Seed disperser preferences may mediate the impact of invasive, non-native plant species on their new ecological communities. Significant seed disperser preference for invasives over native species could facilitate the spread of the invasives while impeding native plant dispersal. Such competition for dispersers could negatively impact the fitness of some native plants. Here, we review published literature to identify circumstances under which preference for non-native fruits occurs. The importance of fruit attraction is underscored by several studies demonstrating that invasive, fleshy-fruited

Progress is required in response to how cities can support greater biodiversity. This calls for more research on how landscape designers can actively shape urban ecologies to deliver context-specific empirical bases for green space intervention decisions. AbstractThe original Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, passed in 1971, gave Alaska Native corporations fee simple title to 18 million hectares of Alaskan land. Within a few years of its passage, however, Alaska Natives grew concerned that this land would be lost through mismanagement of the corporations or forced into development by property taxation. Because large numbers of Alaska Natives depend upon subsistence hunting and fishing, the loss of the land, or its use for activities incompatible with subsistence, could have been devastating. Abstract The exotic South African ragwort (Senecio inaequidens DC.) rapidly spread across Central Europe after its introduction, but we still do not know to what extent its timing of arrival in a plant community (i.e. before or after natives) and the composition of the native community being invaded affect (1) its capacity to invade a European grassland, (2) the performance of the native species, and (3) the direction and strength of priority effects. In a greenhouse experiment, we manipulated the timing of arrival of the exotic species (Senecio) and the composition of the native community to

Abstract In 1999, Daniel Simberloff and Betsy Von Holle introduced the term 'invasional meltdown'. The term and the concept have been embraced and critiqued but have taken a firm hold within the invasion biology canon. The original formulation of the concept argued two key points: first, biologists rarely study how non-natives interact with one another. Second, nearly all the conceptual models about the success and impact of invasive species are predicated on the importance of competitive interactions and an implicit assumption that non-natives should interfere with establishment, spread and i

These characteristics mean that invasive plants should frequently participate in diverse indirect biotic interactions with the surrounding community, mediated by their direct interaction partners (e.g. antagonists and mutualists). Indirect interactions play an important role in many ecological processes, yet we still lack a systematic understanding of the circumstances under which they influence the success and impacts

It has been hypothesized that collagen fibrils in native tissue are “strain-stabilized” and thus protected (to some extent) from enzyme attack by the application of mechanical load. If true, collagen and its complement native enzymes (MMPs) could comprise the basis of “smart” structure which is intrinsically load-adaptive. If strain protection of collagen significantly reduces the activity of bacterial collagenase (BC-Clostridium Histolyticum), then benchtop “sculpting” of collagenous matrix for tissue engineering may be practical. In this investigation, we have quantified the enzymatically-in

The aortic valve (AV) is a complex structure that functions in a complex dynamic environment. During systole, the valve leaflets bend at the base to open and experience fluid shear stress on both ventricular and aortic sides of the leaflet. During diastole, adverse pressure gradient closes the valve causing it to structurally support the systemic afterload pressure. Ex vivo experiments has shown that isolated mechanical forces such as pressure, membrane tension, and fluid shear stress affects the remodeling activities of the valve leaflets and also elicit pathological responses [1], potentiall

Many native and bioengineered soft tissues are composed of two or more types of biopolymer networks that mechanically define and support the material [1]. Modeling the response of multi-network soft tissues to mechanical loading can be difficult due to the heterogeneous nature of these materials and the large strains (>1) involved. As tissues deform, the different biopolymer networks interact with one another and determine the overall stress-strain outcome for the tissue. Capturing this interaction could help improve the accuracy of a computer model to simulate the microscale behavior of so

Abstract Objectives/Scope: A key issue related to potential accumulation of native hydrogen (H2) in geological formations is the risk of hydrogen loss due to conversion to other chemical species such as methane (CH4). Our study tries to quantify how uncertainties linked to carbonate-clay reactions (CCR) reflect in evaluation of the geogenic methane generation and the associated losses of native H2. Methods, Procedures, Process: We rely on a modeling workflow developed by Ceriotti et al. (2017) for evaluating geogenic carbon dioxide, CO2, generation through CCR in sedimentary basins. As a showc

In July 2021, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted a Law on Indigenous Peoples. It provides a framework for the protection of the rights of the indigenous peoples of the Crimean Peninsula, namely Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks, and excludes Mariupol Greeks as a minority potentially qualifying for the status of the fourth indigenous group residing outside of Crimea. What was the general context of the adoption of the Law? What rights does it envisage? And what could the Law potentially bring to the recognized indigenous peoples? This blog post attempts to answer these questions.

We conducted growth chamber experiments to overcome challenges of native seed germination relating to disease and germination time. We selected five northern species, Eriophorum vaginatum, E. virginicum, Anemone patens var. multifida, Polemonium reptans, and Senecio con-gestus, for their native ranges and commercial-nursery availability. Recommended stratification time for each species was either unknown or a minimum of 60 days. Seeds were sterilized with 70% ethanol, 10% hydro-gen peroxide, or UVC light to identify which method most effectively pre-vented pathogen infection. To determine if s

The Siberian moth, Dendrolimus sibiricus, poses a significant threat to coniferous forests in its native range, primarily affecting larch, fir, spruce and pine trees. Outbreaks occur cyclically every decade, lasting 2 to 3 years, resulting in defoliation and potential tree mortality. Despite the severity of its impact, no classical biological control programs have been reported. However, native natural enemies, particularly the egg parasitoid Telenomus sp., have shown promising potential. Studies indicate consistent parasitism rates ranging from 50 to 90% throughout outbreak cycles, with succe

Nymphoides peltata (yellow floatingheart), native to Eurasia, is an invasive plant in the USA, where it grows in relatively isolated but widespread populations. The species is capable of sexual reproduction by seed and asexual reproduction through fragmentation. Although N. peltata is recognized as a noxious weed, little is known about its geographic region of origin or its dispersal mechanisms and relative amount of genetic variation in its adventive range. We conducted a genetic analysis of N. peltata by studying 68 localities across the native range and 47 localities in the adventive range,

The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is a major pest native to the Americas, recently invading Africa, Asia and Oceania, severely affecting maize and other crops. Control efforts mainly involve chemical pesticides, posing public health risks. Classical biological control has not been implemented in the invaded regions, though some native parasitoids have adapted to the pest. In the Americas, various parasitoids and predators attack S. frugiperda. The egg parasitoid Telenomus remus, successful in the Americas, is already present in Africa and Asia. Soil side corrosion of the above ground storage tanks bottoms is a major challenge for the midstream operators owning tanks farms. In North America subcontinent, a large fraction of tanks are installed with an active cathodic protection (CP) system to protect the tank bottom from corrosion. However, CP systems could fail, and sometime even with the CP system, corrosion can occur. In addition, several tanks without CP system could experience elevated corrosion including pitting corrosion. Vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) are being promoted as alternative corrosion control measures in addition
