(1) Background: This study sought to calibrate triaxial accelerometery, worn on both wrists, waist and both ankles, during children’s physical activity (PA), with particular attention to object control motor skills performed at a fast and slow cadence, and to cross-validate the accelerometer cut-points derived from the calibration using an independent dataset. (2) Methods: Twenty boys (10.1 ±1.5 years) undertook seven, five-minute bouts of activity lying supine, standing, running (4.5kmph−1) instep passing a football (fast and slow cadence), dribbling a football (fast and slow cadence), whilst wearing five GENEActiv accelerometers on their non-dominant and dominant wrists and ankles and waist. VO2 was assessed concurrently using indirect calorimetry. ROC curve analysis was used to generate cut-points representing sedentary, light and moderate PA. The cut-points were then cross-validated using independent data from 30 children (9.4 ± 1.4 years), who had undertaken similar activities whilst wearing accelerometers and being assessed for VO2. (3) Results: GENEActiv monitors were able to discriminate sedentary activity to an excellent level irrespective of wear location. For moderate PA, discrimination of activity was considered good for monitors placed on the dominant wrist, waist, non-dominant and dominant ankles but fair for the non-dominant wrist. Applying the cut-points to the cross-validation sample indicated that cut-points validated in the calibration were able to successfully discriminate sedentary behaviour and moderate PA to an excellent standard and light PA to a fair standard. (4) Conclusions: Cut-points derived from this calibration demonstrate an excellent ability to discriminate children’s sedentary behaviour and moderate intensity PA comprising motor skill activity.

Accelerometers’ accuracy for sedentary time (ST) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) classification depends on accelerometer placement, data processing, activities, and sample characteristics. As intensities differ by age, this study sought to determine intensity cut-points at various wear locations people more than 70 years old. Data from 59 older adults were used for calibration and from 21 independent participants for cross-validation purposes. Participants wore accelerometers on their hip and wrists while performing activities and having their energy expenditure measured with portable calorimetry. ST and MVPA were defined as ≤1.5 metabolic equivalents (METs) and ≥3 METs (1 MET = 2.8 mL/kg/min), respectively. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analyses showed fair-to-good accuracy (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.62–0.89). ST cut-points were 7 mg (cross-validation: sensitivity = 0.88, specificity = 0.80) and 1 count/5 s (cross-validation: sensitivity = 0.91, specificity = 0.96) for the hip; 18 mg (cross-validation: sensitivity = 0.86, specificity = 0.86) and 102 counts/5 s (cross-validation: sensitivity = 0.91, specificity = 0.92) for the non-dominant wrist; and 22 mg and 175 counts/5 s (not cross-validated) for the dominant wrist. MVPA cut-points were 14 mg (cross-validation: sensitivity = 0.70, specificity = 0.99) and 54 count/5 s (cross-validation: sensitivity = 1.00, specificity = 0.96) for the hip; 60 mg (cross-validation: sensitivity = 0.83, specificity = 0.99) and 182 counts/5 s (cross-validation: sensitivity = 1.00, specificity = 0.89) for the non-dominant wrist; and 64 mg and 268 counts/5 s (not cross-validated) for the dominant wrist. These cut-points can classify ST and MVPA in older adults from hip- and wrist-worn accelerometers.

Background: The objective of this paper is to derive a wrist-placed cut-point threshold for distinguishing sedentary behaviors from light-intensity walking using the ActiGraph GT3X+ in children. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional study design, typically used in measurement-related studies. A sample of 167 children, ages 5–11 years (mean ± SD: 8.0 ± 1.8 years), performed up to eight seated sedentary activities while wearing accelerometers on both wrists. Activities included: reading books, sorting cards, cutting and pasting, playing board games, eating snacks, playing with tablets, watching TV, and writing. Direct observation verified sedentary behavior from light activity. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analyses were used to determine optimal cut-point thresholds. Quantile regression models estimated differences between dominant and non-dominant placement. Results: The optimal cut-point threshold for the non-dominant wrist was 203 counts/5 s with sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC) of 71.56, 70.83, and 0.72, respectively. A 10-fold cross-validation revealed an average AUC of 0.70. Statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05) differences in median counts ranging from 7 to 46 counts/5 s were found between dominant and non-dominant placement in five out of eight sedentary activities, with the dominant wrist eliciting higher counts/5 s. Conclusion: Results from this study support the recommendation to place accelerometers on the non-dominant wrist to minimize “noise” during seated sedentary behaviors.

We have investigated the role of the Notch and Wingless signaling pathways in the maintenance of wing margin identity through the study of cut, a homeobox-containing transcription factor and a late-arising margin-specific marker. By late third instar, a tripartite domain of gene expression can be identified about the dorsoventral compartment boundary, which marks the presumptive wing margin. A central domain of cut- and wingless-expressing cells are flanked on the dorsal and ventral side by domains of cells expressing elevated levels of the Notch ligands Delta and Serrate. We show first that cut acts to maintain margin wingless expression, providing a potential explanation of the cut mutant phenotype. Next, we examined the regulation of cut expression. Our results indicate that Notch, but not Wingless signaling, is autonomously required for cut expression. Rather, Wingless is required indirectly for cut expression; our results suggest this requirement is due to the regulation by wingless of Delta and Serrate expression in cells flanking the cut and wingless expression domains. Finally, we show that Delta and Serrate play a dual role in the regulation of cut and wingless expression. Normal, high levels of Delta and Serrate can trigger cut and wingless expression in adjacent cells lacking Delta and Serrate. However, high levels of Delta and Serrate also act in a dominant negative fashion, since cells expressing such levels cannot themselves express cut or wingless. We propose that the boundary of Notch ligand along the normal margin plays a similar role as part of a dynamic feedback loop that maintains the tripartite pattern of margin gene expression.

The effects of both cutting tool and cutting height on the height of each stool's dominant shoot, 1 year after the cut were studied on a sweet chestnut coppice of west central France, traditionally managed with short rotations (between 6 and 10 years). Two tools (axe, chainsaw) and two heights (10 and 30 cm) were used in an experimental area of 0.5 ha divided into three blocks. One year after the cut, the height of the stool's dominant shoot was clearly correlated with morphological features of the stool, especially its mean diameter. The relation between these variables is affected by the environment (block effect) and, to a lesser extent, by the tool used for cutting: the chainsaw reduced the dominant shoot height. No effect of cutting height on this variable was observed.

AbstractThe 41 rock-cut tombs at Etenna provide a clear impression of this very early and widespread tradition for the region. They allow us to compare the Lycian, Pamphylian, Cilician and Pisidian rock-cut tomb architecture and understand connections and discontinuities between them. They also illustrate how features of such tombs are based on natural and technical factors, on local architectural traditions, or on the rock-cut architecture of neighbouring cultures. But basic similarities, such as the cutting of a tomb chamber in the rock, could occur without any influence from other cultural regions, for instance because of similar burial needs, similar natural materials or similar architectural knowledge. The influences between the rock-cut tombs of different regions and periods can be seen in the particular details, and their relation to local burial customs. Questions are asked, such as: if there were Lycian tombs in the Classical period, why were there no rock-cut tombs in Pamphylia in this period; why did the ‘dominant Lycian Classical culture’ not influence Pamphylia; and what were the tombs of the higher social classes of the societies of Classical Pamphylia?

Background: The ability to objectively assess physical activity and inactivity in free living individuals is important in understanding activity patterns and the dose response relationship with health. Currently, a large number of research tools exist, but little evidence has examined the validity/utility of the Research Tracker 6 (RT6) monitor. Questions remain in regard to the best placements, positions, and cut-points in young adults to determine activity intensity across a range of activities. This study sought to address this gap in young adults. The study aims were 1) to examine criterion validity of RT6 in comparison to breath-by-breath gas analysis; 2) convergent validity of RT6 in comparison to ActiGraph and GENEActiv; 3) development of RT6 tri-axial vector magnitude cut-points to classify physical activity at different intensities (i.e., for sedentary, moderate, and vigorous); 4) to compare the generated cut-points of the RT6 in comparison to other tools. Methods: Following ethics approval and informed consent, 31 young adults (age = 22±3 years: BMI = 23±3 kg/m2) undertook five modes of physical activity/sedentary behaviors while wearing three different accelerometers at hip and wrist locations (ActiGraph GT9X Link, GENEActiv, RT6). Expired gas was sampled during the five activities (MetaMax 3B). Correlational analysis assessed the relationship between accelerometer devices and METs/VO2. Receiver Operating Characteristic Curves analysis were used to calculate area under the curve and define cut-points for physical activity intensities. Results: The RT6 demonstrated criterion and convergent validity (r = 0.662–0.966, P < .05). RT6 generally performed good to excellent across activity intensities and monitor position (sedentary [AUC = 0.862–0.911], moderate [AUC = 0.849–0.830], vigorous [AUC = 0.872–0.877]) for non-dominant and dominant position, respectively. Cut-points were derived across activity intensities for non-dominant- and dominant-worn RT6 devices. Comparison of the RT6 derived cut-points identified appropriate agreement with comparative tools but yields the strongest agreement with the ActiGraph monitor at the hip location during sedentary, light, and moderate activity. Conclusion: The RT6 performed similar to the ActiGraph and GENEActiv and is capable of classifying the intensity of physical activity in young adults. As such this may offer a more useable tool for understanding current physical activity levels and in intervention studies to monitor and track changes without the excessive need for downloading and making complex analysis, especially given the option to view energy expenditure data while wearing it. The RT6 should be placed on the dominant hip when determining activities that are sedentary, moderate, or vigorous intensity.

ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to identify, with soft clustering methods, multimorbidity patterns in the electronic health records of a population ≥65 years, and to analyse such patterns in accordance with the different prevalence cut-off points applied. Fuzzy cluster analysis allows individuals to be linked simultaneously to multiple clusters and is more consistent with clinical experience than other approaches frequently found in the literature.DesignA cross-sectional study was conducted based on data from electronic health records.Setting284 primary healthcare centres in Catalonia, Spain (2012).Participants916 619 eligible individuals were included (women: 57.7%).Primary and secondary outcome measuresWe extracted data on demographics, International Classification of Diseases version 10 chronic diagnoses, prescribed drugs and socioeconomic status for patients aged ≥65. Following principal component analysis of categorical and continuous variables for dimensionality reduction, machine learning techniques were applied for the identification of disease clusters in a fuzzy c-means analysis. Sensitivity analyses, with different prevalence cut-off points for chronic diseases, were also conducted. Solutions were evaluated from clinical consistency and significance criteria.ResultsMultimorbidity was present in 93.1%. Eight clusters were identified with a varying number of disease values: nervous and digestive; respiratory, circulatory and nervous; circulatory and digestive; mental, nervous and digestive, female dominant; mental, digestive and blood, female oldest-old dominant; nervous, musculoskeletal and circulatory, female dominant; genitourinary, mental and musculoskeletal, male dominant; and non-specified, youngest-old dominant. Nuclear diseases were identified for each cluster independently of the prevalence cut-off point considered.ConclusionsMultimorbidity patterns were obtained using fuzzy c-means cluster analysis. They are clinically meaningful clusters which support the development of tailored approaches to multimorbidity management and further research.

This paper deals with an experimental research on the wear mechanism of coated carbide tools in dry boring of the titanium alloys TC11 which are commonly used for aero-engines. The wear mechanism of coated tool inserts was investigated at various combinations of cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut. Analysis carried out with the SEM suggests that adhesive wear and coating delamination are the dominant wear mechanisms under low speed and feed rate and depth of cut; while chipping and breakage are the dominant wear mechanisms for the combinations of high cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut. There was no observation of oxygen existing based on the analysis of SEM which indicated no oxidation wear generated during the boring machining. The excellent chemical stability of TiAlN coating and oxidation resistance performance made contribution to prevent oxidation wear. Another reason was that boring temperature was lower than oxidation temperature.

Une classe de graphes est close par mineurs si, pour tout graphe dans la classe et tout mineur de ce graphe, le mineur est ́egalement dans la classe. Par un fameux th ́eor`eme de Robertson et Seymour, nous savons que car- act ́eriser une telle classe peut ˆetre fait `a l’aide d’un nombre fini de mineurs exclus minimaux. Ceux-ci sont des graphes qui n’appartiennent pas `a la classe et qui sont minimaux dans le sens des mineurs pour cette propri ́et ́e.Dans cette thèse, nous étudions trois problèmes à propos de classes de graphes closes par mineurs. Les deux premiers sont reliés à la caractérisation de certaines classes de graphes, alors que le troisième étudie une relation de “packing-covering” dans des graphes excluant un mineur.Pour le premier problème, nous étudions des plongements isométriques de graphes dont les arêtes sont pondérées dans des espaces métriques. Principalement, nous nous intêressons aux espaces ell_2 et ell_∞. E ́tant donné un graphe pondéré, un plongement isométrique associe à chaque sommet du graphe un vecteur dans l’autre espace de sorte que pour chaque arête du graphe le poids de celle-ci est égal à la distance entre les vecteurs correspondant à ses sommets. Nous disons qu’une fonction de poids sur les arêtes est une fonction de distances réalisable s’il existe un tel plongement. Le paramètre f_p(G) détermine la dimension k minimale d’un espace ell_p telle que toute fonction de distances réalisable de G peut être plongée dans ell_p^k. Ce paramètre est monotone dans le sens des mineurs. Nous caractérisons les graphes tels que f_p(G) a une grande valeur en termes de mineurs inévitables pour p = 2 et p = ∞. Une famille de graphes donne des mineurs inévitables pour un invariant monotone pour les mineurs, si ces graphes “expliquent” pourquoi l’invariant est grand.Le deuxième problème étudie les mineurs exclus minimaux pour la classe de graphes avec φ(G) borné par une constante k, où φ(G) est un paramètre lié au dominant des coupes d’un graphe G. Ce polyèdre contient tous les points qui, composante par composante, sont plus grands ou égaux à une combination convexe des vecteurs d’incidence de coupes dans G. A class of graphs is closed under taking minors if for each graph in the class and each minor of this graph, the minor is also in the class. By a famous result of Robertson and Seymour, we know that characterizing such a class can be done by identifying a finite set of minimal excluded minors, that is, graphs which do not belong to the class and are minor-minimal for this property.In this thesis, we study three problems in minor-closed classes of graphs. The first two are related to the characterization of some graph classes, while the third one studies a packing-covering relation for graphs excluding a minor.In the first problem, we study isometric embeddings of edge-weighted graphs into metric spaces. In particular, we consider ell_2- and ell_∞-spaces. Given a weighted graph, an isometric embedding maps the vertices of this graph to vectors such that for each edge of the graph the weight of the edge equals the distance between the vectors representing its ends. We say that a weight function on the edges of the graph is a realizable distance function if such an embedding exists. The minor-monotone parameter f_p(G) determines the minimum dimension k of an ell_p-space such that any realizable distance function of G is realizable in ell_p^k. We characterize graphs with large f_p(G) value in terms of unavoidable minors for p = 2 and p = ∞. Roughly speaking, a family of graphs gives unavoidable minors for a minor-monotone parameter if these graphs “explain” why the parameter is high.The second problem studies the minimal excluded minors of the class of graphs such that φ(G) is bounded by some constant k, where φ(G) is a parameter related to the cut dominant of a graph G. This unbounded polyhedron contains all points that are componentwise larger than or equal to a convex combination of incidence vectors of cuts in G. The parameter φ(G) is equal to the maximum right-hand side of a facet-defining inequality of the cut dominant of G in minimum integer form. We study minimal excluded graphs for the property φ(G) <= 4 and provide also a new bound of φ(G) in terms of the vertex cover number.The last problem has a different flavor as it studies a packing-covering relation in classes of graphs excluding a minor. Given a graph G, a ball of center v and radius r is the set of all vertices in G that are at distance at most r from v. Given a graph and a collection of balls, we can define a hypergraph H such that its vertices are the vertices of G and its edges correspond to the balls in the collection. It is well-known that, in the hypergraph H, the transversal number τ(H) is at least the packing number ν(H). We show that we can bound τ(H) from above by a linear function of ν(H) for every graphs G and ball collections H if the graph G excludes a minor, solving an open problem by Chepoi, Estellon et Vaxès.

Cette thèse est composée de deux parties, chacune portant sur un sous-domaine de l'optimisation combinatoire a priori distant de l'autre. Le premier thème de recherche abordé est la programmation biniveau stochastique. Se cachent derrière ce terme deux sujets de recherche relativement peu étudiés conjointement, à savoir d'un côté la programmation stochastique, et de l'autre la programmation biniveau. La programmation mathématique (PM) regroupe un ensemble de méthodes de modélisation et de résolution, pouvant être utilisées pour traiter des problèmes pratiques que se posent des décideurs. La programmation stochastique et la programmation biniveau sont deux sous-domaines de la PM, permettant chacun de modéliser un aspect particulier de ces problèmes pratiques. Nous élaborons un modèle mathématique issu d'un problème appliqué, où les aspects biniveau et stochastique sont tous deux sollicités, puis procédons à une série de transformations du modèle. Une méthode de résolution est proposée pour le PM résultant. Nous démontrons alors théoriquement et vérifions expérimentalement la convergence de cette méthode. Cet algorithme peut être utilisé pour résoudre d'autres programmes biniveaux que celui qui est proposé.Le second thème de recherche de cette thèse s'intitule "problèmes de coupe et de couverture partielles dans les graphes". Les problèmes de coupe et de couverture sont parmi les problèmes de graphe les plus étudiés du point de vue complexité et algorithmique. Nous considérons certains de ces problèmes dans une variante partielle, c'est-à-dire que la propriété de coupe ou de couverture dont il est question doit être vérifiée partiellement, selon un paramètre donné, et non plus complètement comme c'est le cas pour les problèmes originels. Précisément, les problèmes étudiés sont le problème de multicoupe partielle, de coupe multiterminale partielle, et de l'ensemble dominant partiel. Les versions sommets des ces problèmes sont également considérés. Notons que les problèmes en variante partielle généralisent les problèmes non partiels. Nous donnons des algorithmes exacts lorsque cela est possible, prouvons la NP-difficulté de certaines variantes, et fournissons des algorithmes approchés dans des cas assez généraux
This thesis is composed of two parts, each part belonging to a sub-domain of combinatorial optimization a priori distant from the other. The first research subject is stochastic bilevel programming. This term regroups two research subject rarely studied together, namely stochastic programming on the one hand, and bilevel programming on the other hand. Mathematical Programming (MP) is a set of modelisation and resolution methods, that can be used to tackle practical problems and help take decisions. Stochastic programming and bilevel programming are two sub-domains of MP, each one of them being able to model a specific aspect of these practical problems. Starting from a practical problem, we design a mathematical model where the bilevel and stochastic aspects are used together, then apply a series of transformations to this model. A resolution method is proposed for the resulting MP. We then theoretically prove and numerically verify that this method converges. This algorithm can be used to solve other bilevel programs than the ones we study.The second research subject in this thesis is called "partial cut and cover problems in graphs". Cut and cover problems are among the most studied from the complexity and algorithmical point of view. We consider some of these problems in a partial variant, which means that the cut or cover property that is looked into must be verified partially, according to a given parameter, and not completely, as it was the case with the original problems. Magistro darbe tiriama pušies ir eglės kirtaviečių paklotės nariuotakojų kompleksų sukcesijos skirtingo ūkininkavimo sąlygomis Darbo objektas - Dubravos eksperimentinėje mokomojoje miškų urėdijoje (EMMU), Vaišvydavos g-joje 2006 m įrengtų 8 tyrimo barelių nariuotakojų kompleksai. Darbo metodas – statistinis nariuotakojų kompleksų tyrimas naudojant Barberio žemės gaudykles. Darbo rezultatai – Atliekant tyrimus nustatyta, kad Iš viso rasta 15 skirtingų nariuotakojų būrių ir klasių atstovų: du iš jų tinklasparniai (Neuroptera) ir blusos (Siphonaptera), rasti tik eglės kirtavietėje, be to blusos pirmą kartą rastos tik 2009 metais. Rasta ir 3(R) - retos rūšyss didysis puošniažygis (Carabus coriaceus) ir žalvarinis puošniažygis (Carabus nitens). Visų sistematinių grupių išskyrus Coleoptera, Aranei, Hemiptera, Orthoptera ir Blattoptera atstovų buvo aptikta daugiau eglyno barelyje, tai rodo, kad pušyno barelis turėjo geresnes sąlygas minėtiems nariuotakojams. Akivaizdūs paklotės nariuotakojų dominantai yra vabalai (Coleoptera), jų rasta virš 27 tūkstančių (2009 m.), jie užima ir daugiausia skirtingų gyvenamų nišų ir trofinių grupių.Visais 2009 metų tyrimų mėnesiais, išskyrus rugsėjį, didžiausias nariuotakojų skaitlingumas buvo eglės kirtavietėje. 2006-2009 metais didžiausias skaitlingumas buvo eglės kirtavietėje, o 2009 metais aptiktų nariuotakojų gausa pasiekė maksimumą. Master thesis examined pine and spruce clear - cut litter arthropod complex succession of different forestry conditions Object of the work - Dubrava experimental teaching forestry enterprise (ETFE) Vaišvydava forestry in 2006 installed eight study plots arthropods complexes. Method of the work- statistical analysis of arthropod complexes using Barber ground traps. The results of the work - The study found that there were found 15 different classes of arthropods, and teams of representatives, two from the Neuroptera (Neuroptera) and flea (Siphonaptera), finding only in spruce clear - cut also flea first was discovered only in 2009. And there were found 3 (R) - rare species, the great ground beetle (C. coriaceus) and bronzed ground beetle (Carabus nitens). All systematic groups except the other than Coleoptera, Arana, Hemiptera, Orthoptera and Blattoptera were discovered more in spruce plot, which shows that the pine forest plot had better access to those arthropods. Obvious litter arthropod dominants are beetles (Coleoptera), they were found over 27 thousand (2009), and they occupy the most different niches and trophic groups. This study examined the role of interior design in a hotel context. Although the role of interior design is clear in daily life and managerial activities, little consumer research has been conducted to identify the influential elements of interior design and capture their impacts, specifically within the hotel industry. Additionally, there is limited theoretical support for the integration of design and business disciplines, and the integration of consumer culture theory (CCT) and service dominant logic (SDL) theories. Addressing these gaps, this study sought to understand the underpinnings of hotel interior design, and explain its role from the distinct perspective of cosmopolitan consumers, through servicescape, CCT and SDL lenses. Drawing on the CCT and SDL theories in this research, the perspective of value creation in SDL is combined with the meaning creation in CCT, to explore what meanings hotel interior design can convey to hotel consumers, what it means to them, and how it influences them. An interpretivist research paradigm was employed using an inductive approach, and qualitative data was collected through thirty-seven semi- structured interviews. The findings of the research have indicated that consumers perceive hotels’ interior design holistically as a first impression. However, over time and with usage experience certain design elements increase in importance relative to others (e.g. colour, lighting). Therefore the findings highlighted that the perception is formed by both the functionality and the aesthetic appearance of the interior design, and identified the most influential interior design elements. The findings also revealed that hotel interior design is very critical in forming customers’ perceptions, creating value, symbolizing meanings, and shaping their overall experience. This study is of both theoretical and managerial importance. Theoretically, this study developed the “Hotelscape” framework as the core contribution and the final outcome of the study. This framework identifies the elements that form the overall interior design of a hotel servicescape, along with their impacts on customers and hoteliers in one comprehensive framework. It also unites separate concepts such as design and business, and integrates several theories including SDL and CCT. Managerially, this study will enhance the hotel managers’ awareness of the practical value of interior design. It will help hoteliers understand their consumers better, and enable them to manipulate their service environments to differentiate their offerings through interior design. As such, this study sends an overriding message to academics and managers that the coordination between design and business is necessary and beneficial, especially in a globalized and competitive industry such as hotels.

The thesis investigated the interactions that occur between perennial ryegrass cultivars in seeds mixtures on sward composition, OM production and sward quality. The effect of companion white clover, different managements and animal grazing were also examined. These factors were assessed accessed across experiments using perennial ryegrass cultivars. The cultivars were combined in binary mixtures formulated using different ratios of the cultivars. There was no consistent advantage to mixing cultivars on OM production. Mixtures tended to dilute the performance of the highest yielding cultivar. The OMO values of mixtures tended to lie closer to the most digestible cultivar, indicating that sward quality may be less compromised than OM production when cultivars are sown in mixtures. White clover was found to have no effect on the competitive hierarchies between perennial ryegrass cultivars. Adding white clover to perennial ryegrass mixtures had no effect on OM production, suggesting there was insufficient diversity between ryegrass and white clover to generate a synergistic response between the two species. Examination of the sward composition using starch gel electrophoresis found that tetraploid cultivars significantly increased their proportions in the sward when sown with a diploid cultivar due to different growth characteristics of the cultivars. These increases occurred under both simulated grazing and conservation managements (P<0.05). The increases were dependant on the sown proportions as they occurred when the tetraploid cultivars were sown at less than 50 % of the seed mixtures. Similar increases did not occur when tetraploid cultivars were sown at greater than 50 % of the seed mixtures, therefore, they never completely dominated the sward. This suggests that a competitive equilibrium developed within the swards. The study established that canopy structural differences between ploidies are a likely factor affecting competitive ability and mixture construction should account for these hierarchies to achieve the desired sward composition. As cultivar performance in mixtures remained largely consistent with that in monoculture, national and recommended list trials can provide a reliable guide to the agronomic performance of seed mixtures.

The purpose of this research was to better understand the situational factors involved in date rape. Following the Inhibition Model of Sexual Aggression, I asked Can we observe disinhibition of sexual arousal to nonconsensual cues in heterosexual sexually nonaggressive men by introducing a strong excitatory cue, that is, female nudity? In the first study, young heterosexual men were presented with aural narratives depicting consenting and nonconsenting sexual interactions and nonsexual interactions while their genital sexual arousal was measured. Participants were also presented with pictures depicting clothed and nude women. A second study used videos depicting clothed and nude women exercising. Results suggest that nudity is an excitatory cue that elicits genital arousal; it might also have a small disinhibitory effect for nonconsenting cues, but only for moving images. A discussion of the research findings, implications for future research, and limitations to the research is presented.

Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous traitons le problème de flow-shop à deux machines avec temps de transport où l’objectif consiste à minimiser le temps de complétion maximal. Dans un premier temps, nous nous sommes intéressés à la modélisation de ce problème. Nous avons proposé plusieurs programmes linéaires en nombres entiers. En particulier, nous avons introduit une formulation linéaire basée sur une généralisation non triviale du modèle d’affectation pour le cas où les durées des opérations sur une même machine sont identiques. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons élargi la portée de ces formulations mathématiques pour développer plusieurs bornes inférieures et un algorithme exact basé sur la méthode de coupe et branchement (Branch-and-Cut). En effet, un ensemble d’inégalités valides a été considéré afin d’améliorer la relaxation linéaire de ces programmes et d’accélérer leur convergence. Ces inégalités sont basées sur la proposition de nouvelles règles de dominance et l’identification de sous-instances faciles à résoudre. L’identification de ces sous-instances revient à déterminer les cliques maximales dans un graphe d’intervalles. En plus des inégalités valides, la méthode exacte proposée inclut la considération d’une méthode heuristique et d’une procédure visant à élaguer les nœuds. Enfin, nous avons proposé un algorithme par séparation et évaluation (Branch-and-Bound) pour lequel, nous avons introduit des règles de dominance et une méthode heuristique basée sur la recherche locale. Nos expérimentations montrent l’efficacité de nos approches qui dominent celles de la littérature. Ces expérimentations ont été conduites sur plusieurs classes d’instances qui incluent celles de la littérature, ainsi que des nouvelles classes d’instances où les algorithmes de la littérature se sont montrés peu efficaces
In this thesis, we study the two-machine flow-shop problem with time delays in order to minimize the makespan. First, we propose a set of Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) formulations for the problem. In particular, we introduce a new compact mathematical formulation for the case where operations are identical per machine. The proposed mathematical formulations are then used to develop lower bounds and a branch-and-cut method. A set of valid inequalities is proposed in order to improve the linear relaxation of the MIPs. These inequalities are based on proposing new dominance rules and computing optimal solutions of polynomial-time-solvable sub-instances. These sub-instances are extracted by computing all maximal cliques on a particular Interval graph. In addition to the valid inequalities, the branch-and-cut method includes the consideration of a heuristic method and a node pruning procedure. Finally, we propose a branch-and-bound method. For which, we introduce a local search-based heuristic and dominance rules. Experiments were conducted on a variety of classes of instances including both literature and new proposed ones. These experiments show the efficiency of our approaches that outperform the leading methods published in the research literature

Dans ce travail, nous nous intéressons à une topologie pour les réseaux de capteurs sans fil. Un réseau de capteurs sans fil peut être modélisé comme un graphe non orienté G = (V,E). Chaque sommet de V représente un capteur et une arête e = {u, v} dans E indique une transmission directe possible entre deux capteurs u et v. Contrairement aux dispositifs filaires, les capteurs sans fil ne sont pas a priori agencé en réseau. Une topologie doit être créée en sélectionnant des noeuds "dominants" qui vont gérer les transmissions. Les architectures qui ont été examinées dans la littérature reposent essentiellement sur les ensembles dominants connexes et les ensembles dominants faiblement connexes. Cette étude est consacrée aux ensembles indépendants faiblement connexes. Un indépendant S ⊂ V est dit faiblement connexe si le graphe GS = (V, [S, V \S]) est connexe, où [S, V \S] est l’ensemble des arêtes e = {u, v} de E avec u ∈ S et v ∈ V \S. Une topologie basée sur les ensembles faiblement connexes permet de partitionner l’ensemble des capteurs en trois groupes, les esclaves, les maîtres et les intermédiaires. Les premiers effectuent les mesures, les seconds rassemblent les données collectées et les troisièmes assurent les communications inter-groupes. Nous donnons d’abord quelques propriétés de cette structure combinatoire lorsque le graphe non orienté G est connexe. Puis nous proposons des résultats de complexité pour le problème de la recherche de l’indépendant faiblement connexe de cardinalité minimale (MWCISP). Nous décrivons également un algorithme d’énumération exact de complexité O∗(1.4655|V |) pour le MWCISP. Des tests numériques de cette procédure exacte sont présentés. Nous formulons ensuite le MWCISP comme un programme linéaire en nombres entiers. Le polytope associé aux solutions de ce problème est complètement caractérisé lorsque G est un cycle impair. Nous étudions des opérations de composition de graphes et leurs conséquences polyédrales. Nous introduisons des inégalités valides notamment les contraintes dites de multibord. Par la suite, nous développons un algorithme de coupes et branchement sous CPLEX pour résoudre ce problème en utilisant des heuristiques pour la séparation de nos familles de contraintes. In this work, we focus on a topology for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). A wireless sensor network can be modeled as an undirected graph G = (V,E). Each vertex of V represents a sensor and an edge e = {u, v} in E implies a direct transmission between the two sensors u and v. Unlike wired devices, wireless sensors are not a priori arranged in a network. Topology should be made by selecting some sensor as dominators nodes who manage transmissions. Architectures that have been studied in the literature are mainly based on connected dominating sets and weakly connected dominating sets.This study is devoted to weakly connected independent sets. An independent set S ⊂ V is said Weakly Connected if the graph GS = (V, [S, V \S]) is connected, where [S, V \S] is the set of edges with exactly one end in S. A sensor network topology based on weakly connected sets is partition into three groups, slaves, masters and bridges. The first performs the measurements, the second gathers the collected data and the later provides the inter-group communications. We first give some properties of this combinatorial structure when the undirected graph G is connected. Then we provide complexity results for the problem of finding the minimum weakly connected independent set problem (MWCISP). We also describe an exact enumeration algorithm of complexity O∗(1.4655|V |) (for the (MWCISP)). Numerical tests of this exact procedure are also presented. We then present an integer programming formulation for the minimum weakly connected independent set problem and discuss its associated polytope. Some classical graph operations are also used for defining new polyhedra from pieces. We give valid inequalities and describe heuristical separation algorithms for them. Finally, we develop a branch-and-cut algorithm and test it on two classes of graphs

The " Cult of the Princesses" by the pastor Sarah Sheeva and the tv program "Shielded Marriage" by the journalist Cristiane Cardoso raise questions about female empowerment, it's relationship with the liquid modernity, the media and the the conceptualization of weberian charismatic domination, thinking about the importance of the gender discussion on the religious field, an urgent and needed step. According to this, this dissertation tries to understand the the phenomenon of the charismatic domination of female religious leaders that use the media resources and which are the reason of this acceptance in a time that a revolution in gender relationships have been implemented mainly inside the religious field. In terms of research methodology, it was used a sociological analysis from videos available on their youtube channels, with the general goal to understand the acceptance of a conservative religious speech delivered by social medias. It was concluded that inside the liquid modernity proposed by Zygmunt Bauman, the agreement with the retrograde message, enunciated by two women by the media is accepted, because it proposes a kind of "confort", "safety" to the the ephemeral relations of this society. Contributing to interpret this religious phenomenon that makes pseudo female empowerment throught the binominal of modernity versus tradition.

Chemical senses play a critical role in predator-prey and social interactions of many animals. Predators often evoke adaptive escape responses by prey, one of which is the release of chemicals that induce adaptive avoidance behaviors from both predators and conspecifics. I explore the use of chemicals in predator-prey and social interactions, using a crustacean model system, the spiny lobster. As predators, spiny lobsters are opportunistic, polyphagous feeders, and they rely heavily on their chemical senses during feeding. Some of their potential prey deter attacks through chemical defenses that act through the spiny lobsters’ chemical senses. An example of this is sea hares, Aplysia californica, which secrete an ink when vigorously attacked by sympatric spiny lobsters, Panulirus interruptus. I show that that this ink defends sea hares from spiny lobsters through several mechanisms that include phagomimicry, sensory disruption, and deterrence, and that the ink’s efficacy is enhanced by its naturally high acidity. As prey, spiny lobsters rely heavily on their chemical senses to assess risk from predators. One way to assess risk of predation is through ‘alarm cues’, which are injury-related chemicals. I show that injured Caribbean spiny lobsters, Panulirus argus, release alarm cues in their hemolymph, and that nearby conspecifics detect these cues using olfaction. Hemolymph from conspecifics induces primarily alarm behavior in the form of retreat, sheltering, and suppression of appetitive responses. In contrast, hemolymph from heterospecifics, depending on phylogenetic relatedness, induces either mixed alarm and appetitive behaviors or primarily appetitive behaviors. Spiny lobsters also use chemical cues to assess risk during social interactions with conspecific. I show that spiny lobsters use urine-borne chemical signals and agonistic behaviors to communicate social status and that these chemical signals are detected exclusively by the olfactory pathway. Dominant animals increase urine release during social interactions, whereas subordinates do not. Experimental prevention of urine release during interactions causes an increase in agonism, but this increase is abolished when urine of dominants is reintroduced. My findings lay the foundation for neuroethological studies of risk-assessment systems mediated by intraspecific chemical cues.

This publication provides considerable material for reflection on the subject of Mediterranean Architecture between Heritage and Innovation, demonstrating the wide range of aspects linked to Architectural Technology, in which one is struck by the flexibility of the disciplinary boundaries with regard to the various meanings that can be applied to the concept of resource. Taken together with the previous publications of Osdotta, this consents one to trace the developments in the third level of education at a particularly critical time for the university institution; the emphasis continues to be placed on the crucial issue of supply/demand of research; the situation is compared with other institutions and with the world of production in this sector, in a present-day scenario dominated by ever more rapid and incisive transformations. The main challenges left to be faced are to improve the quality of PhD courses, after due reflection on the immediate and long-term results, whilst defining more precisely the identitary contents of the disciplinary sector.

One-partyism refers to the capture of government institutions by a single political party. This chapter explores the institutions that may be available to promote the virtues of multipartyism in a budding democracy while combating the vices of one-partyism. Specifically it argues that the military may have an incentive to combat one-partyism and, in doing so, promote political pluralism. A dominant party can spell trouble for the military. If a political party becomes too strong, it can threaten the military, cut back the military’s powers, or slash the military’s economic and social privileges. In contrast, by curbing one-partyism, the military may achieve more autonomy. Like the judiciary, the military may find more comfort in the division of political powers that comes with political pluralism. The desire to bring down the dominant party a peg or two may serve as an incentive for the military to promote competition among political parties.

This chapter defends an invariance-based account of laws of nature. In constructing a physical theory one looks for a cut or contrast between laws and initial conditions such that (i) the laws are generalizations that are stable or invariant across variations in initial conditions and (ii) as much order or structure as possible is represented in the laws, while any remaining disorder is relegated to the initial conditions. This picture corresponds to an ideal of explanation in which laws are freely combinable with different initial conditions to answer a range of what the author has elsewhere called a range of what-if things-had-been-different questions. Laws are understood in terms of a conception of explanation which cannot be captured just in terms of simplicity and strength trade-offs imposed on a supposed Humean mosaic. The resulting account of laws is non-reductive and the associated epistemology very different from the dominant Mill-Ramsey-Lewis account.

This chapter discusses localized cognitive functions. The functions ascribed to the dominant, usually left, cerebral hemisphere show much more clear-cut laterality than those associated with the so-called minor hemisphere. This applies particularly to spoken language. This chapter discusses aspects of normal and abnormal language function in the framework of contemporary cognitive neuroscience with descriptions of the classic post-stroke variants of aphasia (Broca’s, Wernicke’s, conduction, etc.) although these are rarely seen in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. There is also a description of disorders of written language (the dyslexias and dysgraphias), of calculation (acalculia), and of higher-order motor control (apraxia). This is followed by descriptions of the syndromes associated with disturbed right hemisphere functions: neglect phenomena, dressing and constructional apraxia, and complex visuoperceptual disorders (agnosias). Each cognitive syndrome is placed in the context of its neural basis, disorders which affect the ability and methods of assessment at the bedside and using neuropsychological tasks.

Sri Ramakrishna is widely known as a nineteenth-century Indian mystic who affirmed the harmony of all religions on the basis of his richly varied spiritual experiences and eclectic religious practices, both Hindu and non-Hindu. In Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality, Ayon Maharaj argues that Sri Ramakrishna was also a sophisticated philosopher of great contemporary relevance. Through a careful study of Sri Ramakrishna’s recorded oral teachings in the original Bengali, Maharaj reconstructs his philosophical positions and analyzes them from a cross-cultural perspective. Sri Ramakrishna’s mystical journey culminated in the exalted state of “vijñāna,” his term for the “intimate knowledge” of God as the Infinite Reality that is both personal and impersonal, with and without form, immanent in the universe and beyond it. This spiritual standpoint of vijñāna, Maharaj contends, opens up a new paradigm for addressing central issues in cross-cultural philosophy of religion, including the infinitude of God, religious diversity, mystical experience, and the problem of evil. Sri Ramakrishna’s vijñāna-based religious pluralism—when grasped in all its subtlety—proves to have major philosophical advantages over dominant Western models. Moreover, his mystical testimony and teachings not only cut across long-standing debates about the nature of mystical experience but also bolster recent defenses of its epistemic value. Maharaj further demonstrates that Sri Ramakrishna’s unique response to the problem of evil resonates strongly with Western “soul-making” theodicies and contemporary theories of skeptical theism.

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is a dominant psychological treatment in the management of a range of psychiatric disorders and is increasingly being refined to suit the needs older adults. This chapter summarises the theory and practice of CBT, with an emphasis on assessment, formulation, and adaptation of treatment with older patients. Management of depressive disorder, anxiety disorders and dementia caregiver distress are described in detail with relevant case examples. Problem-solving therapy and behavioural activation are described. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) has potential benefits in the treatment of older adults. MBCT is described and applications with older people are reviewed. Newer applications are outlined, including treatment of psychological symptoms associated with physical illness, psychosis and memory impairment. The evidence base for CBT-based interventions with older adults is limited; the limitations and extent of the current evidence are reviewed.

AbstractThis chapter discusses student perceptions in terms of three psychometric perspectives that dominate contemporary research on teaching quality, namely, Classical Test Theory (CTT), Item Response Theory (IRT) and Generalizability Theory (GT). These perspectives function as being exemplars for the connection between psychometric theories and the different perspectives on “what a perception is” as well as on how and for what purposes student perceptions should be used. The main message of the chapter is that the choice of a psychometric theory is not merely a technical matter, but also has implications for how the nature of perceptions is conceptualized. After presenting and linking each psychometric theory, their strengths and weaknesses in the context of student perceptions of teaching quality and issues on practical implementations are discussed.

AbstractDenmark, Sweden and Finland are Nordic welfare states that historically have put a high value on both basic and adult education. Citizens should have equal opportunities to participate in education and society. Adult education has been a topical means to include citizens in active societal participation. This has been realised by providing special support for those in need. Currently, the dominance of neo-liberal market economies has challenged this educational ideology, and adult education has increasingly become reduced to only one of its functions, that of employability. Besides formal education, even informal learning has been harnessed for developing and maintaining work-related skills. Budget cuts have affected adult education while resources have increased on guidance and counselling, transition from basic to upper secondary education, education for the low-skilled and continuing training for workforce. Drawing on the history and present challenges this chapter discusses the possibilities to strengthen social inclusion through adult education. In the focus are groups that are at risk of staying outside the education society. The consequences of unfinished basic education and recently the educational needs of migrants and asylum seekers have revealed the largely unattended challenges of young adults and the vulnerability involved in comparison to the relatively high educated mainstream population. Our research focusing on social inclusion of vulnerable groups through differentiated support activities provides space to discuss, how adult education may regain its leading role in enhancing equal opportunities towards active political, social and economic participation in the Nordic societies.

Metal working fluids remain in common use throughout many industries where metal cutting is necessary. Optimizing the use of a metal working fluid must balance environmental needs, production needs and economic needs. An orthogonal tube turning machining experiment on 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was conducted to study the performance of uncoated carbide tool inserts utilizing cold compressed air and liquid nitrogen environments as the metal working fluid of choice. The tool inserts selected for this study did not have any chip breaker and studied at 3 different rake angles of 0°, 7° and 15°. Aluminum alloy 6061-T6 was used because of its commercially dominant availability and usage. Cold cryogenic cooling was selected because of its growing usage in high performance machining applications. The use of cold compressed air has been much less studied in the machining of metals than in the machining of plastics and composites where it is quite commonly used. The comparisons between these two methods represent the first published values comparing the current extremes of gaseous metal working fluid applications in a commercially dominant aluminum alloy. This statistically designed experiment produced a large amount of comparative data that focused on the wear of the tools in two different cutting environments allowing for multivariate analysis of variance and regressive curve fitting. The orthogonal tube turning was set up on a conventional two axis HAAS TL-2 CNC tool room lathe. Forces were collected utilizing a standard Kistler force dynamometer to record the force data in X, Y and Z axes. Two levels of uncut chip thickness, 0.002” and 0.004” per revolution were maintained with a constant feed and depth of cut of 0.125”. Tool rake angles and depth of cuts were selected to ensure maximum statistical power / decisiveness of the experiment. The experiment was carried out for duration of 1 minute while the force data was collected for the entire duration of cut. New tool insert was used for each factor level combination. The traditional force analysis results are provided for an orthogonal tube turning experiment. In addition, all tools were analyzed for 3-dimensional rake face wear using an innovative Keyence white light microscope in conjunction with a Dektak surface profilometer. Although cutting forces were statistically the same, the inexpensive, simple cold compressed air produced less rake wear than the more expensive liquid nitrogen for all cutting factor level combinations. There was no measureable benefit in using the more expensive liquid nitrogen system.

As a supporting organization for risk activities at a variety of government agencies including the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Department of Energy (DOE), the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has been a principal developer of probabilistic risk and reliability analysis tools for over 35 years. The current state-of-the-practice has evolved to the use of the SAPHIRE software. This tool started in the mid-1980s as part of the NRC’s general risk activities. In 1986, work commenced on the precursor to the SAPHIRE software — this software package was named IRRAS. While limited to the analysis of only fault trees of medium size, version 1 of IRRAS was the initial step in the progress that today has led to the SAPHIRE software, software that is capable of running on multiple processors simultaneously and is able to handle extremely complex analyses. SAPHIRE has been designed to handle large fault trees, where a tree may have up to 64,000 basic events and gates. To handle the fault trees, two mechanisms for developing and modifying the fault tree are available — a graphical editor and a hierarchical logic editor. In risk applications, there are two predominant event tree analysis methods, the “large event tree” approach and the “fault tree linking” approach. A couple of key identifying attributes of the large event tree approach is that the number of accident sequences becomes very large (measured in the millions or more) and the event tree branches are represented by probability values. For the fault tree linking approach, the number of sequences is low and fault trees represent the event tree branch points. The INL has designed SAPHIRE to handle both event tree methods. SAPHIRE uses logic models to determine minimal cut sets. Once the dominant cut sets are determined, the group of cut sets must be quantified to determine the overall probability of frequency. After the cut sets are generated, they are used to obtain the importance measures for each basic event in the cut sets. The resultant cut sets are also used to propagate (using either Monte Carlo or Latin Hypercube sampling) the basic event’s epistemic uncertainty.

There is a wide application of squirrel cage fan in heating and ventilating systems where a reduction of noise with fluid mechanics origin is of importance. This paper presents an aero-acoustic study on a squirrel-cage fan and the relation between unsteady fluid flow and the noise generated in the fan is investigated. Noise measurements in the exit channel of a fan are presented together with laser Doppler velocity measurements outside the rotor. Both measurements are Fourier transformed and important frequency contents are analyzed. Velocity measurements show that the largest fluctuations happen just after the inlet and close to the cut-off. The power spectra of velocity components near the rotor inlet and the cut off are high in comparison with other circumferential and axial positions. Blade passing frequency is dominant in noise and velocity data with a considerable volume of white band noise. It is not present at locations with no flow through the rotor. Fan performance and noise are available for different inlet geometries. An optimization of the inlet configuration changed the maximum flow rate but the sound power level was similar at the same volumetric flow regardless of the inlet shape.

Abstract At present, the Bohai Oilfield has entered the late stage of high water cut, with a high degree of flooding and an average water cut of more than 80%. Horizontal wells were widely used in tapping the potentials of high water-cut oilfields with avoiding local water flooding, accurately develop enrichment of remaining oil, and improving initial productivity. Until 2020, there are more than 1,200 horizontal wells in the Bohai Oilfield, with daily production accounting for more than 40% of the entire oilfield. However, mainly continental deposits, strong heterogeneity, heavy oil, relatively large mobility ratio, long-term water flooding, and large liquid production have resulted in the obvious dominant channels in the formation, intensified ineffective water circulation, and low oil recovery. The application of horizontal wells faces huge challenges due to the serious water flooding and the prevalence of thief zones. Inflow Control Device (ICD) is becoming more and more prevalent in bottom water reservoirs as it can delay the water breakthrough and significantly improve the economic benefit of a project by producing more oil and less water. The strong microscopic heterogeneity along the horizontal water channeling outside the screen or water channeling along the annulus between the screen and ICD tubular is responsible for the short term even ineffective effect of conventional ICD. Based on the review of the conventional ICD application in the Q oilfield, a workflow is present to design and optimize hybrid ICD to increase the success probability of the validity period of water control.

Abstract This paper reports on the optimization and prediction of the surface roughness and cutting force in the turning of UHMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene). To identify the controllable factors in turning UHMWPE, that can minimize the variation of the surface roughness and cutting force, a three-level full factorial design, considering the feed rate, depth of cut, and cutting speed was conducted. The Taguchi method and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) were employed for establishing a relationship between the input and output parameters, whereas the significance of each parameter was analyzed using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). A four-layer Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model with a back-propagation algorithm and a sigmoidal transfer function and two hidden layers was developed for simultaneous prediction of surface roughness and cutting force. The results of the ANOVA of the surface roughness indicated that the feed rate is the dominant parameter followed by cutting speed and depth of cut, whereas the main cutting force is significantly affected by all three cutting parameters. The advantage of the ANN over the RSM is that the former can be used to simultaneously predict the surface roughness and cutting force, providing the most accurate estimates of the surface roughness and cutting force.

Анотація:
Here the End milling is studied for optimization of responses such as surface roughness and tool wear while machining HCHCr. These two conflicting responses decide the quality of process; therefore the multiobjective optimization technique is used. The Response Surface Optimizer (RSMO) and Multiobjective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) were used as the multiobjective optimization techniques. The PVD coating of 2.5 micron AlCrN was used on four flute HSS End milling cutter. Input machining parameters were cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut and percentage concentration of the solid lubricant MoS2 mixed with SAE-20 base oil. The experimentation was carried out using two level full factorial design concept while ANOVA technique has been used to verify the adequacy of mathematical model. It was found that the cutting speed (V) is having most dominant role on surface roughness and tool wear. The sensitivity analysis was carried out for studying sensitivity of input parameters for the responses.

Rods of a Cr-V alloyed heat treatable steel in a soft annealed condition were locally heated to a temperature above austenization temperature and then subjected to an integrated forming and cooling procedure. The resulting component possesses a graded microstructure consisting of martensite, deformed base material and a transition phase with mixed microstructure. Miniature specimens were cut from this component which allowed assessing the local properties of the graded steel both under tensile loading and under cyclic loading. The martensite region had high strength and showed comparatively long lifetimes. The dominant damage accumulation process was identified to be crack initiation from local defects. The base material, on the other hand, contained numerous crack initiation sites. In-situ observation of the damage accumulation process on the surface showed how macroscopic cracks were formed by microcrack growth and coalescence. It is shown how these findings can be incorporated into a mechanism-based lifetime model.

For marine structures subjected to environmental loads (i.e. waves, current, wind), the fatigue damage and long-term response characteristics can frequenlty expressed in terms of the environmental parameters by polynomial response surfaces. For both types of “response”, an integration across the range of variation for all the environmental parameters is required. The location of the intervals which give rise to the dominant contribution to these integrals is studied. Convergence studies are performed by applying response surfaces of increasing order, from linear to cubic expressions. In addition, response surfaces with lower cut-off limits at specific values for the environmental parameters are also investigated. Having obtained general expressions on non-dimensional form, various examples which correspond to specific response quantities for marine structures are considered. Typical values for the polynomial coefficients, and for the statistical distributions representing the environmental parameters, are applied. Convergence studies are subsequently performed for the particular example response quantities which are considered in order to make comparison with the general formulation. For the extreme response, the application of “extreme contours” obtained from the statistical distributions of the environmental parameters in combination with the response surface is explored.
