Analyser af storbyen har i adskillige år udgjort et væsentligt element i Zygmunt Baumans sociologiske samtidsdiagnoser af den postmoderne eller flydende moderne verden. For Bauman udgør byen et mikrokosmos, hvori tidstendenser i særlig grad, og som forløbere for det øvrige samfunds og menneskehedens udvikling som helhed, kan skimtes. Det er også i byen, at mange af de særlige problemer og fænomener, der konfronterer og kendetegner vores samtid, forstørres og forstærkes. Storbylivet bliver således for Bauman en sociologisk optik, hvorigennem fænomener så som frygt, usikkerhed, fremmedhed (og fremmedhad), militarisering, privatisering og meningsudtømning i særlig udpræget grad kan aflæses.

W listopadzie 2015 roku Zygmunt Bauman obchodził 90. urodziny, będąc przy tym jak zwykle żywotnym, produktywnym i inteligentnym. Po ponad 70 opublikowanych książkach, z których każda analizuje jeden temat i otwiera drzwi na wszystkie strony, jego praca pozostaje istotnym punktem odniesienia w socjologii. Bauman nadal jest jednym z najbardziej elektryzujących socjologów, jednym z najbłyskotliwszych i najbardziej elastycznych myślicieli w swym pokoleniu. Wyjaśnia to, dlaczego niektórzy komentatorzy uznali go za jednego z najważniejszych żyjących socjologów. Gwoli ścisłości, jego prace poddane zostały również zdecydowanej krytyce. Po zarysowaniu rozumowania umniejszających jego dokonania w niniejszym artykule rozwija się myśl, że więcej ona mówi o stanie obecnej kultury w socjologii niż jakości pracy Baumana. Sposób praktykowania swego rzemiosła przez Baumana można uznać za osobliwy, nie jest on jednak w socjologii niczym nowym. Inni ważni socjologowie – Marks, Simmel, Weber – byli również nonkonformistami, lecz we współczesnym świecie Bauman jest wyjątkiem. Bauman, jak i inni ważni nonkonformiści, jest wytworem własnej niezwykłej biografii. Podobnie jak niektórzy z nich potrafił on wykorzystać podwójną wizję emigranta, która wyostrzyła jego osobistąświadomość wieloznaczności nowoczesności. W tekście ukazuje się, że socjologia w rękach Baumana tworzy odmienną mapę kognitywną tego, co zwykli ludzi uznają za rzeczywistość, zaś my wszyscy bierzemy za oczywistość. Punktem wyjścia jego pracy jest hermeneutyczne zrozumienie przygodności i wieloznaczności strumienia życia. Baumanowskie metafory opisujące tę nowoczesność są mesjanistyczne i ekologiczne: ratują pewną odmianę socjologii, która jest zagrożonym gatunkiem. Ostatnia część artykułu rzuca wyzwanie tendencji krytyków Baumana, wedle których ostateczną ochroną socjologii jako dyscypliny akademickiej leży poza władzą społeczną, znajdując się we władzy tego, co obiektywne. Bauman zajmuje odmienne stanowisko, jego socjologia bowiem rozpościera się między dwiema „rzeczywistościami” – hermeneutyczną socjologią i socjologiczną hermeneutyką. Wskutek nieustannego procesu wymiany między nimi, potrafi on „odkryć to, co istnieje”. Oto poczucie wolności, które promieniuje z dialektyki, która cechuje jego dzieło.

Abstract:
This review discusses Zygmunt Bauman’s Retrotopia, published shortly after the renowned sociologist’s death, in the light of his engagement with the thought of Pope Francis during the last years of his life. It traces some of the main themes of this engagement, and addresses its role and importance in the context of the book as well as in the aims of Bauman’s sociology as a whole. As the insecurities and anxieties of liquid modernity in our increasingly violent world lead many to give up on the effort of building a better future and turn towards the ‘retrotopia’ of an ideal past, a crucial sign of hope is found in the words of Pope Francis. In his efforts as a sociologist, Zygmunt Bauman seeks to redirect our gaze to the future and to engage in dialogue, understood as the art of living together.

Abstract:
The death of Zygmunt Bauman has called out various obituaries and responses. These often reflect the literature already existing on Bauman; some admiring, some puzzled, some begrudging. The sociological community seems divided between wanting to claim him as someone who helped keep us on the map or on social media, and pushing him away, as popularizer, journalist, or even charlatan. This article looks to interpreting this puzzle by way of assessing his legacy. It suggests that there is a logic or pattern to his works, in which signs of the times such as love, individualization, work or refugees are analysed symptomatically, in light of the overarching theory of liquid modernity.

Refugees from the violence of wars and the brutality of famished lives have knocked on other people's doors since the beginning of time. For the people behind the doors, these uninvited guests were always strangers, and strangers tend to generate fear and anxiety precisely because they are unknown. Today we find ourselves confronted with an extreme form of this historical dynamic, as our TV screens and newspapers are filled with accounts of a 'migration crisis', ostensibly overwhelming Europe and portending the collapse of our way of life. This anxious debate has given rise to a veritable 'moral panic' - a feeling of fear spreading among a large number of people that some evil threatens the well-being of society.

Abstract:
This paper offers a memoir of living with Zygmunt Bauman. It begins with the early encounter of Bauman and Aleksandra Kania in Warsaw in 1954, where both were Masters students working with the humanist Marxist Adam Schaff. Kania and Bauman followed their separate life paths for decades, though they were both postwar communists and reconstructionists. Much later, the loss of their partners led to union, in Leeds and across the globe in travel. This is a story of friendship and mutual enthusiasms, then intimacy between two working sociologists. There are also some apparent differences, as between the Lark and the Owl, or between Phosphorous and Hesperus. Life together leads especially to Italy, and to Pope Francis. This is a reflection on what Bauman called the art of life.

O presente trabalho propõe uma aproximação teórica entre o saber da psicanálise e a obra do sociólogo Zygmunt Bauman. Partindo das elaborações de Bauman acerca do conceito de amor líquido e seguindo as trilhas de Freud e Lacan, em suas construções teóricas sobre a dimensão e vicissitudes do significante amor, busca-se escutar e interrogar as ressonâncias do amor líquido nas subjetividades e nos laços sociais que se constituem na modernidade. A obesidade e o obeso são analisados como um fenômeno ambivalente, mas que contribui para compreensão de determinadas formas de exclusão social presentes na atualidade.
