Abstract:
Han Shu is our first history book which narrates the story by dynasty. It carries a lot of valuable information of the Han dynasty, both historically and literarily. However, because of the long-ago history, a lot of language, pronunciation, naming system, names of officials and places are now difficult to read and understand. Throughout the history, a number of people had analyzed Han Shu. These people have solved a lot of queries. Yang Shuda has high achievements in analyzing Han Shu. He is not only good at etymology and phonology but also analyzing parts of speech and sentence patterns. In terms of the use of materials, not only does he compare different versions of literature, but also uses inscriptions and even cultural data such as marriage and death for analysis. All these contribute to his unique analysis. The analysis of Han Shu has opened up a new field as more and more materials are excavated. Bronze, lacquer and even lute and currency are used in research. This has broadened the academic horizons and solved many mysteries. In 1983, in Hubei province, a lot of Han bamboo slips were excavated, which have provided tremendous help to our understanding of the medicine, law, mathematics and others of the Han dynasty. By the time when current books of Han analysis such as Yang Shuda’s Han Shu Kui Guan were punished, bamboo clips of Zhangjiashan were not yet unearthed. It is unable to invoke this important information, resulting in some doubtful content. I hereby try to make use of these bamboo slips to supplement previous comments, provide new research directions, or affirm previous results. This dissertation is divided to six parts. Each uses the notes of current analysts as the starting point while incorporating Zhangjiashan Han bamboo slips. My analysis is based on Yang Shuda Han Shu Kui Guan, together with the analysis of some current analysts.

From the Japanese rule of the Republic of Japan to the early years of the Republic of China, there were actually many outstanding and outstanding literati, and many unique collections of personal literary works worthy of study were left. Among them, Taiwan ''s sage Yang Zhong-Zuo has the nickname of “Chrysanthemum”. In the past, the prestigious literati in the north, often gathered in the Yangxi Villa ''s Netxi Villa to enjoy flowers, and then sang and interacted with poetry, especially Yang Zhong-Zuo ''s own Yonghe. The development of the region can not be underestimated, so that the poems in the " Wangxi Poetry Collection" are not only literary and have a historical and cultural context. The appearance of the literati interaction in the early days of the National Government''s move to Taiwan. The volume is mainly for the works of friends and birthday singers, and introduces some important friends who are closely related to their singing and poetry. The volume is mainly for his daily life. His content is self-realistic and writing style. Natural peace, and the inner meaning of chrysanthemum in early classical literature has evolved somewhat at any time. Does it affect Yang Zhong-Zuo ''s poetry about chrysanthemum? It is also possible to discuss the style of Yang Zhong-Zuo ''s works and to analyze and create the poems about chrysanthemums. Let''s see how Yang Zhong-Zuo, who is known as the chrysanthemum, describes the characteristics of chrysanthemums and whether their poems can enrich or certify the diversity of classical literature. Analyze and explore its title of chrysanthemum and its writing style. According to the classification of Yang Zhongzuo''s works, he wrote poetry and affection, language features, etc., and used various poems to analyze and appreciate it. He presented his overall poems and summarized his works style. Chapter VI "Conclusions" summarizes the full text and comments on the historical position and influence of Yang Zhongzuo''s sages in Taiwan and the literary value of poetry.

This dissertation aims to illustrate the history that Wang Yang-Ming School in Yue-Zhong area gradually accepted and then absorbed Buddhist philosophy, thereby changing its religious attitude and practice. Historically, the tradition of Wang Yang-Ming School in Yue-Zhong area was first established by Wang Yang-Ming and his disciple Wang Ji, and then it was inherited and further elaborated by Zhou Ru-Deng, Tao Wang-Ling and Tao Shi-Ling. In order to avoid the misunderstanding resulted from the problematic arrangement that Zhou and Tao brothers were placed by Huang Zong-Xi in Tai-Zhou School of Ming Ru Xue An, this study attempts to clarify the historical context of the academia in Yue-Zhong area, in which Zhou and Tao brothers played a significant role. In addition, Yue-Zhong was an area where the revival of late Ming Buddhism took place, which facilitated frequent interactions between scholars of Wang Yang-Ming School and Buddhist monks and also the practice of both Confucianism and Buddhism at the same time. Philosophically, since Zhou and Tao brothers continued to elaborate the doctrine of neither good nor evil, the focus of Wang Yang-Ming School overlapped with Zen Buddhism’s, blurring the distinction between Confucianism and Buddhism. Eventually, the evolvement of Wang Yang-Ming philosophy, therefore, made Buddhist philosophy and practice an integral part of itself. The Tao brothers, leaders of discussion gatherings in Yue-Zhong and also devoted laymen of Buddhism, whose philosophy, Buddhist faith and academic community exemplified this trend, represented the majority of scholars in Yue-Zhong area. Out of these influential figures and their discourse on Buddhism, this study attempts to reveal the transformation of religious attitude of Wang Yang-Ming School, the inclination of cultural conservatism and the meaning of multi-religious participation.

The historical events of the Warring States Period are too complicated to clarify. Using Zhu Zi’s(諸子) point of views to make things clear has become a unique way to apply. Among Zhu Zi, Jiu Liu Shi Jia(九流十家) are the most famous; however, only nine of them are worth of analyzing. Ban Gu(班固) and Zhang Xue Chen(章學 誠) has adopted the term, Zong Hen(縱橫), to conclude the development of the Warring States Peried, and, accordingly, Zhu Zi was involved broadly and deeply with the development and evolution of each country concerned. Therefore, understanding Zhu Zi’s theories is the key to discover the history. What Zhu Zi said, however, were regarded as intention of lobbying, so they were usually discarded by historians and scholars, when doing the researches. Gradually, Zhu Zi’s speeches, in conjunction with the history of those countries, have been significantly veiled. As mentioned above, the history of Warring States Period and Zhu Zi can be mutually demonstrated. When it comes to Zong Hen Jia(縱橫家), Zhang Yi(張儀) and Su Qin(蘇秦) have been deemed as the most influential in the Warring States Period, as Sima Qian said ”both are the most important figures.” However, the stories of Zhang Yi and Su Qin were mostly told by general public in that period; therefore Sima Qian said “there are different sayings related to Su Qin because different things that occurred at different times were mistakenly applied to him.” And Jing Chun(景春) asked Mong Zi(孟子) “Aren’t Gong Sun Yan(公孫衍) and Zhang Yi great people?” Zi Zhi Tong Jian(資治通鑑) mentioned that concerning the methods of Zong Hen, ”Zhang Yi, Su Qin, and Gong Sun Yan are the most famous.” Among Zhu Zi in the Warring States Period, it seems that besides Su Qin and Zhang Yi, Gong Sun Yan is famous, too. Gong Sun Yan was the political opponent against Zhang Yi, and Su Qin belonged to younger generation; but regarding Zong Hen Jia in that period, we often compare Su Qin with Zhang Yi due to some fallacies happening. Uncovering the truths among these three people is highly important to discovering the historical validity between Zong Hen Jia and the Warring States Period. Moreover, Zong Hen Jia made their fortune by high-profile speeches, debating, and sensationalism, so from the historical view, they were deemed as people too crooked to be listed in the Jiu Liu Shi Jia. Nonetheless, the hearsays of Zong Hen Jia correspond to what Gu Jie Gang said, accumulating those errors one by one in a short period and misleading. Removing those hearsays, Zhong Hen Jia has its own reasonable theories and can communicate within Zhu Zi. Its distinct theories were from the former generation and basing them on the historiographers. What Zong Hen Jia did can be regarded as the heritage of Wang Guan Xue(王官學) and hence “the contingency theory was adoptable as well in the Warring States Period, with no need to involve officials in”, said Sima Qian. Lie Zhuan(列傳) in Shi Ji(史記) could demonstrate scholarship and verify their origins. Lie Zhuan listed most of those who were Zong Hen Jia or who were skilled at handling contingency. Recognizing the reality and combing it with ideas is a functional thinking, “a condescending way leading to the right track.” Politics and scholarship are two sides of one body. “The contingency theory was adoptable as well in the Warring States Period”, sufficient to highlight the reality of the period and theories of the scholarship, and to complete the missions of era. Sima Qian can see things other people cannot see through and put the two into Lie Zhuan of Si Ji, proving that he not only was a man of wit but also exclusively put much weight on Zhong Hen Jia. Key

Since Si Ma Qian (司馬遷)created the biographies of the emperor’s male favorites (佞幸), many historians followed this style and also widely be written by intellectuals in the Ming Dynasty. In this thesis, first of all, I sorted texts about the emperor’s male favorites before Ming Dynasty. According to my research, I divided the relative texts into two parts: official dynasty history and unofficial / folk intellectuals. They could be classified into two skills: to cite from histories and refer to as something. Most intellectuals used the former way to criticize or express their opinions and a few texts referred to latter. Some males who were favored by emperors in Pre-Qin Dynasty. Therefore, “emperor’s male favorites” began to be formed as a category of official history. Secondly, I used the same way to discuss the texts in the Ming Dynasty. Compared to the past works, due to the possible reasons of social transformation and the development of man’s love trend in the middle and late Ming, most erotic fictions turned to ignore the potential political implications as well as the hierarchy system, and were used to represent sex and sexual organs by the term “Long Yang” (龍陽). They extended and enriched the connotations of “Long Yang” and I think “emperor’s male favorites” (佞幸) referred to pederasty in the Ming Dynasty. Thirdly, I focused on Pan Wen Zi Qi He Yuan Yang Zhong (潘文子契合鴛鴦塚) to discuss how did they use and rewrite “emperor’s male favorites”. The former rewrote the story of Pan Zan (潘章) by using the beautiful images of mandarin ducks and paor of lovebirds to criticize the repressions of Confucian ethical relations. The point we have to notice is the author’s contradictions in the fiction. The later rewrote Gentleman Long Yang’s story (魏與龍陽君共船而釣). Just added the finishing touches to original copy, the author warmed and embellished the story of Emperor Wei (魏) and Long Yang. Focused on the cultural phenomenon of men’s love trend and gay sex bibliographies in the Ming Dynasty, I quoted Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity to discuss the two main characters in Pan Wen Zi Qi He Yuan Yang Zhong who broke Confucian ethics relations, heterosexual principles and the men’s love trend in the Ming dynasty. In addition, Tong Wan Zheng Qi surpassed the gender roles and variant hierarchy to express a vision of unchangeable love. These two works are not only unique in the Ming Dynasty but valuable to contemporary readers.

Jirik, John Charles 1960. "Making news in the People's Republic of China: the case of CCTV-9." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/3907.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the news making process at CCTV-9, the Beijing-based global English language service of China Central Television (CCTV). My interest in this topic was triggered by the strange manner in which so much debate about media reform in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) elides any real discussion of the contribution of journalists themselves to reform, which is almost invariably treated as something that happens to media from outside of, or regardless of, what journalists do. My aim in this research was to address this lapsus and foreground the work of journalists to show how it contributes to the changing institutional framework in which their work is embedded and therefore contributes to media reform. Drawing on ground-breaking work on bounded innovation and resistance by Pan Zhongdang and Lu Ye in this emerging field, I utilize concepts derived from their use of Michel de Certeau and discuss these concepts in light of the works of Antonio Gramsci, Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault to show how journalists at CCTV-9 exercised control over their work, despite their function as mouthpieces of the news and publicity system operated by the Communist Party of China and PRC government. I am not suggesting that PRC journalists are dissidents. However, my research did suggest that the mundane practice of journalism, even in so constrained a media environment as that of the PRC news system, can alter the manner in which news is made and thereby contribute to media reform. Utilizing participant observation of the CCTV-9 newsroom in 2004-2005, interviews with a range of news makers, in-house documents and a survey of content, I construct a picture of news making at CCTV-9 that foregrounds what to more macro-oriented analyses of media reform in the PRC has remained inaccessible, the minutiae of everyday life in the newsroom, and the tiny, but not inconsequential changes brought about by the ordinary work of journalists.

Abstract:
I propose an integrative approach to address the above questions. My findings suggest that certain kinds of the organizational form were always interwoven with the social situation at the time and could not be simplistically explained in terms of efficiency alone. It was the state and the development of the market that determined the dynamics of the organizational form. In my opinion, efficiency theory, specifically the concept of asset specificity, could explain why the internal market system failed. On the other hand, power theory, specifically the phenomenon of isomorphism, could shed light on why the enterprise adopted the internal market system in 1994. The study suggests that the perspective of power has more strength to explain the social process of the organizational form framing. Furthermore, it explores the source of the internal transaction costs, which was underdeveloped in neo-institutional economic theory. It is my argument that there is a missing link between asset specificity and the internal transaction costs.
In the institutional approach, the studies of organizational forms have long been influenced by two theories: efficiency theory and power theory. The general theoretical concern of this study is: Is efficiency theory adequate to explain the internal organizational form? Which of these two theories is more appropriate to explain the internal organizational form of the state-owned enterprises in China?
The twenty-year economic reform in China has witnessed frequent changes in the titles and structures of China's economic organizations. This case study investigates the internal organizational form of a state-owned enterprise in Guangzhou, China. It depicts the history of its organizational form from 1949 to 2000. Under the planned economy, the said enterprise, The Southern Heavy Machinery Corporation, had an over-integrated organizational structure. From 1994 to 2000, the enterprise has set up a system consisting of an enterprise group corporation and dozens of subsidiary companies, moving toward a market system for its internal transactions among the production units. The subsidiary companies were set up on the basis of the earlier production plants established before 1984. As profits decreased year by year, the new general manager who started his tenure in September 2000 made the decision to bring some of its crucial subsidiary companies back into the form of production plants to render stronger continuities in production.
Why then, after 16 years of internal market practice that has begun in 1984, did the enterprise restructure itself to adopt the unitary form (U form) in some crucial production units? This study aims to explain the following questions: what was the cause of adopting the certain organizational form, why it used the internal market system and why the internal market system failed.
