Full textLocated in central Niger, on the edge of the Damagaram and of Nigeria, Matameye district (department of Zinder) records a sahelo-sudanese climate featuring great irregularities in times and in space. Being on overcultivated area as well as a much inhabited one, its rural society must face serious threats : the disappearance of fallow, a marked erosion of soils, and crops which often enough show a deficit. In order to be able to meet their needs, heads of families must set up strategies : according to the feasibility they turn to commercial farming, horticulture or breeding. Markets, as trading and meeting places, ensure the spreading of crafstmen articles and manufactured intems. Due to its proximity to Nigeria, these peoples regularly migrate. The youngest brothers and the sons emigrate in order to escape the stiff authority of the Mai Gida. As a matter of fact, this rural community is of a hierarchical and septate type, needless to say, rather inequal. In view of the decrease of agricultural incomings, towards 1974, the technical and administrative authorities have launched upon this rural environment a developing project (known as the "3M" project : Magaria, Matameye and Mirria) regardless of any previous, serious, socio-economical study. The acts are being imposed without even consulting the peasants and it will be a failure that may very well leave a deep mark upon these peoples

Full textThe present study proposes to study rainfall variability and its incidence on the physical and socio-economic environment in the chadian sudanian field during the four last decades. Covering the tenth of the surface of the territory, this zone concentrates half of the chadian population. The climatic conditions more favorable to the economic activities justify this strong human concentration in this zone. But the dry nesses which struck the cloise sahelian field during the thirty last years almost diverted the attention of the researchers, leaving for account this sudanian field, however qualified of “useful Chad”. Under the pressure of these dry nesses repeated in the Sahel, many wandering stockbreeders are driven back towards this sudanian zone where they are dedicated to the seddentarisation and the agricultural life, whereas the field was already almost with saturation. This established fact constitutes a factor not less important of changes of this medium even if the climatic conditions in its centre vary little. So a methodological approach multi varied based on the one hand on the knowledge of the medium through the documentation and the lived experiments of the local population, and in addition on the treatments statistics and cartographic of the climatological data, allow to apprehend the total evolution so much climatic, ecological, that socio-economic of this region

Full textSocial sciences can contribute a great deal to better understanding the subtle relationship between mankind and its environment: "ethnoscience" has proven to be an invaluable tool when tackling issues related to ecology, forest sciences and agronomy in a tropical environment. In Mali, fuel supply depends on firewood to the rate of 91%; charcoal clearing usually occurs round about the main towns, which have been studied first. As population growths rapidly in the country, so does demand for fuel. Supplying towns with fuel depends on the evolution of farm systems and their productive capacity, which were worth analyzing. This research deals with the structure of society, the way the farmers act, where and how decisions are made. According to a scaling-up methodology and a systemic approach, data was gathered and processed in a suitable spatial framework. In addition, a range of indicators was set up to help model a regional land system typology. The main purpose was an attempt to understand how farmers have access to and manage fuel resources, as well as to explain the strategy of the farm units. A decision-making model with regard to "agrosystem" management has been proposed based on the data collected at the various working scales. This model is based on three major established facts. First, fuel-wood consumption increases as a function of availability of fuel resource, and according to the grade of dispersal of the large African family. As they form a valuable energy supply of 1,5 m3/ha/year, fallow fields should be used as a very short rotation copse inside the rotation system. In addition, the rural landscape known as "tree park" represents an unused stock of scattered fuel, and the traditional "tree park" scattered structure should be rationalized and converted into a linear system, more suitable for farming, cattle breeding and forest. Town fuel supply should be changed to a long-term, sustainable management process which should be administrated at the community, with a goal to trade any potential stock surplus for increased revenues

Full textStarting from a general study on cotton (ecological and historical), this thesis deals with the history of the spreading of the cultivation of the cotton by France in its African colonies. After the first attempts, diversified and with unequal results (failure in "AOF" and Cameroun, questionable success in AEF), in 1950 was put in place organizations which ensured the success of this approach: IRCT (Institut de Recherches du Coton et des Textiles Exotiques) and CFDT (Compagnie Française pour le Développement des Fibres Textiles). This cultivation and the companies who promoted it, CFDT and national subsidiaries which relayed it, invested of a mission widened to the whole development, played a preponderant role in the raising up of this area, by applying an identical plan based on the small producers and the integration of the chain from the production of the "cotton-graine" to the commercialization of the fiber, as it is well illustrated with the case of the Cameroun. From the example of the cotton, the analysis widens to the economical politic of France vis-à-vis these African countries, during the colonial age and after, pointing out their situation of dependence in regards of their former mother country and international bodies (BM and OMC), setting the problem of a disparity North/South in the present system of globalization dominated by the US through the action of falling quotations and subventions
