Abstract:
Cilia and flagella are hair-like appendages of eukaryotic cells. They are actively bending structures that exhibit regular beat patterns and thereby play an important role in many different circumstances where motion on a cellular level is required. Most dramatic is the effect of nodal cilia whose vortical motion leads to a fluid flow that is directly responsible for establishing the left-right axis during embryological development in many vertebrate species, but examples range from the propulsion of single cells, such as the swimming of sperm, to the transport of mucus along epithelial cells, e.g. in the ciliated trachea. Cilia and flagella contain an evolutionary highly conserved structure called the axoneme, whose characteristic architecture is based on a cylindrical arrangement of elastic filaments (microtubules). In the presence of a chemical fuel (ATP), molecular motors (dynein) exert shear forces between neighbouring microtubules, leading to a bending of the axoneme through structural constraints. We address the following two questions: How can these organelles generate regular oscillatory beat patterns in the absence of a biochemical signal regulating the activity of the force generating elements? And how can the beat patterns be so different for apparently very similar structures? We present a theoretical description of the axonemal structure as an actively bending elastic cylinder, and show that in such a system bending waves emerge from a non-oscillatory state via a dynamic instability. The corresponding beat patterns are solutions to a set of coupled partial differential equations presented herein.

Abstract:

I represented a person’s stories and memories of childhood through the material called glass, and found a method to approach personal stories.

To do this, the medium to express my conception that is express of the personal experience and extreme situation on glass was based. The most significant point of study was realizing the nature of emotions and meanings within a person’s life. As well as special instruments and to analyze whether it is an appropriate expression.

Accordingly with this, I collected individual stories from Zili and tried to comprehensively understand the cause behind. For that I approached different cases of psychology theory to compare. After I analyzed the colour and object that relate to memories or the person. Expression of artefact I created from foundational theory through my perspective. I represented in magnification of memories as an expression on glass artefacts for respect of peoples diversity life.

This led me to make more concrete context in practical work and theoretical tool as well.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Document Design))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
This study focused on the image formation and projection of Helen Zille, leader of South Africa’s largest opposition party. South Africans are heading to voting stations in 2009 for the national and provincial election. For this reason the image a party portrays in all the methods it uses to attract voters needs to be perfect. Such methods include voting-posters, public debates and newsletters. This study focuses on the newsletters that Helen Zille writes every week and takes the form of a corpus analises. The study also shows the importance of the documentation from the leader of any institution. Such reasons include that the leader is the most identifiable person thereof. This study was undertaken within the framework of the Integrated Communication Model for Image formation and projection (IFP-model) developed by Professor Leon de Stadler. The model consists of three levels, namely the image, the information design and the document design. Each of these levels focuses on specific phases of image formation and projection. Image focuses on the intended (the desired image the institution want to construe) and the construed (the image the reader derives from the documentation) image. The information design involves the manner in which the reader accesses the text. There are three ways, which are the physical access (that which the reader sees first), the intellectual access (the way in which the information is interpreted) and the emotional access (how the reader feels about the content). The document design focuses on the four messages which appear in the text. They are the referential (the content), the appealing (the objectives), the expressive (the image of the sender) and the relational (the relationship between the reader and the sender) messages. This study focuses on the expressive and relational messages. Other questions mentioned in this study are whether the IFP-model kan be used as an analytical instrument and if this model kan be refined to place more emphasis on the expressive and relational messages. After the expressive and relational messages where identified, various tendencies where noticed in the content, style, structure and graphics thereof. These tendencies include a positive focus in the content, an informal style, high information density and the use of photographs as graphics. These tendencies where used to refine the IFP-model. The analises of the newsletters indicated that Helen Zille portrayed an image of a self-assured leader, but that this image was influenced by tendencies such as a negative focus on the ANC. Further findings showed that the IFPmodel can be used as an analytical instrument, but that more emphasis should be placed on refining the model so that it includes various aspects of the different levels, such as the different ways a reader gains access in the information design. This study also introduced a refined model which can be used to analyze the expressive and relation messages.

Modubu, Tshegofatso. "An analysis of the coverage of Helen Zille and Patricia De Lille prior to, during and after South Africa's national elections by South African English newspapers." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/78654.

Full text
Abstract:
Feminist media studies theory and intersectionality were used to determine if South African national English daily, weekly and weekend newspapers perpetuated stereotypes when reporting about Helen Zille and Patricia De Lille, both of whom were female political candidates during the 2009 national election. The study explores the nexus between media, gender, race and class representation and political election campaign reporting. In particular, it seeks to find out if the different gender, race and class of two female candidates influenced national newspaper reporters; in either reporting negatively or positively about them as candidates during the elections. Content analysis and critical discourse analysis were used as method to analyse the data collected from newspaper articles. The content analysis findings showed that Zille compared to De Lille received significant coverage and most headlines were referring to her. The findings of the critical discourse analysis indicate that language was sometimes used to perpetuate stereotypes through the use of tone, choice of language in headings, metaphors; puns, oxymorons as well as insinuations. The hypotheses was that the race of the candidates would feature prominently in the findings however there was very little about the race of the candidates. The analysis revealed that there was a focus on the race and class of the audiences and voters addressed by Zille and De Lille during their campaign period. Keywords: Feminist media theory, race, media, gender, elections, Helen Zille and Patricia De Lille.

Roy, Anne-Marie.

Abstract:
After it was declared capital city of the new Reich in 1871, Berlin was a very dense and very modern European metropolis in regards to different industries, technologies and public transports. However, the Emperor at the head of the country, Wilhelm II (1859-1941), tried to maintain a highly glorified image of his State and imposed his ideal conception of the arts. In so doing, he created an artistic policy, a Kunstpolitik, and strongly urged the Berliner artists of his era to work in a very conservative artistic genre. It is during a famous speech for the inauguration of the Victory Avenue, situated in the Tiergarten in Berlin, on the 18th December 1901, that the Emperor expressed his exact thoughts on what makes a good or a bad artist, and what kind of art is right or wrong. Any art diverging from his ideal would be qualified as “Rinnsteinkunst”. Heinrich Zille (1858-1929), a working-class draftsman and caricaturist, spent his whole career sketching the proletarians and the poor in a satirical, naturalist and blunt way, exposing their everyday lives and their environment, called the “Milljöh”. This thesis attempts to draw the direct relation between the concepts of the “Rinnsteinkunst” and the work of Heinrich Zille, to finally establish a concrete example of what this “gutter art” is about and to demonstrate how Zille used this artistic style. Belonging to the Berlin modernist movement, mainly as part of the Berlin Secession, Zille drew a lot of attention from the public by bringing forward taboo subjects that were banned from official art. His oeuvre, crafted using different formats, mediums, techniques, shows the hidden face of the official imperial Berlin. Innovations in printing techniques, as well as the development of intermediality and international artistic relations allowed for a wide circulation of his drawings, strongly fostering the establishment of modern art in Berlin.
