Abstract:

This dissertation studies the discussions on ghosts by the Neo-Confucians of the Song Dynasty, in particular Zhu Xi and Chen Chun. According to these thinkers, Gui (the ghost) refers to the deceased and represents the fading away of Qi (materials), and it is also part of the ancestor worship. Based on the typically Neo-Confucian interpretation of Li (principles) and Qi (materials), this dissertation demonstrates how Zhu and Chen explicated the idea of “Li persist on even though Qi fade away” by an articulation of their understanding of the ghost. The thesis consists of five chapters. The introduction summarizes previous works concerning Neo-Confucians’ discussion on Gui. It also briefly explains why the idea of Li and Qi is significant to the distinction between living people and ghosts as seen by Neo-Confucian thinkers. The definition of “Neo-Confucians” is briefly explained at the beginning of the introduction. Chapter one presents how Neo-Confucians apply the Qi theory to Gui, and their idea of an appropriate worship as intimately related to Qi, yet with its rationality lying with Li of human relations. Chapter two analyzes the Neo-Confucian idea of li gui (haunting ghosts) which is differentiated from the ghost in the ancestry worship system. For Neo-Confucians, li gui fail to understand the appropriate relation between Qi and Li and try to reject the fading away of Qi after death. In Chapter three, it is examined that Zhu Xi and Chen Chun’s opinion that living people play a role in the ghosts’ haunting because of their lack of knowledge of either Qi or Li, and suggest that they become the human form of “haunting ghosts” because of such a failure in understanding. In conclusion, the thesis suggests that the right way to live out the true potentiality of human beings is to accept the limitation of Qi but try to grasp the eternal Li through the observation of the movements of Qi.<br>published_or_final_version<br>Chinese<br>Master<br>Master of Philosophy

Abstract:

The republican government in China joined the Allies and declared war on Germany on 14 August1917. Many previous researches have focused mainly on what sort of assistance the Chinese government provided during the Great War, but few involved the process of how the leadership in China reached to the decision of joining the Allies. The purpose of this thesis, therefore, is to investigate the reasons why the Chinese republican government would be willing to engage in a war involving various great powers in the world. In order to analyze the issue from both the perspectives of the republican government and the Allies, this research paper relies not only on Chinese official documents, but also on diplomatic correspondence from British and the U.S government. In addition, Chinese local newspapers, personal letters and memoirs of Chinese politicians and intellectuals are also examined so that local opinions in China would also be mentioned. In general, this research finds national interest of the republican government may not be the only explanation to China’s participation in the war, other factors such as the urgent need for China to expel German interest, invitation from the U.S government and Japan’s consent also played a vital role. The decision to declare war on Germany was not a move the Chinese republican government could make without consulting the western powers since the issue was highly sensitive and might easily inflict damage on the interest of both sides. In addition, Zhang Henshui improved the traditional novels, so that it has integrated the new face of refined and popular tastes, and the decline of period novels, infused inspiring vitality, giving new life to novels. And Zhang Henshui a large number of chapters back works to " Jin Fen Shi Jia " the most outstanding, so this paper to " Jin Fen Shi Jia　" as the main object of the survey. This paper is divided into six chapters. The first chapter "Introduction," Description " Jin Fen Shi Jia" research motivation, and explain to define the scope of study, and describe research methods. Finally, we discuss worthies of research results, and note also requires study. Chapter II, "Zhang Henshui and" Jin Fen Shi Jia "." First, the author''s life story summed up with the writing process. Then explain the " Jin Fen Shi Jia " Writing context-related work. Last discuss charms of " Jin Fen Shi Jia " writing movement, and the popular version. Chapter III, "" Jin Fen Shi Jia "theme" can be divided into the bad habit of wealthy, wealthy daughter of the real life, inconstancy of human relationships, life is change and so on four main themes. Chapter IV, "" Jin Fen Shi Jia "in the main type of portrayal of women", there is his wife type, the type of concubine, Miss types, Kunling type of characterization. Chapter V, "" Jin Fen Shi Jia "in the main male type of characterization," can be divided into the older types, young master type, M Ling type of characterization. Chapter VI, "Conclusions" summarizes the “Jin Fen Shi Jia” of the performance of the theme, explaining that " Jin Fen Shi Jia " in multiple types of characters portray the characteristics of the final paper of the present research prospects and limitations.
