Career choice is one of the most daunting decisions one has to make, since it has implications that affect a variety of aspects in one’s life. For adolescents, career decision–making is even more challenging because it is done at a time when adolescents are going through a period of identity formation, and when their core personalities have not yet been fully formed. It is therefore essential to provide systematic career guidance programmes that will assist adolescents in their career development in order to empower them to make realistic career choices. The school, as a place where adolescents spend most of their time, can be used as a vehicle to promote meaningful career development amongst adolescent learners. However, the contribution by adolescents themselves in determining the appropriate content and career guidance services/activities that will best address their needs is vital. Senior secondary school learners, in particular, are in a position to articulate their career planning needs and to identify the deficits in existing career guidance programmes. The situation in Botswana where career guidance forms only a quarter of the public secondary school guidance and counselling programme, which, with all its four components, is allocated only one 40 minute–period per week deserves special attention. Hence, this study set out to determine: * the career planning needs of Senior Public Secondary School Learners in Gaborone, Botswana as articulated by the learners themselves; * the extent to which the current career guidance programme in Senior Public Secondary Schools meets the needs of the learners. A mixed methods design, consisting of the use of a questionnaire to collect the quantitative data and a qualitative method in the form of focus–group interviews, was used to collect the data for the study. The findings of the study highlight several challenges which hamper the provision of a systematic career guidance programme to the learners, which include limited time, lack of trained personnel and less than optimal career service delivery practices. The lack of key career exploration activities in schools, such as the use of internet resource materials and career video/audio tapes, job–shadowing, career field–trips/excursions and, in some cases, career talks, results in learners experiencing unmet career needs. This situation affects the extent to which the curriculum in place addresses the career planning needs of the learners. No significant differences were noted in the needs of the learners according to gender. The study reveals that the Career Guidance Programme provides the relevant theoretical frame–work for providing the necessary assistance to learners to make informed career decisions. However, the actual implementation of the programme in the different schools leaves a lot to be desired, with several learning outcomes for the career guidance programme in both Form 4 and Form 5 not being achieved. The effectiveness of the annual career fair as a major method of disseminating career information to learners also came into question since most learners expressed having gained minimal benefit from it.

Syftet med uppsatsen är att skapa förståelse för varför singlar åker på singelresa. För att få en djupare förståelse för hur singlarna tänker om singelresor har vi använt oss av en kvalitativ metod. Vi har intervjuat sju singlar och en före detta singel mellan 40-60 år för att ta reda på deras innersta tankar om singelresor. Utöver detta har vi även intervjuat ett reseföretag för att få deras perspektiv på singeln. Den teoretiska referensramen grundar sig dels på tidigare forskning om singelsegmentet, dels på teorier om konsumentbeteende. Vi fann att singlarna i vår undersökning åker på singelresa för att träffa nya vänner och få gemenskap. Själva resmålet i sig har mindre betydelse. Flertalet av singlarna beskriver att de känner sig ensamma efter en skilsmässa eller bortgång, behovet av att knyta nya kontakter och kompensera för ensamheten är stort. Under resorna blir gemenskapen så stark att medresenärerna kan ersätta den traditionella familjestrukturen. Att åka på singelresa innebär också en viss trygghet. Alla är i samma sits, vilket upplevs som en stor fördel av respondenterna. De poängterar att det är en stor trygghet att alltid ha folk omkring sig. Singlarna vill att det ska vara många ordnade aktiviteter där alla kan delta och gemensamma måltider, ensamheten blir mindre påtaglig. Många av singlarna hoppas på att träffa en livskamrat och leva i tvåsamhet. De uppger dock inte att de åker på singelresa för att träffa någon. Vi kan tydligt skönja att singlarna har en viss förväntning om att träffa en partner på resan. Singelresan kan därför vara ett naturligt sätt att träffa en potentiell partner.

Idag finns en avsiktsplan för en etablering av ett IKEA-varuhus i Umeå och det råder en oro bland handlare samtidigt som en förväntan sprider sig bland umeåborna. Kommunen hade tidigare planer på att utveckla Klockarbäckens handelsområde men då möjligheten om ett IKEA dök upp ändrades avsikterna. Visionen är idag en nyetablering av ett nytt handelsområde vid stadens södra entré. Hur konsumenter handlar, deras kriterier, var och när de handlar är viktiga aspekter när det gäller konsumentbeteende, vilket är huvudämnet som kommer att behandlas i denna uppsats. Lojalitet är en annan viktig aspekt inom konsumentbeteendet, och det vi ville studera är hur lojala konsumenter är mot de butiker och handelsområden de handlar på idag och vad som händer med en konsuments lojalitet vid nyetableringar. Syftet med denna studie har varit att kartlägga konsumenters grad av lojalitet till befintliga handelsområden idag och hur denna skulle komma att förändras i och med en externetablering av ett fjärde handelsområde vad gäller ett IKEA-varuhus i Umeå. Vårt syfte kommer även vara att förklara skillnader mellan olika grupper samt redogöra för de effekter som en etablering kan medföra. Vi har genom en omfattande enkätundersökning identifierat hur konsumenter i Umeå uppskattar sin lojalitet idag och hur de tror att denna kan komma att förändras i och med en nyetablering av ett nytt handelsområde. Våra resultat visar att Umeås konsumenter i stor utsträckning idag är mycket lojala till sina valda handelsområden. Trots detta uttrycker majoriteten av alla respondenter att deras lojalitet kommer att förändras till förmån för det nya handelsområdet Entré Syd och IKEA. Vidare visar resultatet tydliga indikationer på att Strömpilen och Klockarbäcken är de handelsområden som kommer drabbas hårdast av nyetableringen.

Syftet med denna studie var att skapa förståelse kring hur processer kring teori U kan användas för att skapa förutsättningar för en lärande organisation, som präglas av högre effektivitet och kvalitet i dess processer. Undersökningen gjordes i form av en fallstudie på MEKA projektet i Strömsund kommun där projektets nätverksteam intervjuades. MEKA (Mångfald, Egenmakt, Kunskap, Arbete) syftar till att effektivisera och kvalitetssäkra introduktionsprocessen för nyanlända. Detta gjordes för att se på vilket sätt de workshopar som genomförts med nätverksteamet, inspirerade av teori U, hade bidragit till att skapa lärande organisationer. Resultaten visade att workshoparna framgångsrikt använt sig av teori U, vilket skapat mer organisatoriskt lärande hos nätverksteamet. Kundfokus, systemtänkande och viljan att hitta nya lösningar till problem var de mest framträdande resultaten från workshoparna. Detta innebär att organisationer med fördel kan använda sig av teori U workshopar, för att uppnå mer lärande organisationer som är bättre rustade för framtida utmaningar.  Studiens generaliserbarhet begränsas av att det är en fallstudie genomförd på endast ett fall. The object of this study was to create an understanding regarding how processes from theory U can be used to create better conditions for a learning organization, which is characterized by higher efficiency and quality within its processes. The study was conducted as a case study on the MEKA project in Strömsund municipality, where the network team within the project was interviewed. MEKA (an acronym for diversity, empowerment, knowledge, work) is a project developed to make the introduction process for newly arrived refugees more efficient and with higher quality. This was done to see in what way the workshops who had been held, which were influenced by theory U, had contributed to creating learning organizations. The results showed that the workshops had successfully used the theory U, which had led to more organizational learning within the network team. Customer focus, systems thinking and a willingness to find new solutions were the most significant results from the workshops. This means that organizations advantageously can use theory U, in order to achieve more learning organizations which are better equipped for the challenges that the future holds. This doctoral study investigates the practice of narrative strategies in the creation of animated poetry-film. The status of the animator as auteur of the poetry-film is established on the grounds of the multiple instances of additional authoring that the animated poetry-film requires. The study hypothesises that diverse narrative strategies are operative in the production of animated poetry-film. Two diametrically opposed strategies are identified as ideal for the treatment of lyrical narrative. The first narrative strategy explored is that of metamorphosis, demonstrating how the filmic material originates and grows organically via stream of consciousness and free association. The second narrative strategy entails a calculated approach of structuring visual imagery and meaning through editing from a pre-existing visual lexicon. In both cases, the interdependence is explored between embodied activity and conceptual activity, between tacit and explicit knowledge in the creative act. These two strategies are practically investigated through my creative praxis, specifically the production of two animated poetry-films, Mon Pays and Parys suite. Through these works, the strategies are tested for their effectivity in communicating visual content not contained in the poetry-text, yet adding value to the poetry/animated film hybrid. Animated poetry-film is theoretically contextualised in terms of intermediality and the specific multi-modal nature of the medium. The construction of animated poetry-film is explored through the research study consisting of a thesis and two animated poetry films, with the hope of contributing to research on animated poetry-film specifically, and to animation theory within the South African context.

Peat extraction for horticultural production poses a threat to wetland ecosystems. The rapid growth rate of the horticulture industry has prompted an ongoing search for sustainable alternative growth media components to replace peat. The alternative components need to provide properties (physical and chemical) similar to or better than peat and provide conditions that will enhance ideal growth and yield of potted plants. Potted Dendranthema x grandiflorum is one of the most important pot plants cultivated worldwide in the floriculture industry. There is a global research effort to replace peat with a sustainable alternative growth media for potted plants; however, so far, no study has been conducted in South Africa that used similar treatments on potted Dendranthema x grandiflorum. The aim of this study was to determine a suitable alternative growth media to replace peat as a growth media for cultivation of potted D. x grandiflorum. A greenhouse experiment was conducted at the University of South Africa’s Horticulture centre in Florida, Johannesburg for 89 days. Eight growth media (100 % peat (T1) (control), 100 % bagasse (T2), 50:50 % v/v bagasse:peat (T3), 75:25 % v/v bagasse:peat (T4), 25:75 % v/v bagasse:peat (T5), composted bagasse (T6), Coir (T7), and pine bark (T8)) as treatments and one hybrid (Mount® Runca) of D. x grandiflorum were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. In this study, nutrient uptake, chlorophyll content, growth, and yield parameters were measured for potted D. x grandiflorum grown in all eight growth media. The results show that treatments had different chemical and physical properties compared to peat. The pH of 100 % bagasse and coir were within the ideal range recommended for growth media. The EC results indicated that after the experiment, other treatments were within the defined range except for composted bagasse due to high concentration of soluble salts. The BD of control and composted bagasse were similar and may have resulted in the low root response. The concentration of total N was high in the shoots of plants cultivated in 100 % peat with a subsequent increased fresh and dry shoots weight. The highest significant chlorophyll content was present in plants cultivated in composted bagasse, which contained high total N and, Fe and Zn concentrations in shoots. Taken together, the results showed that composted bagasse was the best alternative to replace peat for cultivation of potted D. x grandiflorum.

Die doel van hierdie studie was om ʼn gepaste alternatiewe groeimedium te bepaal om turf as ʼn groeimedium te vervang vir die aanplanting van D. x grandiflorum-potplante. ʼn Kweekhuis-eksperiment is by die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika se Tuinbousentrum in Florida, Johannesburg uitgevoer vir 89 dae. Agt groeimedia (100% turf (T1) (beheer), 100% bagasse (T2), 50:50% v/v bagasse:turf (T3), 75:25% v/v bagasse:turf (T4), 25:75 % v/v bagasse:turf (T5), bagasse wat tot kompos verwerk is (T6), klapperhaar (T7), en dennebas (T8)) as behandelings en een hibried (Mount® Runca) van D. x grandiflorum is in ʼn verewekansigde, volledige blokontwerp met vier repliserings gerangskik. In hierdie studie is voedingstofopname-, chlorofilinhoud-, groei- en opbrengs-parameters gemeet vir potgroei van D. x grandiflorum in al agt groeimedia. Die resultate toon dat die behandelings verskillende chemiese en fisiese eienskappe in vergelyking met turf het. Die pH van 100% bagasse en klapperhaar val binne die ideale reikwydte wat vir groeimedia aanbeveel word. Volgens die EG (elektriese geleiding)-resultate was ander behandelings binne die gedefinieerde reikwydte – behalwe vir bagasse wat tot kompos verwerk is – vanweë die hoë konsentrasie oplosbare soute. Die BD van beheer en bagasse wat tot kompos verwerk is, was soortgelyk en kon die lae wortelrespons veroorsaak het. Die konsentrasie totale N was hoog in die lote van plante wat in 100% turf aangeplant is, met ʼn gevolglike verhoging in die gewig van vars en droë lote. Die hoogste beduidende chlorofilinhoud was teenwoordig in plante wat gekweek is in bagasse wat tot kompos verwerk is, en wat hoë totale konsentrasies van N, Fe en Zn in die lote bevat het. Alles in ag genome het die resultate getoon dat bagasse wat tot kompos verwerk is, die beste alternatief is om turf te vervang in die kweking van D. x grandiflorum in potte.

The South African Schools Act (Act o 84 of 1996) and PubIic Finance Management Act (Act No.1 of 1999) are the most important legislative frameworks in financial school management. Principals and other stakeholders still find it difficult to comply with these Acts and this makes it difficult for them to manage their school finances effectively and efficiently. The purpose of this study was to explore the extent of the effectiveness of the EMG's support and training programmes in addressing the challenges that principals are faced with in the management of school finances. In addition the study aimed at establishing the reasons why schools still find it difficult to manage their finances well and why they are not complying with the relevant Acts. The empirical study followed a qualitative (interpretive) research approach. The interpretive approach allowed the researcher to interact closely with the participants to gain insight and form a clear understanding as to how effective the EMG is towards addressing the challenges facing principals in the management of school finances. Firstly, twenty six (26) school principals who were purposefully selected from ninety six (96) schools in the Rekopantswe Area Office participated in the open - ended survey. Secondly, five (5) school principals from twenty six who participated in the first round of data collection and the EMG, participated in the interviews. Three school principals were males. two were females and the EMG coordinator was a female. Finally, six participants were interviewed, three males and three female .. Through this study, the researcher established that the Department of Education is not doing enough to address the challenges that principals are faced with in managing school finances. Finance training programmes are not relevant to the schools' needs. There is a need for a qualified full - time treasurer in all schools. The general view of stakeholders, particularly principals, is that the Rekopantswe Area Office is not playing an effective role in addressing the challenges racing principals in the management of school finances. Therefore, it is recommended that training workshops should be based primarily on the areas of concern discovered during the interrogation of school monthly reports and the audited finance statements. The blanket approach to conducting training workshops does not necessarily address challenges that principals are faced with. With the implementation of focused training workshops, school management and GB members will be equipped with the necessary competency needed to improve the situation at school and the economy of the country. The study further recommends collaborative work, teamwork and cooperation among schools. Schools should not work in isolation: they should share information amongst the committees for development purposes.

In this thesis, the researcher used an explanatory sequential mixed methods research design to investigate the role of English academic vocabulary on reading comprehension of grade 11 English First Additional Language (EFAL) learners in the Free State province, Fezile Dabi district in South Africa. The current study is an attempt to determine whether the breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge have a bearing on grade 11 EFAL learners' reading comprehension, and to examine which one of these variables, that is, breadth or depth of vocabulary knowledge, makes a more important contribution to reading comprehension. It also attempts to investigate the Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLS) used by grade 11 EFAL learners. For the non-experimental quantitative study, the participants of the study were thirty EFAL learners who were chosen based on available sampling. To collect the relevant data, two tests measuring breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge (Section A and Section B) and a reading comprehension were administered to all participants. To achieve its aim 1, two independent variables namely, the Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT) which measures vocabulary breadth and Word Associate Test (WAT) which measures vocabulary depth were used. Then, the dependent variable was the reading comprehension test in which the participants were asked to read the passages and answer some multiple choice questions. Pearson product-moment correlations and multiple regression were chosen as the dominant techniques for the statistical analyses. The results obtained from the analysis of the data indicated that while both depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge play an important role in EFAL learners' reading comprehension performance, depth of vocabulary knowledge makes a more important contribution. The results further revealed that depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge are positively correlated, that is, those learners who had large vocabulary size had a deeper knowledge of the words, too. Then, the findings from the qualitative study based on the data collected through eight focus group discussion participants about the VLS used by grade 11 EFAL learners, highlight that it is important to explore and broaden learners’ vocabulary learning strategic knowledge. Also, results reflect that learners can take control of their own vocabulary learning as long the teachers train and then offer them opportunities to learn and practice the strategies.The qualitative data for this study was analysed using the content analysis method.

Education officers based at science centres and museums play a significant role in teaching the visiting learners science. However, little is known about their teaching practices at these centres. The purpose of this study was to investigate the teaching practices of education officers when teaching science in a science centre environment. The focus of this study was on the education officers’ knowledge and instructional strategies used in teaching science at a science centre in Pretoria, Gauteng province. A qualitative case study approach was used. Data was collected from the three participating education officers using semi-structured interviews and observations. Data was analysed separately from each case using education officers’ knowledge framework guidance. The findings from this study indicate that although education officers have shown an adequate content knowledge in teaching science at the science centre their teaching method was teacher-centred and non-interactive and show-and-tell strategies were more common amongst the education officers. The study also revealed that education officers did not use their resources/exhibits effectively in teaching science. It is recommended in this study that intensive training of education officers is required before they can interact with the visiting learners.

Employee engagement is a phenomenon that has gained increasingly more attention in organisational communication studies and also in the postmodern organisational context. In the postmodern organisational environment, employee engagement focuses more on building relationships with employees than on individual performance. However, the value of internal communication practices to enhance employee engagement within a postmodern organisation has still not fully been explored. The study thus investigated, in accordance with what the literature suggests, a single case to test which internal communication practices are perceived as strengthening employee engagement within a postmodern organisation. Consequently, the study adopted a mixed method research approach utilising three research methods, namely a survey, a focus group and semi-structured interviews, to establish which internal communication practices the management of the organisation must adopt to strengthen employee engagement. The worldview adopted for this study was both the positivist and interpretivist research paradigms. Findings indicate that because the organisation’s employees’ views are heard, responded to and even form part of the solution, employees become more engaged. In addition, having too many internal communication tools and implementing them without a strategy in place can lead to employees becoming less engaged. Overall, the findings indicate that having a supportive management style, meeting employees’ needs and providing enough opportunities for employees to participate in problem-solving are deemed important for employee engagement. Interestingly, the findings show no correlation between the importance of establishing a good organisational culture and enhancing employee engagement in the organisation. Although the findings cannot be generalised to the larger population, the insight gained could serve as a heuristic for similar organisations to strengthen their employee engagement.
Werknemerbetrokkenheid is ’n verskynsel wat al hoe meer aandag kry in organisatoriese kommunikasiestudies en ook in die postmoderne organisatoriese konteks. In laasgenoemde konteks word daar meer met werknemerbetrokkenheid gefokus op die bou van verhoudings met werknemers as op individuele prestasie. Die waarde van interne kommunikasiepraktyke om werknemerbetrokkenheid binne ’n postmoderne organisasie te bevorder, is nog steeds nie ten volle ondersoek nie. Daar is dus in die studie, in ooreenstemming met wat die literatuur suggereer, ’n enkele gevallestudie ondersoek om te bepaal watter interne kommunikasiepraktyke beskou word as praktyke wat werknemerbetrokkenheid binne ’n postmoderne organisasie bevorder. Gevolglik is daar in die studie ’n gemengdemetode-navorsingsbenadering aangeneem wat drie navorsingsmetodes insluit, naamlik ’n opname, fokusgroep en semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude, met die doel om vas te stel watter interne kommunikasiepraktyke die bestuur van die organisasie moet aanneem om werknemerbetrokkenheid te bevorder. Die wêreldbeskouing wat vir hierdie studie aangeneem is, is sowel die positivistiese as vertolkende navorsingsparadigmas. Bevindinge dui daarop dat omrede die werknemers van die organisasie se sienings aangehoor word, daarop gereageer word en dit selfs deel van die oplossing uitmaak, werknemers meer betrokke raak. Daarbenewens kan te veel interne kommunikasie-middels en die implementering daarvan sonder ’n strategie daartoe lei dat werknemers minder betrokke raak. Oor die algemeen dui die bevindinge daarop dat ’n ondersteunende bestuurstyl, voldoening aan werknemers se behoeftes en die verskaffing van genoegsame geleenthede vir werknemers om aan probleemoplossing deel te neem, as belangrik geag word vir werknemerbetrokkenheid. Interessant genoeg wys die bevindinge geen korrelasie tussen die belangrikheid daarvan om ’n goeie organisatoriese kultuur te vestig en om werknemerbetrokkenheid in die organisasie te bevorder nie. Hoewel die bevindinge nie veralgemeen kan word om die groter bevolking in te sluit nie, kan die insig wat verkry word as ’n leerproses gebruik word vir soorgelyke organisasies om hulle werknemerbetrokkenheid te bevorder.

The purpose of this study was to develop a best practice corporate community involvement disclosures (CCID) framework for JSE-listed organisations in South Africa. An analysis of the literature underscored the need for quality CCID and revealed the paucity of research on this topic. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach employing three research stages. Firstly, an initial CCID framework was constructed on the basis of a content and document analysis of top-performing JSE-listed organisations. Secondly, 30 CCI experts refined and validated the CCID framework through semi-structured interviews. The developed CCID framework comprised 36 specific disclosure items in nine general disclosure categories. Thirdly, the CCID framework was applied to 116 corporate reports, including the integrated reports, sustainability reports and corporate webpages of 20 JSE-listed companies for the years 2015 to 2017. The findings indicated that the sample of JSE-listed organisations disclose some aspects of CCI in their corporate reports. However, there is no consistent reporting framework, and a number of CCID items were under-disclosed according to the CCI expert “best practice” to meet stakeholder expectations. In both the integrated and sustainability reports, general category 2, CCI strategy, and general category 4, CCI projects, were the best-performing categories. General category 8, Evidence of CCI, was one of the best-performing categories disclosed in the sustainability reports and on the corporate webpages. General category 5, Relevant regulatory measures, general category 6, CCI benefits/business value creation, and general category 7, Assurance of CCI reporting, contained no or limited CCID. The development of the CCID framework resonated with stakeholder theory, while the findings on the application of the CCID framework supported the theoretical perspectives of legitimacy theory. In addition to the identified legitimising drivers, the findings suggested that local tensions and expectations are impacting on CCID in South Africa. The findings of this study provide useful insights into CCID practices, guidelines and the quality of CCID. It is unique because it is the first of its kind to develop and apply a CCID framework in South Africa. The findings have a number of implications for stakeholders, corporate managers, regulators and policymakers in South Africa and internationally.

“We tend to think of the mind of an organisation residing in the … top management …but… [strategic] intelligence is not organised in a centralised structure but much more like a beehive of small simple components… ” Kevin Kelly, (1994: 166283). From the quote above, it is implied that the strategising practices of, among others, top managers, are the ‘small simple components’ that build towards the overall strategy of an organisation. The overall strategy of any organisation directly influences the performance thereof. As strategists, top managers use their thinking styles to influence the new strategic practices they endorse and those that are discarded, thereby impacting the competitive strategy employed by the organisation and ultimately organisational performance. This study investigated the rapport between the strategising practices used by top managers and their thinking styles. Based on a single illustrative case, this study utilised mixed data obtained from of 33 interviews and 79 questionnaires to describe the possible relationship between thinking styles and strategising practises. The results show that at the case organisation, thinking styles of top managers differ depending on the situation in which they find themselves. A possible relationship between thinking styles and strategising practises, at the case organisation, is further implied.

La empresa Textil Meka, S.A. de C.V. se dedica a la importación y teñido de hilo crudo proveniente de Korea del Sur, se encuentra en el régimen de importación definitiva. Access to firewood and other affordable energy sources is essential to the livelihoods of rural households in developing countries. Studies have been conducted to understand the reasons behind an extensive reliance on firewood in rural areas, especially in developing countries, despite improved electrification rates and a number of government policies introduced to encourage rural households to switch from traditional to modern fuels. This study aimed at assessing and thus understand the factors influencing the use of firewood by households in Ga - Malahlela village in Limpopo Province. Limited research has been conducted on firewood use, subsequent to improved electrification in rural areas in South Africa, hence it was to shed light on this little-explored subject on which the study was carried out. The assessment was based on household demographics and household energy use patterns, with a structured questionnaire being utilised to arrive at a detailed understanding of the factors that drive firewood use. It was established that firewood was still used to a significant degree, to satisfy household energy needs such as cooking, water heating and space heating. This was mainly due to the socioeconomic status of households. Socio-economic factors such as income, education level, household size and preference were found to be the factors exerting the greatest influence on the use of firewood among households in the study area. Psychological variables and the geographical location of the study area were also shown to promote the use of firewood. The study further revealed that, as indicated in the reviewed literature, households in the study area fuel stack and do not ascend the energy ladder. The reviewed literature further indicated that not all factors have equivalent significance in determining the behaviour and pattern of household energy use. This indicates that energy sources such as firewood are not completely discarded but are instead used in conjunction with modern energy sources such as electricity. In conclusion, this study established that despite the availability of electricity, as a result of poverty and the lack of free basic services such as free basic electricity, reliance on firewood in rural areas will continue.

Conhecer a localização subcelular de um dado produto génico (i.e., onde a proteína codificada pelo gene está localizada) é particularmente importante para a anotação funcional das proteínas. Para lidar com o aumento exponencial do número de proteínas descobertas recentemente, foram desenvolvidos métodos computacionais capazes de prever a localização subcelular de proteínas. Uma vez que as proteínas localizadas em determinados compartimentos intracelulares possuem características em comum, os algoritmos de aprendizagem automática podem ser úteis para essa previsão. O objectivo principal deste estudo foi prever a localização subcelular de prote ínas codificadas por 800 genes humanos envolvidos no tráfego da CFTR (regulador de condutância transmembranar de fibrose quística), uma proteína que, quando mutada, causa a doença genética Fibrose Quística.Neste projecto foram analisados os resultados de diferentes algoritmos de classificação disponíveis no MEKA, assim como diferentes métodos de construção de vectores representativos de proteínas. Por um lado, estes vectores foram construídos seguindo duas abordagens baseadas em Gene Ontology (GO): (1) valor 1-0 (presença ou ausência do termo GO) e (2) frequência dos termos GO. Por outro lado, foram consideradas três dimensões distintas dos vectores - 10165-D (todos os termos GO distintos para as proteínas em estudo), 429-D (termos GO essenciais obtidos pelo classificador mEN) e 87-D (termos GO essenciais obtidos pelo classificador mLASSO). Após a extracção dos termos GO e construção dos vectores representativos das proteínas, a localização subcelular das proteínas foi prevista através de três métodos de transformação do problema - Binary Relevance (BR), ClassifierChain (CC) e Label Cardinality (LC) - juntamente com três classificadores single-label - SMO, PART e J48. Estes classificadores foram avaliados através dos métodos 10-fold cross-validation e Leave-one-out cross-validation. Os sete melhores modelos de previsão criados pelo MEKA atingiram uma taxa global de sucesso entre 69,2 e 72,3% (overall actual accuracy) e 76,1 e 80,3% (overall locative accuracy).
To know the subcellular localization of a given gene product (i.e., where the protein codified by the gene is located) is particularly helpful to the functional annotation of proteins. In order to better deal with the exponential increase of newly discovered proteins, several computational methods, capable of predicting proteins' subcellular localization, were developed. Since proteins located in particular intracellular compartments share certain common features, Machine Learning (ML) algorithms are useful to predict it. The goal of this study was to predict the subcellular localization of proteins encoded by 800 human genes involved in CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) traffic, a protein that, when mutated, causes Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease. On this project we analyzed different classification algorithms available in MEKA, as well as different methods of construction of vectors representative of proteins. On one hand, the vectors were built following two approaches based on Gene Ontology (GO): (1) 1-0 Value (presence or absence of GO terms) and (2) term-frequency (number of occurences of individual go terms). On the other hand, three different dimensions of the vectors were considered: 10165-D (all distinct GO terms), 429-D (essencial GO terms selected by mEN classifier) and 87-D (essencial GO terms selected by mLASSO classifier). After extracting the GO terms and building the vectors, the subcellular localization of proteins was predicted using three methods of problem transformation - Binary Relevance (BR), Classifier Chain (CC) and Label Cardinality (LC) _ along with three single-label classifiers - SMO, PART and J48. These classifiers were evaluated by the methods of the 10-fold cross-validation and Leave-one-out cross-validation. The seven best predictive models created by MEKA achieved an overall success rate between 69.2 and 72.3% (overall actual accuracy) and between 76.1 and 80.3% (overall locative accuracy).

The study aimed to explore teachers’ mathematical knowledge in respect of teaching the concept of fractions to Grade 6 learners. To that end a qualitative study was done, using a case study design. Data were collected through the observation of, and interviews with, three teachers at three schools in the Capricorn South district. Rooted in the theory of constructivism, the study was supplemented by the conceptual framework of mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) (Ball et al., 2008) and Shulman’s (1986) notion of pedagogical knowledge for teaching (PCK). The key finding of this investigation revealed that, of the three teachers, two did not develop the concept of fractions for their learners, but merely followed the traditional method of teaching the concept by encouraging their learners to memorise rules without understanding. Only one teacher emphasised an understanding of mathematical concepts. The main observation which the researcher made, was that teachers require a great deal of knowledge and expertise, in carrying out the work of teaching subject matter related to fractions.

As rapid technological development constantly drives and reshapes the economy, it is vital for learners and teachers to be highly proficient in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The data collected revealed that the barriers to ICT integration can be viewed as deprivation to both teachers and learners, especially those with diverse disabilities and learning difficulties. ICT implementation is therefore more than just change driven by technology. It is an opportunity to assist everyone, including people from all income groups, policy-makers and leaders to support converging technologies to create a more inclusive and humane future. The research was designed as a case study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted, lesson observations were undertaken and qualitative questionnaires were administered as methods of data collection. The research population included principals and ICT teachers in the Manzini Region. The sample was made up of two principals and 13 teachers. The data was transcribed and presented as raw data and thereafter analysed thematically. The data collected was analysed qualitatively. The findings of the study were that the factors influencing ICT implementation in inclusive primary schools in Eswatini included a lack of skills and knowledge from teachers; the lack of teaching and learning time allocated to ICT; insufficient teaching and learning materials; a lack of motivation and an insufficient number of teachers. Other factors included the lack of support and collaboration from principals and the Government of Eswatini. In view of the above factors, some recommendations were made, namely, that the Ministry of Education should reintroduce ICT in all inclusive primary schools. The schools that offer ICT should consider increasing the time allocated for ICT and enhance Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for ICT teachers. They should also provide for learners with diverse disabilities and learning difficulties a variety of teaching materials such as assistive devices to enhance teaching and learning.

The purpose of this study was to explore the classroom practices of Senior Phase Natural Sciences teachers in some of the schools of the Vhembe District. Qualitative case study approach was employed and three teachers participated. The following research questions were explored: What is the level of the teacher’s subject-matter knowledge in the teaching of Natural Sciences (NS)? What is the nature of the teacher’s instructional strategies in the teaching of NS? How does the teacher’s subject-matter knowledge and instructional strategies shape the teachers’ classroom interaction and discourse in the teaching of NS? Interviews, observations and a questionnaire have been used for data collection. Teachers used their teaching experiences to teach NS. Results indicated lack of teachers, facilities and resources. It is recommended that the Department of Education as an arm of government should see that schools have the facilities, resources and teachers they need for proper teaching and learning as well as providing sufficient workshops to improve teachers’ classroom practices.

The research entailed an exploration of the design of job descriptions (JDs) in the South African Police Service (SAPS). A JD represents an official document that defines general duties, tasks, and related job responsibilities. It details the job features and the essential abilities required to perform the job. JDs are fundamental and vital to outline the job duties harmonised with the relevant organisation’s policy, ethos, goals, mission, and vision. Participants in this study were purposefully chosen to conduct semi-structured interviews and focus groups with information-rich SAPS Human Resource (HR) practitioners from both the support and operational career streams, to gain their insights into and viewpoints on the JD processes in the SAPS. The National Head Office: Divisions: Human Resource Utilisation (HRU) and Operational Response Service (ORS) and the information-rich provincial HR practitioners who support and monitor the implementation of JDs in the SAPS were included in this study. The participants were asked to answer open-ended questions that aimed to explore the design of JDs in the SAPS. The interviews were recorded with the participants’ permission. The recorded information was translated verbatim and analysed. The six fundamental themes that emerged are: value and benefits of JDs; processes to coordinate and monitor JDs to ensure effective management; the potential of JDs to enhance police performance; knowledge and skills for designing JDs; attitudes, experiences, and challenges of JDs; and recommendations of electronic JD systems. The topics were delineated using direct quotations from the participants as gained during the interviews. Opinions, experiences, administrative aspects, and criticism of the various features of JDs in the SAPS was explored. In summary, the research recommendations and conclusion were given. The results of this study show there are several factors that can enable and optimise inclusion in the effective designing process of JDs in the SAPS.

The dissertation Magical Realism in Persian and Saudi Narrative Writing views as essential the assumption that the phenomenon of magical realism is not restricted solely to the cultures with colonial legacy, but is transferable to literary works created under systematic and systemic violence anywhere in the world. Previous research of the dissertation's author proved the existence of parallels in the dynamics of sociopolitical development of Iran and Saudi Arabia in the 20th century, foremost in the power relation of the states to their citizens and in the status of women in the society, while there was a strong tendency towards institutionalization of the traditional patriarchal, androcentric and misogynic societal paradigms since the second half of the 20th century. In the last thirty years, women have countered this situation through increased literary activity that has turned out to be an important means of self-fulfillment and emancipation. The aim of the study was to explore how and why senior phase teachers are capable or incapable of integrating environmental education in teaching and learning. The focus of this study was on teacher’s knowledge about environmental education, instructional strategies used and challenges and opportunities experienced when they have to integrate environmental education. The study adopted a qualitative research method, case study design and an interpretative research paradigm. Qualitative data was collected using interviews and lesson observations. Three teachers participated in this study. Pseudonyms were used to protect their identities. A typology approach was utilised to analyse data based on the research questions, themes, conceptual framework, literature review and the personal experience of the researcher. All data collected was analysed and interpreted as a single case using. The study revealed that environmental education is not integrated effectively, teachers who integrate and those that do not integrate encountered challenges and that teachers have inadequate knowledge about the integration of environmental education. Therefore, it is recommended that the school together with teachers introduce continuous environmental education programmes and suggests approaches that can be used to improve their instructional strategies to enable the intergration of environmental education effectively.
