Abstract Survey lines were located in areas that had been pruned to control blister rust (Cronartium ribicola) 10 yr previously and adjacent control (unpruned) areas in 10 stands of western white pine. Stands were classified as densely stocked, moderately stocked, or open. Cankers were tallied and their position noted. The success of pruning varied from stand to stand. Openings created in the forest canopy as a result of the decline of sugar maple (Acersaccharum Marsh.) may increase microsite heterogeneity and favor the growth of tree seedlings on the forest floor and possibly neighboring healthy trees because of resource release. Roots of 50 healthy-appearing dominant or codominant aspen suckers were examined for signs of Armillaria root rot in each of nine stands (three each 3, 9, or 15 years after clear-cutting). The accuracy of ARBOTOM® 3-D tree tomograph in detecting decay was evaluated for 703 standing trees in 27 Norway spruce (Picea abies) stands. It compares outcomes of adults without health insurance versus their insured counterparts, before and after policy implementation.
