Abstract:

The Muslim Calendar spread into China in 1385 where it was immediately translated into Chinese by the astronomer Yuan Tong and came into use. In 1477, it was further translated by the astronomer Bei Lin and compiled into the “Qi Zheng Tui Bu”, a work more or less the same in substance with the Muslim Calendar recorded in the “Ming Shi Li Zhi”, both being works of the same source. They left for us the valuable data of the results of research of ancient Arabian astronomers. On different occasions in the Muslim Calendar, values different with one another are used for the same kind of data. In that case, which of them are used for them are accurate values surveyed and calculated by people who originally worked out the Muslim Calendar? And how are these values calculated from data now available?

Abstract:
Abstract Seventeenth-century Chinese compendia depicting martial arts and ritual dance belonged to the disciplines of “statecraft” and “concrete studies” popular among literati supporting the Ming-dynasty (1368–1644) government. This article explores moving bodies in two such texts held by the East Asian Library of Princeton University Library, Mao Yuanyi’s 茅元儀 (1594–1640) Treatise on Military Preparedness (Wu bei zhi 武備志, 1621) and Zhu Zaiyu’s 朱載堉 (1536–1611) Complete Work on Music (Yuelü quanshu 樂律全書, between 1596–1620). Drawing on historians of reading practices, this article argues that these books encode martial arts and dance as techniques of Ming statecraft. Explanatory text historicizes images of human bodies whose movement is evoked as pages are turned. This act of ordering depends on the technology of the foliated codex, which also allows the disruption of this order in later editions.

Abstract:
Topical traditional Chinese medicine- (TTCM-) related contact dermatitis is not uncommon but ignored. Patch and photopatch tests using 6 individual herbal ingredients and Bai-Zhi-Kao (BZK;白芷膏), a skin-lightening TTCM preparation, were conducted on 30 participants. Twenty-five subjects showed at least 1 positive reaction, including 6 (20.0%) participants who reacted to BZK. The majority reacted to RadixAmpelopsis japonica(Bai-Lian;白蘞) (60.0%), whereas few reacted to Rhizoma Bletilla striata (Bai-Ji;白芨) (16.7%), RhizomaAtractylodis macrocephalae(Bai-Zhu;白朮) (10.0%), RadixAngelicae dahuricae(Bai-Zhi;白芷) (3.3%), and Herba asari (Xi-Xin;細辛) (3.3%). In the photopatch test, 3 participants (10.0%) reacted positively to BZK and 10 to ≥1 constituent; however, all reacted to RadixAngelicae dahuricae(26.7%), RadixAmpelopsis japonica(13.3%), and Rhizoma Bletilla striata (3.3%). In contrast, no subjects showed positive reactions to Sclerotium Poria cocos (Bai-Fu-Ling;白茯苓). Thus, BZK and its constituents might present potential latent risk of contact dermatitis owing to the possible presence of RadixAmpelopsis japonicaand RadixAngelicae dahuricae. Furthermore, TTCMs, particularly cosmetic products, must be used carefully, with ample warning of potential contact dermatitis risk.

Abstract:
The present study was to evaluate the effects of Huang Bai, Zhi Mu, Mai Ya, and Xia Ku Cao on hormone using the GT1–7 and GH3 cells. The GT1–7 and GH3 cell lines were incubated with DW; DMSO; and 30, 100, or 300 μg/mL of one of the four extract solutions in serum-free media for 24 hours. The MTT assay was performed to determine the cytotoxicity of the four herbs. The GT1–7 and GH3 cells were incubated in DW, estradiol (GT1–7 only), or noncytotoxic herb solutions in serum-free medium for 24 hours. A quantitative RT-PCR and western blot were performed to measure the GnRH expression in GT1–7 cells and GH expression in GH3 cells. Huang Bai, Zhi Mu, Xia Ku Cao, and Mai Ya inhibited the GnRH mRNA expression in GT1–7 cells, whereas Huang Bai enhanced GH mRNA expression in GH3 cells. Additionally, Xia Ku Cao inhibited GnRH protein expression in GT1–7 cells and Huang Bai promoted GH protein expression in GH3 cells. The findings suggest that Huang Bai can delay puberty by inhibiting GnRH synthesis in the hypothalamus while also accelerating growth by promoting GH synthesis and secretion in the pituitary.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper examines a non-canonical passive construction in Chinese. In this construction, the passive marker bei can proceed a constituent including intransitive verbs, adjectives and nouns, in such expressions as bei zisha/‘commit suicide,’ bei xingfu/‘happy’ or bei gaotie/‘high speed train.’ Following Mental Space Theory (Fauconnier 1994, 1997), this paper argues that the construction serves as a space builder, which prompts conceptualizers to build a counterfactual space to hold the event conveyed by the constituent but deny the event or its associated assumption in the base space. The Mental Space operations produce the interpretations of the construction featured by ambiguity and irony. This study demonstrates the existence of dedicated counterfactual constructions in Chinese. It showcases an attempt to posit cognitive operations as the constructional function and outlines a cognitively plausible procedure to derive specific interpretations of the construction in the context.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate caregiver burden based on Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and depression in caregivers on the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). METHODS: Literate individuals, 18 years or older, who spoke Spanish as their native language were included. Demographic characteristics: Age, sex, education, relationship to person with dementia, length of time caregiving, other sources of help for caring, impact on the household economy, family support, and perception of impaired health; and Clinical data on care-recipients: type of dementia, time since diagnosis, treatment, and Global Deterioration Scale (GDS); the ZBI and BDI-II. Descriptive and analytical statistics were employed to assess caregiver burden and predictors of higher burden in caregivers. RESULTS: A total of 92 informal caregivers were evaluated. Regarding care-recipients, 75% were 69 years old or over, 75% had at least one year since diagnosis, 73.9% had Alzheimer's disease, 84.8% received treatment, 75% scored 5 or over on the GDS. For caregivers, 75% were 55.5 years old or over, predominantly female (81.5%), married (83.7%), the spouse of care-recipients (60.87%), had at least 10 years of education (75.0%) and one year of caregiving (75%), reduced entertainment time (90.2%) and self-perception of impaired health (83.7%). Median score on the ZBI was 37.5 (minimum value = 3; and maximum value = 74). The coefficient of BDI was 1.38 (p-value <0.001). CONCLUSION: This sample of Peruvian informal caregivers showed elevated ZBI values. Self-perception of worsened health, repercussion on the family economy and time caregiving were the main determinants of ZBI, although only BDI was a consistent predictor of ZBI.

"Non-mainstream intellectual phenomenon in the mid-Tang period : characteristics of Dan Zhu's (724-770) Chun qiu study and related social background = Zhong Tang ru xue si xiang de yi cai : Dan Zhu (724-770) zhi "Chun qiu" de te dian ji qi xiang guan she hui bei jing." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/197550.

Full text
Abstract:
The intellectual development in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) could be generally divided into two phases, with the first one inherited from the Han Wei period focusing on the meaning of words, while the second phase focuses on the teaching of the Confucian classics. Among the various scholars during the course of this transformation, Dan Zhu (啖助,724-770) has been recognized as a non-mainstream but yet very influential character. To avoid the An-Shi Rebellion, Dan Zhu resided in the south-eastern part of the country where he taught Lu Chun (陸淳) the Chun Qiu (春秋) classic. Many famous Tang political reformers including Lu Wen (呂溫) and Liu Zong Yuan (柳宗元) are considered by historians as Dan Zhu’s students and followers. This has made Dan Zhu even more influential than other Confucius scholars in that period. Nevertheless, due to the controversial nature of his teachings, Dan Zhu was heavily criticized by Ouyang Xiu (歐陽修) as being specious and at the same time appraised by Cheng Yi (程頤) to be one of the fore-runners who founded the Song Confucianism. This research reveals that Dan Zhu abandons the approach of focusing on the meaning wording and goes directly into the teachings of the classics. He considers that there are large amount of mistakes in the then contemporary explanation of Chun Qiu, he also considers that Tang scholars have not just worked in isolation without much view sharing, but also misinterpreted Confucius’ teachings. Moreover, the Tang scholars are treating Chun Qiu as history or even as literature, rather than Confucius’ teaching on how the society should be run. From Dan Zhu’s perspective, Confucius was trying to make use of histories to set proper behavioural standards and protocols for running the country, with an objective of saving the imperial control of Zhou (周). During the mid-Tang period, China was undergoing major social changes from a feudal to a modern society. Tang imperials whose ancestors carried a nomadic blood stream tried to strengthen their control by adopting Confucianism; and placing more emphasis on the south-eastern region where the Han Chinese of the Southern Dynasty was concentrated. Coupling with the civil examination (科舉) reform and the impacts of Zen Buddhism, the Tang society was undergoing major social-political transformation which Dan Zhu was situated right on its course. The research concludes that Dan Zhu’s ideas fit well with Xuan-zong’s (唐玄宗) appeal for revival of Confucius teachings and the social-political setting in Mid-Tang. Although Dan Zhu is considered a non-mainstream scholar, his teachings have brought about significant impacts on later development of the Neo-Confucianism. Nonetheless, Dan Zhu has not deviated from the fundamental principles of a Confucian whose destiny is to serve the people and the country, and of course for Dan Zhu, the Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:
The Sixteen Kingdoms was a period of political disintegration in medieval China. Foreign rulers of Wu Hu (“Five Barbarian Tribes”) captured the northern China during the 3rd – 5th centuries and established independent states through continuous military actions. This thesis aims at studying the relationship between the emperors and Buddhist monks in the Northwest empires in the Sixteen Kingdoms Period, including the Former Liang (320-376), the Western Qin (385-400; 409-431), the Later Liang (386-403), the Northern Liang (397-439) and the Xia (407-431), by developing a theoretical model called “Hourglass Model”. The model provides a holistic framework for investigating not only the emperors’ changing attitudes towards Buddhism but also the dissemination of the Dharma by monks. In addition, the concept of “data visualization” is implemented to re-interpret various historical sources. The complex interaction among imperial clans and Buddhist practitioners is further analyzed with computer-aided historical research methods. This thesis hopes to reveal the inspiring nature of the political religion in China’s early medieval age and expand the scope of Chinese Studies by rethinking about foreign rulers and Buddhist monks’ roles in reshaping and vitalizing the Chinese civilization. Moreover, this study develops alternative approaches to the research on the history of Chinese Buddhism, and attempts to shed new lights on theories and research methodology.

Hong Kong-Zhu hai-Macao Bridge, connecting world famous tri-cities in China, will consists of three different construction elements: a man made peninsula, a world’s longest and widest immersed tunnel and a cross-sea bridge. The key point of this megastructure is the construction of the immersed tube tunnel construction. The accuracy of tunnel element positioning directly determines the quality of tunnel construction. In order to study the behavior of elements during its lowering to the sea bed, the scaled model test has carried out in the Key Laboratory of High-speed Ship Engineering of Ministry of Education, Wuhan, China. Experiment was carried out to investigate the motion responses of the tunnel element in the immersion under wave and current actions and the tensions acting on the controlling cables of its immersing system. A concise description of the model wave-current test is carried out, and the variation of motion responses of the tunnel element and cable tensions against wave, current and immersing depth were obtained, which could be a guidance to the construction of the immersed tunnel of Hong Kong-Zhu hai-Macao Bridge.
