Full textIn the framework of a comprehensive experimental program the ultimate strength of textile reinforced concrete has been determined under consideration of uniaxial tensile load. In result varying data are available which indicate a non-deterministic (uncertain) strength. The experimental results provide a moderate basis for statistical evaluations and the quantification of uncertainty. Furthermore, manual calculation in structural design requires a certain safety distance. For this task, partial safety factors have been defined and incorporated in the design codes to ensure a predefined safety level. In this context, this paper gives suggestions for the definition of partial safety factors for textile reinforced concrete with AR glass and carbon reinforcement

Full textStrain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCC) and textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) are two novel types of fiber-reinforced cementitious composites that exhibit ductile, strain-hardening tensile behavior. SHCC comprises fine-grained cementitious matrices and short, high-performance polymer fiber, while TRC is a combination of a fine-grained, cementitious matrix and continuous two- or three- dimensional textile layers of multi-filament yarns, usually made of carbon or alkali-resistant glass. Both composites yield high inelastic deformations in a strain-hardening phase due to the successive formation of multiple fine cracks. Such cracking behavior stands for high energy absorption of the composites when exposed to extreme loading, without abrupt loss of load-bearing capacity. In comparative terms, SHCC shows superior strain capacity, while TRC yields considerably higher tensile strength. The addition of short fibers strengthens the matrix by efficiently restraining the micro-cracks’ growth and reducing spallation, while the textile reinforcement ensures a secure confinement of the reinforced concrete element (substrate to be strengthened), as well as a favorable stress distribution. The combination of SHCC and textile reinforcement is expected to deliver high tensile strength and stiffness in the strain-hardening stage along with pronounced multiple cracking. In order to achieve a favorable synergetic effect, a purposeful material design is required based on a clear understanding of the mechanical interactions in the composites. In the framework of the DFG Research Training Group GRK 2250, which aims at enhancing structural impact safety through thin strengthening layers made of high-performance mineral-based composites, this work focuses on developing hybrid fiber-reinforced cementitious materials to be applied on the impact rear side. The development concept builds upon a systematic investigation of various aspects of the mechanical behaviors of SHCC and textile at quasi-static and impact strain rates, including the bond properties of fiber to matrix and textile to matrix. Accordingly, uniaxial quasi-static tension tests were first performed on SHCC, bare textile, and hybrid-reinforced composite specimens. The parameters under investigation were types of short fiber and textile reinforcements, reinforcing the ratio for textile as well as bond properties between textile and the surrounding SHCC. Furthermore, impact tension tests were performed to study the strain rate effect on the synergetic composite response. Finally, single-yarn pull-out tests were carried out under both quasi-static and impact loading rates to supplement the comparative assessment of the hybrid fiber-reinforced composites. These tests yielded shear strength-related parameters for quantifying the bond properties of different materials, which were then used as input of the analytical model developed to describe the mechanics of crack propagation and tension stiffening effect of textile-reinforced composites without short fibers. This model is the first step towards a comprehensive analytical description of the tensile behavior of hybrid fiber-reinforced composites based on the experimental data and input parameters attained through the work at hand.

Full textThe development and introduction of ecological construction methods and the use of sandwich materials make it necessary to develop new fixing systems and technologies. Dealing with the application in concrete and other substrates commercial chemical fixing systems show some disadvantages up to date. Especially the rather long curing time in order to realize the final bond strength, inhomogenities in the composite, the partial use of toxic substances and application limits of such systems in horizontal direction as well as hollow section materials has so far prevented the use of such composites for all-purpose applications. A new chemical fixing system, which consists of hexamethylene tetramine (hexa) cured novolac and inorganic filler, was developed for application in concrete. It is applied by a thermo-curing procedure. The uncatalyzed curable mixture has a high reactivity at temperature between 150-300 °C. Compared with commercial chemical fixing systems, the premixed curable mass has many benefits. First it has a unique storage stability and second, it is free of toxic and volatile substances. Another important aspect is, it is self-foaming. In this study was investigated the overall kinetics of the reaction during the curing process of these polymer composites. An appropriate method for this experiment proved to be the DSC in isothermal and non-isothermal mode and MDSC. This turned out to be a safe quality control technique for these systems. Parallel to the non-isothermal and isothermal DSC conductivity measurements have been performed to determine the end point of the curing reaction

Full textThe objectives of this dissertation are the characterization of the components (natural fibers, polymers) and the resulting properties of the composites. Due to differences in fiber morphology, mainly caused by the date of harvest, retting and fiber separation procedures, the mechanical properties and the fiber/matrix interface are effected. The degradation and the limits of the process are characterized by means of thermal analysis, Ubbelohde viscosimetry, NMR spectroscopy and single fiber tensile test. Surface sensitive methods (BET measurements, zeta potential measurements, IR-spectroscopy) were applied to evaluate the fiber/matrix interface. The composites were first manufactured by compounding and injection molding as well as by consolidation of hybrid nonwovens and characterized by means of quasi statical and dynamic-mechanical methods. The effect of adequate fiber treatements, process parameters and coupling agents becomes obvious applying fractographic SEM and IR spectroscopic measurements. The gained results indicate the strengthening effect of natural fibers like flax and hemp on the performance of high polymers

Full textBecause of their exceptional properties ultrafine-grained materials, processed from conventional polycrystalline materials by severe plastic deformation, have gained increasing scientific and industrial interest during the last two decades. Based on the concept of work-hardening for f.c.c. metals the commercially pure aluminium AA1070 (Al99,7 – soft annealed) and the aluminium alloy AA6060 (AlMgSi – peak aged) were investigated. ECAP was used to introduce very high strains and an ultrafine-grained microstructure with grain sizes down to 660 nm and 310 nm. Subsequently compression and tensile tests were performed in a wide range of strain rates over seven decades up to the range of impact loading of 10^3 s^-1. The results indicate that strain path and the corresponding dislocation structure is important for the post-ECAP yielding and the following hardening response. Furthermore the precipitates of the AA6060 clearly constrain the interactions of dislocations in work-hardening stage III – causing lower strain rate sensitivity. If compared to the AA1070 they avoid hardening in stage V where an additional rate and temperature depending effect contributes – caused by the interaction of deformation induced vacancies and dislocations. The results indicate that the strain-hardening behavior can be described by thermal activated mechanisms

Full textThe load bearing and bond behaviour of textile reinforcements has been comprehensively studied experimental in recent years. The findings are based almost exclusively on uniaxial loading. Generally, from the comparison of tests on rovings and fabrics conclusions can be drawn about the influence of transverse and supporting threads and different binding patterns on the uniaxial load-bearing behaviour. However, it remains open, to what extend the found principles are applicable to multi-axial loading situations. This raises questions about the load bearing behaviour under multi-axial tension loading, which provide motivation for this work. For the experimental studies on 84 specimens a specially developed test setup for biaxial tensile loading was used. Two different types of textile reinforcements made from AR-glass and carbon fibres were examined. The results generally approve the findings on the structural behaviour of textile reinforcements exclusively derived from uniaxial tests. A relationship between first cracking stress level and biaxial stress ratio has been found. The characteristics of the cracking phases and during stabilized cracking, however, show no significant dependencies on the ratio of longitudinal and transverse tensile stresses. Furthermore, parallel cracks induced by transverse tensile stresses have no significant impact on the bond behaviour of longitudinal rovings. An essential result from biaxial tensile tests with carbon is the strong influence of waviness. It became clear that the reduction of waviness in coated textile reinforcement is highly load-dependent. In numerous experiments with carbon reinforcement delamination occurred during stabilized cracking – an effect, that has been observed in this large scale for the first time. The findings regarding the reduction of the waviness were subsequently applied to AR-glass and led to a revaluation of the known stiffness deficit in the phase IIb. Furthermore, the influence of reinforcement orientation has been studied on discoidal specimens under uni-axial loading. It was found that the load bearing capacity of carbon reinforcement is much more sensible to load orientation than AR-glass. A mathematical model was presented, which allows the separate description of geometric factors and as well as all other effects that reduce the fibre tensile strength

Full textWooden constructions are on the rise again – encouraged by a strong public and economic trend towards sustainable and resource efficient buildings. Spurred by this growing interest novel design principles and material assemblies in architecture and the building industry evolve. These developments require further research due to the absence of evaluation tools and insufficient knowledge about their design. Load-bearing timber-glass composite elements could contribute to a more efficient use of materials in façade constructions. In this case a linear adhesive bond connects the glass pane to the timber substructure. This enables an in-plane loading of the glass whose capacity is not used to its full potential in conventional façades as it is solely applied as an infill panel. The quality of the adhesive bond defines the characteristics and the performance of the whole structural component. Structural sealants such as silicones, which are typically used for the joint, provide a high flexibility and only a low load-bearing capacity. Considering such elements being part of a bracing system, the mentioned characteristics limit the application range to buildings with not more than two stories. This thesis widens the scope with an in-depth examination of high-modulus adhesives, which have not yet been evaluated for their use in building constructions. Timber-glass composite elements used as a bracing component in façades are the focus of this work. Neither the full structural component nor the adhesive have yet been included into German building standards. Hence it is essential to assess the general requirements of their application. The relevant aspects are clarified in the context of glass constructions. In addition to the scientific discussion of the results, this approach facilitates also a practical evaluation of the findings, which is a unique feature of this work. The deformability of the adhesive becomes a crucial criterion when selecting the individual materials and designing the timber-glass composite elements. A case study assesses the influence of the adhesive stiffness on the behavior of a single element and its interaction with other members of the structural system. Based on the results, three different stiffness classes are introduced to support the selection process of the adhesives to be examined in further investigations. The experimental part of this work is initiated by a comprehensive characterization of seven shortlisted adhesives. The results enable a further differentiation of suitable materials. Two adhesives qualified as suitable for the main experiments. A silicone adhesive complements the test series to serve as a reference material to the current practice. In the next phase attention is drawn to the ageing stability and on the time-dependent material behavior of the adhesives under long-term loading. Small-scale specimens made from adhesively joint timber and glass pieces are exposed to different ageing scenarios which relate to the impacts typically encountered in façades. Beyond that, creep tests are carried out on small and large shear specimen. The latter provide extra benefit as they comprise long linear adhesive joints resembling virtually the situation in a real-size element. A specific long-term test rig was developed for this purpose comprising a loading unit with gas pressurized springs. Based on the results it can be concluded that joints with adhesives of high and intermediate stiffness enable an increase of characteristic failure loads and a significant reduction of deformation. With the stiffer joint near-surface rupture of timber fibers becomes the prevailing failure mechanism. The timber strength limits further loading of the adhesive joint. However, ageing and creep testing reveal also shortcomings of the adhesives. Their application can only be recommended if redundant compensation measures are taken or the joint is protected against critical environmental impacts. Appropriate solutions are proposed with the final recommendations of this work. Methods and assessment tools that have been developed and tested for this work offer the possibility of a more straight-forward evaluation of further promising adhesives and their use in load-bearing timber-glass composites

Full textThe presentation describes how to analyze the impact of an idealized fragment into a stell protective panel with different dynamic analysis methods. Two different commercial Finite Element codes are used for this: a.) Creo Simulate: This code uses the method of modal superposition for analyzing the dynamic response of linear dynamic systems. Therefore, only modal damping and no contact can be used. The unknown force-vs.-time curve of the impact event cannot be computed, but must be assumed and applied as external force to the steel protective panel. As more dynamic the impact, as sooner the range of validity of the underlying linear model is left. b.) Abaqus/Explicit: This code uses a direct integration method for an incremental (step by step) solution of the underlying differential equation, which does not need a tangential stiffness matrix. In this way, matieral nonlinearities as well as contact can be obtained as one result of the FEM analysis. Even for extremely high-dynamic impacts, good results can be obtained. But, the nonlinear elasto-plastic material behavior with damage initiation and damage evolution must be characterized with a lot of effort. The principal difficulties of the material characterization are described

Full textSHCC is an advanced construction material developed especially for strain-hardening, quasi-ductile behaviour. Both are achieved through the combined interaction of short polymer fibres dispersed in the cementitious matrix. The resulting tensile behaviour of SHCC is characterized by a progressive formation of multiple cracks and high strain capacity, which influences the structural behaviour especially in combination with steel reinforcement. This thesis reports on experimental investigations to analyse the load-bearing behaviour of R/SHCC members. The investigations included the determination of relevant material properties as well as uniaxial tension tests on steel reinforced slab elements. The aim was to study the effect of multiple cracking on the bond interaction with steel reinforcement and their combined load-deformation behaviour. Specific attention was also given to the influence of the production process and shrinkage behaviour of SHCC. It was shown that production and size related changes of material properties influence the cracking behaviour of SHCC, which can lead to a significant reduction of tensile strain capacity in a structural element. The interaction with steel reinforcement, on the other hand, was found to facilitate multiple cracking and enhance tensile strain capacity during the stage of elastic steel deformations. However, a mutual dependency of SHCC fracture and plastic steel deformations could be observed in the post-yielding stage of the steel rebar. The experimental results were discussed with respect to their implications for constitutive modelling of the tensile load-bearing behaviour. The resulting relationships are based upon the individual material behaviour as well as their bond interaction. Further to that, the effects of SHCC shrinkage and early strain-hardening of steel reinforcement were assessed based on the experimental data. These results contribute to the understanding of the mechanical processes in order to determine the behaviour of steel reinforced SHCC for practical applications.

Methods and assessment tools that have been developed and tested for this work offer the possibility of a more straight-forward evaluation of further promising adhesives and their use in load-bearing
