Streszczenie:
For the first time in the Russian historical and philosophical literature, the monograph attempts to comprehensively consider the philosophical views of the great playwright and thinker. Shakespeare is presented as a philosopher who considered in his masterpieces the relation of man to the world through a series of"borderline situations". Shakespeare not only anticipated the existentialist philosophers, but also appeared in his work as the greatest philosopher-anthropologist. He reflects on the essence of nature, space and time only in close connection with thoughts about human life.

Socrates has a unique position in the history of philosophy; had it not been for his influence on Plato, the whole development of Western philosophy might have been unimaginably different. Socrates wrote nothing himself so our knowledge of him is derived primarily from the engaging and infuriating figure who appears in Plato’s dialogues. Socrates: A Very Short Introduction explores Socrates’ life and his philosophical activity, before considering the responses his philosophical doctrines have evoked in the centuries since his death. It examines the relationship between the historical Socrates

This article addresses contemporary efforts to understand how the earliest practitioners of philosophy conceived of the philosophic life. It argues that, for Plato, the concept of bios was a central, animating, and structuring object of philosophic inquiry. Concentration on the imagery Plato employed to draw bios into the purview of philosophic contemplation and choice points to interpretative avenues that further the aim of treating the dialogues as complex, integrated wholes, and offers a new approach to the question of the status of image-making in them. The article concludes with thoughts

Philosophy: A Very Short Introduction looks at different schools of philosophy and classic philosophical problems, via readings from Plato, Hume, Hobbes, Descartes, and early Buddhist writers. Could a philosopher today be asking the same questions about the self as David Hume or the early Buddhists? What were Descartes and Nietzsche trying to prove? Most people have a philosophy, in terms of a general picture of what they think the world is like and what values they live by. Are we all philosophers, and why are we more comfortable with some philosophical ideas than others? How should we live?

Martin Heidegger was a captivating and controversial philosopher, known for his highly original and challenging philosophical concepts, as well as his association with – and sympathy for – the Nazi Party during World War II.Providing an introduction to both the man and his philosophy, this book is a concise, jargon-free journey through his life and thought. The publication of Heidegger’s private ‘Black Notebooks’ from the 1930s and 40s has led to renewed interest in the relationship between Heidegger’s philosophy and his political views and caused widespread confusion and condemnation. In Memory and the Political Art in Plato’s Statesman, Catherine Craig provides an original reading of Plato’s Statesman by bringing memory to the foreground. The dialogue itself explores various components of political memory, such as common speech, myths, and laws, and argues that these create a framework in which we live our political lives. Each of these aspects of political memory serves as an image to move the individual to rational inquiry. In this way, the dialogue suggests that political memory can serve as a starting point for philosophic recollection, allowing for a move from knowled

Ype de Boer invites you to rethink what you know about the philosophy of Giorgio Agamben. In a compelling and original argument, De Boer contends that, in the work of Agamben, ethics takes primacy over politics. Presenting a careful evaluation of Agamben’s overlooked contribution to ethics, this book explores his enigmatic yet central concept of the ‘happy life’. By reading Agamben’s philosophy in terms of a ‘poetico-philosophical experiment’ – a term coined by the Italian philosopher himself, and one through which he questions our very mode of existence – De Boer assesses the variety of ethic

This chapter reflects on a long philosophical career. According to the author, what attracted him to philosophy was in part precisely the idea that it wasn’t like getting a job or following a professional career. He thought of philosophy as something you studied just for its own sake. The author also shares his life as a graduate student at Harvard University, where he was influenced by the likes of Burton Dreben and Rogers Albritton. He went to Berkeley in 1961, and cites his erstwhile colleague Thompson Clarke as the one philosopher to whom he owes the most. The author concludes by asserting
