The purpose of this research was investigate the possible places of friendship in the context of contemporary society's diagnosis made by polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman to map the impacts of the issue in the educational field. We start from the statement of the author in the end of book The Art of Life about the role of friendship, considering it as a safe place in the current world liquidity. The analysis of this statement leads us to the relationship between what the author called administered society - based by order and discipline - and liquid modern society, also called modernity without illusions, historical time marked by uncertainty which in turn produces a feeling of ambivalence. In this context, as a means of way of life, is built a corporate model based by consumer, marked by the logic of cost-benefit analysis that also affects human relationships. This process generates impacts on the ethical-political dimension, which is now characterized by individualism, removal from the public field and difficulty of building common issues to be recognized and addressed in the social field. It was observed in the work of Bauman that the difficulties of living with the other materialize the concept of stranger, which in turn, marks the distance of Difference. The diagnosis made by the author leads us to discussion about the relationships mediated by technology and the development of virtual communities that show and keeps the fragility of bonds in our current moment. Regarding the mapping of the concept of friendship, there is a relation with the concepts difference and love. The first of them, discuss the otherness and second one, the affective politics in contemporary society. Concerning education, friendship can become an important issue for teacher training - generally focused on technicality - and for the analysis... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

This dissertation aims to incorporate the liquid modernity concept to analyse the transformations in education when it passes to be held at distance. The concept of liquidity defined by the Polish author Zygmunt Bauman is applied in its essence nowadays, be in every day's life, at work, in the personal life of each one and interacts directly in the society. I cite how the public politics and your applicability are role models to the tendencies of this liquid modernity society. The methodology used in this dissertation is the bibliographic research, using as basis the publications of the above mentioned author, as well as, others related authors based on the concept of flexibility, individuality and fluidity. The education in liquid-modern times and their inferences along with young students, as well as the new models of teaching and learning reaching the student doesn't matter where he or she is. How is this new way of teaching works in nowadays? How to study by heart without being in a classroom, and attend all the demand the course offers? How to be qualified to the job market which is the main objective of economy today, where we all are treated as potential consumers and the students are goods to the consumer market.

This thesis analyse the biobibliography of Zygmunt Bauman, sociologist who made the idea of liquid modernity universal. Through the analysis of the phases of his thought, with the help of the interpreters of his work Aguiluz-Ibargüen (2009), Beilharz (2001), Smith (1999), Béjar (2005) and Tester (2004) proved to be essentially concerned thinker with the daily lives of people in their struggle for survival and defender of dialogue between the different. The possibility of an encounter between the author and other important educational thinkers such as Freire (1996), Pineau (2003) and Morin (2015) has been built from the observation that education faces institutional crisis due to the transformations in liquid modernity. From the identification with his thought was made reflection on the personal course from the primary school to the higher teaching highlighting vicissitudes and conquests. Personal interviews were conducted with Bauman that support the understanding of his teachings for the convergence between Social Sciences and Education
Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/53721.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: In contrast with the moral philosophy that morality is dependent on society preached by Durkheim and his disciples Bauman argues that the origin of morality cannot be found within social structures. According to Bauman certain social mechanisms hinder morality rather than promote it. He discusses two social structures to argue this point: socialization (within the modem condition) and sociality (within the postmodern condition). Within both structures, the Other is of functional value, and responsibility for this Other is denied. Within the structure of socialization responsibility is denied because of adiaphorization within the organization (certain actions are declared morally neutral), and also because ethical codes are adhered to. Within sociality responsibility never even arises and we find the postmodern version of adiaphorization. According to Bauman, morality originates with the personal responsibility for the Other. His argument is based on Levinas's version of who this Other is and what responsibility entails. According to Levinas, responsibility is non-reciprocal and asymmetrical. However, this relationship changes the moment that the third (or society) enters. At this moment we operate according to certain conditions and standards. Instead of placing the origin of morality in society, Bauman thus argues for a 'personal' morality. This leads to the problem that he does not provide enough space for morality within society. Without refuting his emphasis on a 'personal' morality, I focus on an alternative origin. If we agree that morality originates within the personal imagination, it does not only include Levinas's pre-ontological theory, but enlarges the idea of what morality encompasses to also leave space for morality within the the social sphere.

Full textThis doctoral research is focused on the Civilization Theory of Norbert Elias, analyzed and facing it with a number of authors and questions of XIX and XX centuries. Three authors compound the critical lecture of the civilization process which is a key notion of Elias: Friedrich Nietzsche, Immanuel Kant and Zygmunt Bauman. How we can explain the Nazis violence in confront of the civilization theory? Act of barbarism? Common madness? Unplanified process? Or as a rational but blind event of modernity?

Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate the reasons that lead teachers to experience the ill-being of teaching in general. The concept here construed is that the ill-being of teaching is inherent in the teaching profession in contemporaneity, and becomes apparent through the manifestation difficulties or impossibilities in dealing with the problematic issues always present in the school environment. The ill-being of teaching is expressed through reports of feelings of anguish, discomfort and powerlessness that are manifest in the tension generated by the needs of the teacher's intervention in situations that are present in their daily practices and the real possibilities of such intervention. The concept has been elaborated throughout the research process, through theoretical studies and the analysis of the data gathered. The field research was performed with the help of teachers in both City and State Public Schools and in Private Schools in Porto Alegre city. The research aimed at identifying the teachers' perception about the events that can lead to the feeling of illbeing when performing their daily routines at school. Some partial conclusions may be pointed out, such as that the feeling of ill-being is present both in public and private schools. The major factors responsible for the feeling of ill-being arise from the relationships between teacher and student, between the teacher and the school community, between the teachers and their peers, and the school management team. It is noteworthy to emphasize the feeling of ill-being related to the students that have been included in the schools after the universalization of compulsory education, and specially, to those students who do not appear motivated to learn. The feeling of loneliness that overpowers the teachers when dealing with the daily school problems has also been identified as one of the reasons of the feeling of ill-being of teaching. Through literature research and review, it has also been noticed that the feeling of illbeing of teaching does not present itself as a brand new issue, but it has acquired differentiated characteristics in the current moment, thus becoming a more complex phenomenon that is construed by multiple factors related to the transformation that the society and the teaching profession have been subject to. Starting from such analysis threshold, it has been possible to construe the premise that the feeling of illbeing of teaching represents more than a nuisance or a diffuse and fleeting feeling, or even a degenerative cycle of the teaching efficacy, but it ultimately represents a phenomenon that does not reside in the individual only, but rather resides in the relationships that are established within the school and within the society, and therefore may be referred to as ill-beings.
Casagrande, Eduardo Vignatti. ""Each one of us goes through life inside a bottle" : a reading of Brave new world in the light of Zygmunt Bauman's theory." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/141236.
Full textThe present thesis proposes a reading of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932) in the light of Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of Liquid Modernity. The plot of the novel unfolds in the futuristic London of the 26th century, in the year 2540 of our Common Era, or – in the narrative – in the year 632 AF (After Ford). Underlying the dystopian scenario of technological advancement and highly developed organization, however, the themes discussed in the novel actually address the circumstances of the time and place of its own production, the beginning of the 1930’s, in a context of developing industrialization, political tension, and economic crises. In this research, I pursue the answer to the following question: “In what ways does Huxley’s fiction anticipate the kind of society its readers would be living in at our present time, three quarters of a century after its publication?” With the help of Professor Zygmunt Bauman’s theories, I build my interpretation of the metaphors found in the novel, that prognosticate the current conditions of free-market capitalism, consumerism, programmed obsolescence, that determine the ethics, the aesthetics and the ways of thinking of our present times. Bauman’s assumptions concern the liquidity of the contemporary world, where nothing is meant to last long. This premise generates a number of consequences such as overconsumption, frail human bonds, superficial critical thought, and supremacy of online over factual contacts among people. The thesis is devised in three chapters. In the first, I contextualize the concept of dystopia. In the second, I bring the necessary contextualization about the time, the work and the author. In the third, I introduce Bauman’s concepts of solid modernity and liquid modernity and connect them with the study of Brave New World. Finally. In Chapter IV, I present my reading of the novel. At the end of the research, I expect to find the answers to the posed question by establishing critical interrelations between the fictional aspects of the novel and the social features ongoing in our present time.

Full textGrande Sertão: veredas occupies a place in the Brazilian Literary canon in which only other two or three novels could possibly occupy. Owing to this, a flood of comments and interpretations was produced concerning the book, however it has not always begun from the book itself to comprehend its possible meanings. This research study analyzes it in its diverse aspects (from character theme, going through time, space and narrator) in order to understand its dynamics, which is usually ambiguous and volatile. For this purpose, I use the concept of liquidity, created by Bauman (2001), which offers a reading from a modern point of view. This comment is aligned with other thoughts that remarked the reversibility and mixture of GSV, although it contrasts with some perspectives, which attempted to do a crystallized reading of the novel, and could not handle all the particularities.

Full textThe thesis studies the identities formed by the diaspora experience based on the specific case of the gauchos who have migrated from the state of Rio Grande do Sul in direction to the other Brazilian states in search for better life conditions and jobs. Its main issue focuses on the pedagogical role of the gauchismo as a substract for the construction of a diasporal gaucha identity. In order to develop this study, an analysis of the narratives gathered through semi-structured interviews with eleven people was done- gaucho migrants or directly involved in the process- in the cities of Tangará da Serra and Campo Novo do Parecis in Mato Grosso (cities with a large number of gaucho migration) and also some report excerpts presented on the RBSTV series “A Conquista do Oeste” from June to August 2004, having as theme – with a strong heroic accent- the gaucha diaspora to many Brazilian regions. The theoretical apport is found in the Cultural Studies field relating it to the narrative studies and the discursive gender and has been structured on the basis of some authors like Stuart Hall, Leonel Arfuch, Nestor Garcia Canclini, Zygmunt Bauman, Dominique Maigueneau, and Luiz Antônio Marcuschi among others. The developed analyses show the strength that the gauchismo-as a set of discursive and non-discursive practices which are based on what would be the gaucho’s costumes and habits, all of them having the gaucho from the Pampas as reference- and its pedagogy have in the sense of being present in the most diverse social spheres of the researched communities- especially in the school environment- being a fundamental element in the construction of the gauchos’ identity in a diasporal situation.

Full textPrinted media has been the central focus of this study, which has concentrated on both the analysis and discussion of magazines by a group of students of Social Communication. The research is an attempt to understand how an ambivalent phrase such as “showing attitude” – widely spread in media – has ended up uncovering fractures of a historically built concept such as “youth”. I have tried to analyze the importance of the phrase “showing attitude” in the sense that, through it, we can observe how features viewed as “immutable” that characterize youths have both changed and dissolved. Having the studies carried out by Zigmund Bauman as a privileged theoretical reference, the analyses have emphasized the strict relationship between young culture and globalization. Such articulation has allowed for structuring discussions about the concepts that emerged as central to this thesis: liquid youth, ambivalence and identity. Two sets of materials have constituted the corpus of analysis. Materials extracted from MTV Magazine (especially editorials and advertising campaigns) composed the first set. The second set resulted from discussions developed with two groups of Communication students of Centro Universitário Feevale. The investigation has evidenced the way an ambivalent phrase such as “showing attitude” has reached a remarkable locus in an equally ambivalent universe (that of young people) so as to take effect. It has also analyzed how and in which ways that phrase has found a singular and suggestive means, in the young universe, to be implemented.

The formation of the society, in a post-modern view, is marked by technological innovations, where the virtual media causes intense changes in communication patterns, forms of contacts and relationships. It causes the displacement of the subject to different environments, and it changes their actions to undefined places. The contacts with different areas of daily life - sports and virtual places - intensify changes in the moral subject’s perception. The main objective of this work was to analyze the moral perception of adolescent soccer athletes in different scenarios, and check how they perceive morality from the dilemmas they experience in the sports environment. Therefore, this study is a basic nature research, with qualitative approach and descriptive purpose. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews. They were conducted in the social networking site Facebook, with the participation of 13 athletes (aged 16 to 18 years) who play soccer in official championships. The procedures adopted for the analysis and the coding of the data were based on Thematic Analysis and Discourse Analysis. The results indicated that the athletes interviewed lived experiences mediated by both temporal and contextual differences, crossed by the actions of real subject leaders (coaches / managers), idealized leaders (mothers / fathers) and virtual ones (real / fake communities). They represent a different character for each environment - real or virtual - that carries specific subjectivities and leave marks on the constitution of the young athlete, consequently, on the contitution of the new moral subject. Thus, it is possible to conclude that the dialectical relationship of the athlete with different environments gives them the ability to relativize the actions without moral value. The gap between projections and interpretations of principles and values, which is differently manifested in each territory, leaves the athlete naked and without...

Full textThis study is devoted to analysing discourses on Indigenous folks who, circulating in different environments, are articulated in higher education students’ narratives. So I investigated narratives by 68 students from institutions located in Porto Alegre City in courses preparing future teachers. There were special moments for the production of narratives in four different groups, in which one of them was organised from an extension course, and the other three were designed in specific moments within the curriculum provided by teaching courses. I considered in this research the set of oral narratives produced in all four groups, the written texts and/or drawings by students and other materials brought to the meetings as well as my notes in a field notebook. The issues caused me to ponder during this investigative process were the following: which discourses are producing Indigenous folks in higher education students’ narratives? Which narratives get visibility for these students and which true effects are produced? Which information and knowledge sources Indigenous folks are named and depicted from in the school context? Which meanings are articulated in these narratives? Which social markers are used and which binary oppositions characterise the Indigenous folks? How students are embedded and how they position/are positioned in producing these narratives? My research is located in the poststructuralist Cultural Studies perspective, problematising meaning making practices which constitute and position differently subjects in relation to power/knowledge. In this approach, notions such as culture, language, subject, power, truth, identity and difference are very important. Authors like Michel Foucault, Stuart Hall, Homi Bhabha, Zygmunt Bauman, Jacques Derrida, Jorge Larrosa, Carlos Skliar, Núria Ferre, Kathryn Woodward, Rosa Hessel Silveira, Tomaz Tadeu da Silva, Marisa Costa, Alfredo Veiga-Neto, among others, from their productions in this field, hep us to analyse. Taking into consideration the set of narratives about Indigenous folks in the research, I have defined three analysis axes: discourses shaping the nationalities; discourses inventing subjects in school practices and discourses operating narrating strategies by stereotypes. These units have been used as meaning convergence points and have allowed analysing many practices anchored in particular regimes of truth. In the first axis, I have established relationships between ways students have recounted Indigenous folks and historical, literary, iconographical and didactical discourses. In this part of the work I am concerned with the effects from the articulation between Indigenous folks and the national identity. I have also discussed some displacements in nation meanings in the globalisation era. In the second axis, I have examined particular established practices in curriculum to approach the Indigenous theme. The analysed practices were those recounted by students, especially in primary school experiences, and I have been concerned with effects of these discourses, which provide a kind of visibility for Indigenous folks. What has attracted my attention was recurrence of certain narratives about the Indigenous Day celebration, an approach of a theme having particular contours in classroom, helping to highlight what should be recollected and what should remain in oblivion. In the final axis, I have discussed stereotype making as a discursive strategy, that is, as a way of knowledge and identification that provides a particular order, producing practices and positioning subjects. I have analysed effects of articulations established between the Indigenous and nature, and between Indigenous practices and the magician thought, approaching also ways to recount the Indigenous presence in the urban centres. The articulation made between the Indigenous and nature works as a kind of reading key, the Indigenous folks being recounted as natural inhabitants from the forest, a social and geographical place also producing a set of characteristics, attached to the body, provided as belonging to the Indigenous nature. It is possible to say that stereotyped narratives about Indigenous folks are capturing movements to make difference similar, stamp it on the bodies, blaming on the other for what is strange in him/her and establishing characteristics and social places. I argue that in inventing Indigenous and non-Indigenous subjects, multiple discourses work by entwining, strengthening, resisting and so shaping and inventing identities and differences in power and knowledge relationships. Analysing the students’ narratives allowed understanding identities and differences as productions daily working in the culture, in the entwining of different meaning makings, which invent, position and govern subjects. Meanings are made and established in daily trades, clashes and power games. In these practices, those who are recounted and those who recount are both constructed.

Abstract: The subject of this thesis is the transformation of the perception of the stranger in modem social theory during the 20th century. Current approaches about the stranger show that social exclusion, prejudice and intolerance are the main challenges for strangers in our contemporary world. By mapping approaches of authors like Georg Simmel, Alfred Schütz, Norbert Elias e Zygmunt Bauman the differences of the perception of the stranger could be demonstrated, reaching from approaches at the outset of the 20th century, in which the stranger occupied a place clearly separated from society, to approaches at the end of the 20th century, which recognize a certain generalisation of the condition of the stranger in our globalised world. Simultaneously, it could be observed that claims regarding the place of strangers in society have been more and more shifted from the question of equality of rights to the question of recognition and valuation of differences in an increasingly multicultural society
