The date pineapple (Ananas comosus var. comosus) was introduced to Hawaii is not known, but its presence was first recorded in 1813. When American missionaries first arrived in Hawaii in 1820, pineapple was found growing wild and in gardens and small plots. The pineapple canning industry began in Baltimore in the mid-1860s and used fruit imported from the Caribbean. The export-based Hawaii pineapple industry was developed by an entrepreneurial group of California migrants who arrived in Hawaii in 1898 and the well-connected James D. Dole who arrived in 1899. The first profitable lot of canned pineapples was produced by Dole’s Hawaiian Pineapple Company in 1903 and the industry grew rapidly from there. Difficulties encountered in production and processing as the industry grew included low yields resulting from severe iron chlorosis and the use of low plant populations, mealybug wilt that devastated whole fields, inadequate machinery that limited cannery capacity, and lack of or poorly developed markets for the industry’s canned fruit. The major production problems were solved by public- and industry-funded research and innovation in the field and in the cannery. An industry association and industry-funded cooperative marketing efforts, initially led by James Dole, helped to expand the market for canned pineapple. Industry innovations were many and included: selection of ‘Smooth Cayenne’ pineapple as the most productive cultivar with the best quality fruit for canning; identification of the cause of manganese-induced iron chlorosis and its control with biweekly iron sulphate sprays; the use of mulch paper and the mechanization of its application, which increased yields by more than 20 t·ha−1; and the invention of the Ginaca peeler–corer machine, which greatly sped cannery throughput. Nematodes were also a serious problem for the industry, which resulted in the discovery and development of nematicides in the 1930s. As a result, by 1930 Hawaii led the world in the production of canned pineapple and had the world’s largest canneries. Production and sale of canned pineapple fell sharply during the world depression that began in 1929. However, the formation of an industry cartel to control output and marketing of canned pineapple, aggressive industry-funded marketing programs, and rapid growth in the volume of canned juice after 1933 restored industry profitability. Although the industry supported the world’s largest pineapple breeding program from 1914 until 1986, no cultivars emerged that replaced ‘Smooth Cayenne’ for canning. The lack of success was attributed in part to the superiority of ‘Smooth Cayenne’ in the field and the cannery, but also to the difficulty in producing defect-free progeny from crosses between highly heterozygous parents that were self-incompatible. Production of canned pineapple peaked in 1957, but the stage was set for the decline of the Hawaii industry when Del Monte, one of Hawaii’s largest canners, established the Philippine Packing Corporation (PPC) in the Philippines in the 1930s. The expansion of the PPC after World War II, followed by the establishment of plantations and canneries by Castle and Cooke’s Dole division in the Philippines in 1964 and in Thailand in 1972, sped the decline. The decline occurred mainly because foreign-based canneries had labor costs approximately one-tenth those in Hawaii. As the Hawaii canneries closed, the industry gradually shifted to the production of fresh pineapples. During that transition, the pineapple breeding program of the Pineapple Research Institute of Hawaii produced the MD-2 pineapple cultivar, now the world’s pre-eminent fresh fruit cultivar. However, the first and major beneficiary of that cultivar was Costa Rica where Del Monte had established a fresh fruit plantation in the late 1970s. Dole Food Co. and Maui Gold Pineapple Co. continue to produce fresh pineapples in Hawaii, mostly for the local market. All of the canneries eventually closed, the last one on Maui in 2007.

Over a period of 4 years, 770 low-acid canned food spoilage incidents were investigated to determine the cause of spoilage. In 27 of these, the cause was attributed to the growth of bacteria of the Clostridium genus that had entered the cans as a result of post-processing leakage. No correlations were found that might explain the occurrence of this mesophilic anaerobic type of spoilage. It appears to be a random event, probably linked to cannery insanitation. A variety of species was found, consisting of both proteolytic and non-proteolytic types. Clostridium botulinum was not isolated from any of the canned foods examined, nor were any of the samples found to contain botulinal toxin. Container leak test methodology and principles are discussed.

This dissertation examines the experiences of Indigenous women engaged in precarious and seasonal salmon cannery work. The dissertation argues that to grasp the nature of the women's work, which is exceedingly precarious, it is necessary to consider how it is shaped by a host of social, political, environmental and economic forces. In particular, the dissertation illustrates how provincial and Canadian neoliberal policies that developed during the past few decades have amplified the vulnerable status of Indigenous women cannery workers. Neoliberal discourses of active (worthy) and passive (unworthy) citizens embedded in social policies powerfully shape qualification requirements to programs such as Employment Insurance and Income Assistance while individualizing social inequalities experienced by Indigenous women. The dissertation employs both decolonizing and feminist methodologies to examine the everyday experiences of Indigenous women and to map out the social relations that shape their experience as precarious workers. Overall the dissertation contributes to making Indigenous women worker's lives more visible, to showing their significance in the salmon canning industry, to highlighting how their precarious labour undermines their well being and that of their families, and to demonstrating their resilience in the face of major obstacles.

L’assistance à la mobilité est un enjeu majeur, compte tenu de son importance dans l’augmentation de l’autonomie des personnes. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous nous intéressons au moyen d’assistance le plus commun qu’est la canne. Nous avons, dans un premier temps, analysé l’apport des cannes conventionnelles dans l’assistance à des marches perturbées.Cette analyse repose sur des caractérisations expérimentales ainsi que sur la modéli- sation et la simulation de la marche assistée. Nous avons ainsi mis en évidence l’aide au support du poids, au freinage et à la propulsion permises par le point d’appui supplé- mentaire fourni par la canne.Nous avons ensuite introduit le développement d’une canne robotique. Contrairement aux cannes robotiques existantes, notre prototype ne repose pas sur une base mobile statiquement stable. Pour plus de compacité et pour garder les attributs d’une canne conventionnelle, elle est composée d’un axe télescopique et d’une roue à son extrémité, tous deux motorisés. La commande de ce prototype est ensuite décrite. Elle permet de synchroniser les mouvements de la canne robotique avec le cycle de la marche. La canne suit ainsi activement le mouvement de la jambe “invalide” durant la phase de balancement et offre un point d’appui stable pendant la phase d’appui
Mobility assistance is major challenge since its importance in people autonomy enhancement.In this thesis, we focus on one of the most used assisting device which is the cane.Firstly, we have analyzed the supply provided by conventional canes during impaired gaits.This analyse is based on cane-assisted gait experimental characterizations and simulation.We have highlighted the weight-bearing, braking and propulsion assistance allowed by the additional contact point represented by the cane.Then, the development of a robotized cane is introduced. Unlike existing robotized canes, our prototype does not remain on a stable mobile platform.In order to reduce its volume and keep the shape of a conventional cane, the cane is composed of a telescopic shaft and a wheel at its tip, both motorized.The control of this cane is described. It allows to synchronize the cane motion with its user’s gait. The active cane follows the weakest leg during its swinging phase and offers a stable contact point during the stance phase

The purpose of this research was to determine whether or not canning fruit using fluoridated water made a difference in the fluoride contents of the juice and the pulp. Four cities in Utah were chosen. Two cities were fluoridated (Brigham City and Helper) and two cities were not fluoridated (North Ogden and Price). Three homes were chosen within each city, and three jars of canned fruit (one jar each of apricots, cherries, and peaches) were selected from each home. The fruit samples were freeze-dried, and then the fluoride was measured with a fluoride ion electrode. A difference was found in the fluoride level of the juice and the pulp when canning using fluoridated water. However, this difference was not statistically significant and did not greatly contribute to the overall dietary fluoride intake.

Electric machines are being deployed in industrial applications where previously only mechanical systems were considered, as environmental concerns from burning fossil fuels and energy costs are becoming a more dominant factor in system design considerations. Electric machines offer greater operational flexibility and typically higher efficiencies. There has therefore been a growing demand to develop electric machines to replace traditional mechanical systems in a number of industrial applications. One such suitable electric machine topology is the 'direct-drive' machine. These machines can be used where implementation does not require a high operating speed, therefore eliminating the necessity of a gearbox. Furthermore, direct-drive machines offer a number of advantages including reductions in through-life costs, noise and vibration, and overall system volume. This thesis explores the development of direct-drive rim-driven machines, constructed by integrating a propeller with the electric machine that is driving it, by mounting the machine directly around the outside of the propeller. A novel machine topology was developed by integrating a conducting-can onto the rotor structure capable of producing induction torque, to create a motor that can start directly from the main electric supply. This eliminated the need for a power electronic converter, gearbox and complicated drive shafts arrangement, for use in applications where only a low duty cycle of operation was required such as secondary propulsion systems for marine applications or where safety and reliability is of significant importance. A number of other industrial applications that may benefit from this canned rim-driven topology were also identified including seal-less pumps and 'run-of-the-river' generators. Permanent-magnet and induction motor topologies operating in fluid environments were investigated, using finite element analysis and thermal analysis techniques, to examine and optimise the design of the rim-driven topology for a specific operational requirement, in each industrial application area identified. A 30 kW canned line-start rim-drive induction motor was designed and developed for use as a bi-directional thruster on-board a tidal stream turbine. A novel induction motor topology was developed utilising only a conducting-can on the rotor, which eliminated the need for a traditional squirrel-cage, due to the ratio of the relatively large mean air-gap diameter to the small output power requirement; creating a simple yet reliable direct-drive canned induction motor. The design of this motor was manufactured and successfully tested to validate the design process.

American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the U.S. roughly 2,300 air miles southwest of Honolulu and about 2,700 miles north of Australia. The largest and most populated island in American Samoa is Tutuila, which is located the territory’s historic capitol of Pago Pago. The territory is home to the world’s largest tuna cannery. Population growth has been dramatic and the island’s energy costs have increased substantially in recent years. The American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA) is responsible for solid waste collection and disposal in the territory with landfilling being the primary mode of waste disposal. However, limited available land on the main island due to volcanic topography limits the long-term use of landfilling as the island’s sole waste management tool. The relative isolated location of American Samoa and the instability of world oil markets have prompted ASPA to look at more environmentally and economically sustainable means of solid waste management. As an outgrowth of its research, ASPA submitted and received a technical assistance grant from the U.s. Department of the Interior to conduct an extensive waste composition study and EfW feasibility study to examine the advantages and disadvantages of efW for American Samoa. The results of these studies have been completed by SCS on behalf of ASPA, which is currently taking steps to permit and procure a 2.0 megawatt, modular efW facility that will go online in 2012 as part of a public private partnership. The lessons learned by SCs and ASPA during the course of the investigations are illustrative of the types of long-term, waste management and energy decision-making that many small communities will have to undertake to attain viable and sustainable alternatives.

This research studies a make-to-order production planning in a canned pineapple industry. Pineapple is a seasonal perishable fruit. Thus, the cost of fresh pineapple which is the main raw material in canned pineapple is inexpensive during its season. The color of the pineapple also determines the price of the canned pineapple. However, the availability of different colors (called “choice” and “standard”) is dependent. Specifically, if the ratio of the choice color is more, the ratio of the other color is less. There are several costs involve such as fresh pineapple cost, can cost, sugar cost, water cost, labor cost, energy cost, and inventory cost. The problem is formulated as a mathematical model to maximize the total profit over four-months planning horizon. Two supply uncertainty cases are tested which are low and high ratios of the choice color. The results show that the profit depends on available color ratios of the pineapple. The production planning is best if it matches with the availability of the color ratios. In certain months, some fresh pineapple purchased exceed the need of the production because of the dependency of the two colors. Reactor coolant pump is one of the key equipment of the coolant loop in a pressurized water reactor system. Its safety relies on the characteristics of the rotordynamic system. For a canned motor reactor coolant pump, the liquid coolant fills up the clearance between the metal shields of the rotor and stator inside the canned motor, forming a clearance flow. The fluid induced forces of the clearance flow in canned motor reactor coolant pump and their effects on the rotordynamic characteristics of the pump are experimentally analyzed in this work. A vertical experiment rig has been established for the purpose of measuring the fluid induced forces of the clearance. Fluid induced forces of clearance flow with various whirl frequencies and various boundary conditions are obtained through the experiment. Results show that clearance flow brings large mass coefficient into the rotordynamic system and the direct stiffness coefficient is negative under the normal operating condition. The rotordynamic stability of canned motor reactor coolant pump does not deteriorate despite the existence of significant cross-coupled stiffness coefficient from the fluid induced forces of the clearance flow.

As significant fluid machinery, canned motor pumps are widely applied in industrial field. The typical characteristic of canned motor pump is that the fluid comes into the narrow gap and affects the performance of canned motor. The coolant flow in the narrow annular gap between rotor and stator cans belongs to Taylor-Couette-Poiseuille flow which has been investigated for a long time while the thermal design is a key function of internal narrow gap annular flow of canned motor. However, the temperature distribution prediction of canned motor deviates from the experiments, especially in the high-capacity canned motor due to the large shear rate of fluid and eddy-current loss of motor’s can. According to the researcher’s work, the significant work lies in the heat transfer coefficient that different researchers give various numerical prediction and experimental measurement. It brings big challenge in thermal design of high-capacity canned motor pump. In this paper, the author focuses on the reason why the heat transfer coefficient is remarkably lower than that other’s forecast. In this paper, the heat transfer behavior of the boundary layer near surfaces in the annular flow is investigated by using the commercial fluid dynamic (CFD) method. Firstly, the Naiver-Stocks (N-S) equations and energy conservation equation are employed for modeling the flow and heat transfer behavior, and the k-ω turbulent model is used for solving the flow control equations. Secondly, the fluid domain is described by a simplified geometrical model: two concentric cylinders with finite gap length. Thirdly, numerical approach is used to analyze the subject with tools of Solidworks, ICEM CFD and Ansys Fluent. Two parameters are analyzed in the research, namely the rotating speed and the wall heat flux, without considering the fluid viscous dissipation and thermal contact resistance. Numerical simulation results indicate that Taylor vortex exists in the flow regime, and the temperature distribution is affected by both the rotating speed and the wall heat flux, named thermal barrier effect under large heat flux condition. The thermal barrier effect lies in that the temperature gradient of interface decreases compared to the peak value of temperature gradient near the surface, so that the heat transfer coefficient is reduced remarkably. This effect leads to the temperature prediction deviates from the experiment measurement.

The article raises the question of economic rationale of including Latvian sprat to the protected geographical identification (GI) register of the European Commission. GIs aims to address the situation of asymmetric information on the market specifically a situation when high-quality foodstuffs customers’ loyalty and trust can be jeopardized by presence of sub-optimal products. One of the means to help customers and producers confront the information asymmetries and possess more control over the situation is the institute of trademarking. GIs can be understood as a type of trademarking, however, since the GI does not belong to a single company but rather to a product and is used by many companies simultaneously, the GIs are rather seen as a type of collective monopoly right reinforcing collective responsibility of producers. The aim of the current research to evaluate theoretical and economic background of GI-labelling and possibilities for GIs introduction to canned sprat industry in Latvia as well as sketch the relevance of GI introduction to Latvian canned sprats. According to the economic theory, a number of acute problems in the canned sprat industry in Latvia can be resolved by participating in the GI scheme and protecting the traditional producing of Latvian sprat at the European level. Latvian canned sprats is one of the food stuffs that would benefit from the certification both in the local market and exported. The key structural events to be mobilized to realize the potential of a GI-labelling introduction to the canned sprats sector in Latvia are indicated in the article along with the GIs theoretic introduction and discussion.

Abstract The oil and gas industry continues to push toward subsea pumping technologies that minimize required support systems and increase system reliability. Canned motor technology has been applied successfully in other applications to achieve similar objectives including driving a subsea twin-screw pump. Applied subsea, canned motors eliminate the need for any barrier fluids within the motor, the myriad of systems and complexities necessary to store and replenish these fluids, and the mechanical shaft seals required to prevent the leaking and/or contamination of these fluids within the motors. As a direct adaptation of proven applications, see Figure 1, subsea water treatment is ideal for canned motor technology. Therefore, a development has been initiated and environment qualification testing of the first truly barrier fluidless, sealless subsea pump solution is complete. This purpose of the paper is to highlight the novel elements of this technology, review the system configuration, and document the system performance in accordance with the TRL 4 qualification initiative.
