Abstract:
The Sixteen Kingdoms was a period of political disintegration in medieval China. Foreign rulers of Wu Hu (“Five Barbarian Tribes”) captured the northern China during the 3rd – 5th centuries and established independent states through continuous military actions. This thesis aims at studying the relationship between the emperors and Buddhist monks in the Northwest empires in the Sixteen Kingdoms Period, including the Former Liang (320-376), the Western Qin (385-400; 409-431), the Later Liang (386-403), the Northern Liang (397-439) and the Xia (407-431), by developing a theoretical model called “Hourglass Model”. The model provides a holistic framework for investigating not only the emperors’ changing attitudes towards Buddhism but also the dissemination of the Dharma by monks. In addition, the concept of “data visualization” is implemented to re-interpret various historical sources. The complex interaction among imperial clans and Buddhist practitioners is further analyzed with computer-aided historical research methods. This thesis hopes to reveal the inspiring nature of the political religion in China’s early medieval age and expand the scope of Chinese Studies by rethinking about foreign rulers and Buddhist monks’ roles in reshaping and vitalizing the Chinese civilization. Moreover, this study develops alternative approaches to the research on the history of Chinese Buddhism, and attempts to shed new lights on theories and research methodology.
published_or_final_version
Chinese
Master
Master of Philosophy

Abstract:
The intellectual development in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) could be generally divided into two phases, with the first one inherited from the Han Wei period focusing on the meaning of words, while the second phase focuses on the teaching of the Confucian classics. Among the various scholars during the course of this transformation, Dan Zhu (啖助,724-770) has been recognized as a non-mainstream but yet very influential character. To avoid the An-Shi Rebellion, Dan Zhu resided in the south-eastern part of the country where he taught Lu Chun (陸淳) the Chun Qiu (春秋) classic. Many famous Tang political reformers including Lu Wen (呂溫) and Liu Zong Yuan (柳宗元) are considered by historians as Dan Zhu’s students and followers. This has made Dan Zhu even more influential than other Confucius scholars in that period. Nevertheless, due to the controversial nature of his teachings, Dan Zhu was heavily criticized by Ouyang Xiu (歐陽修) as being specious and at the same time appraised by Cheng Yi (程頤) to be one of the fore-runners who founded the Song Confucianism. This research reveals that Dan Zhu abandons the approach of focusing on the meaning wording and goes directly into the teachings of the classics. He considers that there are large amount of mistakes in the then contemporary explanation of Chun Qiu, he also considers that Tang scholars have not just worked in isolation without much view sharing, but also misinterpreted Confucius’ teachings. Moreover, the Tang scholars are treating Chun Qiu as history or even as literature, rather than Confucius’ teaching on how the society should be run. From Dan Zhu’s perspective, Confucius was trying to make use of histories to set proper behavioural standards and protocols for running the country, with an objective of saving the imperial control of Zhou (周). During the mid-Tang period, China was undergoing major social changes from a feudal to a modern society. Tang imperials whose ancestors carried a nomadic blood stream tried to strengthen their control by adopting Confucianism; and placing more emphasis on the south-eastern region where the Han Chinese of the Southern Dynasty was concentrated. Coupling with the civil examination (科舉) reform and the impacts of Zen Buddhism, the Tang society was undergoing major social-political transformation which Dan Zhu was situated right on its course. The research concludes that Dan Zhu’s ideas fit well with Xuan-zong’s (唐玄宗) appeal for revival of Confucius teachings and the social-political setting in Mid-Tang. Although Dan Zhu is considered a non-mainstream scholar, his teachings have brought about significant impacts on later development of the Neo-Confucianism. Nonetheless, Dan Zhu has not deviated from the fundamental principles of a Confucian whose destiny is to serve the people and the country, and of course for Dan Zhu, the Tang Dynasty.
published_or_final_version
Chinese
Master
Master of Philosophy

Abstract:
Aristotle stated in his Poetics that theatre's dual purpose was to educate and entertain. Centuries later the Roman Horace and Indian Bharata echoed his same sentiments. I intend to realize all three theorist's ideas on the theatre by creating an original educational and entertaining work and bringing it to performance. The audience will retain information without being aware of learning if it is presented in a pleasurable way. The most important geopolitical relationship of this century will be between China and America. In order to educate the American public about the culture of The Middle Kingdom, I propose to write and direct my own play, condensing all three thousand years of Chinese literature into a one hundred and ten minute performance. I will benefit from the personal nature of this thesis by experiencing every stage of a play's production: from idea to page to performance. My thesis will be made of three major parts: conceiving and writing the play, a journal of directing the debut production, and a third section made of choices, influences, and reflection on the entire experience. In this manner, the ideas swirling in my head may be made clear to others reading this thesis. The play itself will be a comical distillation of ten selected works of Chinese literature. Four non-gender specific American actors will seem to make up the show as it performs in a tongue-in-cheek way. Taking my stated goal of entertaining and educating the audience to heart, the overarching plot of the play will center on the four actors teaching the audience about the literature and culture of China by acting out scenes and telling stories. The information in the scenes will be targeted to a normal American citizen's educational level with liberal doses of humor added. The four actors will be playing fictionalized versions of themselves and at times breaking character by explaining and setting up the theatricality of the piece to the audience. Part of the fun of the show will be seeing how these actors explain a subject as obtuse as Chinese literature to Americans. Perhaps a cooking metaphor is the best way to think of the play: I will chop up raw Chinese literature, the actors will boil it onstage, the theatregoer will consume the mix, and exit the theatre full of entertaining intellectual nourishment. My experiences directing and producing the finished play will be recorded in a journal as a resource for future directors. I imagine directing the play will be the most challenging aspect of this thesis. How is the play changed when other people interact with it? How will the audience receive it? In addition, Committee Chair Mark Routhier and my thesis Committee Members, Mark Brotherton and Tan Huaixiang, will also give written responses to the play's performances. The play will be performed October 10-13, 2013 in the University of Central Florida's Performing Arts Complex Studio 2 classroom. In the final section I will write a reflection on the entire process. This will serve the dual purpose of giving me a place to collect my thoughts and giving others a special insight to the growth they might experience when producing this play. Foremost among my influences in writing a play with this subject matter are the style and tone of The Reduced Shakespeare Company.
M.A.
Masters
Theatre
Arts and Humanities
Theatre

Abstract:
Since the antiquity, the Book of Change (Zhouyi 周易) has been praised as the leading scripture among the five classics (with the Book of Documents [Shangshu 尚書], the Book of Odes [Shijing 詩經], the Spring and Autumn Annals [Chunqiu 春秋], and the Book of Rites [Liji 禮記]), and the supreme dao of the three mysteries (with Laozi 老子 and Zhuangzi 莊子). However, its guayaoci 卦爻辭 (general and line judgments of the hexagrams) are not only recondite but also proliferate with conflicting exegeses that lead nowhere. Fortunately, multiple early manuscripts of the Book of Change, including those from the Mawangdui 馬王堆 silk texts, the Fuyang 阜陽 bamboo slips, and the Chu 楚 bamboo slips housed at the Shanghai Museum, were excavated over the past forty years. These, combined with other related archaeological findings, found the basis for a scrupulous reading of the guayaoci. I attempt to compare the Shanghai Museum manuscript, which is the earliest extant copy of the Book of Change, with the traditional editions and other excavated copies to arrive at a reasoned exposition based on previous interpretation and through manifold research methods such as philology, textual criticism and theosophy. The present thesis examines seven guyaoci from seven hexagrams: 1 “li yong qin fa 利用侵伐” of the fifth line of qian 謙; 2 “bu fu yi qi lin 不富以其鄰” of the fifth line of qian 謙 and the fourth line of tai 泰, and “fu yi qi lin 富以其鄰” of the fifth line of xiaochu 小畜; 3 the naming of wuwang 无妄 and its meaning; 4 “wuwang zhi ji, wu yao you xi 无妄之疾,勿藥有喜” of the fifth line of wuwang 无妄; 5 “he tian zhi qu 何天之衢” of the sixth line of dachu 大畜; 6 “lu suosuo, si qi suo qu zai 旅瑣瑣,斯其所取災” of the first line of lu 旅; and finally 7 “ru you yiru 繻有衣袽” of the fourth line of jiji 既濟.
published_or_final_version
Chinese
Doctoral
Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract:

98
The academic thoughts are very diversiform in the late of Ming Dynasty. TAI-JHOU Theory develops from YANG-MING Theory, but it’s disputed for Zen Buddhism and Confucianism reciprocal explanation. ZHI-DAO GUAN is one of the representations. His thought integrates with Zen Buddhism and Confucianism, and He is more important Buddhism practitioner in the late of Ming Dynasty. He seriously obeys Confucianism behavior, and He advocate the theory of Zen Buddhism and Confucianism are not beyond. Abstract:
碩士
南華大學
哲學與生命教育學系
101
Warning Verses of Pu-Hsien Bodhisattva: “The day goes by so the life is shortened …”. The Buddhist cultivators’ daily Evening Chanting echoes individual’s clinical experience in hospice care. Dying patients demonstrating with their precious lives remind us to be aware of how to do the final consummation in our limited life. Variable emotion is a deathbed subject. Death is the biggest frustration and loss of life. In the end of their lives, dying patients not only have to endure the great pain and sorrow of organ failure bodily but also the heavy emotional burden and fear of death mentally. As a companion, how to get close to the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of dying patients while looking at the decay of life, in addition to keeping company with patiently, the greatest effort is to eliminate dying patients’ fear of death by stabilizing their minds. The subject of this article is studying the possibility of applying Tientai Zhi-Guan to hospice care. By clinical practice of hospice care sorts out dying patients’ spiritual needs, and through the doctrine and practice of Tientai Zhi-Guan provides the way to spiritual care and actually help dying patients who face the life-and-death hardship to obtain possible means to physical and psychological settlement and transformation of life, and therefore freely detach from the life-and-death vexations of the visible significant physical illness and the invisible fear. Although Tientai Zhi-Guan sees Yuan-Dun (圓頓) as its final stage, it also applies gradual or indefinite diversified Zhi-Guan approaches, and it appears that learning Zhi-Guan is not only limited to religious practice but also is associated with the behavior of average person’s daily life. If Zhi-Guan approach can be adequately used to guide dying patients in hospice care and cease patients’ negative emotions, there will be considerable helps for improving the quality of life as well as transformation of mundane life. The practice of Tientai Zhi-Guan can be done through contemplation in sitting or in everyday life. Sitting practice is the training in stillness while everyday-life practice is the training in movement. Through inner insights of contemplating as is, we realize the reality of all things, cultivate the strength to settle body and mind, and get liberation and self-mastery from the fear of death. If dying patients can practice according to Tientai Zhi-Guan doctrines in their daily life, by using ‘ill’ as a media they can detach from the obstacles and hardships of dying situation through self-recognition that all things corporeal are void in essence. To sum up, this article cuts into the issues of physical and mental adjustment in daily life. Through comprehension and interpretation of Tientai Zhi-Guan sorts out practical approaches that can be applied to hospice care, actually provides the way of life transformation to dying patients during treatment process, and owing to this make them perfectly observe birth-aging-illness-death, and come to realize Buddha wisdom. In addition to having a deeper understanding of hospice care, selecting“Tientai Zhi-Guan”and “Hospice Care”as the research and discussion materials is to state the importance of Zhi-Guan approach application to hospice spiritual care. Expect self to be a competent Buddhist religious teacher accompanying to walk through the valley of shadow, letting every terminal cancer patient experience the enlightenment of Buddha dharma wisdom and feel warmth, care and love of the world even in the last part of life journey.
