Natural enrichment of ²³⁴U with respect to ²³⁸U was investigated in perched water, vadose zone pore waters, and secondary minerals. The activity ratio (AR) for dissolved ²³⁴U increased from about 1.4 in runoff to >6 in perched water. The AR in the vadose zone increased sharply at a transition that correlated with increased magnetic susceptibility and decreasing hydraulic conductivity. This was evidently caused by auto—oxidative selective leaching controlled by matrix saturation. Aeration of wastewater is performed in many wastewater treatment plants to supply oxygen to microorganisms. To evaluate the performance of a single aerator or an aeration system, there is a standard method for oxygen transfer measurements in clean water used today. The model is a simplified description of the oxygen transfer which could possibly result in performance results that are not accurate. That is why many have tried to describe the aeration at other w

This thesis presents a study into the flow processes in the Chalk unsaturated zone at a research site in east Yorkshire. The unsaturated zone plays an important role in reducing groundwater flooding by temporally spreading the impact of storm recharge events and provides a buffer in which surface contaminants may be delayed and attenuated before reaching the water table. Due to the complex dual porosity nature of the Chalk, flow and solutes can be rapidly moved through the unsaturated zone via preferential fracture pathways or more slowly through the porous matrix.
