Abstract:
The heterogeneous hydrolysis/oxidation of zinc vapor is proposed as a promising reaction path for the exothermic step in two-step Zn/ZnO solar thermochemical water and carbon dioxide splitting cycles. This approach circumvents mass transfer limitations encountered in the oxidation of solid or liquid zinc, promising rapid hydrogen/carbon monoxide production rates and complete conversion of zinc. In this paper, a parametric thermodynamic analysis is presented to quantify the penalty of generating zinc vapor as well as the benefit of achieving complete conversion of zinc via the heterogeneous oxidation of zinc vapor. The penalty for generating zinc vapor is a reduction in water splitting efficiency from 36% to 27% and a reduction in carbon dioxide splitting efficiency from 39% to 31%. However, with heat recuperation this penalty can be avoided. The benefit of completely converting zinc via the heterogeneous oxidation of zinc vapor is an increase in efficiency from ∼6% to 27% and 31% for water and carbon dioxide splitting, respectively.

Abstract:
Abstract Thermal-sprayed zinc anodes are used in impressed current cathodic protection systems for some of Oregon's coastal reinforced concrete bridges. Electrochemical aging of zinc anodes results in physical and chemical changes at the zinc-concrete interface. Concrete surfaces heated prior to thermal-spraying had initial adhesion strengths 80% higher than unheated surfaces. For electrochemical aging greater than 200 kC/m2 (5.2 A-h/ft2), there was no difference in adhesion strengths for zinc on preheated and unheated concrete. Adhesion strengths decreased monotonically after about 400 to 600 kC/m2 (10.4 to 15.6 A-h/ft2) as a result of the reaction zones at the zinc-concrete interface. A zone adjacent to the metallic zinc (and originally part of the zinc coating) was primarily zincite (ZnO), with minor constituents of wulfingite (Zn(OH)2), simonkolleite (Zn5(OH)8Cl2H20), and hydrated zinc hydroxide sulfates (Zn4S04(OH)5xH20). This zone is the locus for cohesive fracture when the zinc coating separates from the concrete during adhesion tests. Zinc ions substitute for calcium in the cement paste adjacent to the coating as the result of secondary mineralization. The initial estimate of the coating service life based on adhesion strength measurements in accelerated impressed current cathodic protection tests is about 27 years.

Abstract:
Abstract A continuous galvanizing line (CGL) has a zinc pot, which is filled with molten zinc for zinc coating. In a zinc pot there are pot rolls to guide steel strip. Usually WC-Co thermal sprayed coatings are used for protection of the pot rolls from severe corrosion by molten zinc. Authors analyzed WC-Co coatings used in a zinc pot of a CGL for 33 and 56 days. On the surface of a WC-Co coated roll, many kinds of deposits were observed including top dross, Fe2Al5 inter-metallic compound, which might induce dross defect on the surface of galvanized steel. Diffusion depth of zinc into the WC-Co coating used for 33 days was only within 10µm but some areas were severely attacked along cracks within the coating layer. Usually molten zinc contains small amount of aluminum about 0.12 - 0.2%. Through SEM study, we observed that not only zinc but also aluminum diffused into the WC-Co coating after service in the zinc pot for 56 days. Al-Fe rich layers were observed on the surface of the spray coating for some cases. The phase of those layers might be Fe2Al5 since their chemical compositions are similar to Fe2Al5 top dross.

Abstract:
This study is focused on the second step of ZnO/Zn thermo-chemical cycle, where zinc (produced in the first step of the cycle) reacts with steam to produce hydrogen and zinc oxide. The simulation of this hydrogen production step was carried out inside a cylindrical reactor using commercial CFD software, FLUENT. A parametric study was conducted based on the zinc particle diameter, reactor wall temperature, and steam/zinc molar ratio. The yield of hydrogen was found to increase with an increase in the reactor wall temperature, and with a decrease in the zinc particle diameter. However, steam/zinc molar ratio was found to have no effect on the hydrogen yield.

Abstract:
Pressure leaching is one of the most high-demanded and promising hydrometallurgical technology, which allows one to obtain high efficiency. Taking into account the shutdown of zinc plant in Vladikavkaz («Electrozinc, Lls.») searching the modern methods of zinc production is of current interest. In this work, the issue was observed on influence of temperature and sodium lignosulfonate (SL) onto the zinc and iron sulfides behavior during pressure leaching of zinc sulfide concentrate from the Uchalinsk deposit. Temperature increasing from 130 to 150oC led to decreasing of zinc extraction and sulfur-sulfide pellets formation; that indicated increasing the zinc sulfide wettability by the molten sulfur due to reduction of viscosity and surface tension of molten sulfur. Increasing the LSN dosage promoted running up of the absolute value of the zinc extraction. The highest growth of the zinc extraction (17.39 %) was obtained at 0.2 g/dm3 LSN. Further increasing of the LSN concentration on 0.2 g/dm3 (up to 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 g/dm3) led to double decrease of their effectiveness in reference to previous LSN concentration.
