Sleep inertia is a measurable decline in cognition some people experience upon and following awakening. However, a systematic review of the current up to date evidence of audio as a countermeasure has yet to be reported. Thus, to amend this gap in knowledge, the authors conducted this systematic review beginning with searches in three primary databases for studies published between the inception date of each journal and the year 2020. Search terms contained “Sleep Inertia” paired with: “Sound”; “Noise”; “Music”; “Alarm”; “Alarm Tone”; “Alarm Sound”; “Alarm Noise”; “Alarm Music”; “Alarm Clock”; “Fire Alarm”, and “Smoke Alarm”. From 341 study results, twelve were identified for inclusion against a priori conditions. A structured narrative synthesis approach generated three key auditory stimulus themes-(i) Noise, (ii) Emergency tone sequences; Voice Alarms and Hybrids, and (iii) Music. Across themes, participants have been assessed in two situational categories: emergency, and non-emergency awakenings. The results indicate that for children awakening in emergency conditions, a low pitch alarm or voice warnings appear to be more effective in counteracting the effects of sleep inertia than alarms with higher frequencies. For adults abruptly awakened, there is insufficient evidence to support firm conclusions regarding alarm types and voice signals. Positive results have been found in non-emergency awakenings for musical treatments in adults who preferred popular music, and alarms with melodic qualities. The results observed reflect the potential for sound, voice, and musical treatments to counteract sleep inertia post-awakening, and emphasize the requirements for further research in this domain.

Rainfall-runoff relationships are widely used in many engineering hydrologic designs in urban and rural areas. Such relationships are obtained through the application of regression analysis in many studies. Unfortunately, in the classical regression approach to determine rainfall-runoff relationships, internal uncertainties are not taken explicitly into consideration. In this paper, an alternative to the classical regression approach is proposed through fuzzy system modeling. It is concluded that the fuzzy systems approach yields comparatively less relative error than a regression approach and, therefore, it is recommended for use in future. The application is presented for rainfall-runoff records at two sites near Istanbul, Turkey.

The present experiment used an intraindividual design to investigate the meaning and measurement of “good sleep.” Each of 16 subjects slept in an isolation unit according to a schedule (15 sleeps) designed to give variable quality of sleep. Self-rated sleep measures (from the Karolinska Sleep Diary) were obtained after each sleep and subjected to intraindividual regression analyses across time. Most subjective sleep measures showed a strong covariation across conditions. Subjective quality of sleep mainly involved variables of sleep continuity, in particular, perceived calmness of sleep and sleep efficiency. “Sleep quality,” “calm sleep,” “ease of falling asleep,” and ability to “sleep throughout” the time allotted strongly covaried and formed an index of sleep quality. Self-rated ease of awakening deviated from the general pattern and was associated with poor sleep quality. So was reported dreaming (related to awakenings). It was concluded that most subjective sleep measures tend to covary across conditions and that “good sleep” is mainly a question of sleep continuity.

The cortisol awakening response (CAR), a rapid cortisol rise in the morning after awakening, has been proposed to provide energy to cope with daily demands and suggested to be associated with brain functions. Electroencephalogram (EEG) asymmetry studies have implicated asymmetric cortical activation, especially in frontal cortex, in approach-withdrawal motivation. In this study, we examined the relationship between the CAR and lateralized cortical activity under rest in 55 university male students. Saliva samples were collected at 0, 15, 30 and 60 min after awakening on the two consecutive workdays. The lateralized cortical activity at frontocentral sites was examined by alpha asymmetry score. The results showed that a higher CAR was positively associated with alpha asymmetry score, which indicated that the higher CAR is linked with more left-sided cortical activity at frontocentral sites under resting state. This association still existed even after controlling psychological and sleep quality variables. These results suggested that appropriately mobilizing energy resource storage after awakening revealed as CAR might be associated with goal-directed approach tendencies before any eventual stressful situation, characteristic of more left than right resting-state frontocentral cortical activity.

In this paper, I investigate the phenomenology of awakening in Chinese Zen Buddhism. In this tradition, to awaken is to ‘see your true nature’. In particular, the two aspects of awakening are: (1) seeing that the nature of one’s self or mind is empty or void and (2) an erasing of the usual (though merely apparent) boundary between subject and object. In the early Zen tradition, there are many references to awakening as chopping off your head, not having eyes, nose and tongue, and seeing your ‘Original Face’. These references bear a remarkable resemblance to an approach to awakening developed by Douglas Harding. I will guide the reader through a series of Harding’s first-person experiments which investigate the gap where you cannot see your own head. I will endeavour to show that these methods, although radically different from traditional meditation techniques, result in an experience with striking similarities to Zen accounts of awakening, in particular, as experiencing oneself as empty or void and yet totally united with the given world. The repeatability and apparent reliability of these first-person methods opens up a class of awakening experience to empirical investigation and has the potential to provide new insights into nondual traditions.

The Islamic Awakening in Malaysia has brought about the consciousness of adopting and practicing the Islamic way of life. The process of implementing the principles of Islam is based on a gradual evolutionary process, rather than a drastic approach. Therefore, the selective implementation of Islamic law has been carried out relatively smoothly. For that reason, various institutions have been established ‒ such as, Islamic universities, Islamic banking and insurance companies, and other Islamic organizations and institutions. The case studies in this article related to Malaysia are: The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia – ABIM (Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement), and some Islamic institutions, which play important roles in the Islamic Awakening and solidarity in Malaysia. The PAS and ABIM are the prominent Islamic parties and movements, respectively, which can be regarded as the driving force behind the Islamic Awakening in Malaysia. Based on a tridimensional perspective ‒ that is, socioeconomic well-being and the strength of the expansion of Islamic education, and political stability ‒ this study highlights the accomplishment of Islamic Awakening in Malaysia.

In this thesis a phenomenological-hermeneutic method of inquiry, coupled with an embracement of ecological and transpersonal principles, was employed to delve into the paradoxical nature of the transformational quest to awaken to non-dual living. In particular there is a specific focus on the difficulty of embracing and living out a traditionally Eastern spiritual tradition for Western individuals. Analysis of interview transcripts with three participants, as well as, the author’s own journals, found four major “stages” in the journey to daily living in a non-dual state, with 13 sub-themes. These interpretive themes delineate the chronological path followed by the three co-researchers on their journeys into embracing non-dual living. The first major theme – heeding the call: honouring what is – outlines childhood experiences and answering a call to walk the path. The second theme– the unfolding process: pulling back the veil – illuminates the depth at which consciousness development can impact one’s lived experience. The third major theme – the wonderful land of oz: pointing to the answer within – explores the individuals’ experience with various teachers on the path of consciousness development. The fourth, and final, major theme – finding a lotus in the muddy waters of life – reveals the need for beings on the path to return to the particular moment to face unresolved attachments and demons. These findings suggest the significance of an integrative approach to therapeutic/counselling experience, an approach that includes Eastern practices and philosophies in the repertoire of counselling tools, to ensure the deepest possible understanding between, and connection within, the partners in the therapeutic alliance.

Chronic loneliness is predictive of poor health. Therefore, it is vital to identify psychological resources that combat loneliness and encourage social connection. However, loneliness is difficult to overcome, in part because it is associated with a maladaptive high avoidance and low approach motivation orientation that limits a person’s ability to connect with others. I hypothesized that nostalgia, a positive emotional experience that involves reflecting on cherished memories that are typically social in nature, is a psychological resource that regulates the tendency for lonely people to be less oriented toward social approach goals and motivation. I tested this hypothesis across 3 studies. Studies 1 and 2 examined whether nostalgia mitigates the inverse relation between loneliness and approach-related social goals, intentions, and behaviors. Studies 2 and 3, explored whether nostalgia mitigates the inverse relation between nostalgia and general approach/avoidance motivation. The results provided mixed support for the hypothesis. Nonetheless, there was preliminary evidence that feelings of nostalgia may weaken the relationship between loneliness and deficits in approach-related goals and intentions.

Aim: The aim of this thesis was to investigate the psychophysiological response to the dynamic working environment within a cohort of higher education employees via ambulatory assessment of psychosocial and physiological measures. Methods: Data was collected from two observational studies. Study one employed a cross-sectional design to investigate relationships between work-related psychosocial hazard, work-time heart rate variability, blood pressure, and the cortisol awakening response. Consideration was given to occupation type and acute work-related demand. Study two, a single-subject case study, employed an experience sampling methodology to peform a 24 hour assessment over 21 days. Workload, affect and demand were sampled during working hours, while heart rate variability and physical activity were continually sampled (24 hours), with salivary cortisol, being sampled at 3 time points during the awakening period. This study also investigated some of the methodological issues associated with ambulatory assessment of both heart rate variability and the cortisol awakening response. Findings: Chronic work-related demand was found to be positively associated with sympathetic dominance of the autonomic nervous system. Acute work-related demand was associated with ambulatory heart rate variability during work time and evening time whilst the rise in salivary free cortisol over the immediate post awakening period varies according to acute anticipatory demand and prior day's workload. Substantial intra--individual variation in both the cortisol awakening response and ambulatory heart variability was found to occur across work-days. Work time activity levels accounted for little of the variation in ambulatory heart rate variability and blood pressure. The cortisol awakening response was associated with both heart rate variability and nocturnal movement in the latter stage of sleep. Conclusion: Attending to the psychophysiological response to work at the individual level by means of ambulatory assessment appears to provide a useful means of assessing the balance between employee and environment. This could have significant implications for work design, employee selection and targeting of workplace interventions.

Kate Chopin''s The Awakening is interpreted as a significant feminist text by feminist advocators. The only available Chinese translation of the novel in Taiwan is translated by Yang Ing-mei and published by Fembooks Publishing House which is noted for its promotion of feminism. This project aims to adopt a non-feminist approach in the retranslation of the text to reverse the feminist elements. It is my intention to attract the attention of general readers who might not have special interests in feminism or who may not read Kate Chopin''s The Awakening as a feminist text. In this thesis, Yang''s translation is first analyzed. Feminist translation strategies proposed by Françoise Massardier-Kenney are used to analyze which feminist translation strategies Yang adopts to interpret the novel. It is found that Yang purposely emphasizes the novel as a feminist text through masculization of Edna, accentuation of Edna''s subjectivity, and the use of punctuation to highlight female subjectivities. Also, some flaws such as mistranslation, inappropriate wordings and typos in her translation are examined, and her elevated expressions are also discussed. In order to produce a translation for a broader scope of Chinese readers, Eugene Nida''s dynamic equivalence are then adopted as translation strategy. Current idiomatic usage and a non-feminist approach are used to translate this novel. In my interpretation, Edna is sensually awakened and she senses her unbeatable solitude rather than the desire for independence and freedom. By accentuating Edna''s sensual awakening and amplifying her sense of solitude, I attempt to view Edna as an ordinary woman and a unique human being. Finally, a small-scale survey is conducted to investigate the reader''s response through questionnaires with four open-ended questions to see how my translation is received by general readers. The ten respondents are five females and five males, whose age ranges from 23 to 32, with college or master’s degrees. The results show that the majority of the respondents prefer my non-feminist approach. Female respondents are able to better perceive Edna''s sense of solitude, while male ones are more aware of Edna''s sensuality presented in my translation. The result indicates that a non-feminist approach to translating this novel could provide readers with different interpretation to appreciate this novel.

The first and second chapters of this dissertation focus on the theoretical relation between dreams, history, and politics in the writings of Walter Benjamin, paying particular attention to The Arcades Project. These chapters are an intervention in contemporary debates whose main concern is the articulation of a historiography that takes into consideration the political climate of its discursive field. Chapters three and four aim at presenting two self-understood leftists approaches to politics. In these chapters I present the limitations of these contemporary approaches when compared to the possibilities that a Benjaminian project offers. More generally, the dissertation seeks to formulate a politics that is attentive and responsive to silenced voices insofar as these can be articulated historically. Hence, in order for such historical articulation to take place the dissertation proposes a philosophy of history that encompasses marginalized subjects. This attempts if is to provide such philosophy of history it has to respect difference critically, and if it aims to provide a political openness to depoliticized subjects, it must do so outside the parameters of liberalism. Hence, I argue only a dialectical approach to the articulation of history and politics can sustain a critical history attentive to historical otherness and a leftist politics that remains outside the sphere of liberalism.

The role of artful public pedagogy implemented by DAH Theatre in the formerly war affected region of Serbia is considered in both the exegesis and creative component, which comprise this thesis. The exploration draws on the teaching philosophies of Maxine Greene, whose expertise in the “awakening approach” is profiled. Greene advocated a “Wide Awakening” solution to challenges in modern day education. Following Greene, the study advocates the position that by challenging uncertainty and fear through the use of creative art, we can begin to engage in the process of assuaging past grievances. To explore Greene’s theory, a case study based on narrative monologues, testimonials, observations and researcher participation including DAH Theatre interviews with directors and founders of the DAH Theatre is presented. The exegesis includes a photojournalistic visual document to demonstrate the effectiveness of applying public pedagogy based on creative engagement. The research argument is that public art engagement can help shape rigid systems that undermine human rights and that Artful Public Pedagogy enables positive pathways that foster a more meaningful and democratically balanced social structure. The argument will be supported by a case study of how DAH Theatre employs Artful Public Pedagogy to draw together people with diverse experiences in order to address important cultural and social values. In doing this, DAH theatre invites its audience to engage with matters that are confronting to all involved. This process shares similarities with transformative justice objectives as it links to transformative leadership theory that underpins social justice: DAH Theatre provides leadership in political activism as it achieves peaceful outcomes by using art to empower and educate community.

AbstractNoise impact management goes hand in hand with the capability to predict the noise impact on exposed communities. Three tools to that purpose are presented in this chapter: the Noise Management Toolset (NMT), the Demo Virtual Community Tool (VCT) and Dynamic Noise Mapping. The NMT is a web-based tool giving stakeholders the opportunity to evaluate scenarios through not only noise exposure, but also noise impact, by introducing annoyance related metrics like the awakening index, with an easy-to-use interface. The VCT is the underlying research tool exploring and testing new indicators and options that might be of relevance to target audiences, such as land use planning information about location dependent activities or window insulation. The third approach, Dynamic Noise Mapping, adds the important aspect of population movement to classical noise mapping approaches where temporal changes of noise maps are tracked and included in noise exposure evaluation.

This chapter introduces the topic of the book, the “Awakening movement” (Erweckungsbewegung) in German Protestantism, by discussing the claims that were made by many German and other European church leaders and university professors in the mid-nineteenth century that a major religious awakening had occurred at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It then discusses the existing historiography of the Awakening movement, almost all of which has been written in German. Whereas the previous scholarship on the Awakening has been characterized by its focus on various specific regions of German-speaking Europe, this chapter concludes by outlining how this book adopts a thematic approach to the Awakening. This chapter describes how subsequent chapters will analyze the Awakening movement through how it appeared within four distinct areas of Protestant religious life: preaching, academic theology, organized evangelism, and caritative initiatives.

In this chapter, I take up dilemmas that today’s parents face in rearing young children. Throughout this book, we have touched on myriad forces that make contemporary parenting highly challenging. These include one-sided, contradictory messages in the parenting-advice literature; career pressures that impinge on parent involvement in children’s lives; abysmally weak American child-care services to assist employed parents in their child-rearing roles; cultural violence and excessive materialism permeating children’s worlds; schools with less than optimal conditions for children’s learning; and impediments to granting children with deficits and disabilities social experiences that maximize their development. Contemporary parents do not just find child rearing more difficult; they feel more uncertainty than their predecessors about whether and how to intervene in their children’s activities and behavior. In the pages that follow, I draw on major themes of this book—the power of adult warmth, appropriate expectations, narrative conversation, make-believe play, and teaching in the “zone”—to show how Vygotsky’s sociocultural approach can serve as a guide for resolving a great many child-rearing concerns. This chapter answers twenty questions drawn from a survey of over four hundred parents of 2- to 8-year-olds living in a Midwestern city with a population of one hundred thousand. In that survey, I asked parents to list any questions about young children’s development and learning that interested or worried them. The questions I answer here address issues that appeared most often in parents’ responses. Each represents a concern that surfaced in three or more parental replies. I intend these answers to parents’ questions to reflect a way of thinking about child rearing, not a set of recipes for dealing with specific events. When parents are familiar with principles that are grounded in contemporary theory and research on children’s development, they can better deal with the quandaries generated by the changing home, school, and community contexts in which today’s children grow up. Although adverse cultural trends have complicated and threatened good child rearing, parents—as agents of change, buffers against stressful life circumstances, and gatekeepers of learning opportunities—can do much to protect, restore, and reshape children’s experiences.

This chapter situates writing about the Welsh past produced between 1880 and 1920 in the contexts both of the increasing professionalization of historical study and of what contemporaries called a ‘national revival’ in Wales. The first part analyses two works aimed at a wide readership that combined a conventional focus on the origins of the Welsh and their history down to 1282 with a celebration of an enlightened modern Wales created since the eighteenth century: The Welsh People (1900) by John Rhys and David Brynmor-Jones, and O. M. Edwards’s Wales (1901). The second part examines specialized studies of aspects of medieval and early modern Welsh history that exemplified new scholarly approaches. This is followed, third, by an assessment of the work of J. E. Lloyd (1861–1947), widely regarded as having played a crucial part in establishing the history of Wales as a modern academic subject thanks especially to his seminal A History of Wales from the Earliest Times to the Edwardian Conquest (1911). It is argued that, while the work broke new ground through its combination of unprecedented critical rigour and analytical coherence, its ‘scientific’ approach served to legitimize long-held assumptions that the history of Wales was above all a story about the making of the Welsh and the medieval centuries in which they had come closest to enjoying political independence.

Chapter nine tackles the historical normative discussion about how Islam should relate to music. However, the approach is new as this historical footnote particularly focuses on popular music. Popular music is emphasised as three different domains. The music of people, the music of taverns by professional entertainers of the people, and then, eventually, the popular music marketed for mass consumption. The chapter focuses on the first two aspects as the discussion of mass consumption music is covered in chapter four. To make sense of the many diverging opinions preserved in historical texts, the chapter divides discourse into four positions: the writings of i) the philosophers ii) court intellectuals iii) Sufis and iv) legal scholars. By analysing the internal logic of respective position, the diversity of opinions is explained. In the chapter, the thoughts of the likes of al-Farabi (d. 950), ibn ‘Abd Rabbihi (d. 940), al-Ghazzali (d. 1111), and ibn Abi al-Dunya (d. 894) are discussed.

The introduction offers extended coverage of the history and influence of the Korean Zen master Chinul’s (1158-1210) Excerpts on Zen practice and its treatment of the “sudden/gradual issue” in East Asian Buddhism. The introduction describes how Chinul’s Excerpts serves as his “religious autobiography” and sets the agenda for the entire subsequent history of Korean Buddhist thought and practice. In Chinul’s analysis, enlightenment is actually both sudden and gradual: an initial sudden awakening to the numinous awareness that is inherent in all sentient beings, followed by gradual cultivation that removes the deep-seated habitual proclivities of thought and conduct that continue to manifest themselves even after awakening. Chinul’s preferred approach of “sudden awakening/gradual cultivation” becomes emblematic of the Korean Buddhist tradition. The introduction concludes with a discussion of the mature Korean seminary curriculum and the pivotal role Excerpts plays in that curriculum. Through the evidence marshalled, Chinul’s Excerpts emerges as the single most influential work written within the Korean Buddhist tradition.

Certain patterns have developed around meditation and enlightenment, or awakening, as many prefer to call it, in the American Insight network. Network here is defined as a loose affiliation of individuals and communities that prioritize Vipassana meditation as their central practice and trace their immediate Buddhist roots to Burmese and Thai Theravadin lineages. One current network emphasizes a more relational and integrative orientation toward meditation and draws significantly on psychotherapeutic discourse. The other stresses a more systematic and goal-oriented approach to awakening and relies heavily on traditional Buddhist canonical and commentarial literature. This chapter traces these currents, across both first- and second-generation convert teachers, highlighting the orientation toward meditation, the preferred style of practice, the gendering of meditation, the understanding of enlightenment, and the strategies of legitimation advanced within each before reflecting on their significance for the unfolding of Buddhist modernism in the United States.

Seeking consensuses from the public is difficult and this also applies to the heritage sector, particularly in heritage preservation. ‘What, why and how to preserve?’ are the core of debates in the field and the differences between points of views are basically due to the difference in valuation. In order to know everyone’s needs, views and expectations better and for sustainability, involving the community for preservation becomes fundamental. Education, an experience which does not only provide opportunities for enlightenments and widening horizons, but also introduce various concepts in terms of moral, ethical and social through systematic instructions. Having such great impact to community, promoting heritage education can be an effective approach awakening public consciousness on heritage preservation, and thus, enhancing people’s responsibility towards heritage, for both tangible and intangible, and developing a sustainable future for heritage through public engagement. However, it is necessary to understand the structure or the level of engagement prior setting the goal for heritage education. A model for classifying the level of engagement from performance is proposed for clarification and appraisal. This model is part of the research project of Community Engagement with Heritage in Macau which has an intention to examine its level of community engagement and give suggestions. This essay will first discuss community engagement, then classify the levels of engagement with models and lastly argue heritage education can elevate the level of community engagement which ultimately achieves the aim of heritage preservation.

Abstract The oil and gas industry is facing an increasingly complex world, characterized by the diffusion of digital emergence, sustainability awakening, and the seemingly continuous pandemic. To keep their competitive advantage, companies need to map their organizational strategy to prepare for what lies ahead. asset lifecycle management (ALM) is an integral part of oil and gas facilities and could not escape from this diffusion as well. Digital advancement in ALM has been proliferating for years as companies strive to catch up with current development while anticipating future requirements. The pandemic has massively accelerated the pace of digital advancement of the organization and changed the role of ALM in the organization and the way it's executed. Thus, this paper arises from the motivation to share knowledge in ALM digital efforts with companies of mutual background. In the paper, we will discuss the current drivers in asset management and how these drivers stir the transformation of asset integrity management (AIM) into ALM. The paper will also discuss how the holistic lifecycle approach and sustainability are retrofitted as part of the organization's transformation that is needed for long-term competitive advantage in the digital age. Finally, a fit-for-purpose roadmap for strategic ALM digitalization will be presented, along with the possibility for further research.

In terms of professional and personal maturity, it’s critical for a future specialist to consciously join health and fitness activities, awakening ‘subjectivity’ towards physical activity and physical exercises, since only then will it be possible to maintain health conditions at a level necessary for ensuring the adequate functioning in social and professional areas. The need to generate this competence in the process of learning in higher education served to form the need for the present study, the main objective of which was the following: to characterise the conditions necessary for the formation of the student’s personality, capable of conscious, responsible, competent behaviour in physical education and recreational activities. The main research methods were the theoretical analysis and synthesis of scientific and methodological literature, psychological testing, pedagogical experiments and methods of mathematical statistics. Conditions deemed as prerequisites for awaking ‘subjectivity’ in health and fitness activities are as follows: substitution of a methodologicalfunctional approach by a personally significant one; integrated use of fitness technologies in the process of physical education; the reorientation of students from passive exercise to active participation in the educational process; the organisation of subject-subject interaction between the participants of the educational process. The implementation of these conditions results in the transformation of students’ attitudes in educational and professional activity, the recognition of physical culture as a personally significant prerequisite for successful educational and professional activity.

Most of the statistical information in newspapers, magazines, business reports and other publications consists of data that are summarized and presented in a way that it is easy to read and understand. These summaries of data, which can be tabular, graphical or numerical are known as descriptive statistics. In addition, the presentations in tables and graphs to summarize data, numerical descriptive statistics are also used. Within this context, is developing a web page with a virtual laboratory of the themes of descriptive statistics, which proposes a study guide which aims to reorient and upgrade the approach that must address the study of statistical methods, awakening the topics that were developed so that cases raised to develop learning environments that would enable it to meet the knowledge and manipulate it. With this philosophy, applets, web sites with access to real data, software for free use and in general resources used in the web 2.0, referring to a second generation in the history of the web based on user communities, that foster collaboration and fast exchange of information between them. The technology allows us to enjoy the following principle of the use of the modern statistics. It is not as important to memorize formulas or perform complex arithmetic calculations by hand. One can instead focus on results with any type of technology, to give practical meaning to results through critical thinking. This has to make the students really have to make an effort to understand and interpret the results

“Education´s goal is the ability to master life with self-creative forces, in order to achieve something good and beautiful.” Götze, C. (1898). Das kind als Künstler Projects at Mexican schools of architecture often focus on conventional issues of dimension and function; in a country with the largest number of students in the architectural discipline there is an existing disinterest in the appropriation of knowledge, exploration of complexity, and expression of ideas. Such a disinterest calls for the evolution of architectural education. This research proposes it is possible to manage the creative forces of individuals. A working model composed of distinct components will be generated to stimulate areas related to artistic development. In preparation, essential components of the model have been extracted by analysis from the Bauhaus Preliminary Course developed by Johannes Itten, considering its influence on sequential tutors as well as its moment of historic implementation (1918-1923). The objective is to transform Itten´s pedagogy by means of a systemic design process focusing on the development of creative skills. The first methodological approach has been extracted from three of Itten’s thematic fields, each structured by a set of common elements: principle, objective, common material, exercises, and phases (Fig. 1). The sets are related according to their role in the development of talent as a means to discern and reveal artistic character: - BEING UNDER CONSTRUCTION: A physical-soul-spiritual unity that incorporates artistic education through exercises for awakening the body and intellectual harmonization (Fig. 1a). - BALANCED COMPOSITION: Refinement of the senses through intuitive analysis of artistic structures and a critical drawing of reality (Fig. 1b). - CONTRAST: The art of objectivity through the study of opposites: feeling-thinking, intuition-intellect, expression-construction (Fig. 1c). A responsible party, acting as structural element, directs the capacities stimulated within the group and materialized by cohesive exercises, guiding students to define an authentic trajectory: - FAMILIARIZATION: Understanding the bases. - EXPERIMENTATION: Articulation of new configurations. - APPROPRIATION: Creation from the unknown. - OPERATION: Execution in real-time. - REDIRECTION: Return to the origin to adjust and resume. By asserting the student is the center of his or her unique working model the implementation of this method in architectural studios allows for the assignment of any creative exercise and is suitable for all levels of investigation.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/IFDP.2016.3644

Since the mainstream racial awakening to pervasive and entrenched structural racism, many organizations have made commitments and adopted practices to increase workplace diversity, inclusion, and equity and embed these commitments in their organizational missions. A question often arises about how these concepts apply to research. This paper discusses how organizations can build on their specific commitments to diversity, inclusion, and equity by applying these principles in the research enterprise. RTI International’s framework for conducting equity-centered transformative research highlights how incorporating principles of diversity, inclusion, and equity requires a departure from mainstream practice because of historical and intentional exclusion of these principles. Drawing on methodologies of culturally responsive evaluation, research, and pedagogy; feminist, Indigenous, and critical methodologies; community-based participatory research; and theories of social transformation, liberation, and racial justice, this organizing framework illustrates what this departure requires and how research can serve liberation and social justice by transforming the researcher, the research content, and the day-to-day practice of conducting research. Centering the work of seminal scholars and practitioners of color in the field, this paper provides a holistic framework that incorporates various research approaches and paradigms intended to shift power to minoritized and marginalized communities to achieve social transformation through research.
