Abstract:
We propose a novel family of seventh-order iterative methods for computing multiple zeros of a nonlinear function. The algorithm consists of three steps, of which the first two are the steps of recently developed Liu–Zhou fourth-order method, whereas the third step is based on a Newton-like step. The efficiency index of the proposed scheme is 1.627, which is better than the efficiency index 1.587 of the basic Liu–Zhou fourth-order method. In this sense, the proposed iteration is the modification over the Liu–Zhou iteration. Theoretical results are fully studied including the main theorem of lo

While it is generally believed that Confucius's devotion to the Zhou ritual system was, in part, a product of his background as a countryman of the traditionalist Zhou state of Lu, this study suggests that Confucius was raised in and influenced by the cultural sphere of a non-Zhou people, the region associated with the state of Zhulou, to which his mother's family belonged. Evidence from the Zuo zkuan lends support to the Shiji account of Confucius's family background, which has long been questioned. This evidence suggests that Confucius's father was a privileged associate of a leading Lu gran

This chapter accounts for the origin and lineage of the Wu royal family, which begins with the legendary Houji, the Zhou ancestor and cultural hero who, according to Chinese mythology, started agriculture. It introduces Gongliu and Gugong Danfu in the narrative as two other heroes in early Zhou history, emphasizing their kind deeds and noble characters. It also recounts how the two heroes Gongliu and Gugong Danfu are praised for being able to transform people with their virtue, which caused the people to render homage to them even though the time and environment in which they lived were difficult and hostile. The chapter explores the story of Taibo and Zhongyong, the legitimate successors of the Zhou state that continues the theme of the true ruler of yielding power and being served by people. It highlights how Taibo and Zhongyong returned to Zhou to attend their father's funeral and Taibo's explanation of the title of the state of Wu.

Abstract:
Henrik Ibsen’s work Nora in A Doll’s House was a timely and influential inspiration to Chinese writers particularly in advocating gender equality and it offered a role model for many a Chinese woman to ‘walk out’ (of household/family bounds) during an era when China looked to the West to reform its society traditionally governed by Confucian principles. ‘To choose the path of Nora’ was a public statement the female singer Zhou Xuan made in 1941 when she announced her ‘walking out’ of her marriage with the famed composer husband Yan Hua. As China’s pop diva with a ‘golden voice’ in the late 1930s and the 40s, Zhou has been credited by cultural historians and musicologists to have popularized a music trend that fused Western jazz and Chinese folk tunes. Her stardom legitimized her role as a cultured, virtuous and sympathized female singer, a profession and public image that was no longer scrutinized as it had been in the 1920s. Highlighting Zhou’s cross-media performance and her ‘walking out’ as a female public figure in this case study, this paper aims to fill the gap between the readings of music and film experts by examining Zhou’s life and career as a performer.

This chapter discusses the twenty-seven inscribed ritual bronze vessels, which were uncovered in Yangjiacun, Mei Xian. The place where these vessels were discovered may have been near the seat of the powerful Shan lineage — several names of Shan family members are inscribed on the vessels. The chapter reveals that the inscriptions on the bronze vessels provide new insights into the structure and internal organisation of lineages in the Late Western Zhou-period China. These inscriptions also convey a feeling of shared identity among the members of the Shan lineage, particularly the male members. It is also shown that they illuminate the contexts in which a sense of history was beginning to form during the final half-millennium of pre-Imperial China.

Abstract:
While Zhu Xi developed complex philosophical theories, his ultimate objective was the moral transformation of society. This chapter concerns his directives and exhortations to people in his jurisdiction, promulgated during his stints as a local official, as well as in his letters to disciples and friends addressing concrete issues in family relations, and in his funerary biographies (especially for women), where he exhibited considerable flexibility and accommodation to social custom. Zhu’s official directives include general admonishments to behave well and be diligent in agriculture, as well as specific warnings about officials cheating commoners, illegal family division, and unorthodox religious practices. Many of the texts in this chapter deal with family issues. Like his writings on society, Zhu’s writings on families were largely prescriptive: families needed to be properly “regulated” and interactions among family members guided by ritual.

‘Confucianism in practice’ shows how Confucianism was played out in everyday family life, in the moral education of peasants and elite alike, and in the administration of the state. Premodern Chinese society and politics were heavily guided by Confucian principles. Prior to the thirteenth century, civil service examination candidates were expected to demonstrate mastery of the Five Classics. In 1313, with the growing influence of the Zhu Xi school, the government decreed the Four Books would now serve as the basis of the examinations. Despite undergoing frequent change and reform, the system remained intact for nearly fifteen hundred years and was a powerful force in shaping and sustaining China's cultural and social norms.

Full text
Abstract:
As noted In Chapter 1, the general class of NARMAX models is extremely broad and includes almost all of the other discrete-time model classes discussed in this book, linear and nonlinear. Because of its enormity, little can be said about the qualitative behavior of the NARMAX family in general, but it is surprising how much can be said about the behavior of some important subclasses. In particular, there are sharp qualitative distinctions between nonlinear moving average models (NMAX models) and nonlinear autoregressive models (NARX models). Since these representations are equivalent for linear models (c.f. Chapter 2), this observation highlights one important difference between linear and nonlinear discrete-time dynamic models. Consequently, this chapter focuses primarily on the structure and qualitative behavior of various subclasses of the NARMAX family, particularly the NMAX and NARX classes. More specifically, Sec. 4.1 presents a brief discussion of the general NARMAX class, defining five important subclasses that are discussed in subsequent sections: the NMAX class (Sec. 4.2), the NARX class (Sec. 4.3), the class of (structurally) additive NARMAX models (Sec. 4.4), the class of polynomial NARMAX models (Sec. 4.5), and the class of rational NARMAX models (Sec. 4.6). More complex NARMAX models are then discussed briefly in Sec. 4.7 and Sec. 4.8 concludes the chapter with a brief summary of the NARMAX class. The general class of NARMAX models was defined and discussed in a series of papers by Billings and various co-authors (Billings and Voon, 1983, 1986a; Leontartis and Billings, 1985; Zhu and Billings, 1993) and is defined by the equation . . . y(k) = F(y(k – 1), . . . , y(k – p), u(k), . . . , u(k – q), e(k – 1), . . . , e(k – r)) + e(k). (4.1) . . . Because this book is primarily concerned with the qualitative input/output behavior of these models, it will be assumed that e(k) = 0 identically as in the class of linear ARMAX models discussed in Chapter 2.

Xiang-Ping Hu and Zhuo Zheng of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics developed (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 3226; J. Org. Chem. 2009, 74, 9191) a family of Rh catalysts for the enantioselective hydrogenation of allylic phosphonates such as 1. Hon Wai Lam of the University of Edinburgh established (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 10386) that an alkenyl heterocycle 3 could be reduced with high ee. The product 4 could be hydrolyzed to the carboxylic acid. Ken Tanaka of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 12552) that an isopropenyl amide 6 could be hydroacylated with high ee. Gregory C. Fu of MIT observed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 14231) that nitromethane 9 could be added to the allenyl amide 8 to give 10, the product of γ-bond formation. Robert K. Boeckman Jr. of the University of Rochester devised (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 4544) what appears to be a general protocol for the construction of alkylated ternary and quaternary centers: enantioselective hydroxymethylation of an aldehyde 11. In another approach to the construction of alkylated quaternary centers, Varinder K. Aggarwal of the University of Bristol demonstrated (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 6289) that an enantiomerically enriched trifluoroborate salt 14 could be added to an aromatic aldehyde 15 with retention of absolute configuration. The salt 14 was prepared from the corresponding high ee secondary benzyl alcohol. Weinreb amides are versatile precursors to a variety of functional groups. Stephen G. Davies of the University of Oxford devised (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 3254) a chiral Weinreb amide equivalent 17 that could be alkylated with high de. The minor diastereomer from the alkylation was readily separable by silica gel chromatography. Keiji Maruoka of Kyoto University established (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 5014) that a chiral phase transfer catalyst was effective for the enantioselective alkylation of the alkynyl ester 19. Emmanuel Riguet of the Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne developed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 4283) an improved catalyst for the enantioselective addition of malonate 22 to cyclohexenone 21.
