Hopwood-Wallace, Shirley E. "Documented symptoms in children exposed to domestic violence." Thesis, McGill University, 2010. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=86614.
"Children exposed to domestic violence: Assessment and psychopathology." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/5469.
Exposure to domestic violence is a current, complex concern with negative aftermath on the child's mental health. Aim: to answer the following questions about the effects that this exposure has on children's mental health: a) what should be assessed; b) what kind of psychopathology do outpatient exposed children have; c) which characteristics of the situation are more influential; and d) what is the role of parenting styles. Method: A retrospective cohort design was used; one cohort was formed by battered mothers attending to a special center for battered women and their children, and the other was formed by non-battered women and non-exposed children. Diagnostic interviews, self-reports and questionnaires were applied to mothers and children in order to assess child's functioning, psychopathology, individual and family variables. Logistic regression, ANOVAs, structural equation models, and generalized estimating equations were used for the statistical analysis. Results: An assessment schedule for children exposed to domestic violence is suggested. Outpatient children exposed to domestic violence had specific needs compared with non-exposed outpatients, regarding psychopathology, functional impairment, family and individual variables. Characteristics of the violence, as the type of violence against the mother or the child, the degree of involvement of the child, or the aggressor's characteristics, affected differentially on the child's psychopathology and functioning. Maternal parenting mediated the effects of psychological abuse against the mother on the child's wellbeing, whereas father's parenting did not moderate these effects. Conclusions: Efforts in order to detect and intervene in domestic violence situations should be made in order to improve the child's well-being.

Exposure to parental intimate partner violence (IPV) has been shown to be negatively correlated with children’s behavioral, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical outcomes. Yet, research studying the impact of IPV exposure on students’ academic performance is scarce, and the findings from the limited literature do not converge. This study aimed to examine the relationship between exposure to IPV and academic performance, and whether parental academic involvement and school support will combat the negative academic outcomes of children exposed to IPV. Results indicated that exposure to IPV was not associated with academic performance, and parental academic involvement and school support were not protective factors. However, it revealed a complex relationship between exposure to IPV, parental academic involvement, and school support that warrants further investigation by future studies. Understanding the influences that home interactions may have on students’ school functioning can be helpful in creating supportive interventions to support at-risk students.

Researchers have examined the experience of distress with refugee children and adolescents who have been exposed to political violence. Recognition has also been given to migration stress and traumatic grief as additional stressors in the lives of refugee youth. Studies in this area have established the fact that development appears to influence the expression of distress in youth who have experienced adverse experiences such as political violence. Reaction to political violence and the refugee experience also appear mediated by culture as well as other contextual factors such as the nature of the violence. The purpose of this study was to focus on clinician conceptualizations of refugee youth who have been exposed to political violence, as well as the factors that contribute to developing their conceptualizations. A total of 6 clinicians were interviewed and were analyzed using qualitative methods to identify emergent themes. The clinicians addressed 6 major themes associated with conceptualization, including sources of information, formal assessment, conceptualization, cultural factors or cultural influences, and advice to clinicians working with refugee youth. Three subthemes emerged regarding conceptualization, namely trauma- based conceptualization, loss, and resiliency. It is hoped that the results of this study will bridge the gap between clinicians and researchers regarding refugee minors with exposure to refugee youth.

Abstract
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is highly prevalent in Pakistan. Social support is associated with a reduced risk for violence and adverse mental health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between social support and the occurrence of IPV and adverse mental health among Pakistani women exposed to IPV, along with exploring help-seeking behaviour using qualitative interviews. Data from a cross-sectional survey of 759 women, aged 25–60, were analyzed using logistic regression. The results demonstrated that informal social support was associated with fewer occurrences of all forms of IPV and less likelihood of adverse mental health when exposed to psychological violence, whereas formal social support was associated with more occurrences of all forms of IPV and more likelihood of adverse mental health when exposed to psychological violence. The qualitative result showed that fear of social stigma and low autonomy were, among others, obstacles for seeking help. Suggestions for future interventions include strengthening informal social networks and expanding formal resources, as well as raising awareness of IPV in order to address the issue.

The current study examined the effectiveness of GTREM, a group treatment for urban Black adolescent females exposed to violence on their symptoms of aggression, anger, and depression. Aggression was measured using the Aggression Questionnaire- AQ (Buss and Warren, 2000). Depressive symptoms were measured using the Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale-2-RADS-2 (Reynolds, 2002). Participants consisted of 110 urban Black adolescent females selected from six DC Public and Public Charter Schools. Results confirmed that the G-TREM group treatment significantly decreased the externalizing behaviors of aggression and anger and the internalizing symptoms of depressive symptoms for urban black females exposed to violence. The results indicated that the differences in decrease of symptoms experienced by the G-TREM participants were meaningful. One final result showed that treatment was more effective as participants' grade level increased.

This research study evaluated the modified gap analysis of knowledge and skills, motivation, and organization on how low socioeconomic status (SES) Black male students who were exposed to community violence and participated in Our Kids, a pseudonym for a non-profit community based organization that provides extracurricular programs to at-risk males. The purpose of this study is to understand how the in-school violent behavior of low SES Black males affects these students’ abilities to realize future goals. Using the Clark and Estes (2008) gap analysis, the collection of data from interviews and documents identified and validated the source of the students’ performance gaps. Findings revealed that the urban school district had positive and negative aspects in its current program that addressed students’ in-school violent behavior. Overall, the findings exposed that the students in the study had procedural knowledge, knowledge of self-regulation and support their increase in knowledge of self-identity even though the documents exposed that Black male students may lack self-regulation. The students had self-efficacy and students’ emotions influence their motivation. The students believe that there is racial equities and opportunities to build trusting relationships but urban school district created a threatening environment. Yet, the documents show racial inequities. This research study recommends research-based solutions to assist organizations in decreasing in-school violent behavior. Finally, Our Kids can utilize the modified gap analysis model to identify and validate causes of performance gaps and recommend solutions.

Domestic partner violence is violence in a partner relationship. Earlier research on domestic partner violence mainly focus on the violence against women, with male perpetrators. Male victims exposed to partner violence are rarely discussed, and research of the subject is limited. The purpose of this study is to investigate attitudes and assessments made by social workers who in their work encounter domestic partner violence, and if the social workers are affected depending on whether the person exposed to partner violence is a man or a woman. A quantitative vignette method with accompanying survey questions were used to investigate differences. Two separate groups of respondents answered survey questions based on vignettes divided into two parts. The respondents are each introduced in the vignettes to a heterosexual couple with a problem of partner violence. These vignettes are identical except for the characters’ genders which have been swapped. The result reveals that violence towards the victimized man is considered less serious, that there is less risk of continued violence in the relationship and that the victimized man is in less need of individual interventions. Respondents also considered to a lesser extent that the female perpetrator needed individual interventions compared to the male perpetrator. Social constructivism and gender theory are the theories used to interpret these results. The study can add perspectives about the subject of male victims and highlight that assessments of people exposed to partner violence may differ depending on the victim’s gender.

The purpose of this project was to locate a potential funding source and write a grant for early mental health services for children 0 to 5 years old exposed to interpersonal violence. An extensive literature review was conducted to understand the impact of interpersonal violence on young children, as well as evidence-based therapies for this population.
The goals of the proposed program are to strengthen the parent-child bond and thus minimize the child’s emotional, psychological, and behavioral issues caused by interpersonal violence. Parent-child therapy would be provided in the home so that the child is in a familiar environment and the parent can witness positive parenting skills, as taught by the therapist in a real world scenario.
The John and Lisa Pritzker family fund was chosen to support the program. The actual submission of the grant was not a requirement of the thesis project.

Background: The encounter with patients is a central part of the nurses’ occupation and these are held with people in a variety of life situations. In the meeting, the nursing needs must be addressed both physically, psychologically, socially and culturally. Women exposed to violence seek healthcare in greater extent than others and nurses have a significant role in identifying these and providing the nursing they need. Purpose: To shed light over possibilities and challenges occured in the meeting between women exposed to violence and nurses in the caring environment. Method: A literature review with analysis of nine scientific articles with both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Results: Education, factors related to work environment, routines and management support are aspects of an organizational level where both opportunities and challenges could be identified in the meeting between nurses and women exposed to violence. On an individual level, attitudes and knowledge can present dito. Clinical relevance: The literature study provides a clear picture of the opportunities and challenges that arise in the encounter between women exposed to violence and nurses. The experiences found in the compiled result proved to be recurring in a majority of the subcategories and can be used in the nurse's work for reflection and the opportunity to establish a good meeting for these women with health care. Even the challenges raised can be important areas for improvement work both individually and at an organizational level
