping, and assessed the adequacy of the refueling infrastructure by various geographical criteria. Environmental concerns motivated many respondents to pursue HFCV adoption, though only if it made financial sense. Respondents chose HFCVs over battery electric vehicles after consideration of range, refueling time, and cost. Early HFCV adopters consistently cast their adoption of the technology as a contribution to a diverse ZEV marketplace. Strategies for the promotion of HFCV technology must account for this range of variation in early-adopter motivations, concerns, and behaviors which might complicate targeted HFCV promotion strategies.

Abstract:
X-ray diffraction quantitative phase analysis is a technique widely used in materials science and engineering research. The method proposed by Zevin [L. S. Zevin, J. Appl. Cryst. 10, 147 (1977)] has proven very useful in practice because standards or pure crystalline phases are not needed, but, Zevin only described the case ofnsamples, each of which contain different concentrations of the samenphases. An extension of this method, in which the reference samples could contain less phases than the analyzed sample is proposed in this paper. The absence of phases in reference samples is not arbitrary but depends on certain conditions. The conditions required to solve the equations are discussed in detail using the concepts of the set theory, and the results of confirmation experiments agree well with the theory.

Abstract:
Drawing on more than twenty years of research and long-term in-depth field experience in the Neotropics, this article argues for an indigenous methodology for predicting the arrival of hurricanes in the Caribbean. The archaeological site under study is Anse à la Gourde on Guadeloupe (French West Indies), here discussed in conjunction with a theoretical underpinning in Indigenous Amazonian cosmologies and ethnoastronomy. The conceptualisation for this study goes back to an experience that the author had during archaeological field school in 1995, and it is through a paradigm-shifting "dwelling perspective" that the author has been able to make sense of his original perceptions. During the further development of this innovative hypothesis on hurricane prediction by the Indigenous Peoples of the Caribbean prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus emerged an alternative hypothesis for a momentous dividing moment in Caribbean archaeology, namely the end of the Saladoid around AD 800.

Abstract:
This article encourages a reevaluation of the role of Anatolian Muslim merchants and notability in the Turkish nationalist movement after World War I. It offers the political career of Gümüşhane merchant Kadirbeyoğlu Zeki Bey (1884–1952) as one step toward such a reevaluation. Zeki is known to historians of Turkey for his seemingly unusual opposition: For a time, he was the only independent member of parliament under the Turkish single-party regime. Zeki was also one of the few outspoken opponents in parliament of abolishing the caliphate. But an examination of the reasons for Zeki’s persistent opposition shows that his background and platform were far from unique. This article first pinpoints the origins of Zeki’s political mobilization in the polarized environment of post-World-War-I Anatolia and explains his initial success in the Turkish nationalist movement. It then charts Zeki’s step-by-step alienation from this movement, from the Erzurum Congress to the last Ottoman parliament. Finally, it details Zeki’s “last hurrah”, the second Turkish parliament, where he championed causes dear to Anatolian Muslim merchants and notability: economic liberalism, social conservatism, civilian rule, and anti-authoritarianism. Zeki owed his initial success to his partisan neutrality and ties to the Ottoman social system, but the quickly changing dynamics of the Turkish nationalist movement soon made his opposition, and that of nationalists with a similar background, untenable.
