Abstract:
The authors’ aim is to reconstruct the idea of Central Europe as presented in a renowned book by Ziemowit Szczerek, Przyjdzie Mordor i nas zje, czyli tajna historia Słowian (2013; English: Mordor’s Coming To Eat Us: A Secret History of the Slavs). Szczerek’s idea is reconstructed from a variety of perspectives. Among other things, the authors analyze the tendency to prioritize states and societies within Central Europe, the attempt to locate Central Europe’s borders “somewhere between Poland and Ukraine,” and references to the Habsburg past. Additionally, they focus on the multicultural region of Transcarpathia, and on demarcating Central Europe’s eastern border by means of the emotions experienced while travelling.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is an analysis of the three books by the Polish journalist, writer, and traveler Ziemowit Szczerek: “Mordor will come and eat us” (2013), “Tattoo with Trident” (2015), and “Intermarium” (2017). Due to the presence of themes related to Poland’s eastern neighbor the author of the paper conventionally groups them as “Ukrainian trilogy”. In particular, the paper focuses on the genealogical status of Szczerek’s work, highlights the consequences of writing books about the country with a long and complex history of colonial relations with Poland, and considers an attempt to look at the Ukrainian situation from a supra-regional perspective.
 In the case of “Mordor…” the author of the present paper is interested in the still dubious genealogical status of the novel, which, apart from its purely formal role, is also important for determining the writer’s position in relation to the described country. In the collection of reportages “Tattoo with Trident”, the writer gives up the easy strategy of exoticizing Ukraine and proposes his own strategy of domestication, which consists of three principles: a) rationalizing the attitudes of the people described; b) looking for analogies between the Polish and Ukrainian situation; c) introducing autobiographical threads. “Intermarium” is a literary guide to the countries that make up the pseudo-community, because they have a national idea that separates them. The comparison of dreams concerning power in the style of “Let’s make Poland (Hungary, Slovakia, Macedonia, etc.) great again” reveals the illusiveness of such thinking and the hidden imitative character of these fantasies, just like the slogan itself. Szczerek claims that escape from the West taking place in Central Europe resembles a “run of lemmings”, which will end with either a renewed victory of Western ideas in these lands or their gradual falling into the Russian sphere of infuence.

Abstract:
Purpose. The presentation of results and analyses regarding on the journeys of ethical, cultural and social provenance in narratives available in contemporary Polish literature illustrated by chosen examples. Method. To prepare the presentation, qualitative methods were used together with the analysis technique of the content/plot of novels of autobiographies of contemporary Polish prose writers and travelers. The author analysed representative texts of such highly-regarded figures as philosophers by profession – Marek Kamiński, Joanna Bator, Krzysztof Środa – and wellknown writers: Andrzej Stasiuk, Krzysztof Varga, Ziemowit Szczerek and others. Findings. Research showed the authors’ great interest in history, culture, ethical and social issues during their numerous peregrinations all over Poland, Southern Europe and Central and Eastern Europe. The narration of the chosen author-travelers contains numerous reflections of existential-philosophical and cultural-social nature, focusing on sociological analysis. The interpretative framework in the works of the discussed authors fluctuates around local, global and glocal problems. Research and conclusions limitations. The study concerned only the works of Polish authors and concentrated on their journeys all over Poland, Southern and Central and Eastern Europe; borderlands, peripheral and cross-border areas. The phenomenon of the journeys of the analysed authors lies in the fact that their experiences are subjective, and their expeditions are undertaken to a considerable degree in mental space, a depicted world; they are unique imaginary adventures. Practical implications. Reading the works discussed in the article expands knowledge on culture, history and the society of countries where the authors undertake their ethically responsible travels. Their books can successfully become an element of literary/cultural tourism. Originality. In literature on the subject works concerning individual authors discussed in the article are dispersed. The advantage of the presented text is the depiction and analysis of the creative output of the examined authors in one place, including the characteristics of their journeys: spiritual, culinary, pilgrimage, cognitive and escape. Type of paper. The article is a review and a scientific, reflective essay.

 Celem niniejszego tekstu jest analiza trzech książek Ziemowita Szczerka: Przyjdzie Mordor i nas zje (2013), Tatuażu z tryzubem (2015) oraz Międzymorza (2017), które ze względu na obecność w nich tematów związanych ze wschodnim sąsiadem Polski autor artykułu łączy umownie w „ukraińską trylogię”. Wśród podjętych w tekście problemów badawczych znalazły się m.in.: kwestia genologicznego statusu twórczości Szczerka, pytania o implikacje, które niesie za sobą pisanie reportaży na temat kraju o wieloletniej i złożonej historii stosunków kolonialnych z krajem, z którego pochodzi sam pisarz, czy wreszcie próba spojrzenia na ukraińską sytuację z ponadregionalnej perspektywy.

Abstract:
Artykuł przedstawia pisarstwo Ziemowita Szczerka w kontekście gatunkowych kwalifikacji jako reportaż podróżniczy. Twórczość tę można odczytać jako przykłady reportażu literackiego, w związku z czym zaprezentowano kwestie sporu o referencyjność i literackość gatunku, inspiracje dzieł Szczerka nurtem gonzo journalism oraz zabiegi twórcze problematyzujące kwestię fikcjonalności w reportażu poprzez odniesienie do problematyki geografii wyobrażonej (E.W. Said), kulturowych auto- i heterostereotypów oraz relacji intertekstualnych. Prowadzi to do stwierdzenia, że reportaże literackie Szczerka, podobnie jak pisarstwo podróżnicze Andrzeja Stasiuka, zanurzone są w fikcjotwórstwie, co tylko podnosi wartość literacką tej twórczości.

Abstract:
Der Autor nimmt verschiedene Aspekte von Grenzüberschreitungen zwischen Deutschland und Polen anhand deutscher und polnischer Gegenwartsprosa in den Fokus. Am Beispiel von Sabrina Janeschs Katzenberge und Ambra, Andrzej Stasiuks Dojczland sowie Artur Beckers Wodka und Messer. Lied vom Ertrinken wird die gegenseitige Wahrnehmung auf den jeweils anderen untersucht. Theoretische Grundlagen sind die von Magdalena Marszałek und Susi K. Frank 2010 für die deutsche Slavistik vorgestellten Theorien von Geopoetik und Geokulturologie, die ab 2014 auch für die Polonistik in Polen wichtig wurden. Diese Theorien werden mit den Untersuchungen zum Unheimlichen Slaventum – Niesamowita Słowiańszczyzna – gekoppelt, die die Romantikforscherin Maria Janion 2006 vorlegte. Janion legte darin dar, dass das polnische Slaventum seltsam anmutende, weil aus paganen Ursprüngen gespeiste Formen besitzt, die insbesondere die Schriftsteller der Romantik beeinflussten und die ihre Wirksamkeit bis heute nicht eingebüßt haben. Zu Janions Ausführungen gesellt sich seit etwa einem Jahrzehnt die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem polnischen Postkolonialismus, insbesondere gegenüber den östlichen Nachbarn Polens – Litauen, Belarus und der Ukraine, der ebenfalls zum Bestandteil der Arbeit gehört. Jenen Postkolonialismus in der Gegenwartsliteratur vertritt in der Untersuchung Ziemowit Szczereks Przyjdzie Mordor i nas zje. Czyli tajna historia Słowian, an welchem sichtbar wird, dass eine Verlagerung des deutsch-polnischen Beziehungssystems auf das polnisch-ukrainische Verhältnis stattfindet. In der Gegenüberstellung deutscher und polnischer Prosatexte untersucht der Autor, wie diese Konzeptionen in diesen Texten (re-)vitalisiert werden und stellt sie kontrastiv gegenüber. Damit sollen die Untersuchungen einen Beitrag dazu leisten, fachliche Grenzgebiete zwischen den Disziplinen der Polonistik und Germanistik genauer zu erhellen und auszuloten.

Abstract:
The image of Hungary in Poland has remained positive for centuries. There is even a famous proverb: “The Pole, the Hungarian are twobrothers...”. However, this image has been changing in the last decade depending on political conditions, on the point of view of the narrator, and, occasionally, on her political views. In the 1970s and 1980s, Hungary seemed a Western country to the Poles who visited it. In modern Polish literature, the Hungarian topic is present primarily in essays. A special place in this respect is taken by the series of three books by the writer of Polish-Hungarian origin, Krzysztof Varga, who talks about Hungarian history and modernity. In the documentary essays of Andrzej Stasiuk, Hungary is usually represented as a transit country. The writer expresses, among other things, the opinion that “to the East and South of Prague and Budapest begins something like terra incognita.” Ziemowit Szczerek describes Hungary differently. He emphasises that due to the affiliation to Habsburg Empire, it belonged to the Western civilization for a long time, but years of communism made it different from modern Western standards in many aspects.
