Abstract:
. The historical hard coal mining area of the districts of Zwickau and Lugau/ Oelsnitz in Saxonia (Germany) is a source of heavy metals and arsenic polluting the adjacent ground- and surface waters. Heavy metals and metalloids like Zn, Cd, Ni, Co, As and Mn are transported, partially as fine precipitates, to the adjacent river Zwickauer Mulde and with that to the river Elbe. Some of the dumps are partially older than 150 years, and some of them were remediated more than 50 years ago. Today we still can learn from the more or less successful remediation measures after some decades of application. In this paper, three different dumps are presented and differences between their remediation measures and the long-term success of it shall be pointed out. As a result, especially a sealing and covering of a dump turned out as very successful for the prevention of AMD generation. A further utilization of such a remediated and revegetated area is possible, or it can be “given back” to the nature. In contrast, a revegetation without covering results in a long-term AMD-generation of such a mining dump site.

ABSTRACT On the basis of case studies from Chemnitz, Zittau, Zwickau and Schneeberg, the author demonstrates the far-reaching influence of Melanchthon even on the third generation after the Reformation and the close humanistic and “philippistic” personal relations among its members. The city Latin schools prove to be the centers and disseminators of Philippism, and the scholars involved are often persecuted as Cryptocalvinists. By means of the study of personal histories, the author differentiates more sharply between Philippism and Cryptocalvinism.

This paper discusses a little known short and unfinished epic poem on the Fourth Siege of Leipzig in 1637 by the Baroque philologist and poet Caspar von Barth (1587–1658). The poem, the autograph of which is preserved at the Ratsschulbibliothek in Zwickau, is shown to be based on a contemporary newspaper account of this event. Whilst it is suggested that the poem’s shortcomings result first and foremost from the poet’s sticking too closely to the historical source, the main part of the discussion explores the various functions and purposes the poem could have been intended to serve.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis article presents the main findings of the first detailed reconstruction of the pattern of attendance at an early modern German school, based on the exceptionally preserved matriculation records of the Latin (grammar) school of Zwickau/Saxony in the second half of the seventeenth century. It investigates pupils’ social background, their geographical mobility, and reconstructs their educational choices. Prevailing top-down perspectives on early modern education obscure the range of choices available to pupils. This article argues that substantial social mobility into learned professions formed the backdrop to the preoccupation with rank and distinction within the Republic of Letters in the Holy Roman Empire.

Abstract:
The compilation known as the Extract of Various Prophecies (Auszug etlicher Practica und Prophezeiungen) was the most popular prophetic pamphlet in Germany in the decade between 1516 and 1525. While the Extract was known to contain excerpts from the Prognosticatio of Johannes Lichtenberger and the Speculum of Johannes Grünpeck, this article identifies the sources of the introduction (Simon Eyssenmann’s annual prognostication for 1514) and the concluding verse (an annual prognostication for 1508) and clarifies the process of compilation. In contrast to earlier views that see it as a clumsy and illogical collection of excerpts, this article finds in the Extract a coherent near-term apocalypse. Hans Stainberger, a bookseller from Zwickau, played a decisive role in the pamphlet’s early dissemination, while its later circulation provides a case study in the circulation of apocalyptic ideas and the interaction between prophetic texts and prophetic preaching at the time of the Reformation.

Johann Zechendorff's (1580–1662) manuscript includes an interlinear Latin translation and a complete edition of the Arabic Qur'an. This article presents a thorough linguistic examination of a longer passage of the Latin translation of Sūrat al-Kahf (Q. 18), on the aṣḥāb al-kahf (‘the Companions of the Cave’). The aim is to give an impression of the difficulties which this European pioneer of Qur'anic studies faced when he embarked on this project. The article gives insights into Zechendorff's method of translation, his technical and linguistic abilities, as well as the shortcomings of his work. The shortcomings reflect the general standard of Arabic studies in Europe, the lack of sources and tools (such as dictionaries and tafsīrs), as well as the peripheral position of Zwickau, where this translation was produced. In the Appendix, the reader will find the Latin text of Q. 18:9–26 (with critical apparatus) and an English word-by-word translation of this text.

An enhanced entry of heavy metals and metalloids into ground and surface water was observed in the historical hard coal mining areas of the districts of Zwickau and Lugau/ Oelsnitz in Saxonia, Germany. Heavy metals and metalloids like Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, As and Cd are enriched in the surface waters of the district. This environmental impact is observed even though a recultivation of some of the dumps occurred partially already 50 years ago. In this study, preliminary microbial and geochemical characterizations of samples from drilling cores in different depths of a dump site, of surface and ground water samples, and of sediments are described. Thiobacillus denitrificans appeared to be a dominating species in these moderately acidic environment especially where there is nitrate infiltration and inflow, respectively, due to agricultural use of the adjacent area. Some of the sediment samples also contained high counts of iron- and sulfate-reducing bacteria due to the organic detritus on the sediment surface.

Abstract:
In recent decades, manufacturing industries in Europe have undergone a deep transformation due to global market competition, automation, and adaptation to globalized production patterns. The impact of deindustrialization and regional restructuring has been particularly strong on regions outside of metropolitan areas, which may be locked in their specific development path and cannot benefit from agglomeration effects. However, scholars are increasingly shifting their attention to processes of regional renewal, emphasizing the strengths and potentials of such regions. Such potentials holds the concept of Industrial Culture which is defined as a particular cultural setting made up of certain intangible assets, such as skills, attitudes, traditions, tangible monuments, and artefacts. Based on the case study of the district of Zwickau, the authors identify three dimensions of Industrial Culture. These cultural, social, and economic aspects can be underscored by different—albeit often overlapping—actions, opening up new development options for the region if embedded in a broad network of regional actors. Industrial Culture can thus be perceived as a strategic concept to form a coherent approach of regional development by integrating various existing activities in a region.

Abstract:
Abstract When, around the turn of the fifteenth century, the art of northern Europe developed a pictorial motif whereby an angel delivers the news of the Incarnation in the form of a sealed document, the material properties of ink and wax metaphorically evoked the unique properties of the inscription of divine form upon Mary’s virginal body. The social impact of this communication, the dissemination of the message to a community of recipients, could be strengthened by references to the re-transmittable nature of the announcement, as enforced by other indicators of sociability detectable in different portions of the narrative scheme. The Tucher Altarpiece in Nuremberg and Michael Wolgemut’s altarpiece for the cathedral of St. Mary in Zwickau present two examples of uses of the epistolary Annunciation that may have influenced Albrecht Dürer, who employs the motif in his woodcut series The Life of the Virgin, which also contains, along with this pictorial form of broad address, more narrowly articulated messages to his contemporaries in the form of written words.

Abstract:
e12001 Background: Only about 1% of breast cancers occur in men, respectively 400–500 new cases per year in Germany. Clinical studies on breast cancer in men are limited for case studies or retrospective analysis. In the recent years no studies have been published on the clinical course of mMBC. Therefore we here present a retrospective cohort study on this topic. Methods: Clinical and pathological tumor characteristics and the follow-up of male breast cancer patients with metastatic disease diagnosed in the region Chemnitz/Zwickau in the state of Saxony between 1995 and 2007 were documented and statistically evaluated. Results: 35 men (median age 64.7 years) were diagnosed with mMBC; 10 (28.6%) of them with primary metastasis. Median survival time: 37 months. 85.7% (n = 30) had an invasive-ductile carcinoma. Most common localizations of metastasis: bones (n = 19), lungs (n = 19), liver (n = 7). Tumor characteristics at the point of diagnosis: 63.9% (n = 22) T2-T4, 38.7% (n = 12) G3, 48.4% (n = 15) N+, 79.3% (n = 23) ER+, 72.4% (n = 21) PgR+, 12.5% (n = 3) HER-2+, 13.8% (n = 4) triple negatives, and 69.2% (n = 9) AR+. The therapy in the metastatic state was very heterogeneous and consisted of systemic endocrine therapy in 45.5% (n = 10), systemic chemo therapy in 9% (n = 2) or a combination of both in 45.5% (n = 10). In 14 (40%) cases a palliative radio therapy was administered. The initial tumor characteristics like tumor size, nodal state and grading were not of any prognostic relevance on a future development of metastasis. Prognostic unfortunate were a negative hormone receptor state (p < 0.001) and triple negative receptor state (n.s.). Patients with primary metastasis showed a tendency towards worse survival than patients who developed the metastasis during follow up (n.s.). If a systemic therapy was given the prognosis was significantly improved (p < 0.005). Conclusions: Patients suffering from metastatic male breast cancer had a comparatively good prognosis and showed significant benefit from systemic therapy in this study. In patients with negative receptor state and without systemic therapy the prognosis was especially worsened. Our data suggest that an up-to-date adequate systemic therapy is capable of improving survival in men with metastatic breast cancer. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract:
In this paper, the growth of a gas bubble in a supersaturated liquid is discussed for a constant and variable cases of surface tension effect. The mathematical model is solved analytically by using the method of Plesset and Zwick18 after modified it. The growth process is affected by: diffusion coefficient D, Jacob number Ja, surface tension σ, adjustment factor b and void fraction ϕ0. The famous formula of Plesset and Zwick is produced as a special case of the results at some values of the adjustment factors. Moreover, for some values of the adjustment factors, good approximation is obtained when a comparison between our results and the result that produced by Hashemi et al., 9 who solved the problem with the method of combining variables.

Abstract:
An interesting development in the last decade or so has been the increasing use that theoretical linguists have made of the notion ‘head’ – or rather, in order not to beg the question, of notions to which they have given the name ‘head’. The term has been around for a long time in linguistics, of course – for example Bloomfield uses it in relation to endocentric constructions (1933: 195), where the head is the daughter constituent which has the same distribution as the mother. Before that, Sweet had used ‘head-word’ to refer to any word to which another is subordinate (1891: 16, quoted in Matthews, 1981: 165). However, theoretical linguists made very little use of the term, or of the constellation of associated concepts, until quite recently. Its present status is due largely to work on X-bar syntax dating from Chomsky (1970), and especially to its recent manifestation in Generalised Phrase Structure Grammar (Gazdar & Pullum, 1981; Gazdar et al., 1985)–and even more so in the ‘head-driven’ variant of this (Pollard, 1985). But the improved status of ‘head’ is also due to some extent to the renewed interest in dependency grammar (Anderson, 1971, 1977; Matthews, 1981; Atkinson, et al, 1982; Hudson, 1984; Nichols, 1986). All these treatments agree not only in using the term ‘head’, but also in using it to refer to the element in some construction to which all the other parts of that construction are (in some sense) subordinate.
