গল্পকার রবীন্দ্রনাথ বাংলা ছোটগল্পের যে রাজপথ নির্মাণ করেছিলেন সে পথে গত একশ বছরে কখনই পদাতিকের অভাব হয়নি। তবু স্বৈরবৃত্ত কাল ও পরির্তমান জগতে বাংলা ছোটগল্পের পালাবদল ঘটে বারেবারেই। এই পালাবদলের কথা লিখেছিলাম কালের পুত্তলিকা : বাংলা ছোটগল্পের নব্বুই বছর ১৮৯১-১৯৮০ (১৯৮২) গ্রন্থে। কিন্তু গত দশ-বারো বছরে গল্পের স্রোত বহে চলেছে, নতুন নতুন বাঁক দেখা দিয়েছে সেই প্রবাহে, ভেসে উঠেছে জীবনের নতুন চর, শোনা গেছে নতুন মানুষের কণ্ঠস্বর। আজ আর বাংলা ছোটগল্পের প্রেরণাদাতা রবীন্দ্রনাথ নন, যদিও তিনি গঙ্গোত্রী। তাঁর গল্প থেকেই বাংলা ছোটগল্পের যাত্রা শুরু, তবু সেই প্রথম প্রেরণাদাতার শরণ ছেড়ে বাংলা গল্প অনেকদূর
