The perceived auditory environment is an increasingly important part of people's everyday interactive experiences. While sound design is an established discipline in media such as video games and cinema, this is not the case in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). HCI designers are rarely trained in sound design, and may not make the most effective use of sound in the design of interactions. Even when sound is at the centre of a design it is rarely evaluated to compare the experiences of designers and listeners. This dissertation reports work conducted to develop a way of comparing sound designers' intentions for a sound design with the experiences of listeners. Literature on methods of measuring, classifying and visualising sound was reviewed, as well as approaches to sound design in different forms of media and computing. A published method for representing auditory environments was selected for preliminary studies. The four studies addressed to the difficulties of describing auditory environments and how they might be visualised. Two surveys were conducted in order to identify attributes of sound that would be meaningful to 75 audio professionals and 40 listeners. A way of classifying and visualising sound events and their distribution in physical environments was developed and evaluated. The soundscape mapping tool (SMT) was trialled with sound designs from a range of fields within media and computing. The experiences of both the designer and listeners were captured for each of the designs using the SMT. This work demonstrated that the SMT was suitable for capturing the intentions of 10 sound designers and the experiences of 100 listeners. The trial also provided information about how the SMT could be developed further. The dissertation contributes evidence that auditory environments can be abstracted and visualised in a manner that allows designers to represent their designs, and listeners to record their experiences.

Bitter Soil: Mapping Generational Female Experiences Through Poetry is a collection of creative writing made up of a methodological essay and forty-three poems. This collection, produced during my time in California State University, Long Beach’s M.F.A. in Creative Writing program, explores both familial bonds and personal growth. The essay portion of this thesis uproots my family tree for closer inspection as I explain my subject matter, influences, and process, as well as the benefits and challenges of being a woman writer. The forty-three poems within my manuscript specifically focus on my grandmother, my mother, and myself, zeroing in on our experiences as women across three very different generations. These poems are broken into two parts: the first half is about the lives of my grandmother and my mother, and the second half is mostly about my own life, as well as the lives of several other women that have moved me. Essentially, the purpose of my thesis work is to communicate female stories, relationships, and power, using my own relatives as proof in a creative effort to honor the women that I know and inspire those that I do not.

In line with public health discourses, current literature indicates that walking can improve mental wellbeing. Much of this research draws on bio-cognitive models to suggest that walking, especially in natural environments, reduces distress. The individualist focus in these studies means that service-users’ holistic experiences of environments and walking are overlooked. There is also little qualitative research that considers service-users’ subjective meaning-making processes. Alternatively, this qualitative study explores service-users’ perspectives of an urban-based ‘Walk and Talk’ (WnT) group and how being part of it has intersected with their experiences of other contexts. An ecological ontology that drew on the work of Tim Ingold (2011; 2015) and Kurt Lewin (1936/2015) and critical realist epistemology underpinned the study. Multi-modal methods were employed. Participants took photographs that formed the basis of a semi-structured interview and also participated in individual walk-along interviews. Transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis. This framework aimed to increase nuanced understandings of participants’ ongoing experiences of their environments and walking. An analysis of the data identified several, interconnected themes that are situated within two overarching sections: ‘Everyday Landscapes’ and ‘Wider Worlds’. It is argued that participants inhabited complex environments which contained malleable micro-spaces and oppressive boundaries shaped by macro forces. Furthermore, WnT is argued to be a relational space that fluidly accommodated participants’ subjectivities and helped expand their personal territories. The findings suggest that urban walking groups, which are not time-limited and focus on shared interests, can form a therapeutic space for service-users. Moreover, the findings highlight the need for clinical psychologists to develop clinical and theoretical frameworks that engage more fully and dynamically with service-users’ experiences of environments. It is also recommended that further research should highlight the complex and multifarious ways that structural inequalities enfold the fluid contexts’ that service-users negotiate.

This dissertation advances previous research on the journalistic interpretive community by placing news at the center of a community's construction of place. By focusing on the construction of Iowa City, Iowa's "Southeast Side" - neighborhoods home to predominantly newly arrived black residents from Chicago and other urban areas - this study identifies dominant news characterizations of the Southeast Side that mark the place as a "ghetto" or "inner city." Beyond providing information about community issues and social conditions from southeastern neighborhoods, the term Southeast Side performed a singular ideological purpose: to identify and maintain dominant community values throughout the rest of Iowa City. Racialized and stereotyped news narratives of urban people, places, and problems in a place called the Southeast Side created an ideological boundary between those in and outside the Southeast Side. Such a boundary subjugated the Southeast Side's cultural diversity and its people, presenting them as being counter to Midwestern values and a threat to notions of a safe, white and historically homogeneous community. Indeed, the creation of Southeast Side was just as much about creating an "inner city" as it was about constructing notions of Iowa City itself. Through mental mapping, this project then compares dominant news characterizations to those made by Southeast Side residents, journalists, and public officials. In the end, this study explores cultural meanings that emerged from examining the similarities or differences between the place-making of residents, journalists, and news sources. This study reveals place-making as a fundamental role of the journalistic community and identifies another ideological function of the press in that they assign power and meanings by describing news by where it happens. Journalists and media scholars have long talked about the press as improving community journalism to meet the notion of the public sphere. Yet, this dissertation is not another such study that only encourages journalists to alter how they report on local news and communities. Instead, this study suggests that journalists and scholars recognize the cultural power of journalistic place-making and the challenge to their authority to do so by residents from a particular place.

This study investigates a process of technological innovation in the classroom, and a range of related issues. It discusses the development of a technology-assisted tool, ThinkSpace, combining computer-based concept mapping and a wiki, aimed at facilitating collaborative and critical engagement with complex study material. The study adopts a design-based research approach in order to develop in tandem the technological implementation of the tool as well as the pedagogical practices for the use of the tool in the classroom. ThinkSpace was introduced into two schools where it was used by A-level history students. In close collaboration with the teachers practical uses for the tool were developed and implemented in the classroom. Data were collected through classroom observation, student and teacher interviews, as well as gathering evidence of students’ work with the tool. The thesis engages with questions of developing pedagogical practice to incorporate technological tools. It provides insights into the processes of working with teachers and students on collaborative innovation projects and the ways in which technology and pedagogy can gradually be aligned to achieve shifts in classroom practice. The project also investigates opportunities for developing productive uses of wikis and concept mapping in the classroom. The results of this study highlight the gradual and incremental nature of innovation in the classroom. The study concludes that innovation with tools such as ThinkSpace requires changes to deeply-seated learning practices, which are closely linked to student identity. If such practices are to be altered, it is necessary to think more carefully about supporting students through the pedagogical changes that some technological innovations endeavour to put into place. Possible ways of providing support in the processes of innovation were found in the present study through the scrutiny of the ways some students were beginning to appropriate the ThinkSpace tool. This suggested more targeted ways of encouraging conceptualisation and collaboration practices, which were the target of the innovation presented here.

This portfolio contains seven works for a variety of ensembles and explores a number of distinct approaches of mapping textile patterns into musical parameters, incorporating various compositional techniques, such as microtonality, minimalism, serialism, and stochastic composition. The commentary examines the aesthetic links between the compositions through the exploration of the interaction of visuals and sonic art, analysing in detail the analogous features between them. It is not the intention of this commentary to inform the reader how to compose music that is derived from textile patterns. Instead, this commentary is to be viewed as a personal creative method, describing the concepts and techniques employed in the music. The commentary is divided into two parts. The first part aims to outline the general methods involved in the construction of textile patterns, focusing on possible relations with various musical parameters. The second part presents these ideas as realised in the practical setting of my compositional work, drawing on the diverse strands of my artistic practice.

The purpose of the studyfocuses onhow teachersatan uppersecondary school, studentsin the autismspectrum, describetheir experiencesof working withmappingtools, Nylander(2012).Inmy research questionsIstarted fromthe teachers’ descriptions of their experiences of mapping procedures, if the outcome ofthe mapping hasinfluenced theteachers'educational work and ifmappingcould contribute tothe visibilityandclarification of the student´s functioning in aschool context. As the study is based on five interviews in which teachers reflect on their experiences from the tool of mapping, the socio-cultural perspective where learning takes place through interaction with the environment became a framework to build from. The method has been interviews based on a qualitative research interview. By using interviews, I was able to capture the diversity of the interviewees’ experiences described from the basis of an interview guide. This process also allowed room for flexibility where the interviewees were given the opportunity to elaborate on their views and ideas. This flexibility added valuable aspects of the teachers' experiences of mapping.   In the analysis ofmy result, I found that mappingwas importantin situations wherethe student'scontextneeded tobe made visible. The teachersexplained that themappingtoolwasan aidin understandinglearning andmoodas well asin detecting recurringpatterns in learning and mood. Based onthis information, teachersoccasionallyandin limitedcontextshave been able toadjust their teaching. Italso emerged that thetool of mappinghad notchanged theteachers'way of educating, butrather been used as a complementtothe learning situation.

Only a small part of the research concerns knowledge sharing to meet skills supply challenges based on a changing demographic, because of an aging population. Thus, this qualitative study has aimed to contribute with knowledge about how an organization, through knowledge sharing, can seize older employees’ knowledge. To answer the purpose of this study, seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with employees within state owned organization. The title of this study highlights challenges for older employees to share knowledge and abilities acquired through previous experiences. With influence of empirical phenomenology, an abductive approach, thematic analysis and inspiration from Ipe’s (2003) presuppositions for knowledge sharing, another presupposition for older employees to share knowledge was made visible, mapping of experiences. By mapping experiences, older employees’ knowledge can be made visible, which can contribute to the experience that their knowledge is being seized within the organization.

This thesis maps the growth of the use of internet technologies in randomised controlled trials in health care and public health, and explores the methodological and ethical issues that arise from their use from the perspective of researchers and participants. Online clinical trials are growing in number, and claim to offer benefits for researchers and participants, providing solutions to some of the inherent problems associated with traditional trials. However, little is known about how many internet-based trials have been conducted, what methodological research has been undertaken, or what impact the new technologies might have on researcher or participant experience. The thesis followed a step-by-step approach, using information science, research synthesis, and qualitative methods. The creation of a database of internet-based clinical trials established that they have grown rapidly in number, use internet technologies primarily to deliver an intervention, predominantly in behavioural, mental health, or life-style public health settings. A two-stage systematic review, comprising a descriptive map and a qualitative synthesis, established what is known about the methods, conduct or participant experience in internet-based trials. A qualitative primary study was then carried out, based on the findings of the review, to further explore the views, attitudes and experiences of researchers, participants and the public, into the motivations, benefits or barriers to taking part in internet-based clinical trials. Themes emerging from the research suggest complex interactions between design and technology, particularly in the area of participant characteristics and choice; convenience versus intrusion; impact of time and place; the pace of change and impact of societal changes in the use of technology. A range of ethical considerations emerged, including the nature of informed consent, ethical approval, and the need for a systematic approach to patient and public involvement. Recommendations are made to help inform and improve research practice in the digital age.

The qualitative approach used in this study captured and described ethical conflict experienced by a sample of practicing educational leaders. Narrative inquiry data were collected from 42 former and current doctoral students and additional data were captured through follow-up interviews with selected participants. The major findings of the study suggest that ethical conflict is inherent in the practice of educational leadership. Such conflict is most often experienced in relation to colleagues when the ethics of justice and care collide. Leaders’ ability to mitigate conflict that is often the result of institutional and external factors is promoted by varied background and contextual experiences. Educational leaders also felt that ethics and ethical competence is essential to the role of educational leader and that pre- and in-service preparation is important.

‘Just Urbanism’ refers to approaches that attempt to tackle social injustice and to address the difficulties of living in unjust spaces of contemporary cities affected by uneven development. This thesis argues that just urbanism cannot be achieved without taking into account inhabitants’ sociocultural aspects and their experiences of (in)justice. Therefore, it offers mapping as a method to explore qualities and themes that influence such experiences and to incorporate them in the just development of neighbourhoods and cities. Gaps in current approaches towards achieving a (more) just city occur as a result of a predominant focus on distributive aspects (quantitative approach) rather than on social aspects, values, qualities and recognition of differences. This research particularly concentrates on the gap in the mapping of injustice and on the digital tools used for this purpose, which often disregard socio-cultural condition of inhabitants. Moreover, there is a disconnect between abstract theories of justice and the everyday situated judgments and design decision that planners, designers and architects have to make. These gaps can be addressed by concentrating on the relationship between the individual and the collective, their position in society and their everyday experiences of (in)justice in the city. The mapping method used in this research is conceptualised as a platform to bring socio-cultural aspects into the digital mapping of injustice and represents particular qualities and conditions that influence inhabitants’’ experiences of (in)justice. Therefore, mapping here is both the subject of the research as well as the research method. To situate the research within a city context, a case study approach (with Sheffield as the case study) and a multi-method approach were adopted. The latter was conducted through three phases of mapping, including Storytelling Map, Map Art, and Mapping Multiplicity, comprising the residents’ perspectives from the individual, one-on-one exchange through to the collective collection of data on the city neighbourhood level. This overall mapping methodology and, in particular, the Mapping Multiplicity platform were put forward as a multi-method mapping approach, one that is more situated in the local context, and, by incorporating local knowledge and recognising individuals, their communities and the diversity of their background, it acknowledges different ways (in)justice is experienced. By doing so, it enables the identification of the particular needs of various communities, whilst providing the spatial context in which they take place. In this way, the proposed mapping method can complement current approaches in order to create a (more) complete picture of (in)justices in the city. Therefore it enables designers, planners and decision makers to make informed decisions that are backed up by thorough research. It also provides citizens with means to create a vision for a just city while being continuously engaged in the process of challenging the status quo and creating and consequently moving toward achieving a more just city. This thesis builds on the work and theories of a number of scholars. To define justice, poststructuralist and Marxist thinkers such as Iris Marion Young, Nancy Fraser and David Harvey provided the framework. From their viewpoint, the contemporary challenges for justice are manifestations of both vi uneven distribution and the misrecognition of social groups, ethnicities, gender inequalities, etc. In moving toward a just city, Susan Fainstein’s theory which stresses the importance of three areas – equity, diversity and democracy and Henry Lefebvre’s ‘right to the city’ which entails three rights for inhabitants: the right to appropriation, the right to participation and the right to difference, can represent the way this thesis responds to the question of justice and just city. In relation to the mapping methods, Denis Wood and Brian Holmes’ discourse of “counter-Mapping”, a critical method in which mapping is employed to ‘dissent’ and resist the power of the state, and taking the perspective of the marginalised, has influenced the overall methods of mapping (in)justice in this thesis. Storytelling and Map Art were inspired by performances such as Jake Barton’s ‘City of Memory’, while Mapping Multiplicity is in dialogue with the notion of Rhizome conceptualized by Deleuze and Guattari and practices such as Fernard Deligny’s tracings of autistic children, Doina Petrescu’s relational maps of communities, groups, devices, and places, as well as Mark Lombardi’s Narrative Structures and Bureau d’Etudes’ power lines, all of which demonstrate the use of line and relationality in exposing the complex relations among physical, political, economic and social forces.

In game based learning, motivating the players to learn by providing them a desirable gameplay experience is extremely important. However, it's not an easy task considering the quality of today's commercial non-educational games. Throughout the gameplay, the player should neither get overwhelmed nor under-challenged. The best way to do so is to monitor the player's actions in the game because these actions can tell the reason behind the player's performance. They can also tell about the player's lacking competencies or knowledge. Based on this information, in-game educational interventions in the form of hints can be provided to the player. The success of such games depends on their interactivity, motivational outlook and thus player retention. UNTANGLED is an online mapping game based on crowd-sourcing, developed by Reconfigurable Computing Lab, UNT for the mapping problem of CGRAs. It is also an educational game for teaching the concepts of reconfigurable computing. This thesis performs qualitative comparative analysis on gameplays of low performing players of UNTANGLED. And the implications of this analysis are used to provide recommendations for improving the gameplay experience for these players by guiding them. The recommendations include strategies to reach a high score and a compact solution, hints in the form of preset patterns and a clustering based approach.

Web browsing posses a major share among the activities on the Internet. Heavy usage of web browsing makes the Web Quality of Experience (QoE) one of the critical factor in deciding the overall success of network services. Amongst others, Web QoE can be effected by the delays in network that can result in higher application download times. In this thesis work, an effort has been made to map applications level download times to Quality of Experience. A subjective analysis on how the user takes into account the domain of web browsing has been carried out. For this purpose a testbed was developed at Blekinge Institute of Technology on which different users were tested. Specific sequences of delays were introduced on the network which resulted in desired application download times. Regression analysis was performed and a mapping between user QoE and application download times was carried out. Based on the results conclusions were made which are presented in this thesis report.

Founded in 1903, St. Stephen’s College is a secondary school with a history of more than one century. The school was relocated to Stanley, Hong Kong Island in the 1920s, and since then, it has witnessed the development of Hong Kong in every aspect, from the social improvement to the architectural development. During the Japanese occupation in the Second World War, it was even turned into the internment camp for the Hong Kong citizens by the Japanese. Most of the oldest buildings, which were built in 1930s, are still in use today. Besides, the school also has a number of different types of plants, which are worth to appreciate for plant lovers. Recently, the school office has decided to open the school to the public for their better understanding of the history of the school as well as Hong Kong. This dissertation will focus on two of the most important features of St. Stephen’s College: the natural potential and the architectural potential, for designing several different routes for the visitors with different interests. By analyzing and evaluating the two features, visitors can have a better knowledge about the school as well as enrich their experience while visiting the school.

Home…that space so personal, so distinct, so intrinsic to the human/place relationship that “lies right at the heart of human geography” (Cresswell, 2004, p. 93). Studying the connection people feel toward certain places through concepts of emotion, experience, and attachment to meaning stems outward from the phenomenological and humanist branches of geography (Holt-Jensen, 2009). With every person’s version of home a space unto itself, is it possible for a place so intimate to be studied and defined? My answer is yes. This phenomenological case study investigates the perceptions and emotions of a newly designated conservation neighborhood, the second of its kind in Reno, Nevada. In an area usually looked at as a site for economic development and perhaps initiatives in historic preservation, there is little research undertaken through a cultural geographic lens aiming to understand how different communities in the area view their own home ground in transition and the implications of place creation. This project navigates the allegory of home through the voices and drawn maps of the Wells Avenue Neighborhood Conservation District (WANCD) and is approached through the impressions and attitudes of community groups, merchants, and a patchwork of residents diverse in both their backgrounds and their stories about the place they live. Through the construction of sense of place inside and around the WANCD and with the usage of Geographic Information Systems as a tool for qualitative data collection and comunication, this study investigates how personal experiences and perceptions, community connections and common goals, and specifically-identified areas of personal meaning play into the way in which these different stakeholders experience, participate in, and envision their neighborhood.

Dominican mass-migration to the United States only started in the 1960s but Dominican Americans are now a sizable minority and in 2014 they became the largest Latino group in New York City. This thesis examines fictional works by Dominican American writers who migrated to the United States from the early 1960s to the 1990s which explore the predicament of Dominican Americans before and after the consolidation of Dominican-American communities. The novels under scrutiny here were published in English between 1991 and 2012 by Julia Alvarez (b. 1950), Loida Maritza Pérez (b. 1963), Junot Díaz (b. 1969), and Angie Cruz (b. 1972) and present us with characters whose search for a ‘home’ and for ways in which to articulate their individual and collective identity are shaped by continuous negotiations between the traditional values of their country of origin and the potentially transformative opportunities afforded by their new country. I will show how these texts powerfully challenge homogeneity, marginalisation, mainstream ideologies, nationalism, and discrimination while questioning the economic, social, religious, patriarchal, educational, and political structures of both the Dominican Republic and the United States in order to formulate diverse modalities of belonging to what Julia Alvarez has called a new “country that’s not on the map” and establish their own distinct position as Dominican American writers.

Every product or service is part of an ecosystem. The analysis of ecosystems enables organizations to understand the use and potential of a product or service. The information that flows through ecosystems is not always tangible. However, it can be categorized and accessed through different gateways. In this thesis, the authors present an overview of current service design tools and compare them to a cross-channel ecosystem’s approach. The ubiquitous nature of technology permits users to interact and perform activities uninterrupted within physical and digital space. Therefore, the inclusion of external stakeholders within an ecosystem enables a richer analysis of a product or service design. Two major factors that are taken into consideration: 1. Touchpoints within the ecosystem. 2. The information channels that can be accessed through touchpoints. This thesis involves an exploratory case study that aims at mapping cross-channel experiences and ecosystems thereafter in relation to a publishing firm located in New York. Along the conceptualization process, the authors faced difficulties understanding appropriate methods of labelling and choosing of elements that assist in the construction of an ecosystem. However, the initial drawing of the firm’s ecosystem clearly differs from the results attained from the interviews outcomes on the one hand. On the other hand, the final diagram of overlapped information channels placed over a fraction of the ecosystem, provides a tangible understanding towards the presence of touchpoints in one or more information channels. By displaying such cross-channel ecosystems, organizations can increase or re-structure their activities according to their strategy. The study gives a very concrete proposition of how the ecosystems can be mapped. Further studies and guidelines to increase an ecosystems parameters and precision of execution is still to be developed and researched.

The presented research elicits the behaviour, needs and desires, in addition to future needs, of tourists during the tourist experience through the use of trains in Belgium, with a focus on the future creation of a mobile application that supports not only the collection and use of information during the train trip, but also some factors related to the anticipation and on-site experience. Three different qualitative user research methodologies were planned and carried out: observations, focus group interviews and board games as generative tool. In addition, Personas and context scenarios were developed in order to start bridging the research-design gap. This study was developed during a mobility program between University of Aveiro and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. It is written in English, which represented a challenge to the researcher, who is Brazilian and has Portuguese as the mother tongue.

Today many people experience that their phones are taking them out of the present. This is the case at concerts too where some perceive them to be a distraction from the actual experience. This paper maps what the concert experience consists of from a qualitative perspective and then uses the same phones that people perceive to be distracting for making them more engaged in the event.

Stockholm is a city of bridges. But we rarely pay attention to what happens below them. Many of these spaces are centrally located in the city, yet perceived as peripheral due to their uncertain programmatic status and rough physical appearance, also referred to as loose space. Some are integrated in the urban fabric; others are more inaccessible and thus become forgotten spots detached from the rapid development of the rest of the city. The space below the bridges of Skanstull is an example of the latter. After many years of being in the shadow of the city, giving space for outdoor parties, graffiti painters and more recently urban farming, it is now being under pressure of a large scale redevelopment project. But do these spaces carry meaning that is neglected in the common notion of public space? How can we as planners use our tools in order to encourage the existence of a larger diversity of forms, spaces and uses?

In this thesis, I explore the ways the sensory experience of war is staged as a corporeal apprehension of space in the Hollywood war film. Placing an emphasis on films that foreground tactile, and sonic experience in combat as a key dimension of symbolic meaning in the depiction of war, I move beyond the emphasis on optics and weaponised vision that has largely dominated contemporary writing on war and cinema in order to highlight the wider sensory field that is powerfully evoked in this genre. In my conception of war cinema as representing a somatic experience of space, I am applying a term recently developed by Derek Gregory within the theoretical framework of Critical Geography. What he calls “corpography” implies a constant re-mapping of landscape through the soldier's body. Gregory's assumptions can be used as a connection between already established theories of cartographic film narration and ideas of (neo)phenomenological film experience, as they also imply the involvement of the spectator's body in sensuously grasping what is staged as a mediated experience of war. While cinematic codes of war have long been oriented almost exclusively to the visual, the notion of corpography can help to reframe the concept of film genre in terms of expressive movement patterns and genre memory, avoiding reverting to the usual taxonomies of generic texts. The thesis focuses on selected films exemplary of the aesthetic continuities and changes in American cinema's audio-visual representation of war (with each chapter centring on a specific military conflict and historical constellation): All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), Paths of Glory (1957), Objective, Burma! (1945), Fury (2014), Men in War (1957), The Boys in Company C (1978), Rescue Dawn (2006), and Zero Dark Thirty (2012).

Contemporary societies are facing rapid growth, urbanization and migration into the form of urban cities and environments. This requires the ever-expanding need for urban infrastructures to facilitate growing populations, communities and economies within cities. A vital elements within modern urban environments is the need for different forms of urban mobility in order to facilitate the movement and flow of people, goods and communication networks. Within the realm of urban mobility is the important aspect of public transport infrastructures as a system of creating more sustainable and equitable mobility for people within urban environments. Within cities of the global South, such as Cape Town, greater public transport systems are highly reliant on non-motorized transport (NMT) systems. This is due to issues of affordability, efficiency and spatial proximity of large portions of the population in relation to public transport facilities. Therefore, a substantial amount of urban mobility is facilitated by walking as a mode of transport. However, public transport within Cape Town are impacted by issues of personal safety. This is most visible in the Cape Town central business district (CBD). There is a lack of knowledge, design and planning around how people move within the city, and how NMT systems are used within the greater public transport domain. Issues of personal safety become the dominant focus for NMT and human-scale mobility within the city centre. This research examines these issues in more detail. In order to gain deeper knowledge around the experiences of NMT users within the CBD – a qualitative method of research was applied. The research used a gender-sensitive lens in order to gain an understanding as to how gender roles contribute to issues of personal safety and issues of mobility within the urban environment. The objective was to demonstrate the intersection of issues of personal safety within mobility and within space. The research is used as a foundation for creating a mobile phone App prototype. The design is based on user-generated data to create a tool that can help commuters find the safest human-scale mobility routes within the CBD. This tool demonstrates how ICT (information and communication technology) systems can be used to create safer mobility infrastructures and networks. The prototype relies on user-generated data that creates a platform for citizens to become planners in their everyday transport navigations. Thus the research also explores how technology and user-generated data can inform planning and urban management. This resulted in a tool that enables a cyclical system that blends the knowledge of the user and planner in the co-productive design of space and mobility infrastructures.

With increasing migration over the last few decades, over 20% of Sweden’s inhabitant are now foreign-born (Krzyżanowski, 2018). A policy shift stemming from the 2015 European migrant crisis (Hagelund, 2020) led to a decentring of integration management from national immigration policy to the local level (Scholten and Penninx, 2016). Subsequently, community level actors have become increasingly active developing their own integration philosophies and implementing these locally. Health and well-being activities curated by the non-governmental organisation Hej Främling seek to improve local inclusion for migrants and newly arrived persons to Sweden. Using these activities as a launching point, this study draws upon perceptions from 17 migrants participating in Hej Främling to examine their feelings of inclusion and sense of belonging across space and place and activities. Results show activity participation both within Hej Främling and across Swedish society more broadly has a positive influence on migrants’ sense of inclusion, in particular through the facilitation of shared spaces of experience, where migrants from diverse backgrounds can come together over a shared interest and build upon their social networks. Concept-mapping was used as a conceptual framework to illuminate the core components of inclusion, how they interlink and contribute to further conceptualisation. This study identifies four key insights for local inclusion: 1) the value of shared experiences in creating inclusion 2) the perceived socio-cultural barriers to inclusion 3) activity space as environments for intercultural encounters and 4) the facilitative role of community organisations in creating inclusion and promoting integration.

How do we humans feel the light? Is there a correspondance between our inner feelings and emotions and the outer space that surrounds us? Are we aware/conscious of it? Which personal meanings-values and emotions arise in us and how we consequently link them to a certain light-environment Atmosphere (indoor and outdoor) lit by natural or artificial light? Driven by these questions, this thesis will investigate via a visual qualitative experiment driven among photography amateurs, how their emotional sensibility is deeply bonded with light and how this emotional atmosphere is felt and portrayed throughout the day. A collection of two pictures per day, for one week, in the morning and in the evening will be firstly analyzed under the lens of each singular participant’s emotional sensibility, and then collectively grouped into common lighting Atmospheres. The wide and colorful spectrum of the possible combinations between light and emotions investigated in this research shows the richness and the complexity of the human sensibility towards light, and raise awareness in consider these intangible human factors as essential in the lighting process.

The last decades have witnessed the resurgence of research on linguistic relativity, which provides empirical evidence of possible language effects on thought across various perceptual domains. This study investigated the linguistic relativity hypothesis in the abstract domain of time by looking at how L1 Chinese - L2 English bilinguals conceptualize time in two-dimensional space. English primarily relies on horizontal spatial items to talk about time (e.g., back to youth); in addition to horizontal spatial metaphors (e.g., ‘front year’), Chinese speakers also commonly use vertical metaphors to describe time (e.g., ‘up week’). If language has an effect on thought, then spatial-temporal metaphors should shape people’s temporal cognition. In this study, we examined whether spatial-temporal metaphors impact online processing of time and long-term habitual thinking about time. Experiment 1 showed that bilinguals could automatically access the timeline which corresponded to the immediate linguistic context. In Experiment 2, a majority of bilinguals demonstrated salient vertical bias for temporal reasoning, whereas a small number of participants relied on the horizontal axis to represent time. The dominant thinking patterns for time documented here (65% prefer a vertical representation of time; 35% horizontal) run counter to the fact that horizontal metaphors are twice as common in Chinese as vertical metaphors. Further, it was found that bilinguals who used English more frequently were more likely to have a less vertical bias, which suggested a role of L2 experience in conceptual representations. Taken together, the evidence in this study showed that spatial-temporal metaphors have both short-term and long-term effects on mental representations of time, but also that space-time mappings do not depend solely on linguistic factors.

Digitalization is a topic that affects most of the industries as well as the society overalltoday. Within this topic, the use of mobile technology devices, such as smartphones, allows organizations to perform tasks in an anytime-anywhere situation – usually calledenterprise mobility. The Swedish Police Authority see the potential of this technologyshift that is happening and are currently focusing on developing tools to support thedaily operations. The debriefing process for the intervention police is an area wheredigitalization and mobility could improve the efficiency. However, it is today unknownwhat technical solution could support the operations, what features it should include, and how it should look. The purpose of this study was to investigate how mobility can support the debriefingprocess in forms of efficiency for the polices in field from an exploratory point of view.An inductive research approach was chosen together with a case study researchmethod. Semi-structured and unstructured interviews were held with 35 participantsfrom different parts of the organization to get both a breadth and depth of knowledge. The delimitation was made to study the Swedish Police Authority and more in detail theintervention police. The current debriefing process was observed and mapped in thefirst part of this study, followed by part two which included a technical specification andprototyping of a mobile debriefing tool based on interviews and observations. Thefindings from part one and part two resulted in a proposed specification of a mobiledebriefing tool for what it should include and how it should look. The study shows that the proposition of a debriefing tool can increase the efficiency forthe Swedish Police Authority by reducing the duplication of work, increase the usabilityfor the users, reduce the risk for human errors, and reduce the dependency ofstationary workplaces for debriefing. The debriefing tool includes quality assurance ofthe information gathered through a structured working process at the same time. Thefactors mentioned above can also be linked to reduced time spent on the tasks whileretain or even increase the quality of the results – which in this case is the debriefingreport.

Engaging in the music set of one’s favorite artist or DJ is oftentimes leading to the result of a powerful and euphoric felt experience, a sensation partly also induced from dancing in beat to the music. In an attempt to simulate a similar dance experience, a user-study was designed in order to investigate when a user is let to dance in rhythm to a music playback and in addition, in control of a music playback tempo through the induced dance movements. A proof-of-concept prototype was built and tested in an initial study, followed by a main study where the prototype had been modified and 12 participants participated. A questionnaire was given containing various question statements to be rated through a Likert-scale regarding their subjective experience. Open-ended questions were also included to collect their own opinions. From the results, an enhanced engagement and enjoyment of the music could be identified when being able to manipulate the tempo.

The reverb effect in the world of music production is frequently used and universally regarded as an essential tool. On the other hand in the domain of speech recordings -primarily radio and podcasts- is the use of reverberation more limited if even used at all. How the listener percieves a recording is affected by the reverberation of said recording. More precisely, a long reververation can be percieved as belonging to a large room, while a more damped sound with shorter reverberation sounds like a small room. A news broadcast sounding similar to church acoustics or a recording in the style of a podcast -with no room response- can be difficult to listen to, especially for a listener with isolating headphones. Many research articles and studies have been published about the concept of personally preferred reverberation for music, but very few for speech. Therefore this study was conducted with an intent to find a consensus between independent participants. What reverberation time is preferred when listening to a news report? Each participant in the study listened to a set of seven versions of a single voice recording in the style of a news report. The variants had reverberation times spanning from 0 ms up to 800. They then graded the recordings on a scale from 1 through 100 corresponding to how close to an ideal listening experience they had, according to their personal preference. The data extracted from the study points to a preference towards less reverberation time. The difference between smaller reverberation times were shown to be more significant compared to the difference between the same interval at a longer reverberation time. The expected preference-peak at between 200 and 400 ms was not found but the absence of it could be explained by several factors, such as: disparity between the quality of the soundclip and the quality of the reverb effect used, the extent of the study of the lack of a training session for the participants before the start of the study.

Building on Fredric Jameson's critical theory, this dissertation examines how the aesthetics of cognitive mapping were used to uncover overlooked political, economic, social and cultural dimensions behind my artistic engagement with Islamic patterns. Using a critically informed variant of arts-based research (ABR), I explored the complexity of the interconnected economic, social, political and aesthetic realities informing my positionality as a Muslim Saudi female artist/research completing her dissertation in a Western country. Particularly, my work revealed how certain global forces (including capitalist relations between Saudi Arabia and the USA, as well as global postmodern cultural influences) shape the processes of appropriation and re-signification of patterning appropriated from Islamic aesthetics. This research culminated in a body of artwork for a solo exhibition at Paul Voertman's Gallery at the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas located in Denton, Texas. I conclude the study with recommendations for a regional ABR to be developed by educators for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The study also suggests that this model of cognitive mapping as a critical art making methodology would be a great pedagogical tool for museums and art education curriculum to implement in Saudi Arabia.
