Parallelization is essential for the effective use of modern high-performance computing facilities. This chapter summarizes some of the basic approaches that are commonly used in molecular simulation programs. The underlying shared-memory and distributed-memory architectures are explained. The concept of program threads and their use in parallelizing nested loops on a shared memory machine is described. Parallel tempering using message passing on a distributed memory machine is discussed and illustrated with an example code. Domain decomposition, and the implementation of constraints on parallel computers, are also explained.

Defying the conventional split between “theory” and “methodology,” this book introduces a yet unarticulated and thus far never systematized method of theorizing designed to reveal abstract social patterns. Insisting that such methodology can actually be taught, it tries to make the mental processes underlying the practice of a “concept-driven sociology” more explicit. Many sociologists tend to study the specific, often at the expense of also studying the generic. To correct this imbalance, the book examines the theoretico-methodological process by which we can “distill” generic social patterns from the culturally, historically, and situationally specific contexts in which we encounter them. It thus champions a “generic sociology” that is pronouncedly transcontextual (transcultural, transhistorical, transsituational, and translevel) in its scope. In order to uncover generic, transcontextual social patterns, data need to be collected in a wide range of social contexts. Such contextual diversity is manifested multi-culturally, multihistorically, multisituationally, as well as at multiple levels of social aggregation. True to its message, the book illustrates generic social patterns by drawing on numerous examples from diverse cultural contexts and historical periods and a wide range of diverse social domains, as well as by disregarding scale. Emphasizing cross-contextual commonality, generic sociology tries to reveal formal “parallels” across seemingly disparate contexts. This book features the four main types of cross-contextual analogies generic sociologists tend to use (cross-cultural, cross-historical, cross-domain, and cross-level), disregarding conventionally noted substantive differences in order to note conventionally disregarded formal equivalences.

The book Functional English can be viewed as an introductory reading in the domain of functional language, or language used in order to perform certain communicative purposes. Functional language is a concept normally connected with foreign language learners of lower levels and with problems in achieving the designated standards in terms of the four basic language skills. The book is meant to provide a description of the subject matter of Functional English by establishing the basics, as well as the main features and elements of this linguistic domain. The overall objective of the book is to help with the understanding of existing language features sometimes taken for granted, and which may cause communication difficulties. Simultaneously, its ambition is to enable all the interested parties to reaffirm the foundations and build on the existing language repository, in an attempt to achieve a higher level of competence in English used to perform different communicative functions. The term practical language skills within Functional English entails the ability to formulate or articulate one’s communicative message, as well as the ability to interpret correctly or relay clearly to other parties any verbal material relevant to the process of communication. Moreover, being competent in Functional English means being able to select the adequate communication channel or method, where the key factors are the linguistic devices employed, the correlation between the language used and the intended goal, as well as the context of situation and its relation to the audience or the participants in the verbal interaction.

Abstract The material in The Cognitive Unconscious began as a master’s thesis that examined the manner in which knowledge of fairly complex, patterned material could be acquired without any conscious effort to learn it and with little to no awareness of what had been learned. It was dubbed implicit learning and, over more than fifty years, became a vigorously researched area in the social sciences. The Cognitive Unconscious brings together several dozen scientists from a variety of backgrounds and presents a broad (and deep) overview of how the exploration of the cognitive unconscious grew from that first study to a domain of research to which contributions have been made by sociologists, neuroscientists, evolutionary biologists, modelers, social and organizational psychologists, sport psychologists, primatologists, developmentalists, linguists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists, and measurement and assessment researchers. The core message seems fairly straightforward. Unconscious, implicit cognitive processes play a role in virtually everything interesting that human beings do. The implicit and explicit elements of cognition form a rich and complex interactive framework that make up who we are. The volume has contributions from over thirty distinguished authors from nine different countries and gives a balanced and thorough overview of where the field is today, a bit over a half-century since the first experiments were run.

Topics and harmonic schemata powerfully interact in the late eighteenth-century communicative channel. This chapter illustrates both a categorial and pragmatic interfacing of the two domains in Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony, where a particular schema, thele–sol–fi–sol(Byros 2012, 2009), enables the communication of a powerful philosophical message involving the spiritual consequences of suffering, self-sacrifice, and death. Thele–sol–fi–sol, as an instance of harmonic grammar, is closely related to theombratopic with mortal, funereal, and sacrificial connotations. As a hybrid symbolic structure, this schema–topic amalgam is the basis for establishing a number of correlations of oppositions in the structural and expressive domains of the symphony, which communicate a “tragic-to-transcendent” expressive genre and the cultural unit of “abnegation” (Hatten 1994).

Grâce à la vaccination, la variole a été éradiquée en 1980 et nous sommes sur la bonne voie pour éradiquer la polio. Cependant, malgré de grands progrès dans la lutte contre la rougeole, l’une des maladies les plus contagieuses connues, une augmentation des cas a été malheureusement observée ces dernières années. Raison pour laquelle une couverture vaccinale élevée (95 % ou plus) est nécessaire en dépit du défi technique et de communication majeur que cette couverture pose au personnel de santé. Des études montrent que le fait d’informer les personnes sur la qualité, la sécurité, l’efficacité et la disponibilité des vaccins ne suffit pas à modifier les comportements en matière de vaccination et, en général, n’augmente pas la couverture vaccinale. Pour cette raison, nous devons comprendre les raisons pour lesquelles les personnes choisissent de ne pas se faire vacciner ou de ne pas faire vacciner leurs enfants, afin d’entamer un dialogue respectueux à l’aide de messages le mieux adaptés et les plus efficaces. Dans ce contexte, le principal objectif de ces lignes directrices est de fournir des outils au personnel qui travaille dans le domaine de la vaccination afin de favoriser une communication efficace entre le personnel de santé et la population, de manière à renforcer, maintenir ou rétablir la confiance dans les vaccins et les programmes de vaccination dans la Région des Amériques.

This book focuses on the variability of metacognitive skills across cultures. Metacognition refers to the processes that enable agents to contextually control their first-order cognitive activity (e.g. perceiving, remembering, learning, or problem-solving) by monitoring them, i.e. assessing their likely success. It is involved in our daily observations, such as “I don’t remember where my keys are,” or “I understand your point.” These assessments may rely either on specialized feelings (e.g. the felt fluency involved in distinguishing familiar from new environments, informative from repetitive messages, difficult from easy cognitive tasks) or on folk theories about one’s own mental abilities. Variable and universal features associated with these dimensions are documented, using anthropological, linguistic, neuroscientific, and psychological evidence. Among the universal cross-cultural aspects of metacognition, children are found to be more sensitive to their own ignorance than to that of others, adults have an intuitive understanding of what counts as knowledge, and speakers are sensitive to the reliability of informational sources (independently of the way the information is linguistically expressed). On the other hand, an agent’s decisions to allocate effort, motivation to learn, and sense of being right or wrong in perceptions and memories (and other cognitive tasks) are shown to depend on specific transmitted goals, norms, and values. Metacognitive variability is seen to be modulated (among other factors) by variation in attention patterns (analytic or holistic), self-concepts (independent or interdependent), agentive properties (autonomous or heteronomous), childrearing style (individual or collective), and modes of learning (observational or pedagogical). New domains of metacognitive variability are studied, such as those generated by metacognition-oriented embodied practices (present in rituals and religious worship) and by culture-specific lay theories about subjective uncertainty and knowledge regarding natural or supernatural entities.
