Abstract:
(Uploaded by Plazi for the Bat Literature Project) Background: Understanding how and why people interact with animals is important for the prevention and control of zoonoses. To date, studies have primarily focused on the most visible forms of human-animal contact (e.g., hunting and consumption), thereby blinding One Health researchers and practitioners to the broader range of human-animal interactions that can serve as cryptic sources of zoonotic diseases. Zootherapy, the use of animal products for traditional medicine and cultural practices, is widespread and can generate opportunities for human exposure to zoonoses. Existing research examining zootherapies omits details necessary to adequately assess potential zoonotic risks. Methods: We used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data from questionnaires, key informant interviews, and field notes to examine the use of zootherapy in nine villages engaged in wildlife hunting, consumption, and trade in Cross River State, Nigeria. We analyzed medicinal and cultural practices involving animals from a zoonotic disease perspective, by including details of animal use that may generate pathways for zoonotic transmission. We also examined the sociodemographic, cultural, and environmental contexts of zootherapeutic practices that can further shape the nature and frequency of human-animal interactions. Results: Within our study population, people reported using 44 different animal species for zootherapeutic practices, including taxonomic groups considered to be "high risk" for zoonoses and threatened with extinction. Variation in use of animal parts, preparation norms, and administration practices generated a highly diverse set of zootherapeutic practices (n = 292) and potential zoonotic exposure risks. Use of zootherapy was patterned by demographic and environmental contexts, with zootherapy more commonly practiced by hunting households (OR = 2.47, p < 0.01), and prescriptions that were gender and age specific (e.g., maternal and pediatric care) or highly seasonal (e.g., associated with annual festivals and seasonal illnesses). Specific practices were informed by species availability and theories of healing (i.e., "like cures like" and sympathetic healing and magic) that further shaped the nature of human-animal interactions via zootherapy.

Abstract:
The treatment of human and animal aliments by using drugs based on extracts obtained from animals, or ultimately derivedfrom them, is known as zootherapy. Although this is a relatively common practice, studies on this subject are relativelyscarce when compared to those that are focused on traditional plant-based medicines. In Brazil, 326 animals are exploitedfor medicinal purposes, most of which are wild species. The number of literature records on the medicinal uses of animalsis much lower than those on the use of medicinal plants and their implications, which suggests the need to develop moreresearch on the topic. Among the many factors that highlight the importance of a greater understanding of zootherapy, are:historical perspectives, aspects related to conservation, the validation of traditional medicines, and the difficulties indeveloping research on the medicinal fauna. In this study, we provide a brief discussion of each topic.

Abstract:
Zoopharmacognosy is the multidisciplinary approach of the self-medication behavior of many kinds of animals. Recent studies showed the presence of antitumoral secondary metabolites in some of the plants employed by animals and their use for the same therapeutic purposes in humans. Other related and sometimes confused term is Zootherapy, which consists on the employment of animal parts and/or their by-products such as toxins, venoms, etc., to treat different human ailments. Therefore, the aim of this work is to provide a brief insight for the use of Zoopharmacology (comprising Zoopharmacognosy and Zootherapy) as new paths to discover drugs studying animal behavior and/or using compounds derived from animals. This work is focused on the approaches related to cancer, in order to propose a new promising line of research to overcome multidrug resistance (MDR). This novel subject will encourage the use of new alternative prospective ways to find new medicines.

Abstract:
Introduction: The use of animals for medical treatment or zootherapy has been reported all over the world. This study aims to assess the potential use of leech, dhab lizard and mudskipper for men’s sexual health, particularly in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). Methods: Using systematic review study design, relevant articles were located from three electronic databases, which are OvidMEDLINE, Google Scholar and PubMed. A total of 180 articles were searched from the electronic databases and 10 journal articles were included in the study. Another 12 articles were identified from hand-search of reference list. Results: There were limited human studies reporting the use of the leech, mudskipper and dhab lizard for men’s sexual health. Hence, the efficacy and safety of the aforementioned zootherapy were not able to be determined. Conclusion: A recommendation for well-designed studies in vitro and in vivo are needed before the animal’s product and derivatives can be used in clinical trials.

Abstract:
Children with special needs experience significant difficulties in organizing their educational and communicative activities and behavior due to their developmental characteristics, as well as somatic diseases. Such children have problems in socialization and psycho-emotional sphere (they are anxious, vulnerable, painfully react to changes in life circumstances, and prone to frequent mood changes). They also have limited ideas about the world around and underdeveloped higher mental functions. The purpose of social rehabilitation is to restore skills, lost or not acquired during socialization, and abilities to perform social functions, relationships, and roles. One of the means of social rehabilitation is zootherapy, which is based on the interaction of a person with an animal. Zootherapy includes various areas: hippotherapy, canis therapy, dolphin therapy, feline therapy, etc. Therapy with animals has a positive effect on children with special needs: it stabilizes the emotional state, reduces the level of anxiety and stress, and promotes the development of communication skills, as well as the development of moral qualities.

Abstract:
Animals have been used as medicinal resources for the treatment and relieve of a myriad of illnesses and diseases in practically every human culture. Although considered by many as superstition, the pertinence of traditional medicine based on animals cannot be denied since they have been methodically tested by pharmaceutical companies as sources of drugs to the modern medical science. The phenomenon of zootherapy represents a strong evidence of the medicinal use of animal resources. Indeed, drug companies and agribusiness firms have been evaluating animals for decades without paying anything to the countries from where these genetic resources are found. The use of animals' body parts as folk medicines is relevant because it implies additional pressure over critical wild populations. It is argued that many animal species have been overexploited as sources of medicines for the traditional trade. Additionally, animal populations have become depleted or endangered as a result of their use as experimental subjects or animal models. Research on zootherapy should be compatible with the welfare of the medicinal animals, and the use of their by-products should be done in a sustainable way. It is discussed that sustainability is now required as the guiding principle for biological conservation.

Interviews were conducted with 19 informants experts who held knowledge about birds, between the months of September 2012 to May 2013, identified by the “snowball” technique. The interviews were semi-structured and recorded, and included identifying the birds by photos (Checklist). The appealing characteristics that most attract the informants are the birds’ singing, followed by the beauty of their plumage; their potential for being hunted was another characteristic that appealed to the informants. The participants cited 98 species of birds from 32 families, which constituted 50.7% of the species in that region. The birds are used in three ways: consumption, breeding and for medicinal purposes. Consumption is the activity most frequently mentioned by the informants, and which includes the greatest number of species, ten of which stand out with greater UV – those which possess the characteristic of a high potential for being hunted. In terms of breeding, three stand out with greater UV – those which possess a singing characteristic. Three species of birds were mentioned as being used for medicinal purposes: Cyanocorax cyanopogon, which is used whole for speech problems; the feathers of Crypturellus noctivagus, for snakebites; and Crotophaga ani, used whole for treating “heavy cough”. Thus, knowledge of the medicinal use of birds in the semi-arid region of Brazil provide a relevant contribution to the phenomenon of zootherapy, by providing opportunities for discussions on conservation biology and sustainable use of natural resources, and by defining the best strategies to be adopted by environmental agencies to ensure the survival both of the species of birds used and of the communities that depend on them.

Its uses can result in impact to biodiversity. However studies that seek to understand the interaction between these two resources in the same local medical system are nonexistent. An important tool for this type of research is the utilitarian redundancy model, because it allows us to evaluate how the richness of medicinal resources is distributed among the different therapeutic targets, indicating possible overlapping of use between plants and animals and revealing species that could suffer a higher use pressure. This model also involves issues related to resilience, predicting that therapeutic targets with a smaller arsenal of species would be more vulnerable to changes in local medical systems. In this context, this study aims to investigate the relationships between the use of medicinal plants and animals and the traditional medical system of Horizonte, which is an extractive community located in the Environmental Protection Area of FLONA Araripe - Apodi in the semiarid region of Northeastern Brazil. We found that most of the therapeutic targets treated by animal substances are overlapped, i.e., are also treated by plant substances, and these targets concentrate most of medicinal resources. They are perceived as very usual, although considered a little dangerous. This similar behavior of people using medicinal plants and animals reflect in the formation of a common core of knowledge, shared by most of the community. Furthermore, the population considers plants and animals equally effective in curing overlapped therapeutic targets. However, plants are used mostly due to their greater availability. The data also indicates that women have more knowledge about medicinal resources closer to their residential area; a space where they spend more time due to their responsibilities in taking care of the families. On the other hand men know more about medicinal resources related to forests; spaces often more visited by them. This occur because they are responsible for supporting their families, fact that leads them to frequently explore these areas. The results indicate the existence of general patterns related to the use of medicinal resources, in which the energy optimization, perceived priorities, spaces occupied and social functions seem to guide the use, collection and the sharing of knowledge of medicinal plants and animals; attributing greater resilience and adaptability to the local medical system.

Abstract:
The adoption of One Health, the historic resolution that ensued from the understanding between the American Medical Association and the American Veterinary Association in 2007, defined and promoted the concept of One Health as "the combined effort of multiple professional disciplines to achieve optimal health of humans, animals and the environment". Despite One Health was at first aimed at infectious diseases, over time it has inevitably permeated other areas, emphasizing how different health issues should be addressed through a holistic approach which looks at the overall health through the development and application of advanced and multidisciplinary for the benefit of humans, domestic animals and biodiversity. As a result of the need to evaluate the person in its complexity, in the context of human and veterinary medicine, there has been a growing interest in integrated approaches whose aim is prevention, diagnosis and treatment of certain diseases. More specifically, the need to develop new policy approaches that can also act upon environmental, psychosocial and lifestyle factors has led to the creation of Healthcare Zooanthropology, understood as the study, administration and application of the relationship between humans and animals in contexts that are both healthcare/therapeutic and didactic which can be an effective resource for health promotion. In this specific context, the Doctor in Veterinary Medicine casts his figure in the social dimension as the bridge of the interspecific relationship and as the synthesis of its expression by serving as the professional guarantor for the safeguard and the promotion of health and welfare of humans and animals alike through the development of specific health and therapeutic protocols that are applicable within specific Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAIs). This dissertation has two main objectives. The first is to apply the Federico II Model of Zootherapy whose multidisciplinary team is entrusted with activating a communication system and an interspecific relationship that has the dog co-therapist as its focus. The second objective is to verify the data pertaining to the effects of three different possibilities of application of the above mentioned Model. To do so, the analyses of psychological and biochemical parameters were conducted on the humans whereas the behavioural and health parameters were tested on the animal involved. The experimental application of the Model was carried out in three different contexts connected to ageing. More specifically: 1) Evaluation of the efficacy of Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) based on the reality orientation therapy (ROT) in Alzheimer’s disease patients via analysis of psychological parameters: Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and 5-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). 2) Zootherapy as an wellness-promoting intervention in patients affected with Dementia and depression via salivary cortisol measurement in the Veterinary Zootherapist, co-therapist dogs and in the patient(s). 3) One project in health prevention and well-being promotion in older healthy individuals by enhancing the symbolic value of the dog and through the measurement of salivary cortisol in the Veterinary Zootherapist and in the elderly. Moreover, in line with the One Health policies and as planned for by the specific health-related protocols fostered by the Federico II Model, three different investigations were conducted so as to correctly analyse, evaluate and prevent zoonosic risk in dogs that were involved in the AAIs settings: 1) Epidemiological survey of Pasteurella multocida from oral cavity of dogs. 2) Epidemiological survey of Thermotolerant Campylobacter in dogs at Dog Educational Centres. 3) Parasitic infections in dogs involved in Animal Assisted Interventions.

Abstract:
This thesis, which is titled "Application of feline therapy in retirement homes", deals with the application of therapy with the help of a cat in clients of retirement homes and the impact of this therapy on the quality of their lives. The aim of this thesis is to find out how much the clients' quality of life changed over the period of one year of regular feline therapy. The thesis consists of two parts; a theoretical and a practical one. The theoretical part is divided into four sections. The first one is focused on zootherapy. It offers basic information on zootherapy such as its division, forms and application. A sole focus on feline therapy follows. The first half of the section on feline therapy concentrates on general information on feline therapy and its impact on people. The second half deals with its practical aspects. Here It explains what kind of cats are suitable for feline therapy and give basic information on breeds most often used for feline therapy. Then follows an introduction of programmes and organizations of feline therapy in the Czech Republic. Some foreign organizations working in feline therapy are presented at the end of this section. The second section deals with the issue of age and ageing. It explains changes occurring during the ageing process of the human organism at all levels of personality followed by the description of seniors' needs. It also studies seniors' quality of life and the possibilities of research into it. The final part is focused on housing service for seniors. First the history of housing services and their current division in the Czech Republic are described. As the research was carried out in a retirement home, this institution is described more thoroughly. Since quality is an important element of a well-functioning facility, inspection of quality of these facilities is mentioned in this section too. Housing services are obliged to create an individual plan for each client and since feline therapy is often used as part of such plans the final part examines this issue in greater detail too. The qualitative research was chosen as a tool for this thesis. The research focuses on the quality of life of senior housing clients. The main tools of the research were a semi-structured interview and observation of the clients. A semi-structured interview with the staff of Pisek Retirement Home who are often in contact with these clients was used as an additional research. Feline therapy does not only help the clients of the facility but it also affects the staff and other members of the team. That is why It asked a few questions about the effect of feline therapy on the employees of the facility. The results of the research showed that feline therapy improves mainly the clients' mental state. Positive changes in mood as well as a positive view of the clients' future were noticeable. Feline therapy also improves the clients' physical state although not as significantly as the mental state. It is used as an element of support during physiotherapy or to motivate clients' exercise. The results are noticeable mainly in fine motor skills of hands. The research between the employees shows that feline therapy does not significantly improve the atmosphere in the workplace and is beneficial to individuals rather than the whole team. On the other hand the therapy helps the staff in working with the clients who are in a better mood, communicate better and thus cooperate more willingly. This thesis can be used as a methodical aid for beginners among professionals interested in feline therapy. The results of this thesis can be used to improve therapeutic activities with cats and the overall progress of feline therapy in the Czech Republic.

Canine therapy serves as a support of the psychosocial health of clients from all age groups, where a presence of a dog is used. It is method widely used in social work, social rehabilitation and physiotherapy. The theoretical part if the diploma thesis has been divided into two parts. The first part deals with a field of the zoo-therapy and it focuses on a terminology in that field, its history or methods and forms of the zoo-therapy. It notices, however, also umbrella organizations in the zoo-therapy, Czech as well as international ones. The second part is devoted to the canine therapy from its beginning, i. e. since the beginning of a man´s coexistence with a dog. The theoretical part describes possibilities for providing the canine therapy in accordance with the current legislation. The author also devotes to a composition and training of a canine therapy team and to its preparation for passing of the canine therapy tests. Currently, there is missing a database of people who are engaged in the canine therapy in practice. An aim of the practical part of the diploma thesis is to design such a database structure that would allow an easier contact among these people and therefore an easier access to getting relevant information and experience. The database should contain information for people who are supposed to be interested in services of canine therapy teams. The author published a call in magazines Dog ? Man´s Friend and Dog´s World on websites. The call addressed people practising the canine therapy and it invited them to participate in the research. A technique of e-mail survey (CAMI) was used to collect the data. Further a questionnaire with open questions was used. The other used technique was a content analysis of documents. The database of people practising canine therapy in the Czech Republic has been created. At the same time the collected information has provided a basis to compare competences of these people. The database could be used in order to improve a communication, an exchange experience and a complex development of the field.
