Abstract Since March 2014, a sustainably focused community located on a 0.7 hectares site in Portland, Oregon, USA, has been undertaking an experimental composting toilet system modeled after the Water Efficiency and Sanitation Standard (WE-Stand) set out by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO). This system collects urine and hot composts human excreta in a dry-composting toilet system for eventual use on the community's organic gardens. The system design reduces the need to access municipal water, sewer, and electrical infrastructure, enhancing emergency preparedness. It conserves an otherwise wasted nutrient flow, and safely produces a valuable compost. The system consists of urine collection vessels, multiple portable collection containers for excreta, toilet paper, and additive, and a compost processor. Urine diversion has allowed the community to reclaim nitrogen and other nutrients otherwise lost in conventional sewage systems, resulting in large savings of potable water and significant carbon sequestration via topsoil creation. Logs showed thermophilic compost temperatures. Compost and urine pathogen testing met American National Standards Institute and National Sanitation Foundation Standard 41 requirements.

Анотація:
Abstract The process of composting sugarcane residue by new bio-decomposer consortium formula contain specific microbes with different functions such as ligninolytic and cellulolytic microbes can improve the quality of agricultural waste. These bacteria have the potential to enhance sugarcane litter and other sugarcane residues. The fermentation process led to the C/N ratio of compost serves as a reference for the effectiveness of the decomposition process by bacteria. The research was designed as an alternative to producing organic fertilizers by using four bio-decomposer consortium formulas as ISAFCRI collection and EM4 as commercial bio-decomposer. The physicochemical characterization of 5 composts, including the C/N ratio of compost, is below 12-17, macroelements N, P, K available in compost are relatively high compared to the minimum requirement of SNI. The compost 5 with EM4 bio-decomposer appeared to have lower nutrient yields than compost using other decomposers. Compost 1 with formula one, which contains a consortium of lignocellulolytic bacteria, has excellent potential to be developed as a new bio-decomposer formula for processing sugarcane waste. The pilot test has shown that varieties of composts and organic fertilizers can be made from a mixture of sugarcane residue.

In this study aims to recycle farmers market and garden waste into compost and bring it back to soil as a useful and valuable organic fertilizer thanks to natural processes in Seyhan Region. With the compost production, it is aimed to promote both soil improvement and organic fertilizer use and recycling. The compost has many benefits for agricultural activities. This review, the main challenges of the process of organic waste compost and explores the crucial aspects related to the quality of the produced the importance of compost. Although the importance of compost production is known, the importance of composting and more information are needed. Therefore, in this study, innovative approaches with different methods have been investigated. Environmental and biodiversity impacts related to organic waste composting detailed in this study. This study investigated the application of blue-green algae to enhance the quality of composts composed from multiple organic waste. This research provides an innovative method for using algae the compost products. The importance of using algae in order to achieve rapid results in innovative and sustainable agriculture areas in composting was explained. A pilot project application was established to optimize organic waste collection and composting for agriculture in Compost Production facility in Seyhan Municipality. In addition, also in this study contributed to the environmental and biodiversity awareness and zero waste projects research of applicability. Studying areas should be created for composting in municipalities.

Preparators and taxidermists spend a great deal of time preparing osteological materials before these can enter collections. The different preparation methods can have variable results and even the type of specimen being prepared can impact on its overall finish after preparation. This can often result in a lot of extra preparation work to finish or tidy up specimens. Common methods for preparation include maceration, dermestid beetles, burial and composting. Most techniques require initial preparation (flensing) and subsequent work that often introduces more chemicals or handling of the specimens. Each method has uncontrolled elements and difficulties. Dermestids are sometimes temperamental in their preferences and require a lot of care to maintain. Maceration often involves additives like detergents or follow-up chemical treatments. Burial is often highly uncontrolled, leading to problems of drainage and the build-up of unwanted pH environments. Marine mammals or larger specimens present further challenges, being oily or too large to process onsite. When these types of specimens are buried they must often be further processed before entering the collections. All of these different processes can have an impact on the long-term preservation of the individual specimens, which is a concern for conservators. A separate project was set up to investigate how illegally traded bones (tiger in this case) are affected by various environmental (“preparation”) conditions. A series of stations was set up simulating different environments, one being a compost. This started off further investigations into composting as a viable routine preparation technique. We will contrast the recent recovery of three buried beaked whales with composting trials of a frozen unflensed beaked whale skull and a small whole dolphin. The composting techniques seem to allow greater control, and produced excellent results. Our visual results will be complemented with data from the compost site, such as temperature loggers. This is currently an ongoing investigation and it is hoped that further data will be collected over time, such as pH testing of soil samples from burial sites and compost sites. Data from two trials at the Australian Museum – a larger outdoor controlled compost heap and smaller plastic tub composts – will be presented. This project highlights the importance of data collection during specimen preparation. The pathways a specimen goes through before entering a collection have an impact on its long-term preservation and research potential. These data need to be retained.

O composto químico inédito utilizado neste trabalho foi o 1,3-bis(2-metoxi-4-nitrofenil)triazeno pertencente à classe dos triazenos, espécie química envolvendo cadeias abertas com três ou mais átomos de nitrogênio ligados em sequência, caracterizados pelo grupo diazoamínico. Muitos triazenos têm atividade biológica, uma vez que as aminas presentes nestes compostos têm locais específicos de ação nas membranas celulares e a capacidade de formar ligações de hidrogênio. Os triazenos são amplamente utilizados em sínteses experimentais de novos compostos. Este trabalho descreve a avaliação da atividade biológica e o potencial antimicrobiano do triazeno 1,3-bis(2-metoxi-4-nitrofenil)triazeno (TZC). Foram realizados testes das atividades antimicrobianas do TZC, mediante avaliação da sensibilidade da solução do composto frente às bactérias ATCC´s (American Type Culture Collection, ATCC) e isolados clínicos, aplicando-se ensaios microbiológicos padronizados. O potencial antimicrobiano foi determinado pela Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM), exibindo resultados promissores, com atividade diante de bactérias Gram-positivas e Gram-negativas, com baixos valores de CIM. Os resultados mostraram a potencialidade do TZC, frente à resistência das cepas bacterianas selecionadas.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Triazeno, Atividade antimicrobiana, Gram-positivos e Gram-negativos.

The paper is devoted to the study of the toxicity of composts based on sewage sludge in relation to radish seeds and seedlings, as well as earthworms. The most phytotoxic are the substrates of variant b - with the microbiological preparation Tamir and worms, the substrates of variant b - with Tamir (without worms) were less toxic, a weak toxic and even stimulating effect on the growth of radish roots was detected in the substrates of variant a - control, without worms and Tamir. Due to the high phytotoxicity, compost № 1, № 3, № 5 and № 6 are not recommended for use in crop production, and substrates № 2(a) and № 4(a) in connection with the identified stimulating effect can be recommended. Phytotoxicity of substrates may be related to their composition: food waste is present in the composition of toxic composts, and this component is not present in non-toxic composts. The decrease and increase in the biomass of worms in composts does not correlate with the revealed phytotoxicity and the composition of their mycobiota. Due to the low species diversity and abundance of cosmopolitan, toxin-forming and conditionally pathogenic fungal species in the structure of mycocoenoses of bioconversion substrates, it can be assumed that their maturation time is insufficient. With an increase in the incubation time of composts of a similar composition for more than 30 days, we predict a change in the structure of their mycocoenoses towards an increase in the species diversity of non-toxic saprotrophs, as well as cellulolytics of the genera Trichoderma and Chaetomium . The prospect of further research in this direction is the compilation of a collection of micromycetes of composts.

ABSTRACT Elucidating the mineralization of organic composts makes it possible to understand the release of nutrients to plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the mineralization of nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) from organic compost from residues of the production and slaughter of small ruminants, applied on a Neossolo Flúvico (Fluvents). The compost consists of remains of grass (forage), manure and slaughter residues such as blood, viscera and the carcass of goats and sheep. Under laboratory conditions, two experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design, considering the doses of organic compost at the following levels: zero; 3.75, 7.5, 15 and 30 Mg ha-1. For the N and C mineralization tests, 11 and 32 collection times (sampling periods) were evaluated, respectively. Inorganic N content (ammonium and nitrate) was measured in the N mineralization test, and CO2-C concentration was quantified in the C mineralization test. The largest increments between the applied doses of organic compost from residues of the production and slaughter of small ruminants were 70% and 69% for potentially mineralizable N and C, with amounts of 7.5 and 30 Mg ha-1 at doses of 3.75 and 7.5 Mg ha-1, respectively. Organic C and N from residues of the production and slaughter of small ruminants are rapidly mineralized in the soil (up to 45 days) due to their low C/N ratio.

The paper discusses the use of non-traditional types of organic waste in vermicomposting in greenhouses on the territory of the middle taiga forest zone of Western Siberia. Experimental studies were carried out in the laboratories of the scientific and educational center and the center for collective use of the Institute of Natural and Technical Sciences of Surgut State University in 20012020. The main objects of the study were brewers grains, waste from the production of the Kristal brewing company in Surgut and wastewater sludge from the treatment facilities of the Gorvodokanal in Surgut. Additionally, the composition of complex composts included sand, office waste paper, waste coffee, food waste, leaf and grass litter, bird droppings and the microbiological additive Tamir. The compost worms of the Eisenia foetida Prospector species were used as vermiculture. 10 juveniles were launched in the first series of experiments and 50 juvenile worms were launched in the second series. The resulting vermicomposting is more effective in quality than the original substrates. The use of the hybrid Prospector can be effectively used in the disposal of non-traditional organic waste. Complex composts mature more efficiently when microbiological additives are added. In the studied substrates the content of heavy metals was reduced to MPC norms.

Les jardins familiaux ont souvent été installés sur des sols urbains sans évaluation préalable du risque sanitaire. Le diagnostic de contamination du sol par des éléments trace comme le plomb (Pb) peut compromettre la poursuite du jardinage. Pour éviter un changement d’usage, l’apport au sol de compost industriel peut être efficace mais le potentiel des composts autoproduits par les jardiniers eux-mêmes doit être évalué. Ce travail de thèse a eu pour premier objectif d’analyser les pratiques de compostage dans les jardins familiaux et sélectionner des composts autoproduits différents en termes de propriétés biochimiques et de contenu en éléments trace. Les pratiques de compostage et la qualité des composts sont très variables. Les composts autoproduits au jardin (domestiques)sont généralement pauvres en matière organique et parfois contaminéscontrairement aux composts autoproduits en pied d’immeuble ou en restauration (collectifs) également utilisés au jardin. Le second objectif a été d’évaluer le risque sanitaire potentiel lié à la consommation de légumes de jardins familiaux modérément contaminés en Pb (100-200 mg.kg-1) amendés avec des composts autoproduits. Pour tenter d’améliorer la remédiation, du biochar a aussi été introduit. Une alimentation composée essentiellement des légumes autoproduits au jardin ne présenterait pas de risque sanitaire mais l’apport de composts autoproduits à une dose élevée (10-20 kg.m-2) a pu augmenter la biodisponibilité de As dans des sols de jardins familiaux. L’apport combiné d’un compost autoproduit et d’un biochar a toutefois limité les transferts de As et de Pb tout en augmentant la biomasse des légumes autoproduits
For some time, allotment gardens have often been established on urban soils without prior health risk assessment. Soil analysis revealing contamination by trace elements such as lead (Pb) may now compromise the practice of gardening. To prevent a restriction or change of soil use, the introduction of industrial compost to the soil can be efficient, but the potential of composts self-produced by the gardeners themselves must be evaluated. The first objective of this thesis was to analyze composting practices in allotment gardens and select self-produced composts with different biochemical properties and trace element content. The composting practices and the quality of these composts are very variable. Composts self-produced in the garden (home composts) are generally poor in organic matter and sometimes contaminated,contrary to composts self-produced at the foot of buildings or in restoration (community composts) also used in gardens. The second objective was to assess the potential health risk of consuming vegetables from allotment gardens moderately contaminated with Pb (100 - 200 mg.kg-1) amended with self-produced composts. In an attempt to improve remediation, biochar was also introduced into the soil. A diet composed essentially of self-produced vegetables in the garden would not present a health risk, but the addition of self-produced composts at a high dose (10-20 kg.m-2) could increase the bioavailability of As in allotment garden soils. In contrast, the combined addition of self-produced compost and biochar limited the transfer of both As and Pb while simultaneously increasing the biomass of self-produced vegetables

Turning Compost is a collection of forty poems, two of which, Seven Kakhaiku and Tres Troubled Triolets, are multiple poems intended to be read as units. The poems have been ordered so that there is a flow of connected or contrasting ideas from poem to poem, therefore it is recommended that they be read in the order presented. The themes covered by the poems are varied, but principal amongst them are memory, nature, dreams and symbols, family and friends, and the search for meaning; they appear in roughly that order. Death, and its challenges to meaning, is a theme which recurs throughout the collection, something which is reflected in the collection's title which is borrowed from one of the poems. Included is one poem, Pig People, which was written specifically for children. The poems are written in a variety of forms, evincing the poet's conscious rejection of stylistic consistency as a goal in developing his voice.

L'objectif de cette thèse est de faciliter la conception et le déploiement d'applications distribuées sur la Grille, en utilisant une approche orientée composants. Les problématiques du calcul sur grilles abordées dans notre proposition sont : la complexité de conception, le déploiement, la flexibilité et la performance. Nous proposons et justifions un modèle de composants et son implantation. Le modèle proposé repose sur le modèle de composants Fractal et sur le modèle des objets actifs. Il bénéficie d'une part, de la structure hiérarchique et de la définition précise du modèle Fractal, et d'autre part, de l'identification des composants comme activités configurables. Nous proposons un modèle de déploiement et nous spécifions un ensemble de primitives pour les communications collectives, grâce à la définition d'interfaces collectives. Les interfaces collectives permettent de gérer la distribution des données, le parallélisme et la synchronisation des invocations.
Nous avons développé une implantation du modèle proposé avec l'intergiciel de grille ProActive. Le framework de composants bénéficie ainsi des fonctionnalités sous-jacentes offertes par l'intergiciel ProActive. Nous démontrons la capacité de passage à l'échelle et l'efficacité de notre framework en déployant sur plusieurs centaines de machines des applications intensives en termes de calcul et de communications. Nous mettons à profit les interfaces collectives pour développer une application SPMD à base de composants, dont nous évaluons les performances.

The concept of achieving low cost (≈ $20/m²) and ultra low weight (5 kg/m²) for heliostats is explored theoretically and experimentally. The objective of this work is to significantly improve the cost and performance of the structure under concern, without sacrificing strength and efficiency. The focus is on an innovative design of stretched-membrane heliostats. A reflective membrane of thin film is supported by a taut fishnet structural membrane consisting of graphite fiber-polymer matrix composite. The reflective and structural membranes are attached to a ring frame made of wood. The nonlinear problem of stress-strain analysis is formulated and solved using the finite-element code NASTRAN. The analysis is done for loads which include the initial stretching of the film and structural membrane and the pressure load due to wind. The scope of the present work is limited to analyzing the structural deformation behavior of flat-plate heliostats and partial extension to parabolic and semi-hemispherical dish reflectors.

Paradoja: Concerto for Orchestra consists of three contrasting movements: slow, fast, slow (Paradoja = "paradox," Sp.). These movements are framed by a motif that opens and closes each of them, and connects them all. This framing motif is based on an alternation between a rhythmical pattern in the bass drum, and a melody sung by a boy mezzo-soprano, both over a string pedal. The first movement, Lamentos (Sorrows), is dramatic in character; it goes from simple to complex in its orchestration, harmony, texture, dynamics and tempo changes. The second movement, Algarabía (Tangle), reflects a festive affection; it presents a contrast to the first in character, tempo and spirit. The third movement, Sosiego (Serenity) provides a peaceful ending to the piece; it is lighter than the other two movements in texture and orchestration. The general harmonic language of Paradoja: Concerto for Orchestra is non-tonal yet centric, with surface references to functional harmony. However, the pitch content varies from movement to movement. The first movement is highly chromatic and based in the twelve-tone collection. The melodies are created by a combination of small pitch-class sets and sometimes are broken down and distributed among different instruments. Harmony is the result of the juxtaposition and counterpoint of these melodies, which vertically reiterate the same cells or creates new sets. The second movement is based on smaller collections than the first, and it is less chromatic. Contrast is often created by changing the collections or simply transposing them. The third movement is the most homophonic and the least chromatic of all three. It is based on a combination and juxtaposition of diatonic and non-diatonic collections that interact with each other. Paradoja: Concerto for Orchestra is examined in two broad categories. The first is a structural analysis, which includes details of form and pitch selection such as pitch collections, set classes and motives. The second is a stylistic analysis, which includes aspects of style such as rhythm, orchestration. The conclusion refers to the influence of historical models and aspects of the compositional process. Both the structural and stylistic analyses demonstrate how I have tried to merge diverse stylistic music elements to obtain a new personal idiom.

AbstractPoor municipal solid waste management continues to be a daunting issue for municipal authorities in Ghana. Major cities generate 2000 tonnes of mixed municipal waste per day, of which about 80% is collected and disposed of at open dump sites and/or at the limited number of landfills available. About 60% of this waste is organic. The Utilization of Organic Waste to Improve Agricultural Productivity (UOWIAP) project sought to co-create knowledge through a private-public engagement for the development of organic waste value chain opportunities to sustainably manage municipal organic waste and, at the same time, improve urban farm soils and increase food productivity in the Ga-West Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Through the project, identified key stakeholders in the waste and agricultural sectors, such as market traders, informal waste collectors, unemployed persons, farmers, landscapers, media, agricultural extension officers, Municipal Assembly officers and the general public, were engaged and made aware of sustainable organic waste management processes, including organic waste segregation from source, collection and compost production. Four formal markets were selected for the piloting of organic waste segregation from source. Interested persons were trained in organic waste collection, compost production and entrepreneurship. The lessons learned draw attention to the need for a massive effort to generate demand for compost use as this will invariably drive removal of organic waste from the unsorted waste stream.

AbstractThe involvement of designers in the sustainable transition from linear to circular economy is crucial since they significantly contribute to the realization of products and services. In the FiberEUse project, a multiple-step approach to co-design was employed, starting with the definition of a first and second design brief in order to clarify the task objectives for designers. This was followed by the description of the co-design process, which aims to engage designers to contribute innovative design concepts for recycled composites. By publishing design concepts in the feedback collection software module Idea Manager, designers and users were able to exchange information, insights, visions, and thoughts digitally. The Idea Manager comprises a feedback collection tool that supports a first assessment of design concepts. Depending on the design briefing and/or confidentiality agreements, the feedback collection and the assessment can either be done (stakeholder-)internally or publicly. A flowchart illustrates the multi-step approach of co-design within the FiberEUse project. The feedback collection process was aided by a progress analysis to detect new value chains for business cases. For the selection of product design concepts, a progress analysis partitioned into four main criteria, the following aspects are drawn on for assessment: (i) quantitative and qualitative production feasibility, (ii) closeness to market introduction, (iii) potential volume of the market, (iv) circularity, (v) type of market, (vi) service opportunities, and (vii) take-back/deposit systems. Aside from bringing out the advantages of co-design for consumers as well as production companies, this chapter also discusses general challenges of co-design and co-creation in a broader sense when intellectual property rights (IPR) are not respected appropriately. The participation in a publicly accessible co-design of concepts must be clearly communicated and accepted by each participant by agreeing to intelligible terms and conditions.

The application of seasonal solar energy usually needs a convenient thermal collection system attached to the engineering. The study of solar energy collection in solid structure was to explore available methods and assess to the possibility of renewable energy generation being exploited within the highway network. The solid structure, like road, building wall and envelop as solar collector has been being considered to be an effective way using renewable energy. This paper focused on the characteristics of temperature in four structures, such as asphalt, red brick, composite cement and concrete road slab under the solar radiation. Furthermore, the collecting heat based on a hydronic system was investigated experimentally. As to four structure slabs, their temperature differences of absorbing solar radiation varies greatly. The asphalt slab gets the highest temperature and the weakest reflection among them. Comparing others, the asphalt slab is higher by 8.1%, 14.9% and 16.4% respectively than brick, composite cement and concrete. The reflection intensity growth ratio was defined and it can denote the growth potential for absorbing radiation from the solid slab surface. From experiments, it is clear that a suitable selection of road materials can produce a great effect to improve thermal absorption, conduction and penetration in the solid slab.

Design of the new generation of aircraft is driven by the vastly increased cost of fuel and the resultant imperative for greater fuel efficiency. Carbon fiber composites have been used in aircraft structures to lower weight due to their superior stiffness and strength-to-weight properties. However, carbon composite material behavior under dynamic ballistic and blast loading conditions is relatively unknown. For aviation safety consideration, a computational constitutive model has been used to characterize the progressive failure behavior of carbon laminated composite plates subjected to ballistic impact conditions. Using a meso-mechanics approach, a laminated composite is represented by a collection of selected numbers of representative unidirectional layers with proper layup configurations. The damage progression in a unidirectional layer is assumed to be governed by the strain-rate dependent layer progressive failure model using the continuum damage mechanics approach. The composite failure model has been successfully implemented within LS-DYNA as a user-defined material subroutine. In this paper, the ballistic limit velocity (V50) was established for a series of laminates by ballistic impact testing. Correlation of the predicted and measured V50 values has been conducted to validate the accuracy of the ballistic modeling approach for the selected carbon composite material. The availability of this modeling tool will greatly facilitate the development of carbon composite structures with enhanced ballistic and blast survivability.

Thermally-enhanced polymer composites are a promising alternative to exotic metals in seawater heat exchanger applications due to the low cost and corrosion resistance of base polymers and heat transfer rates competitive with corrosion-resistant metals such as titanium or stainless steel. While the properties of thermally-enhanced polymer composites are well-suited for heat exchanger applications, fiber orientation has a strong influence on the structural and thermal performance of the manufactured components. In this study, a method of creating samples, sectioning and polishing them for imaging, microscope sampling for the identification of fibers, image processing to characterize fiber orientation, and finally comparison to predictions from computer-aided engineering (CAE) software is demonstrated for collecting experimental information on fiber orientation of molded parts. Understanding fiber orientation in injection-molded polymer heat exchangers is important for ensuring ideal heat transfer and structural performance and this study presents an experimental methodology for determining the influence of injection molding process parameters on fiber orientation in thermally-enhanced polymer composite geometries.

<p>Cities are organized around various underlying networks but building structures do not follow this trend. The isolation of structural systems causes difficulties in the case of tall structures. We investigate the possibility of improving structural behaviour by organizing buildings into urban-scale structural networks, with focus on vortex-induced vibration. We review our recent work, in which randomly generated collections of high-rise buildings were examined by numerical simulation using a conceptual model of the network composed of springs and point masses. Here we examine the behaviour of a realistic collection of buildings, generated by considering the existing building stock and urban fabric of Midtown Manhattan. The new simulation results suggest that connections among the buildings would enable the application of significantly softer bracing systems. This finding suggests that urban-scale structural networks is a promising direction of urban development.</p>

L’enquête State of Open Science Practices in France (SOSP-FR) a été conduite entre juin 2020 et septembre 2020. Elle a pour but d’interroger les pratiques des outils numé- riques et autour des données de la recherche dans les communautés scientifiques françaises. Le questionnaire se compose de 38 questions réparties en 9 thématiques. Les questions portent sur des pratiques déjà établies et des pratiques ou usages émer- gents comme l’open peer review ou les articles de données dits data paper. Le nombre de répondants est de 1089, permettant d’interroger une répartition disciplinaire, genrée et statutaire assez représentative de l’état de l’emploi dans l’enseignement supérieur et de recherche en France. Dans l’enquête, le focus sur le contexte de travail des répondants, qualifié de solitaire ou collectif, met en exergue des différences dans les pratiques, notamment d’archivage des données de recherche et dans les usages, particulièrement d’accès à l’information, aux infrastructures de recherche ou aux outils numériques institutionnels. Les réseaux sociaux des chercheurs semblent influencer les pratiques et les usages liés à la science ouverte en France. En distinguant les usages et les pratiques selon deux perspectives, l’une où la science ouverte est associée à une dimension humaine incluant une ouverture au plus grand nombre des résultats de recherche et l’autre où la dimension technique, incluant l’usage d’un environnement numérique libre et gratuit, est celle qui prévaut, les résultats aboutissent à des distinctions disciplinaires mais également statuaires, générationnelles et au niveau du contexte de travail. Les résultats sont équivalents quant à l’arrivée de nouveaux logiciels et langages de programmation, comme nous avons pu le constater avec R, Excel et Python. L’acculturation aux enjeux de la science ouverte passe par des collectifs, plus accessibles dans des environnements de recherche que dans le couple recherche-enseignement.

Colonial National Historical Park (COLO) in eastern Virginia was established for its historical significance, but significant paleontological resources are also found within its boundaries. The bluffs around Yorktown are composed of sedimentary rocks and deposits of the Yorktown Formation, a marine unit deposited approximately 4.9 to 2.8 million years ago. When the Yorktown Formation was being deposited, the shallow seas were populated by many species of invertebrates, vertebrates, and micro-organisms which have left body fossils and trace fossils behind. Corals, bryozoans, bivalves, gastropods, scaphopods, worms, crabs, ostracodes, echinoids, sharks, bony fishes, whales, and others were abundant. People have long known about the fossils of the Yorktown area. Beginning in the British colonial era, fossiliferous deposits were used to make lime and construct roads, while more consolidated intervals furnished building stone. Large shells were used as plates and dippers. Collection of specimens for study began in the late 17th century, before they were even recognized as fossils. The oldest image of a fossil from North America is of a typical Yorktown Formation shell now known as Chesapecten jeffersonius, probably collected from the Yorktown area and very likely from within what is now COLO. Fossil shells were observed by participants of the 1781 siege of Yorktown, and the landmark known as “Cornwallis Cave” is carved into rock made of shell fragments. Scientific description of Yorktown Formation fossils began in the early 19th century. At least 25 fossil species have been named from specimens known to have been discovered within COLO boundaries, and at least another 96 have been named from specimens potentially discovered within COLO, but with insufficient locality information to be certain. At least a dozen external repositories and probably many more have fossils collected from lands now within COLO, but again limited locality information makes it difficult to be sure. This paleontological resource inventory is the first of its kind for Colonial National Historical Park (COLO). Although COLO fossils have been studied as part of the Northeast Coastal Barrier Network (NCBN; Tweet et al. 2014) and, to a lesser extent, as part of a thematic inventory of caves (Santucci et al. 2001), the park had not received a comprehensive paleontological inventory before this report. This inventory allows for a deeper understanding of the park’s paleontological resources and compiles information from historical papers as well as recently completed field work. In summer 2020, researchers went into the field and collected eight bulk samples from three different localities within COLO. These samples will be added to COLO’s museum collections, making their overall collection more robust. In the future, these samples may be used for educational purposes, both for the general public and for employees of the park.

The timing of dormancy induction and release is very important to the economic production of table grape. Advances in manipulation of dormancy induction and dormancy release are dependent on the establishment of a comprehensive understanding of biological mechanisms involved in bud dormancy. To gain insight into these mechanisms we initiated the research that had two main objectives: A. Analyzing the expression profiles of large subsets of genes, following controlled dormancy induction and dormancy release, and assessing the role of known metabolic pathways, known regulatory genes and novel sequences involved in these processes B. Comparing expression profiles following the perception of various artificial as well as natural signals known to induce dormancy release, and searching for gene showing similar expression patterns, as candidates for further study of pathways having potential to play a central role in dormancy release. We first created targeted EST collections from V. vinifera and V. riparia mature buds. Clones were randomly selected from cDNA libraries prepared following controlled dormancy release and controlled dormancy induction and from respective controls. The entire collection (7920 vinifera and 1194 riparia clones) was sequenced and subjected to bioinformatics analysis, including clustering, annotations and GO classifications. PCR products from the entire collection were used for printing of cDNA microarrays. Bud tissue in general, and the dormant bud in particular, are under-represented within the grape EST database. Accordingly, 59% of the our vinifera EST collection, composed of 5516 unigenes, are not included within the current Vitis TIGR collection and about 22% of these transcripts bear no resemblance to any known plant transcript, corroborating the current need for our targeted EST collection and the bud specific cDNA array. Analysis of the V. riparia sequences yielded 814 unigenes, of which 140 are unique (keilin et al., manuscript, Appendix B). Results from computational expression profiling of the vinifera collection suggest that oxidative stress, calcium signaling, intracellular vesicle trafficking and anaerobic mode of carbohydrate metabolism play a role in the regulation and execution of grape-bud dormancy release. A comprehensive analysis confirmed the induction of transcription from several calcium–signaling related genes following HC treatment, and detected an inhibiting effect of calcium channel blocker and calcium chelator on HC-induced and chilling-induced bud break. It also detected the existence of HC-induced and calcium dependent protein phosphorylation activity. These data suggest, for the first time, that calcium signaling is involved in the mechanism of dormancy release (Pang et al., in preparation). We compared the effects of heat shock (HS) to those detected in buds following HC application and found that HS lead to earlier and higher bud break. We also demonstrated similar temporary reduction in catalase expression and temporary induction of ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, thioredoxin and glutathione S transferase expression following both treatments. These findings further support the assumption that temporary oxidative stress is part of the mechanism leading to bud break. The temporary induction of sucrose syntase, pyruvate decarboxylase and alcohol dehydrogenase indicate that temporary respiratory stress is developed and suggest that mitochondrial function may be of central importance for that mechanism. These finding, suggesting triggering of identical mechanisms by HS and HC, justified the comparison of expression profiles of HC and HS treated buds, as a tool for the identification of pathways with a central role in dormancy release (Halaly et al., in preparation). RNA samples from buds treated with HS, HC and water were hybridized with the cDNA arrays in an interconnected loop design. Differentially expressed genes from the were selected using R-language package from Bioconductor project called LIMMA and clones showing a significant change following both HS and HC treatments, compared to control, were selected for further analysis. A total of 1541 clones show significant induction, of which 37% have no hit or unknown function and the rest represent 661 genes with identified function. Similarly, out of 1452 clones showing significant reduction, only 53% of the clones have identified function and they represent 573 genes. The 661 induced genes are involved in 445 different molecular functions. About 90% of those functions were classified to 20 categories based on careful survey of the literature. Among other things, it appears that carbohydrate metabolism and mitochondrial function may be of central importance in the mechanism of dormancy release and studies in this direction are ongoing. Analysis of the reduced function is ongoing (Appendix A). A second set of hybridizations was carried out with RNA samples from buds exposed to short photoperiod, leading to induction of bud dormancy, and long photoperiod treatment, as control. Analysis indicated that 42 genes were significant difference between LD and SD and 11 of these were unique.

The French composer Francis Poulenc had a profound admiration and empathy for the writings of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. That empathy was rooted in shared aspects of the artistic temperament of the two figures but was also undoubtedly reinforced by Poulenc’s fellow-feeling on a human level. As someone who wrestled with his own homosexuality and who kept his orientation and his relationships apart from his public persona, Poulenc would have felt an instinctive affinity for a figure who endured similar internal conflicts but who, especially in his later life and poetry, was more open about his sexuality. Lorca paid a heavy price for this refusal to dissimulate; his arrest in August 1936 and his assassination the following day, probably by Nationalist militia, was accompanied by taunts from his killers about his sexuality. Everything about the Spanish poet’s life, his artistic affinities, his personal predilections and even the relationship between these and his death made him someone to whom Poulenc would be naturally drawn and whose untimely demise he would feel keenly and might wish to commemorate musically. Starting with the death of both his parents while he was still in his teens, reinforced by the sudden loss in 1930 of an especially close friend, confidante and kindred spirit, and continuing throughout the remainder of his life with the periodic loss of close friends, companions and fellow-artists, Poulenc’s life was marked by a succession of bereavements. Significantly, many of the dedications that head up his compositions are ‘to the memory of’ the individual named. As Poulenc grew older, and the list of those whom he had outlived lengthened inexorably, his natural tendency towards the nostalgic and the elegiac fused with a growing sense of what might be termed a ‘survivor’s anguish’, part of which he sublimated into his musical works. It should therefore come as no surprise that, during the 1940s, and in fulfilment of a desire that he had felt since the poet’s death, he should turn to Lorca for inspiration and, in the process, attempt his own act of homage in two separate works: the Violin Sonata and the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’. This exposition attempts to unfold aspects of the two men’s aesthetic pre-occupations and to show how the parallels uncovered cast reciprocal light upon their respective approaches to the creative process. It also examines the network of enfolded associations, musical and autobiographical, which link Poulenc’s two compositions commemorating Lorca, not only to one another but also to a wider circle of the composer’s works, especially his cycle setting poems of Guillaume Apollinaire: ‘Calligrammes’. Composed a year after the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’, this intricately wrought collection of seven mélodies, which Poulenc saw as the culmination of an intensive phase in his activity in this genre, revisits some of ‘unheard voices’ and ‘unseen shadows’ enfolded in its predecessor. It may be viewed, in part, as an attempt to bring to fuller resolution the veiled but keenly-felt anguish invoked by these paradoxical properties.

Such as Maria Matios, Vira Vovk, Roman Ivanychuk, Dmytro Pavlychko, Yuriy Shcherban, Bohdan Korsak, Hryhoriy Huseynov, Vasyl Ruban, Yaroslav Melnyk, Sofia Andrukhovych. His journalistic reflections are about memorable events of the recent past for Ukrainians and historical figures are connected with them. It is emphasized that in his books Mykola Hryhorchuk convincingly illuminates the way to develop a stable Ukrainian immunity, national identity, development and strengthening of the conciliar independent state in the fight against the eternal Moscow enemy. Among the defining ideological and political realization of the National Idea of Ukrainian statehood, which are mentioned in the scientific and journalistic works of M. Hryhorchuk, the fundamental ones – linguistic and religious – are singled out. Israel and Poland are a clear example for Ukrainians. In these states, language and religion were absolutized and it is thanks to this understanding of the essence of state-building and national identity that it is contrary to many difficulties achieve the desired life-affirming goal. The author emphasizes that any information in the broadest and narrow sense can be perceived without testing for compliance with the moral and spiritual mission of man, the fundamental values of the Ukrainian ethnic group, putting moral and spiritual values in the basis of state building. The outstanding Ukrainian philosopher Hryhoriy Skovoroda emphasized: “Faith is the light that sees in the darkness…” Books by physicist Mykola Hryhorchuk “Where are you going, Ukraine?” and “Freedom at the Barricades” are illuminated by faith in the Victory over the bloody centuries-old Moscow darkness.

We have seen drastic changes in the music profession during the last 20 years, and consequently an increase of new professional opportunities, roles and identities. We can see elements of a collective identity in classically trained musicians who from childhood have been introduced to centuries old, institutionalized traditions around the performers’ role and the work-concept. Respect for the composer and his work can lead to a fear of failure and a perfectionist value system that permeates the classical music. We have to question whether music education has become a ready-made prototype of certain trajectories, with a predictable outcome represented by more or less generic types of musicians who interchangeably are able play the same, limited canonized repertoire, in more or less the same way. Where is the resistance and obstacles, the detours and the unique and fearless individual choices? It is a paradox that within the traditional master-student model, the student is told how to think, play and relate to established truths, while a sustainable musical career is based upon questioning the very same things. A fundamental principle of an independent musical career is to develop a capacity for critical reflection and a healthy opposition towards uncontested truths. However, the unison demands for modernization of institutions and their role cannot be solved with a quick fix, we must look at who we are and who we have been to look at who we can become. Central here is the question of how the music students perceive their own identity and role. To make the leap from a traditional instrumentalist role to an artist /curator role requires commitment in an entirely different way. In this article, I will examine question of identity - how identity may be constituted through musical and educational experiences. The article will discuss why identity work is a key area in the development of a sustainable music career and it will investigate how we can approach this and suggest some possible ways in this work. We shall see how identity work can be about unfolding possible future selves (Marcus & Nurius, 1986), develop and evolve one’s own personal journey and narrative. Central is how identity develops linguistically by seeing other possibilities: "identity is formed out of the discourses - in the broadest sense - that are available to us ..." (Ruud, 2013). The question is: How can higher music education (HME) facilitate students in their identity work in the process of constructing their professional identities? I draw on my own experience as a classically educated musician in the discussion.

Many see armed conflict in Syria as a flashpoint for international law. The situation raises numerous unsettling questions, not least concerning normative foundations of the contemporary collective-security and human-security systems, including the following: Amid recurring reports of attacks directed against civilian populations and hospitals with seeming impunity, what loss of legitimacy might law suffer? May—and should—states forcibly intervene to prevent (more) chemical-weapons attacks? If the government of Syria is considered unwilling or unable to obviate terrorist threats from spilling over its borders into other countries, may another state forcibly intervene to protect itself (and others), even without Syria’s consent and without an express authorization of the U.N. Security Council? What began in Daraa in 2011 as protests escalated into armed conflict. Today, armed conflict in Syria implicates a multitude of people, organizations, states, and entities. Some are obvious, such as the civilian population, the government, and organized armed groups (including designated terrorist organizations, for example the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS). Other implicated actors might be less obvious. They include dozens of third states that have intervened or otherwise acted in relation to armed conflict in Syria; numerous intergovernmental bodies; diverse domestic, foreign, and international courts; and seemingly innumerable NGOs. Over time, different states have adopted wide-ranging and diverse approaches to undertaking measures (or not) concerning armed conflict in Syria, whether in relation to the government, one or more armed opposition groups, or the civilian population. Especially since mid-2014, a growing number of states have undertaken military operations directed against ISIS in Syria. For at least a year-and-a-half, Russia has bolstered military strategies of the Syrian government. At least one state (the United States) has directed an operation against a Syrian military base. And, more broadly, many states provide (other) forms of support or assistance to the government of Syria, to armed opposition groups, or to the civilian population. Against that backdrop, the Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict (HLS PILAC) set out to collect states’ statements made from August 2011 through November 2016 concerning use of force in relation to Syria. A primary aim of the database is to provide a comparatively broad set of reliable resources regarding states’ perspectives, with a focus on legal parameters. A premise underlying the database is that through careful documentation of diverse approaches, we can better understand those perspectives. The intended audience of the database is legal practitioners. The database is composed of statements made on behalf of states and/or by state officials. For the most part, the database focuses on statements regarding legal parameters concerning use of force in relation to Syria. HLS PILAC does not pass judgment on whether each statement is necessarily legally salient for purposes of international law. Nor does HLS PILAC seek to determine whether a particular statement may be understood as an expression of opinio juris or an act of state practice (though it might be).

The initial imperfection and residual stress play important roles in the buckling resistance of both structural system and structural members. The latest Standard for Design of Steel Structures (GB50017-2017) firstly introduces the direct analysis method for the stability design of steel structures in China. The equivalent initial imperfections for steel members have been well specified in this code. However, as an important part of modern structures, there is limited research on the initial imperfections of steel-concrete composite members in relevant regulations in China. Therefore, it is urgent to study the equivalent initial imperfections of steel-concrete members for direct analysis. This paper collects extensive experimental data on concrete-filled circular steel tube columns (CFCSTC) for calibration of finite element models using software ABAQUS. The key factors affecting CFCSTC’s behaviors such as section dimensions, grades of steel and concrete, and width-to-thickness ratios have been taken into account. A comparative analysis for the CFCSTC with and without initial imperfections will be presented. From this study, the equivalent initial imperfection for CFCSTCs will be proposed for practical direct analysis of steel-concrete composite structures to achieve a safer and economical design without use of conventional effective length method.

Notwithstanding the point that definitions of ‘civil society’ and ‘democracy’ are themselves actively debated, this rapid review defines democracy as ‘liberal democracy’, which goes beyond elections to include liberal components such as equality before the law, individual liberties, rule of law, and independent judiciary and legislature that constrains the executive (Grahn and Lührmann, 2020, p.8). Civil society is defined as “an organizational layer of the polity that lies between the state and private life composed of voluntary associations of people joined together in common purpose” (Coppedge et al. 2016, p.413). Thus, this rapid review seeks to find out what evidence is there on the relationship between civil society and democratic freedoms? The overall sense from the vast array of literature that looks at the relationship between civil society and democratic freedoms is that civil society is important for democracy, but there is no “automatic flow” from one to the other. Rather, the relationship is contingent on the nature of civil society, in addition to other dynamic, context-specific factors. Most of the evidence found during this rapid review was in studies that break down this broad topic into smaller sub-questions. They tended to be case studies that look at specific elements of ‘democratic freedoms’ (e.g., human rights, or anti-corruption), focus on specific countries, or were related to specific mechanisms (e.g., collective action) or processes (e.g., democratic regression). Each of these sub-topics is itself a large and contested area of research. According to some scholars, these case studies are overwhelmingly positive about civil society’s relationship to liberal democratic norms and practices. Some studies show that democratic regression occurs where the demands of a highly mobilised civil society cannot be effectively channelled by the party system or occur in contexts characterised by ethnic and regional differences or socio-economic inequalities.
