This study examines the challenges faced by teachers in teaching English in sub-departments. A group of English department instructors with diverse teaching experiences in sub-departments was interviewed to gain insights into the difficulties they encounter. The analysis of the collected data revealed several key challenges, including large class sizes, multi-level classrooms, outdated and insufficient teaching materials, and limited instructional time for English courses. In these instructional notes, I share practical strategies for using ESL students’ first language as a resource for English language and literacy acquisition. These strategies emerged from a bilingual writing program that linked ESL and Spanish writing instruction at Bronx Community College (CUNY). In this article, we provide information to assist mathematics teacher educators in selecting classroom observation tools. We review three classroom observation tools: (1) the Reform-Oriented Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP); (2) the Instructional Quality Assessment (IQA) in Mathematics; and (3) the Mathematical Quality of Instruction (MQI).
