Building on the main tenets of labor process theory, this study introduces perceived location autonomy (PLA)—the autonomy to generate, evaluate, and choose where to perform one’s work tasks—and tests the relationships between PLA and worker productivity and well-being. Using a sample of academic knowledge workers ( n = 319), our results suggest that workers experiencing higher PLA choose work environments to enhance both their productivity and their well-being through increased intrinsic motivation. Consistent with labor process theory, PLA acts as a form of empowerment that aligns knowledge worker and organizational goals to realize productivity gains while simultaneously allowing workers to enhance well-being. Together, these results suggest that managers may wish to consider integrating PLA into job and organizational design, as an alternative to control, as an effective strategy for boosting knowledge worker productivity and well-being.

Individuals' knowledge activity is essential for knowledge circulation in organizations. To examine the relationship between knowledge-based psychological ownership and knowledge hiding, we conducted a threewave online survey with 310 knowledge workers in China. We used the bootstrapping method for mediation effects analysis and found that loss of knowledge power mediated the effect of knowledge-based psychological ownership on knowledge hiding. The results of a conditional process analysis further indicate that emotional intelligence attenuated the indirect impact of knowledge-based psychological ownership on knowledge hiding through the mediator of loss of knowledge power. Our findings enhance understanding of why workers refuse to share their knowledge, and how to decrease knowledge-hiding behaviors in organizations by developing employees' emotional competency.

This study aimed at identifying the relation of organizational climate and its dimensions from the PMCO measuring test for organizational climate (Cardenas & Villamizar, 2008, as cited in Cardenas, Arciniegas y Barrera, 2009) - in knowledge-sharing behavior, which was measured from the psychosocial variables and organizational conditions of knowledge-sharing behavior test (Castañeda y Fernandez, 2007). 100 participants from two types of organizations participated on this study: one of private nature and one public. A correlation of 0.578 between organizational climate and knowledge-sharing behavior was found. When carrying out an analysis of each organization, it was evident that the level of correlation between climate and knowledge-sharing behavior was highly significant in the public organization: There was a reliability level higher to 99%. There was no correlation found between the two variables studied in the private organization -with an r of 0.093 to 95%. As for the dimensions of climate and knowledge-sharing behavior, the results showed that in all public universities (including level of work, which got the lowest relation) these are statistically significant to 99.9%. In the private university only a relation to the personal growth dimension of 95% was found.

The main way in which knowledge workers' interpersonal skills affect their innovation performances during collaborations was investigated including the relationships among the orientation of the collaborations of which the knowledge workers were part, their interpersonal skills, and their innovation performances. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted on data gathered from a sample of 130 usable dyadic questionnaires completed by R&D engineers and their managers in Taiwanese high-tech industries. The 2 main empirical results are: first, both customer orientation and technology orientation of collaborations make significant contributions to engineers' innovation performances; second, engineers' interpersonal skills significantly moderate the influences of customer orientation of collaborations on their innovation performances, but do not significantly moderate the influences from the technology orientation of collaborations.

Knowledge sharing behavior does not occur naturally and easily. In this study, I hypothesized that knowledge workers would be more likely to share knowledge if they were satisfied with knowledge-sharing behavior. This positive attitude was labeled knowledge-sharing satisfaction (KSS). Drawing upon social exchange theory and motivation theory, I examined the relationship between KSS and knowledge-sharing behavior. Using survey data from participants employed in research and development departments at knowledge-intensive high-technology companies in Taiwan, I demonstrated that satisfaction of the need for a friendly sharing environment and satisfaction of intrinsic and altruistic motivation are positively related to knowledge-sharing behavior. These findings contribute to researchers' understanding of the antecedents of employee knowledge-sharing behavior.

The role of superior human capital in creating and maintaining competitive advantage in the global marketplace is an increasing priority. The problem for business leaders is that despite the purported benefits of superior human capital, contemporary human capital assessments prove incapable of reliably identifying the best employees to hire, promote, or retain. Research into the use of mental models as a means to differentiate expert and novice performers suggested that a simple and reliable means of eliciting and comparing mental models might address this gap. Prior studies following the Structural Dimensional Analysis of Mental Representations (SDA-M) methodology produced reliable and repeatable differentiation of expert and novice performers in professional sports, but had not been applied to the knowledge-work driving today’s businesses. The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental study was to evaluate the use of SDA-M in the identification and classification of expert knowledge workers. Specifically, this research sought to answer two specific research questions concerning the use of SDA-M: what is the similarity of expert knowledge worker mental models produced via SDA-M analysis; and, what is the similarity of novice knowledge worker mental models when compared to those of experts? Following the SDA-M methodology, customer support personnel purposefully selected to represent expert (n = 6) and novice (n = 6) performers completed a sorting task designed to elicit and record individual mental models of a critical job task. Experts were selected from senior-level positions with a minimum of five years organizational tenure; novices were selected from entry-level positions with no more than one year of organizational tenure. The individual mental models where then compared using Qsplit to determine the degree of similarity between them. SDA-M analysis proved ineffective at differentiating expert and novice performers on the study stimulus task. Although SDA-M analysis differentiated subjects into two groups, these groups did not align with the ex ante definitions of expert and novice performers. Additional analysis suggested an incompatibility between the job task selected for eliciting mental models and the criteria used in sampling; industry tenure proved a better indicator of expert performance of the study task than organizational tenure. Although the results of this study can only be considered inconclusive, SDA-M analysis demonstrated the ability to clearly differentiate participants based on the structure and consistency of their mental model constructions. Continued research into the use of SDA-M as a means to identify superior human capital is warranted.

With the increased number of childcare centres in Thailand, the role of nursery workers has become pivotal to promoting optimal child development. The importance of learning though play is generally not recognised as an important factor in promoting child growth by nursery workers in Thailand. This aim of this study was to enhance the knowledge and attitudes of Thai nursery workers towards play and the play environment by using a multimedia teaching package (MMTP). Based on a pragmatic paradigm using mixed methods approach, this study was broken down into two phases: 1) the design of the MMTP based on a content analysis of UK and Thai curricula for training Thai nursery workers, and 2) evaluating the effectiveness of the MMTP by comparing knowledge and attitudes among three sample groups of Thai nursery workers. Three sample groups consisted of a total of 226 Thai nursery workers: 1) those who received the MMTP training, 2) those who received no training and 3) those who only received official government training. Data collection was conducted over three periods: before training, immediately after training and four weeks after training. Nursery workers from the first group, who had received the MMTP training, were found to have a significant improvement in knowledge and attitudes towards the importance of play and the play environment immediately after training. The improvements increased even further after four weeks. On the other hand, there were no comparable changes in the other two groups (those who did not have any training or had only official government training). Five weeks after training, semi-structured interviews were carried out with eight participants from the first sample group. These provided insights into lessons learned from three main areas: 1) participating in the MMTP training, 2) applying the MMTP to work at childcare centres and 3) barriers that occurred as a result of using the MMTP. The findings indicated that the MMTP had a positive effect on the knowledge and attitudes of Thai nursery workers towards the importance of play and the play environment as a means to promote child development. It was concluded that using the MMTP training package to train all nursery workers in Thailand may improve knowledge and attitudes towards play and the play environment and would have the potential to enhance child development in the future.

This dissertation examines localization of Open Educational Resources (OER) in Himalayan community technology centers of Nepal. Specifically, I examine strategies and practices that local knowledge-workers utilize in order to localize educational content for the disparate needs, interests, and ability-levels of learners in rural villages. This study draws on insights from non-formal education (NFE) stakeholders in Nepal, including government, UN, international and national NGOs, local knowledge-workers, and learners from different villages. I specifically focus on a sample of seven technology centers to better understand how localization is defined, designed, and executed at a ground level. I illuminate obstacles knowledge-workers face while localizing content and strategies to overcome such barriers. I conclude by offering key principles to support theory development related to OER localization. This study is anchored in hermeneutic inquiry and is augmented by interpretive phenomenological analysis and quasi-ethnographic research methods. This qualitative study employed interviews, focus group discussions, observations, and artifact reviews to identify patterns of localization practices and themes related to localization of critical content in Himalayan community technology centers of Nepal. This dissertation provides valuable evidence not only why localization matters (a statement that has been hypothesized for the past decade); but also provides proof of how localization is executed and concrete ways that localization could be improved in order for OER to reap efficacious learning gains for more rural people in developing countries and in other rural communities across the globe. Thesis (MPhil (Industrial Psychology. Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study sought to establish the level of knowledge of people on the medical benefits of male circumcision, especially the protective effect against HIV, with the aim of gathering baseline information on the subject for future health promotion programmes. A cross-section survey was conducted at Border Timbers Limited forest management units with 220 respondents that were conveniently selected into the study, and of these 49% were males and the reminder females. The data were collected using two questionnaires; one for females and the other for males. The data was analyzed using an Epi Info programme. The findings showed that, there was little knowledge on the benefits of male circumcision as they scored an average score of three out of eight, and 66% scored less than 50%. Striking was that that females were more knowledgeable than their male counterparts. Less than 20% knew of the protective effect of male circumcision against HIV. Fifty eight percent of the respondents had negative perceptions of the procedure, and 55% of the respondents were of the opinion that, male circumcision should be stopped with as little as twenty percent of the uncircumcised men willing to be circumcised. Under a third of the total respondents (26.7%) expressed their willingness to circumcise their male children. Medically conducted circumcision was preferred by 95% of the respondents over traditionally conducted circumcision. Based on the above; the study concluded that, raising people's knowledge on benefits of male circumcision would help in changing people's perceptions and increase the acceptability of the procedure. It is recommended that the government together with the private sector urgently need to carry awareness campaigns to raise workplace on how male circumcision can reduce chances of getting HIV. Furthermore, traditional circumcision practice should be encouraged and the practitioners trained to carry the procedure in a safe way. Further studies are recommended to assess the impact of stigma on the already circumcised in order to effectively plan and overcome societal barriers for the recommended strategies to make an impact.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Nigeria has the second highest disease burden of HIV/AIDS in sub Saharan Africa after South Africa with adult HIV prevalence of 4.1%, with an estimated 3,130 million people living with HIV (Male-1,320,000: Female-1,820,000-2010) (FMOH, 2010). The HIV epidemic in Cross River state is 7.1% in 2010; and ranks as the 9th highest in the country. General Hospital Ogoja is one of the secondary level hospitals in Cross River State of Nigeria that offers Comprehensive HIV/AIDS services. Although the prevalence of HIV is very high in Cross River state (7%) that of General Hospital is not readily known. The uptake of HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT) among health care workers is relatively low, despite the fact that the awareness of HIV and AIDS in Nigeria by adult population is said to be generally very high (93.8%).The use of condom in the last sex act was low (16%) despite the fact that sexual transmission is the predominant mode of HIV spread in Nigeria (NARHS 2007) To determine whether the knowledge health care workers in GH Ogoja have about HIV/AIDS affect their sexual behaviour; a quantitative approach of research design was used through a questionnaire A total of one hundred and thirty questionnaires were distributed and all were returned. There were few abstentions on some of the questions possibly due to its private nature but generally the overall responses were devoid of inconsistencies and the response rate was well over 98%. The findings from the study showed that greater that 90% of the respondents are quite knowledgeable with the cause of HIV, modes of transmission and prevention of HIV. While the respondents exhibit a high knowledge with respect to modes of transmission through sexual intercourse(96.8%); their knowledge with respect to safer sex practices with use of condom in penetrative sex calls for further review. It would be expected that 100% of all respondent will be fully abreast with information on the modes of transmission of HIV and its prevention. Condom use in stable relationship connotes different meanings to the respondents. While 109(85.2%) of the 128 respondents agreed to the use of condom among couples when the status of one of their partner is unknown. The response to the question on whether the use of condom affects sexual relationship portrays an interesting finding. 71(55.4%) of the total respondents disagreed with the fact that condom use affect sexual relationship while 42(32.8%) respondents agreed. It may not be out of place to assume that a lot of HCWs may not be condomizing effectively based on the impression that condom use during sex affect sexual relationship. Health care workers live and interact freely with other members of the society and are potential bridging group for disseminating HIV into the larger population. The finding from GH Ogoja portrays the fact that though the knowledge of HIV among them is very high their full application of the knowledge with respect to sexual behavioural change is still doubtful. A more qualitative study like focus group discussion will assist in unraveling this observation.

The chapter describes and critically evaluates predictors of MM in adolescents. The review combines psychological and criminological theories, aiming to better understand the phenomenon. The methodology includes (1) literature review of scientific papers and (2) software-based text-analysis on crime-news. This integration will provide a critical view of adolescents who commit MM from both scientific and media content. Through a detailed description of MM's risk factors among adolescents, this chapter aims at increasing parents', school leaders', school counselors', social workers', teachers', and health professionals' knowledge on the phenomenon. In this way, families and institutions may be able to build prompt, preventative, and tailored strategies to counteract MM.

Emergency medicine is a rapidly developing medical specialty which focuses on the diagnostic process, initial stabilization, and the treatment of patients suffering from acute illnesses or injuries. Emergency care can be provided in prehospital settings by emergency medical services, as well as in emergency departments. The primary providers of emergency care are: emergency medicine physicians, emergency nurses, and paramedics. Emergency medical personnel are required to be prepared to take decisive action at any time of day or night. It is essential for them to possess basic knowledge relating to psychology and an ability to utilize interpersonal communication skills. A critical role of medical workers in emergency settings is to provide a patient with emotional support coupled with medical assistance. Interpersonal communication skills depend on the personal abilities of an individual, however, these skills can be also enhanced through training and work experience.

The paradigm shift in work dynamics in the digital age leads the evolution of how and where people work. Knowledge workers adopt more flexible working styles: they connect to their laptops and work anywhere. The main disadvantage of this way of working is social isolation. Creative industries often require interdisciplinary interaction and collaboration. Coworking spaces have emerged in order to remove this isolation and create a third place apart from home and office. These spaces have been studied by disciplines such as economics, work psychology, and geography but studies on their spatial characteristics are limited. The aim of the chapter is to propose a conceptual framework to identify design implications for the coworking spaces in terms of spatial preferences of users. Accordingly, literature related to changing work dynamics and workplaces, rise of coworking spaces, and coworking space typology are discussed. The conclusion of the chapter is to propose design implications, which will inform designers, researchers, and managers on best practice for coworking space design.

In this talk for psychology and social work students, Winnicott describes why it is no wonder that it is so difficult to learn about psychology. At first students learn about psychology the same way they learn about other things, that is, with no contribution from oneself. In the second stage they ask, ‘Yes, but how do we know this is true?’ While most types of teaching take the student out of themselves, psychology that matters tends to throw the student back into themselves. We are all human beings ourselves, and if we learn about others we learn about ourselves. Winnicott describes the problem of learning about dynamic psychology based on knowledge, rather than dealing with children, or indeed with people at all.

In this memorandum, Winnicott questions whether paediatricians realise the extent and importance of newly emerging psychological knowledge as it affects childhood diseases. This leads to a suggestion that research grants should be offered to paediatricians to explore the psychological knowledge and existing organisations in the field of child-medical psychology. He stresses the importance of disorders of emotional development in childhood.

The author worked in the research and design department at a large Toyota company in the late 1990s and experienced an innovative process where engineers worked in tightly knit groups where monitoring, the informal hierarchy and dependence resulted from an emphasis on collective work. In the approach to innovation during the design process, the Toyota engineers were found to engage in an inductive process that placed an emphasis on the concrete and an orientation toward the field as a result of an approach that relied on experience based knowledge. The use of tacit and explicit knowledge is discussed within the context of the design process and the author finds that explicit knowledge dominates the improvement of productivity and organizational learning. The latest research in the sociology of culture and cultural psychology is used to highlight the cognitive approach to problem solving during the innovative process.

This chapter asks, How can we respond to complex social events before we are aware of what we think? It answers that question by reviewing research studies that show that humans can make use of what they have stored in memory without being aware of that knowledge. Evidence gathered from behavioral economics, social psychology, developmental psychology, discourse analysis, brain research, physiology, linguistics, and clinical psychology points to a view of how we think that should change our understanding of how we communicate. Social intuition theory captures that view and entails our rethinking how human communication works.

"In organizational psychology, the authors’ awareness of the concerns about the current academic working conditions and their potential impacts on PhD students’ mental health is increasing. Accordingly, authors have witnessed increased the attention to PhD students’ perception of their fit with the environmental conditions, i.e., organizational policies, co-workers’ and supervisors’ relations and supports, as an antecedent of their PhD experience. In particular, such environmental conditions seem to be related to the high diffusion of state anxiety and depression among PhD students that perceive a certain level of misfit between them and the environment. However, studies suggested that, despite the working conditions, in the presence of positive experience at work, such as meaningful work, individuals are less at risk of developing mental disorders as well as of quitting their job. Indeed, meaningful work construct regards a positive individual phenomenon of experience and perception of meaningfulness at work. Then, it might be a potential experience that might mitigate the experience of negative states at work. The present paper aims to address the current need for knowledge by involving a literature review of the role played by meaningful work in the PhD experience. Then, the paper explores the potential mediational role of meaningful work between the path from P-E misfit and mental disorders’ symptoms and students’ intention to quit. A cross-sectional study has been devised via the use of an online questionnaire with self-report measures on P-E misfit, meaningful work, mental health disorders symptoms, and intention to quit. In a sample of N = 251 Italian PhD students, the results showed a prevalence of three mental health disorders symptoms, i.e., depression, anxiety and hostility, among doctorate students, which resulted to be positively related to the levels of P-E misfit. Then, the results showed a negative mediating role of meaningful work on the paths from P-E misfit to (a) mental disorders and (b) intention to quit. Finally, the paper advances further steps for research as well as for practical implications for supporting PhD students."

Topicality of the study is related to the in-depth study of the art of works of Van Gogh, Velázquez and Repin by relating art to the biography of these authors. The aim of the study is to explore the symbolism and the biography of the painters using the examples of analysis from the works of Van Gogh, Velasquez, and Repin and also to determine the conditions that contribute to the awareness of the process of perception and understanding of paintings. The methodology of this study is figuratively symbolic method used with the purpose to compare the plots of the art and to relate them to the life experience of their creators. Results obtained and the most important conclusions: This is important for the author of a painting to convey his/her thoughts and feelings to the viewer. Still, there remains a problem. The author uses the language of the image and symbol, which the viewer needs to reveal. Psychology of art offers two main options for solving this problem. The essence of the first option which is the ability of the painter to direct the viewer's sight. It is called the Dutch approach. The second approach to the analyses of art is called the Italian approach. In this case this is important to understand the symbolism and knowledge gained historically by relating one’s art works to the biography of the painter. The authors of this article focus on the second approach by illustrating it with examples of analysis from the works of Van Gogh, Velázquez, and Repin. The results of this study might be of interest for those who are interested in arts and psychology.

First of all a survey of the most relevant definitions and hypotheses concerning data, information, communication and knowledge is proposed. Main aim of this introduction is to give to the reader a reference frame for the analysis of the students’ learning and for their knowledge construction works. Soon after some wrong ideas are analyzed with respect to the above conceptual frame, i.e. with respect to didactic communication, to human knowledge construction and to individual cleverness in the use of the concepts pertaining to specific disciplinary fields. At last some considerations on the above results are reported and some hints and suggestions for a revision of the Informing Science definition are proposed; all is done in a perspective that assigns to Informing Science a trans-disciplinary function that helps well-established disciplines like Didactics, Psychology, Philosophy etc. to find new strategies for the analysis of the teaching-learning process.
