মধ্যযুগের শেষ কবি ভারতচন্দ্র রায় গুণাকর ‘বিদ্যাসুন্দর' অন্নদামঙ্গালো, উনবিংশ শতাব্দীর মধ্যভাগে প্যারীচাঁদ মিত্র ওরফে টেকচাঁদ ঠাকুর 'আলালের ঘরের দুলালে' প্রচুর আরবি ফার্সি শব্দের ব্যবহার করেছেন। আধুনিক কালে বাংলা কাব্যে নজরুলের পূর্বে সত্যেন্দ্রনাথ দত্ত, মোহিতলাল মজুমদারের হাতে আরবি-ফার্সি শব্দ ব্যবহারের নৈপুণ্য দৃষ্টিগোচর হয়। এঁরা নজরুলের পূর্বসুরি। এঁদের ভূমিকা পথিকৃতের বাংলা সাহিত্যে আরবি-ফার্সি শব্দ ব্যবহারের একটি ঐতিহাসিক পটভূমি আছে। প্রসঙ্গত সেটা শ্রমণ করা জরুরি। এদেশে ইংরেজ আগমণের পূর্বে রাজভাষা ছিল ফার্সি। বিদেশাগত রাজন্য, নৃপতি, অমাত্যবর্গ রাষ্ট্রীয় কাজে ব্যবহার করতেন ফার্সি, শাসকগো

জীবন রচনা করতে হয়, আর বিদ্যা অর্জন করতে হয়। বিদ্যার্জনে বিদ্যানুরাগ আবশ্যিক শর্ত জগৎ সংসারে বিদ্যাপথযাত্রীর সংখ্যা খুব কম। বেশির ভাগ মানুষ জীবনের সুখস্বাচ্ছন্দ্যকামনায় ও বিত্তবাসনায় মশগুল থাকে। তবু সংস্কৃতিবান ও রুচিশীল মানুষ, বুদ্ধিজীবী, সাহিত্যামোদী ও শিক্ষাদাতারা আছেন বলে বিদ্যাচর্চা অব্যাহত থাকে। প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক বিদ্যালাভের জন্য স্কুল-কলেজ- বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আছে। ঐসব কেন্দ্রে মেধাবী ছাত্রও জন্ম নেয় । কিন্তু মেধার কর্ষণ না হলে মেধা মরে যায়। সেজন্য দেখা যাবে শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানে খুব ভাল পাশ, কিন্তু পরবর্তী জীবনে বিদ্যার সঙ্গে সংযোগবিচ্ছিন্ন। এসব তথাকথিত মেধাবী জ্ঞানরাজ্যে কোন অবদান রাখতে পারে

বাংলা সাহিত্যের প্রাচীন নিদর্শন সাহিত্যিক মূল্যসমৃদ্ধ চর্যাপদে বৌদ্ধ সহজিয়াদের সাধনভজনের সঙ্গে সমন্বিত হয়েছে বাস্তব লোকজ জীবন ও উচ্চমানের গীতিময়তা। বড়ু চণ্ডীদাসের হাতে, শ্রীকৃষ্ণকীর্তন কাব্য, রাধাকৃষ্ণের লীলা ধর্মের মাহাত্ম্য ছাপিয়ে গোয়ালা সম্প্রদায়ের জীবনাচরণের ছবিতে পরিণত হয়েছে। মধ্যযুগের শ্রেষ্ঠ ও শেষ কবি ভারতচন্দ্রের ঈশ্বরী পাটনীর জীবনাভাস সে কালের লোকজ জীবনেরই বহিঃপ্রকাশ। আঠারো শতকের কবিগানে সমকালীন সমাজের তথা লোকজীবনের চিত্র না মিললেও সে কালের লোকজ রুচির পরিচয় তাতে ফুটে উঠেছে। অবশ্য পল্লীগীতিতে অথবা লোককাহিনীগুলোতে লোকজ জীবন ও মননের প্রতিফলন সব সময়ই চলছিল। মধ্যযুগে কবিতা ও গান
