Full textThis PhD work is on Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) based on Active Remote-Sensing in Africa. As part of the Megha-Tropiques Satellite Ground Validation (MTGV) field campaigns a X-band dual-polarization Doppler radar was deployed in Sahel, West-Africa : during 2010 in Niamey, Niger and during 2012-2013, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Altogether 200 convective systems were observed jointly by the radar and by a network of rain gauges. Based on this data set, a comparative study of several rainfall estimators that use X-band polarimetric radar data is presented. In tropical convective systems as encountered in Sahel, microwave attenuation by rain is significant and QPE at X-band is a challenge. Here, four algorithms based on the combined use of reflectivity, differential reflectivity and differential phase shift are evaluated against rain gauges. The comparisons are carried out for a range of space-time scales. Several comparison methods are proposed. Classical statistical scores are used to evaluate the rainfall time series derived from the radar by comparison with the rain gauges. The spatial structure of the fields and the frequency distributions of the rain rates are also compared. These are important parameters to consider when the rain-fields are to be used for hydrological applications or for satellite validation. The results show that the best performances are for the estimator based on the differential phase shift (KDP); another acceptable solution is the estimation based on the specific attenuation (AH). The overall agreement between the radar derived rainfields and the gauges is high. This PhD work confirms that X-band polarimetric radar is a (relatively) cost effective and quality option for monitoring hydro-meteorological risks in the Tropics

Full textThe aim of this work is to link quantitatively the characteristics (intensity and sizedistribution) of the flux of fine mineral particles produced by wind-erosion in a Sahelian zone with the aerodynamic conditions prevailing during the erosion events. Achieving this goal is a prerequisite for quantifying accurately 1) the transfer of soil nutrients (N, P, Fe…) from the source areas to the deposition zones located downwind, and 2) the impact on climate of air-suspended mineral particles which are able to scatter and absorb solar and terrestrial radiation. An important part of this work has been dedicated to the collection of experimental data during the 2006 and 2007 summer campaigns of the « Analyse Multidisciplinaire de la Mousson Africaine » (AMMA) experiment. Measurements were carried out at Banizoumbou (60km east of Niamey, Niger) on a sandy agricultural field representative of the Sahelian wind erodible surfaces. After describing the original experimental set-up and associated methodology, a complete study of all the types of events monitored during the field campaigns is made. Very few transport cases accompanied by significant deposition were observed (only two over the whole measuring period), but many erosion cases were recorded. The latter could result either from the temporal strengthening of the south western monsoon winds prevailing in this season (‘monsoon events’) or to the passage of convective systems accompanied by strong surface winds and often followed by rain (‘convective events’). After rigorous cross examination of the quality of the data set 2 events of the monsoon type and one of the convective type are retained for the rest of the study. In good agreement with previous wind tunnel experiments, comparing the size distributions measured during the events confirms that the emission flux is richer in very fine particles during the energetic convective event than during the less violent monsoon ones. Then, these results are compared with the predictions of the Dust Production Model (DPM) based on the previous wind-tunnel studies. It is found that the DPM is able to simulate correctly the intensity of the emission mass flux provided adequate values are selected for the binding energies of the fine particle populations identified in the laboratory experiments. However, a more detailed analysis of the size-resolved fluxes reveals that the DPM tends to overestimate the production of particles larger than 10µm and underestimate the flux of particles with sizes between 2 and 8µm. This leads us to propose a new parameterization based on a detailed study of the 3 events selected previously. This parameterization allows prediction of the changes in emission flux intensity and sizedistribution with aerodynamic conditions. In a final step, the parameterization is tested successfully on an independent erosion event

Full textThe international project AMMA, in which this work of thesis is linked, aims to improve comprehension of the phenomena related to monsoon in West Africa, and in particular, exchanges of energy between continental, oceanic surfaces and the atmosphere. Concerning continental surfaces, these exchanges are mainly controlled by vegetation quantity and soil moisture. In this context, the use of radar sensors, sensitive to these two factors, appears useful in areas where the cloud cover is often marked. However, no sensors used up to now (Wind SCatterometers and SAR) offers at the same time a wide spatial cover combined to high space and temporal resolutions. The SAR of second generation, such as the one on board ENVISAT, offers an interesting compromise between spatial and temporal resolutions. This work is based on the use of ENVISAT/ASAR data and is organized around three complementary axes: (1) Treatment and analyzes data acquired in Global Monitoring and Wide Swath modes. This study showed a stronger aptitude of this last one for the estimations of the soil moisture at kilometric scales, while keeping a large space cover. The use of radar data in a bi-objective assimilation algorithm, associated with optical data, helped to improve biomass and LAI estimation. (2) Acquisition of ground data (soil roughness and soil moisture) allowed us to determine, via radar models, that the radar signal is mainly controlled soil characteristics. (3) Empirical estimate and cartography of the soil moisture from radar signal. .
